I want to talk about the benefits of Peluva, five toe minimalist shoes, and a barefoot inspired lifestyle overall. A commercial recording, perhaps, but we are committed to promoting foot functionality and overcoming this disastrous slide into foot atrophy and dysfunction—that is the essence of a modern lifestyle and a life lived in elevated, restrictive shoes. If we’re going to talk about ancestral health and getting back to basics, eating the right food, getting your sunshine and getting your exercise, we also have to look after our feet. When we encase them in restrictive shoes, we develop lifelong bad habits, dysfunction, weakness, and atrophy—no wonder we have these ridiculous statistics, such as the 78% of Americans who complain of chronic foot pain. “Solutions” to their chronic foot pain range from orthotics to prescription medication to surgery. And did you know that Medicare covers only two pairs of shoes per year for elderly Americans that are in the Medicare system? Isn’t that kind of ridiculous? Of all the things that your standardized, nationalized healthcare policy should cover, they threw in a couple pairs of orthopedic shoes because everyone, of course, is going to experience foot problems and foot pain. But there is a way to escape from this disastrous decline, and that is to rebuild your foot functionality very carefully by transitioning over to a more barefoot inspired lifestyle. In this episode, I share how to get started, why you want to go barefoot as much as possible (and how do it safely!), why your big toe must be allowed to operate independently from the other toes and in multiple planes of motion, why a truly barefoot style shoe must have a zero drop sole, what experts have deemed as the single most destructive feature in the modern shoe, and much more! TIMESTAMPS: What happens to your feet in the modern day restrictive padded athletic shoe? [00:56] You need to rebuild your foot functionality very carefully. [02:21] You must have the articulated five toes. [03:16] It is very important how and where your heel hits the ground in the middle of your stride. [04:34] The Peluva shoe that was designed for basically everyday use has 9 millimeters of protective cushioning. [12:39] Just moving in everyday life is the number one fitness objective. [14:43] Ground feel of the shoe means that with every foot strike, the neurons in your feet send a message to your central system. [20:06] If you took off your shoes now and started running on a hard surface, you would probably exhibit the most graceful midfoot landing. [25:52] The best part of wearing the Peluva shoes is that your feet achieve their full range of motion and functionality. [27:57] The big toe initiating the takeoff portion of the stride is the key trigger for glute activation in the body. [32:32] The big toe needs to operate independently through multiple planes of motion. Episode Summary: Delaney Smith is the Founder of Minnemals barefoot shoes and she is a Muscle Activation Techniques and Gait Analysis practitioner. After practicing for 5 years and continually seeing weak feet and other problems across the body, she traced a lot of the weakness and dysfunction back to the shoes people wear every day. The lack of information around this topic and what people have traditionally been told to look for in a "good" shoe brought her into creating her own barefoot shoe line, Minnemals. Episode Highlights: How traditional shoes weaken feet—strong feet are key to preventing pain and improving body mechanics. How to transition to barefoot shoes gradually with foot exercises and mindful walking. Barefoot shoes: wide toe box, zero drop, flexible soles = natural movement. How having an awareness of your gait will improve your posture, mobility, and overall wellness. Exercises to strengthen your toes and feet without wearing barefoot shoes. Did you know that the health of your feet impacts your entire body? Or that the shoes you wear daily could be contributing to more widespread pain—from your ankles to your back and beyond? Today's guest on my Feel Better Live More podcast is Jim Dooner, the Head Physiotherapist for The Foot Collective, a global community of health and movement practitioners on a mission to make a much-needed shift in the culture around feet and footwear. Through their online training resources, in-person workshops, and a range of physical training tools, they aim to empower people on the journey of restoring natural foot function and balance and to make this process as fun and engaging as possible. In this incredible conversation, Jim explains the fascinating 'mismatch' between how our feet evolved and how we treat them in our modern environment. He introduces the concept of 'movement nutrition' - the idea that our feet, like our bodies, require proper nourishment through movement and sensory input, and explains why many of us are severely 'malnourished' in this regard. We explore the 'Five Fs' of footwear - a framework for understanding how our shoes should support rather than hinder natural foot function. Jim shares powerful insights about why conditions like plantar fasciitis, bunions, and chronic pain often stem from poor foot function and how these issues can be addressed through natural movement and proper footwear choices. Jim and I also discuss balance training and play-based movement. He explains how these simple yet profound practices can benefit everyone, from children to older adults, and why they're crucial for healthy ageing. We also delve into the cultural aspects of foot health, examining how fashion and societal norms have shaped our relationship with our feet, often at the expense of our wellbeing. Throughout our conversation, Jim offers practical advice for anyone looking to improve their foot health, whether dealing with chronic pain or simply wanting to move better. According to Jim, it's never too late to improve foot function, and small changes can significantly improve overall health. So, if you've ever questioned why we accept foot pain as normal or wondered whether your shoes might be affecting more than just your feet, this conversation offers a profound shift in perspective. Jim's message is clear - the path to better health could start right beneath your feet. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. In this episode, we're diving into a part of the body we often take for granted—our feet! As we age, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, foot issues like stiff joints, bunions, and plantar fasciitis often become more common. But what if we told you there's a way to give your feet the care they deserve? We're joined by James Dooner, a physiotherapist and founder of The Foot Collective, to talk about why foot health is so important and how we can strengthen and rebuild our feet with simple, effective practices. From going barefoot to using products like toe spacers, cork balls, and hacky sacks, James shares how these tools can help you restore natural foot function and mobility. Throughout the episode, we'll challenge modern shoe culture and explore why many of our footwear choices—despite being "good"—might actually be doing more harm than good. James advocates for minimalist, functional shoes that allow our feet to move naturally, and he explains how barefoot movement can unlock better foot health. If you've ever wondered how to treat your feet better, this is the episode for you! After listening, you'll never look at your feet—or your shoes—the same way again. All the foot care products James mentions are available at You Must Try It, and you can find links to everything discussed in the show. Key Takeaways: Feet are the foundation for movement but are often neglected. Many modern shoes, even supportive ones, restrict natural foot movement. Barefoot movement and minimalist shoes can help restore foot health. Foot health improves through simple practices like using toe spacers and introducing more texture to our daily lives.

Functional podiatry focuses on treating feet in an integrated way, considering complex human movement and the sensory side of the foot. Footwear trends, such as the current maximalist shoe trend, can impact foot function and movement accuracy. Understanding foot posture and its effect on body alignment is essential for addressing movement patterns and preventing injuries. Setting a stable base by activating the foot tripod, externally rotating the hips, and connecting with the toes can improve foot function and overall body alignment. Toe spacers are an effective tool for resetting the feet and improving conditions such as bunions, hammer toes, and plantar fasciitis. Sensory perception plays a crucial role in foot movement and overall posture. Reconnecting with the sensory side of ourselves can unlock proper movement and support longevity. Dr. Emily's upcoming book, 'Sensory Sapiens,' explores how modern movement is aging us and the importance of prioritizing movement longevity. Releasing the feet daily can reduce foot stress and pain. When it comes to gait, foot health, and the intricate relationship between footwear and movement, there is often a lack of understanding. This makes today's discussion particularly significant. Anthony chats with Dr. Courtney Conley, an internationally recognised foot and gait specialist. While the importance of proper bike fitting, stretching, and core exercises is widely acknowledged, foot health frequently receives far less attention. Footwear choices and cleat setup could be contributing to pain in the back, neck, and knees, or even hindering the ability to generate power effectively. Additionally, she provides a comprehensive overview of footwear, discussing suitable options for both adults and children to promote foot health and mitigate potential problems. In addition to this interview, Courtney also recorded a series of videos to better explain a number of the concepts discussed such as diagnostic tests that are used to determine mobility and strength and the exercises one should perform to improve the outcomes based on the diagnostics. The interview will be available to everyone while the videos from the gym will only be available to paid subscribers (found at the end of the show notes page).
