Exercise Science 101: How to get stronger for pole dance

The Evidence Based Pole Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2026 16:57

The episode explains how pole dancers can get stronger using progressive overload, defined as gradually increasing training stress so the body adapts during rest and the same demands become easier over time. It outlines adaptation timelines: neurological and cardiovascular changes can occur quickly (sometimes within a session for neuro drills), noticeable strength gains typically appear after about 3–6 weeks, connective tissue (tendons/ligaments) adapts around the 3-month mark, and bone density changes occur closer to 6 months. Rosy emphasizes easing back into training—especially after a break or postpartum—avoiding self-punishment, and prioritizing rest because adaptation happens during recovery. It describes ways to increase load for pole and bodyweight training: increase training frequency while keeping at least 1–2 rest days per week, increase repetitions, use time-based conditioning like a “pole treadmill” (repeated climbs/descents for time), increase resistance via weights/bands or by selecting harder bodyweight progressions, and use isometrics by holding longer or increasing tension. It notes that muscle damage is not necessarily required for positive adaptation and references Felipe Damas' work (primarily in hypertrophy research), while clarifying the focus is strength training rather than bodybuilding. The episode also explains that the body responds to chronic life stress similarly to training stress, which can hinder strength gains, and encourages stress reduction and enjoyable movement.Citations:SELYE H. In this episode of The Fitness League, Josh Scutnik and Joelle Cavagnaro dive into practical training questions that come up all the time—but rarely get clear answers. We break down kettlebell training fundamentals, how to improve your pull-ups the right way, and why progressive overload still matters no matter where you're starting from. We also talk through how to adapt workouts to individual needs without losing effectiveness, including common mistakes people make when substituting exercises or relying too heavily on banded reps. Along the way, we share some behind-the-scenes insight into how The Fitness League app is evolving, how community feedback shapes programming decisions, and why tracking habits—not just workouts—can be a game changer for consistency. This episode is all about training with intention: understanding why you're doing what you're doing, focusing on proper form, and building strength in a way that actually carries over to real life. Whether you're working toward your first pull-up, learning kettlebells, or just trying to train smarter—not harder—this one's for you. Were you told to "wait and see" after a DEXA bone screening or have you ever felt confused about what your T-score actually means, then this episode is for you? Today I am joined by two of the most respected bone health experts in the world, Dr. John Neustadt and Dr. Doug Lucas, to clear up the most misunderstood parts of bone loss in midlife. We cover How and why women in menopause should get bone density testing and how to actually understand what this means. Does estrogen really protect bones? Why are people having fractures despite good bone density scores without osteoporosis and vice versa. What are alternative screenings and how they compare to DEXA The downsides of bone screening and how to approach your bone health no matter if you have osteoporosis or not What the research supports for improving bone density and what supplements we may need to consider. We talk about the more important form of vitamin K and strontium What we need to know about that scary 30% of people die within a year of a hip fracture stat And so much more Dr. Doug Lucas I already mentioned that Dr. Doug Lucas is a leading expert in osteoporosis and longevity medicine. He really is. He is a double board-certified physician and founder of The OsteoCollective. Dr. Doug is in the functional medicine space. And he has a special message for you: osteoporosis is not a life sentence, and conventional medicine isn't your only option. Remember that. Osteoporosis is not a life sentence, and conventional medicine isn't your only option. We've spoken in past episodes about how he left his career as an orthopedic surgeon after became so frustrated with a system that just waited until bones were broken before taking action. Now, he's on a mission to teach people how to take control of their health before disease sets in. He is such an incredible speaker and really delivers clear message that is relatable, and gives science-backed insights that we all can understand and act on.    Dr. John Neustadt John Neustadt, ND, He is the Founder and President of the dietary supplement company Nutritional Biochemistry, Inc. (NBI, nbihealth.com) and NBI Pharmaceuticals. He received numerous US FDA Orphan Drug Designations for potentially treating rare diseases using natural products through his company. In this episode, I share the one mindset shift that helped me finally get stronger in my 40s. For years, I held myself back with the thought, “I don't want to hurt myself.” I break down how this belief keeps so many women stuck, why avoiding challenge actually increases our risk of injury as we age, and what changed for me when I finally let go of that fear.I also share the conversations with my son, my husband, and even insights from big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton that completely transformed how I think about strength, aging, and discomfort. This episode will inspire you to push yourself, lift heavier, and trust your ability to adapt and grow. What I CoverThe surprising research on muscle loss in women as we ageThe real thought that stops most women from getting strongerHow lifting heavier (and allowing discomfort) changed my strength quicklyWhy occasional injury is part of growth—not a sign to stopHow I balance pushing myself with listening to my bodyKey TakeawayIf you want to get stronger, you must shift the thoughts that are keeping you comfortable. They explore the concept of fitness and wellness beyond appearances, focusing on personalized goals and lifelong strategies. Discover why many fail to sustain fitness routines and learn practical tips and motivation to integrate physical activity into daily life. David emphasizes making fitness personal, possible, and persistent, and highlights the impact of consistent, mindful movement. Perfect for anyone seeking to enhance their health and wellness at any age.Listeners are introduced to the concept of the "paradox of fitness," as David highlights the pervasive, yet often misleading fitness ideals portrayed in media. Despite a global market flooded with fitness resources and staggering financial investments in health, true fitness remains elusive due to cultural myths and unrealistic goals. Amerland emphasizes the personal nature of fitness and the necessity of making incremental, mindful changes that reflect individual lifestyles. This episode serves as a clarion call for adopting a realistic, personalized approach to fitness that prioritizes health over appearance.Key Takeaways:True fitness is personal and should be gauged by how you feel in your body, rather than by comparison to unrealistic media-fueled ideals.Consistency and mindfulness in physical activities can significantly impact your fitness journey and overall well-being.Small, intentional changes, like choosing to take the stairs or walk more, can lead to substantial health improvements over time.Overcoming negative self-talk and setting realistic expectations are crucial in developing sustainable fitness habits.Fitness is not about extreme regimens but integrating physical activity into daily routines to enjoy better health and longevity.Resources:David Amerland's Website: davidamerland.comDavid Amerland's Book: "Built to Last: How to Get Stronger, Healthier, and Happier at Every Stage of Life" To advertise on our podcast, visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/TransformyourMindor email kriti@youngandprofiting.com See this video on The Transform Your Mind YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@MyhelpsUs/videosTo see a transcripts of this audio as well as links to all the advertisers on the show page https://myhelps.us/Follow Transform Your Mind on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/myrnamyoung/Follow Transform Your mind on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063738390977Please leave a rating and review on iTunes https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/transform-your-mind/id1144973094 https://podcast.feedspot.com/personal_development_podcasts/

They all have arrived at a point in there minds, independent from the other team mates, that they are going to give everything inside of them to fulfill their roles. Have you noticed that they will go to work day in and day out to come the closes that they possibly can to the perfection of every move they make in order to be where they need to be in order for their to be a extreme minimum margin of error.  When they operate at their highest peaks they have paid the price mentally, physically and spiritually which means that they had to challenge themselves to do what was hard each and everytime they stepped out on the court, field, class, water etc.  The weak got left behind, the excuse makers got left behind, the crybabies for lack of a better term got left behind in almost every instance where there was an opportunity to be great.  It not that things become easier in life for anyone who realizes their potential to win at whatever they do they just accept the fact that in order to become the champion of solving their problems as well as others they have to put their game face on and get moving toward the end of the highest and greatest outcome that they can possibly experience. The mechanism of eccentric contraction within the muscle is a little complicated but Katy offers a simple analogy involving two hair combs! Katy and Jeannette offer some examples of how you can incorporate eccentrics into your movement plan with the empowering message that you can get a lot stronger doing only half an exercise. Can't do a pull-up? Not a problem, train the eccentric half of the movement—lowering down from the pull-up bar—and you will reap the strength rewards. Also in this episode, Katy speaks with Pack Matthews of Ikaria Design and creator of the Soul Seat®, the original and adjustable cross-legged chair. Katy is using one for her podcast set up and she and Pack talk about the origin of the chair, how the design has changed over time and Katy's experience with it.  CHAPTERS(0:07:08) - Muscle Contraction: Three types (0:15:56) - Sarcomere: Actin, Myosin, and Titin (0:26:57) - Get Stronger Doing Half of an Exercise (0:41:00) - Listener Question: 'use it or lose it' brought to you by Earth Runners  (0:47:40) - Interview with Pack Matthews of Ikaria Design BOOKS, ARTICLES AND RESEARCH MENTIONEDWant to Get Stronger and Avoid Injury, Try This, New York Times article on eccentrics Eccentrics: Get Stronger Doing Half Of An Exercise, Katy Bowman The Chair by Galen CranzMADE POSSIBLE BY OUR SPONSORS:Ikaria Design, creators of the Soul Seat®, a height adjustable chair that allows you to sit in diverse shapes including cross-legged, take 10% of new inventory with code DNA10Venn Design, beautiful floor cushions and ball seats that keep you moving at home or at the officeSmart Playrooms, design and products to keep you and your kids engaged and active at home, take 10% off monkey bars, rock wall panels and holds with code DNA10Earth Runners, minimalist sandals that mimic being truly barefoot through their grounding technology, take 10% off with code DNA10Peluva, Five-toe minimalist sports shoes ideal for walking and higher impact activities, take 15% off with code NUTRITIOUSMOVEMENTSweet Skins, organic hemp and cotton clothing that is stylish, flexible and designed to move with you, take 15% off with code DNA15

Because here's the truth: sometimes the key to building the body you want isn't found in more workouts or more discipline... it's in building a life that supports your goals. From the inside out. Because the truth is, sometimes when you hit a plateau, the answer isn't to push harder. It's not to add more workouts, tighten your macros, or stress about your steps. Sometimes, the thing that unlocks progress is actually the least expected strategy: Cultivating more peace in your life.   What I discuss:  Protecting my energy Savoring the little moments Being intentional with what I consume   If you loved this episode, I know you'll also love episode 436: 6 Simple Ways to Reduce Stress Daily   If you want more from me, be sure to check out... Often misunderstood as simply being about muscles and bodybuilding, protein is, in fact, the fundamental building block of life – forming everything from our DNA and skin to our enzymes and hormones. And today's returning guest believes that many of us are simply not eating enough. Dr Rupy Aujla is a London-based doctor, nutritionist and founder of The Doctor's Kitchen, who is on a mission to make healthy cooking accessible and enjoyable for all. He has authored multiple best-selling cookbooks, including his very latest: Healthy High Protein: Supercharge Your Energy, Feel Stronger and Live Longer.   In this conversation, Rupy challenges the traditional protein recommendations and why he believes that many of us should be focussing on increasing our consumption. He shares how muscle wasting affects around 40% of us as we get older and he explains that this muscle wastage is not just about losing strength – but also affects our metabolism, energy levels and overall wellbeing.    We also delve into the protein content of our breakfasts, the differences between animal and plant proteins, the potential downsides of protein powders, how protein needs change as we get older, and why increasing our protein intake can often reduce our snacking and ultra-processed food consumption.   Whether you're dealing with mid-morning energy crashes, looking to support healthy ageing, or simply wanting to feel better, Rupy's practical wisdom transforms protein-focused eating into something manageable and enjoyable for all.
