They say nothing goes according to plan. That was true of the dozens of assassination plots against Adolf Hitler while he led Nazi Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. And it’s also often true of the plots enacted by players in Black Orchestra, the cooperative game inspired by those events. We talk with history writer Nikola Budanovich, who walks us through three real-life plots against Hitler. And game designer Philip duBarry tells us how he questioned whether the game would ever get made.Read a full transcript of this episode.Immersed is produced by Cardboard Edison.Special thanks to Philip duBarry, Nikola Budanovic, Jaime Dooling-Perrelli, and Erik Herrington.Editing assistance by Eric Booth.Music:self-fulfilling prophecy - michael bayer by Lloyd Rodgers is licensed under a Public Domain Mark 1.0 License.sultan cintré by Cuicuitte is licensed under a Attribution License.Talk to me by Loyalty Freak Music is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Sa rumeur remontait l’escalier by cuicuitte (feat renoncule) / comme ça is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Sky 7 : Debauched Dance With The Self by Monplaisir is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Geheimnisse des Dritten Reichs by Evil Bear Boris is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License.Traffic by Kai Engel is licensed under a Attribution License.Bouncy Gypsy Beats by John Bartmann is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Clover by Little Glass Men is licensed under a Attribution License.Sponsors:Fireside Games, FiresideGames.comSmirk and Dagger Games, SmirkAndDagger.comHABA USA Games, HABAusa.comVan Ryder Games, VanRyderGames.comFormal Ferret Games, FormalFerretGames.comIndie Boards and Cards, IndieBoardsAndCards.comBrotherwise Games, BrotherwiseGames.comBreaking Games, BreakingGames.comFor sponsorship opportunities, or to send a game to be considered for a future episode, email suzanne@cardboardedison.com.Cardboard Edison is supported by our patrons on Patreon.ADVISERS: Justin Gibbs, Peter C. Spirits of the Rice Paddy is the latest design and offering by Philip DuBarry, who recently was successful with Skyway Robbery and has a number of games under his belt already. However Spirits of the Rice Paddy certainly looks and sounds different. This a farming themed game, but unlike other farming games, this one has an oriental game and a much more focused and thematic farm: Rice. But this game also comes with some special moves, like being able to use different spirits to boost your abilities and giving you special actions to help you grow your rice. And that is not all, a very interesting drafting system, a water delivery system and managing resources carefully if you want any of that water… But don’t take it from me. Here’s an interview with designer so you can hear it from someone with authority. Hope you enjoy the show!

Skyway Robbery is the product of designer Philip duBarry, the same Philip duBarrry who designed Canalis, Courtier, Kingdom of Solomon… Yeah… he’s pretty good. This time he’s turned to Kickstarter to try and get the funds and produce Skyway Robbery, a steampunk stravaganza in which the players have to put together the biggest heist they can. Assembling a cast of professional criminals, your task, as the airship you’re in travels from place to place, is to conduct robberies, dodge the authorities and, of course, make sure the other criminals don’t take your loot away. The artwork for this game looks totally terrific and the theme sounds very good fun, there’s no doubt of that. But I wanted to find out more about it and the design and designer behind this game, so I got together with Phil and asked him a ton of questions. Hope you enjoy the show!
