I was listening to the Book Feed the Muscle Burn the Fat and he relayed the story of a man at a Tony Robbins event (Tony is a major Business Guru). He told Tony that he had done EVERYTHING to grow his audience. Since he had tried everything Tony asked him, "Tell me the last 100 things you've tried." To this, the man answered, "Well I haven't tried 100 things." Tony then stated, "Then tell me the last 50 things." The man replied, "I haven't tried 50 things" Tony replied, "Then tell me the last 10 things you've tried." It turned out the man had tried about four things. We think we've tried everything, but there are more ways to connect with your audience, many of them that require just a little bit of time to setup up some technology. Today we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask, "Have I really done everything I can to promote my show, connect with my audience, and increase my reach? I think if we look deep into our hearts we know there is more. Here Is The Low Hanging Fruit Social media: You should be promoting your show on the social media channels. There are plugins such as social warfare. There are automation tools like Social Jukebox. Media hosts like Spreaker and Blubrry will publish your audio file as a video on YouTube. Spreaker will tweet out about your episode. Blubrry will create a sample of your show to tweet out and paste on Facebook. Libsyn will post to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, iHeart Radio, LinkedIn, Blogger, Tumblr. Podcast Directories: There are four main directories you should be listed in. Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, TuneIn, and Google Play Music. Do You Have Subscribe Buttons On Your Site? One way to keep your numbers going up is to get people to subscribe. This includes buttons for ANDROID. Subscribeonandroid.com is a free site from blubrry where you can point people to that site (using your RSS feed) and if they don't have any apps to subscribe they will be prompted to download one. My friend Daniel J Lewis has a great plugin call Social Subscribe and Follow that creates amazing looking subscribe buttons Do You Have Share Buttons on Your Website? There are plugins (again I love social Warfare) that make it easy for your audience to tweet out your show. There are players like the coolcast player, the Smart Podcast Player, the Simple Podcast Press player. Don't get hung up too much on players as 80% of people are listening on on portable devices. With that said, can people share your episodes from their phone? Local Meetups I've had three people sign up for the School of Podcasting and I got to be on TV all from meeting local podcasters in Ohio. If you don't have a local meetup, do what I did. I created one. In the words of my friend Glenn "the Geek" Hebert, it's not who you know, it's who knows you. Check it out at www.meetup.com I run a local podcasters group for Northeast Ohio www.neohiopodcasters.com Reach Out to Other Similar Podcasts Some of my best friends are my "Competition." Daniel J. Lewis from the Audacity to Podcast, Ray Ortega who does the Podcasters Studio, Mike Dell works for Blubrry and does the Podcast Help Desk, there are others as well. Reach out to them and see if they'd like to co-host an episode or a segment, or be interviewed, or... or ... or.. Remember there really isn't any competition in podcasting. They can listen to you on Monday and your competition on another day of the week. It's not like radio where you are both on at the exact same time. Reach out to Businesses? If I did a show about weddings, I would reach out to every dress shop in the area and see if I could put some CDs at the check out for exchange for a link to their site, or a mention in the show. Go Record People at Events You can get a portable recorder for as little as $99 for the Zoom H1 or just use your phone. Then give these people your business card, and tell them they will be on a future episode. You do have business cards right? There are TONS of ideas Speaking of Daniel and Ray, we do a show together called the Podcasters Roundtable and we did an episode pointing out ways to promote your show (how to grow your audience from 100s to 1000s). The point here is you can't think about these ideas, you have to do them. In a recent (not safe for work) video Gary Vaynerchuck explained that he would Google his topic and connect every blog/podcast about his topic. He said 1 in every 347 will write your back, and that is better than zero. You Need to Quit Reading, Quit Watching, Quit Listening, and Start Doing If you're thinking of getting into podcasting, you can read articles, get confused cause some say to launch with 15 episodes, and some say (like me) it doesn't matter. Some say New and Noteworthy is the goal, and others (like me) say it's not that great. You can't improve what you don't start. How NOT to Make Money In Podcasting She's back! Jessica Kupferman runs the JKM Agency has a fun story today. In the same way that you learn new skills when you start podcasting, you will learn new skills when you take on a sponsor. You will need to learn how to read an advertisement. It's not as easy at it sounds. If you just read the bullet points, you can be boring. If you stray too far from the bullet points, you may forget to hit all the talking points. Today she talks about someone who had to redo an advertisement three times. The lesson is, read all the paperwork that comes with the sponsor. Know what you HAVE To say, know what you are ALLOWED to say, and then try to say it in an entertaining fashion. If you mess up, you don't get paid for that sponsor. For more information about getting a sponsor for your show check out Jessica at http://www.jkmagency.com Because of My Podcast Story Jessica Rhodes of Internet Connections had a live panel on her latest episodes. The people on the panel had been interviewed on other shows, as well as some have their own podcast. He launched his first podcast in 2007 which was called Produce Picker Podcast. In 2009, he created The Podcasters’ Studio to share what he had learned while producing his first podcast and to teach himself audio-only podcast production.  Podcasting quickly became a full-time hobby and eventually his job – more accurately, his dream job. In this episode of All Hazards we’re going to talk about podcasting in general, podcasting in the government sector and how it might fit in with your office’s public outreach messaging.  We’ll offer some tips to get you started if you think your audience might want to listen to what you have to say, how you might improve your existing podcast, and what some of the trends are in podcasting.                           -Kent Student Radio-hosting multiple types of shows, mostly music but filling in on some talk types of shows -WJCU-doing a ‘Unsigned band’ show.  Did artist interviews and collect unsigned material-…didn’t have the engineering background so it was difficult to adjust to the technology side-was kinda thrown into it because I was traveling and scouting bands on the weekends.   tried to start podcasting 2009/2010 but it never really grabbed ahold.   my band started a podcast around 2011 and did a few episodes, I appear on one but never really followed through on “doing my own” AMERICANROCKSTAR Podcast w/Scott Sykora -by this time I was becoming engrossed in podcasts.  I spent a lot of time traveling and driving and needed to cleans my palate from music—-I wanted to expand my mind, learn about things, explore things I had always been interested in but never searched out. Some podcasts that I subscribed to at this time were: Podcast Ufo-w/ Martin Willis The Kate Valentine UFO Show-w/ Kate Valentine Random Alien Brain Droppings-w/ Suzanne Chancellor The Unexplained with Howard Huges The Other Side of Truth-w/ Paul Kimball Radio Misterioso-w/ Greg Bishop Binnall of America-w/Tim Binnall Open Minds UFO Radio-w/ Alejandro Rojas The Paracast-w/ Gene Steinberg and Christopher O’Brien Hidden Experience-w/ Mike Clelland The Gralien Report-w/ Micah Hanks            As I listened to all this content I felt like I was becoming an expert myself of the topics of UFO’s and alien abduction. All of these podcasts I found because of any of the ones I listened to before, They are all interconnected and have a lot of the same guests.  After listening to the same content over and over, I needed new blood.   I then discovered new content providers, and kinda traveled off the paranormal track and widened my horizons and explored a few other podcasts such as: SasWhat: A Podcast about Bigfoot- w/ Seth Breedlove Into The Fray w/ Shannon, Ryan, and Sam Where Did the Road Go w/Seriah Azkath The Rogue Planet Podcast w/ Jason, Maureen, Ryan, and Caleb                  I needed to find some other stuff to listen to, the paranormal world was starting to depress me…I could never find any answers!!!  I started looking into music, another passion.  I listened to a whole bunch of different podcasts about the music industry but only 2 stuck… The Jasta Show w/ Jamie Jasta Music Business Facts w/ Rodney Holder           By this point I knew I needed to podcast, but what about???  I figured I would try my hand at a paranormal podcast, why not-it isn’t over saturated yet???  I made a plan about my content and how I wanted to present the info so now I needed to learn how to podcast.  I thought about trying to consume as much information about podcasting as I could, learn everything I could as fast as possible.  I found a bunch of podcasts and subscribed and downloaded as many episodes as possible.  These are some of the podcast I subscribed to to help me learn about podcasting… The Podcasters Studio and Podcast Quick Tips w/ Ray Ortega The Podcasters Roundtable w/ Ray, Daniel J Lewis, and Dave Jackson The School of Podcasting w/ Dave Jackson The Podcast Producers w/ Corey Coates and Jessica Rhodes The Feed w/ Elsie Escobar and Rob Walch Podcast Method w/ Dan Benjamin Podcast Talent Coach w/ Erik K. Johnson podCast411 w/ Rob Walch The Audacity to Podcast w/ Daniel J Lewis Speaker Live w/ Rob Greenlee            I learned A LOT from all of these people.  Any time I had a question about anything all I needed to do was send an email to any of these people directly and I would get instant answers.  Between these people, and their YouTube channels for the visuals, I was able to build the confidence to launch my podcast!                By this point I had come to the conclusion that I didn’t need to be a player in a field that already had tons of podcasts.  I needed to focus on something I knew more than anything.  I needed to focus on something I didn’t think I knew someone else was doing, a podcast about beards.  It wasn’t going to be podcast about the hipster “trend” that has been going on, it was going to be about the real people that grew before the trend and those who would still stand after.  It was going to be about the contests they all attended, the brotherhood and sisterhood we all found together.  It was going to be about the family we created, the new friends we made all because of something we grew on our faces.  It was about something that we take into our everyday lives and just “do” without thinking.  It is about the styles, and care, the preparation we make, and take, to grow our facial hair.  It was about how we all come together to make differences in or communities, or the communities of our friends.  It was about our travels to other cities to compete for bragging rights and the battles we have had.  It was going to be about the products we use to look handsome, and the tips from experts on how to look the best and take care of ourselves.  It was going to be about all the adventures we have…everyday.  I knew that having a beard, that was abnormally long, lead to a different way of living life.  It is something that draws other peoples eyes and attentions and constantly had people staring or making some dumb remark.  It was a lifestyle that made me feel different and uncomfortable at times all because I chose to grow a beard. Because of my beard I found many other people like me who felt the same and had a lot of the same interests.  This is what I knew, this is what my podcast needed to be about.           I came up with the name “The Beardcaster”, bought the domain, built the site and launched January 1st, 2016.  I was terrified at first that I was doing everything wrong, that I was going to mess up.  After time my confidence built and now 9 months later, 17 episodes, I look back feeling silly.  Everything feels much easier to do.  Recording episodes is much easier.  Editing is much easier.  Uploading and posting is much easier.  The only thing that isn’t easy is growing an audience.  That takes the most work.  It takes finding them and getting in their faces, or beards!  It takes another type of confidence to not be afraid to get out in the world and talk face to face about your “art” and why you believe in it and why they should listen.  The more personal you can become with a person the more likely they may take a listen.              Providing content that is rich and advantageous to a listener is also another challenge a podcaster can find.  The word “value” comes up a lot in conversations with podcasters.  What is the “value” that you provide to your listeners?  The value I try to provide to the people that listen to my podcast is this: learning.  I want them to learn about something they may know nothing about. I want them to learn about something they have been a part of for a long time that they just discovered.  I want them to learn how to take care of themselves.  I want them to learn about people that need help and how those of us in the facial hair world help them out.  I want them to learn about being free of public scrutiny and the judgmental eyes of so many people.  I want them to learn to do something, to be inspired to try something new.  I want them to laugh at everything, to not be so serious and just relax in their own skin; or hair.   Pulpo Beard Oils Waffen Der Whiskerr Oil Brutal Beard Groomed Gorilla Attack Of The Beards The Drunken Book Nerd music by: Sindust Chris Donley Tester

Today I share a story about getting outside of your comfort zone, and we talk with the Real Brian about how his podcast has lead to him getting paid to host two more. Donnie Pushed Publish On His Podcast. I got this email in my inbox: Hello Sir, I am writing this to simply introduce myself and say a big Thank You! Not long ago I was inspired to begin a daunting task of creating a podcast. I have listened to numerous ones over a varied topic span ever since the beginnings of the podcast. So I decided to bite the bullet and give this a go. With thoughts of what fun this could be and eager to learn some new skills I ventured forth into the "glamorous" world of podcasting. Your show has been a go-to for every topic I can imagine. I glean over past episodes for the struggles I am currently facing and words of encouragement along the way. Simply put, it has been indispensable in this process. With that said, I do need to mention that I already belong to JLD's Podcaster's Paradise and the information there has been helpful also, albeit a little pie in the sky- esque. I am a loyal listener now of your show along with the Podcasters Studio and Roundtable. This week I listened to the Glen the Geek almost everyday on the long drives between day job customers. All I can say is WOW. That episode really hit home. The show I have created focuses on the Craft Beer community. I am based out of Knoxville, TN so my main goal was to break into the local scene. I am around 5 episodes deep in the editing process and have just released my first show to my website and submitted to ITunes this week. I have broken the procrastination mold of not releasing due to trying to 'make it perfect'. I realize we all have to start somewhere and I have finally made that big step. Now to grow and promote, along with get much better every time I am behind the mic. -Donnie InebriatedWisdom.com My Reply Donnie, Awesome. You have done what so many people have failed to do, you hit publish. No matter what people say from this point forward, you put it out there, for better or for worse, you hit publish. I'm so glad I inspired you because this email may have just inspired me for my next episode. Do you mind if I read you e-mail on the show? Some steps you can take are to go find your beer peeps. See if there are local brewers (guessing here, not my niche), etc. Be sure to make friends before you start pimping your show (or they won't care). Congrats, and do everyone a favor and put a link to your in your signature. Dave Keeping My Integrity at Podcamp Pittsburgh. So I attended a session on basic audio editing. I could see that the audience at this event were brand new to Podcasting. At the end of day one, I asked if there were any open slots (as they just filled one) and they stated they didn't At dinner that night with Krystal, Nick, and Kim, they said I should do a session. It turns out at Podcamps, anyone can speak anywhere. I resisted. As the former director of podcasting for the new media expo, I know what goes into planning and running a show. I just pictured some guy coming up and saying I'm speaking tomorrow at 11 and my brain exploding. Chris Brogan (one the creators of PodCamps) and I asked him if adding sessions was allowed, and sure enough it was. In fact, it was encouraged. But still I resisted. There I was standing on the edge of my comfort zone. I mean that seems like such an ego move. "Hey, I'm here and I'm going to speak!." This is the wrong attitude. It's valid, based on my experience, but I needed to be open for new information. I had just seen with my own eyes how this group desperately needed a podcasting 101 type of talk. Nick continued to nudge, and I thought of my email to Donnie. This meant believing in myself (I've been doing this 10 years, and as a computer instructor I have to be light on my feet and go with the flow on a regular basis), and of course... Nobody was going to punch me in the face.  (thank you Ryan K Parker of foodcraftsmen.com ) So I did it I had a group of 7ish, and Krstal from Libsyn parascoped it to another 50ish. I had 9 words on a piece of paper and just used my knowledge. Was I nervous? Sure. I did zero rehearsal. At the end of day two I was thanked by the founders for doing that session. Lewis on the Audacity to podcast Simplecast.fm  Podcast Media Host Review [21:00] I have seven piece of criteria when I look at media hosts. These include: 1. Don't change my file (period). 2. Don't limit my storage 3. Don't limit the bandwidth 4. Give me Stats 5. Give me support 6. Don't control my feed. 7. Charge me for it. Simplecast.fm stats $12 a month for unlimited storage and bandwidth. The weird thing is they don't state ANY limits (that's a business plan that opens themselves up for lots of abuse). Their player is interesting as it allows you to speed things up and rewind. They have an interesting "Managers" feature where you can allow multiple people to manage your hosting. They make it easy to add advertising banners on your website. However, they changed my file name, they changed format (they changed it to mono), they also didn't copy over all my ID3 tags. When I sent them an email, 7 days later I still didn't have an answer. This leads me to saying I can't recommend them as a solution. I recommend Libsyn.com and Blubrry.com (you can get a free month using the coupon sopfree at either service). http://youtu.be/blunoEc_Oag Is Your Podcast Useful and Interesting? [31:30] I was reading an article from the Consent Marketing Institute and it said “Great content meets two criteria: It’s useful and it’s interesting.” This got me to thinking and I believe this to be true. I will listen to things that aren't useful (Like the Serial podcast) because it's really interesting. I will listen to boring stuff (like webinars) because they provide useful information. When you are trying to come up with ideas from your show ask yourself is what I'm about to share useful or interesting (preferably both). When its not interesting or useful, I call is "kah-kah, poo-poo." This is why I don't recommend an "episode 0" which is what people would put into their feed to test their iTunes feed. While this was seful in testing your feed, it was not very useful as a first impression. Now I recommend people come out with their best content in episode 1 (and don't be in such a hurry. Congrats to the Forever Fan Podcast [37:13] Troy contact me about doing a quick start, and in a few days he had his podcast launched. (see foreverfanpodcast.com ) If you don't have a website, send me an email with the phrase (quick start) in the title (if you have a podcast just join the School of Podcasting) I send you a link to order your hosting (I earn a commission), and it runs you around $8 a month. You send me the welcome email, and I install Wordpress for you (and some plugins to get you going - you need the graphics and the content) I also give you a free month at the School of Podcasting Ready To Start Podcasting?
