Welcome to The DMF — Discovering Meaning in Film and Acting. I'm Justin Younts, and this is part three with casting director Tiffany Little Canfield of Telsey Company. This one is about something that's been a long time coming — the Academy Awards is finally establishing a casting branch, officially recognizing casting directors for their contributions to film. Tiffany has been part of the push to make that happen, and she talks about what that fight looked like, why it took this long, and what it actually means for casting professionals who have been working behind the scenes for years without that acknowledgment. We get into what the casting branch means going forward, how casting directors can now advocate for themselves and educate the industry about their role, and why every casting decision — not just the stars — is a creative one that shapes the entire film. Tiffany also talks about upcoming projects including Only Murders in the Building and Paradise. We close with Inside the Actors Studio questions. In this episode we discuss:The Academy finally recognizing casting directorsThe establishment of a casting branch within the AcademyWhy casting directors have been overlooked for so longThe creative role of casting in shaping a film's narrativeCollaboration with directors, producers, and actorsUpcoming projects: Only Murders in the Building & Paradise00:00:00 - Introduction 00:00:05 - Recognition of Casting Directors 00:00:28 - The Role of a Casting Director 00:01:18 - The Process and Challenges 00:02:22 - The Journey to Recognition 00:02:38 - The Casting Branch 00:04:34 - Future Projects 00:05:12 - Inside the Actors Studio Questions 00:11:57 - Conclusion#DMF #TiffanyLittleCanfield #CastingDirector #Academy #Oscars #TelseyCompany #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding #Acting #Casting #Filmmaking #Podcast
Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson 100 years ago on June 1, 1926. In late 1954, on the cusp of major Hollywood stardom, Marilyn moved to New York City on a quest to become a better actress and to find a little peace on streets where she could sometimes go unnoticed. The year 1955 was one of discovery for the star of The Seven-Year Itch and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes — exploring the city, working on her craft and generally being the toast of the town. In particular, she came to New York to become a better actress via the Actors Studio and the influence of Lee Strasberg. But she also managed to see the most glamorous corners of New York. That deep connection she made with New York City never left her. As an extra treat, Greg and Tom are joined on the show by Alicia Malone of TCM (and Tom's co-host on “The Official Gilded Age Podcast”) and author of the book Girls on Film: Lessons from a Life of Watching Women in Movies to discuss how the city changed her career and performances. We're big old movie buffs here on the Bowery Boys, and to celebrate a century of Marilyn, we've remastered and re-edited a show we recorded on Marilyn's New York back in 2022. So raise a toast to Marilyn tonight — and put on something a little extra glamorous for fun. This episode was remastered by Kieran Gannon. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Alec Baldwin has hosted Saturday Night Live more than anyone else and has also shown up over the years as a frequent guest and special cast addition. For more than 35 years, he's been one of the show's most reliable and funniest presences. Nick looks back at some of his best work, including standout sketches, recurring bits like his take on Donald Trump, and plenty more. You'll hear behind-the-scenes stories and how some of these moments came together, along with full sketches. Highlights include a Glengarry Glen Ross-style meeting at Santa's workshop, a visit from Charles Nelson Reilly on Inside the Actors Studio, a strange diner exchange between a cowboy and a waitress, and, of course, a little taste of Schweddy Balls. It's a celebration of a legendary SNL host. [Ep 176]
Writer, Michael Elias, talks about growing up in the Catskills, where you had to make your money in the summer to survive the winter, and how that created a lot of tension. He also talks about taking acting classes, dealing with being an actor, and how acting helped him build scenes and characters. He talks about working for Glen Campbell without realizing how talented he was. He discusses his book Benders, L.A. and talks about going to Plato's Retreat and not scoring. He talks about Steve Martin and how The Frisco Kid was not what he originally thought it would be. It was originally supposed to be directed by Mike Nichols and star John Wayne. Carl Reiner may have made The Jerk better. Garry Marshall made Young Doctors in Love better, but some movies simply don't turn out the way you want them to. Michael wants people to know that Jews were all over the West and that minorities helped build this country. He says there was always a hangout somewhere. Mel Brooks was an egalitarian. Michael talks about having many writing partners, including Arnie Kogen, Rich Eustis, and Frank Shaw. He talks about getting kicked off The Ed Sullivan Show, writing for The Tonight Show, and learning from Neil Simon and Ed Weinberger. He wishes he could tell his mother what's going on in his life now and imagines writing letters to her today. He also talks about giving yourself permission to stop reading books halfway through. He remembers me playing with the microphone at my bar mitzvah. He talks about paying rent at forty-two dollars a month while working as a substitute teacher. His father, a doctor, never really understood what he did until he saw the pilot of Head of the Class. Howard Hesseman had demands even though he was about to be fired. Bio: Michael Elias grew up in the Catskill Mountains, a Red Diaper Borscht Belt Baby in a world of artists, intellectuals, tumlers, folk singers, boxers, and Jewish gangsters, some of whom sleep at the bottom of Loch Sheldrake. His childhood heroes were Jerry Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Rocky Marciano, and Abe ‘Kid Twist' Reles. Educated in the classics at St. John's College, Elias took his knowledge of ancient Greek and philosophy to New York, trained at the Actors Studio, acted in The Living Theatre, La MaMa and the Judson Poets Theatre. From there Elias and Frank Shaw dove into the world of stand-up comedy, playing coffee shops, night clubs, with five stints on The Tonight Show. Fired from Ed Sullivan they abandoned the act and came to Hollywood where he and Shaw wrote sit-coms, variety shows, and The Frisco Kid. After parting ways, Elias participated in the anti-Vietnam War movement, earned a subpoena from a Nixon grand jury, and teamed up with Rich Eustis and created Head of the Class. Elias continues to write novels and screenplays in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife Bianca Roberts and their dachshund Mabel. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

THIS IS PART TWO - Listen to part one hereCONTENT HEADS UP: This episode contains discussions of death, dying, end-of-life care, and sensitive topics related to mortality, including chosen suicide and medicalization of death and illness. Listener discretion is advised, especially for individuals who may find these topics distressing or triggering. Please prioritize your emotional well-being while engaging with this content. Also, Ali wants to note that when she asks Karen about her thoughts on suicide, she meant to make a disctinction between “chosen” suicide (when someone wants to live but they are in too much physical pain/their body is too deteriorated without hope of recovery) and “suicide under duress” (meaning due to emotional/psychological/spiritual pain, that may or may not be accompanied by an unavoidably dying body, the person does not want to live). In today's episode, we sit down with the legendary William Stanford Davis, the Emmy-winning actor who's stolen scenes (and hearts) as the unforgettable Mr. Johnson on Abbott Elementary. From his roots in St. Louis to chasing standup comedy in Los Angeles, William's path to Hollywood is as inspiring as it is unexpected. He opens up about breaking into the industry, the lessons he learned from mentors like Martin Landau, and the risks that shaped his craft. And of course, we talk Abbott Elementary. Davis shares the story behind his iconic character, including a risky, improvised line in his audition that might have sealed the deal. He also gives us an insider look into the dynamic ensemble, the balance between script and improvisation, and how he approaches every set as a team player who makes sure to learn everyone's name. Ted Zurkowski in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.tedzurkowski.com/ https://www.honeywestmusic.com/ted-zurkowski.php An acclaimed member of New York's acting community, Ted Zurkowski is a Lifetime Member of the Actors Studio. Last night's Fated Mates Live was so much fun, but now we're back in your earholes again. It's time again for our annual Sarah MacLean deep dive (with no spoilers!). As per tradition, Jen asks Sarah a bunch of fun questions and forces Sarah to talk about her book. And it all ends with Julia Whalen reading two chapters of These Summer Storms! It was a delight to see so many of you in St. Louis yesterday, and to everyone else, we're just as glad you're here with us today. NotesIt's finally time for These Summer Storms! And it might not be too late to see Sarah on book tour! Mary Kay Andrews is very fierce on Instagram, and we love her for it. You can also see her with Renee Adiah, author of the forthcoming Park Avenue, which she mentions at the end of the show. When the New York Times published their Best Books of the 21st Century so far, Sarah shared her ballot. Rhode Island has a long history of being associated with big money. On Inside the Actors Studio, the host James Lipton always ended with the same list of questions, known as the Pivot questions after their originator Bernard Pivot. Similarly, the New York Times column By the Book (Jen called it Get Booked, sorry for any confusion!) has a rotating list of questions, but some are very common. If you are interested in reading some of these columns, check out By The Book: Writers on Literature and the Literary Life, published in 2015. The books on Sarah's nightstand were: The Second Coming by Carter Sherman, It's a Love Story by Annabel Monaghan, Can't Get Enough by Kennedy Ryan, and Full Bloom by Francesca Serritella. As Amy Poeppel publishes her fifth novel, she reflects on lessons learned and discusses the challenges she faced while writing a novel simultaneously set in Berlin and Dallas. Amy Poeppel grew up in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from Wellesley College and worked as an actress in the Boston area, appearing in a corporate industrial for Polaroid, a commercial for Brooks Pharmacy, and a truly terrible episode of America's Most Wanted, along with other TV spots and several plays. While in Boston, she also got her M.A. in Teaching from Simmons College. She is married to David Poeppel, a neuroscientist at NYU and a Max Planck director in Frankfurt. For the past thirty years, they have lived in many cities, including San Francisco, Berlin, and New York, and had three sons along the way. Amy taught high school English in the Washington, DC suburbs, and after moving to New York, she worked as an assistant director of admissions at an independent school where she had the fulfilling experience of meeting and getting to know hundreds of applicant families. She attended sessions at the Actors Studio and wrote the theatrical version of Small Admissions, which was performed there as a staged reading in 2011. Amy's writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Rumpus, LitHub, Working Mother, Points In Case, and The Belladonna. The concept is deeply intertwined with the notions of impermanence (anicca) and rebirth (samsara). Rather than being an end, death is seen as a transition, where the energy of one's consciousness continues in a new form, influenced by karma—the cumulative effects of one's actions, thoughts, and intentions. The ultimate goal is to break free from the cycle of death and rebirth through enlightenment, which means reaching a state of liberation (nirvana) where the mind is free from suffering and attachment. Mindfulness and acceptance of death are considered essential practices, as they help individuals live more fully and prepare for the moment of death with clarity and peace.Green burial is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial practices that emphasizes simplicity, sustainability, and minimal impact on the earth. It typically involves using biodegradable materials, avoiding embalming chemicals, and opting for natural settings like conservation areas or designated green cemeteries. The goal is to allow the body to decompose naturally, returning nutrients to the soil, and preserving the surrounding ecosystem.Lambing season in Scotland, typically from March to May, is a busy and vital time on farms, as thousands of lambs are born each spring. This period is crucial for the meat industry, with farmers carefully tending to both ewes and newborns to ensure their health and growth. While lambing is often seen as a symbol of renewal and the start of spring, it is also a time of intense labor and long days for shepherds, who balance the joy of new life with the practical realities of raising livestock for food production.A Dream Within a DreamBY EDGAR ALLAN POETake this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now,Thus much let me avow —You are not wrong, who deemThat my days have been a dream;Yet if hope has flown awayIn a night, or in a day,In a vision, or in none,Is it therefore the less gone?
In this special episode of The Right Intention, its a celebration of the 88th birthday of Wowza, who is a transformative figure in expressive arts therapy and holistic wellness, who has spent over six decades helping people embrace self-expression and healing.Wowza embodies a spirit of agelessness and vitality, which she attributes to connecting with her "larger self" or "the beloved," an inner source of strength that transcends time and societal expectations.Reflecting on her journey, Wowza shares how she transformed a challenging childhood marked by bullying and isolation into a life of beauty and resilience. Embracing her unique path led her to win Miss Florida and become a runner-up in the Miss America pageant. By the time she reached the Miss America stage, she began to feel the limitations of external validation. When she blanked during a final question, she knew her calling was beyond pageants and moved to New York to pursue acting. In New York, Wowza trained at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg, who taught her to embrace every role authentically, integrating light and shadow. This foundation inspired her to create expressive arts therapy, a method allowing people to explore their “social roles” as characters, releasing limiting beliefs and accessing their true essence.Today, Wowza remains a beacon of unity, founding the "Church of Wow" to encourage people to see each other as living art. Her mantra, "wow," reflects wonder without judgment. In relationships, she advocates for balancing masculine and feminine energies, empowering individuals to embody their authentic selves for deeper, harmonious connections. One of her signature practices, “curtain up, curtain down,” helps people briefly embody and release emotions, fostering mindful self-awareness. In her book, The Sacred Actor: Igniting the Performance Art of Living, she invites readers to view life as a divine play, where each role brings meaning within a larger, universal flow. Her "great hum" practice—a simple daily humming—connects people to the vibration of life, grounding them in unity and love.As Todd and Wowza close, they reflect on love as a universal, transformative force. Wowza encourages listeners to embrace every part of themselves, live authentically, and connect with others from the heart. Her journey and wisdom remind us that by living from this larger self, we find freedom and harmony.Connect with Todd Tononi:Follow Todd on Instagram: @ToddTononiSubscribe to The Right Intentions for more thought-provoking conversations and insights into leadership, personal growth, and living with purpose.Connect with Wowza: https://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Actor-Igniting-Performance-Living/dp/B0D2P73WJ8 Hosted on Acast. I think we have all seen the television series “Mission Impossible.” Martin Landau and Barbara Bain had leading roles in that series. Martin was also in Alfred Hitchcock's “North by Northwest,” “Cleopatra” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” He won an Oscar, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award for his role as Bela Lugosi in “Ed Wood.” He was the head of the Actors Studio, beating out Steve McQueen and 500 others who applied. Martin acted alongside his wife, Barbara Bain, in “Mission Impossible.” Barbara won three Emmys for her performance in the show. The couple returned to television in the 70s with a British science-fiction series which they will talk about in this podcast.
TVC 663.4: Award-winning actress, screenwriter, and director Alessandra Williams talks to Ed about being mentored by Martin Landau early in her career, when she studied at the prestigious Actors Studio; how her background as an gymnast helped her later on, once she became an actress; and why she has immersed herself in all aspects of film production. Alessandra has a dual role in Lissa's Trip, the award-winning film, now available on Tubi, that is loosely inspired by Homer's The Odyssey. Learn more about your ad choices. Alessandra WilliamsTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know actress Alessandra Williams. In this episode, we chat about her growing up in New Jersey, and where some of the best pizza is. Then we get into what made her want to become an actress in the first place. She explains how gymnastics and competitive cheerleading as a youth, helped her win some of her first auditions. Alessandra tells a wonderful story abut moonwalking into an audition for a Bollywood film; and how that turned out. Then we discuss some of her other passions. Alessandra not only acts, but paints, and writes children's books. Naturally, I ask about how and why she became a member of The Actors Studio, and she tells me how Al Pacino helped her get in. We cover a few of her film projects with Peter Berg, and she cracks me up with a tale about working with Gina Gershon. Alessandra shares a couple of stories from the set with Jim Caviezel, and then we talk about her new film Lissa's Trip; where she plays TWO roles. Lissa's Trip is available for free on Tubi TV. Hank GarrettTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Hank Garrett. Hank grew up in the rough streets of Harlem in the 1940's & 1950's. During that time he watched schoolmates die, or go to prison. Then Willie Bryant "The Mayor of Harlem" stepped in; introduced Hank to Sammy Davis Jr, and everything changed. After that, Hank began his careers in Stand up comedy, professional wrestling, martial arts, and eventually acting. In this episode we chat about his journey From Harlem Hoodlum, To Hollywood Heavyweight. That also hapoens to be the title of his new book. Hank shares stories about working with: Benny The Jet Urquidez, Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean MArtin, Buddy Hackett, Chuck Norris, Jerry Lewis Al Lewis, David Frost, and Robert Redford. Fun behind the scenes tales about 'Car 54 Where Are You?', 'Three Days of the Condor', 'That Was The Week That Was', and 'G.I.Joe'. Hank still won't name the New York mobster that gave him his first gun, or the Cosa Nostra that elped out his mom on some interesting occasions. Make sure you check out his book, and get the rest of the amazing accounts of Hank being the very first white comedian to play The Apollo Theater, touring as Tony Bennett's opener, getting kicked out of The Actors Studio, and how he repaid Robert Redford for keeping Hank from going blind! Special thanks to mutual friends Kat & Clint Howard for connecting Hank & me for this conversation.Follow Hank on social media:Twit: @MrHankGarrettInsta: @Mr_Hank_GarrettFB: Hank Garrett

Warning: If you prefer to watch a film with a blank slate, don't listen to this episode if you haven't seen or read Killers of the Flower Moon. While it doesn't give away spoilers or information that isn't widely known, and the film itself will be a powerful discovery given the stunning directing, acting, and musical score, it does prepare you for an unforgettable experience with a crash course on the brutal history. Andrea and Terrell Starr of the essential Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack have been watching the rich offering of Best Picture Oscar contenders, and have a lot to say about Killers of the Flower Moon. While it was eclipsed by buzzier films like Oppenheimer and Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon is a monumental masterpiece that explains how America was founded and the forces we are up against today. No one should be surprised by Trump. Trumpism is what founded our country. Killers of the Flower Moon reminds us of the urgent importance and power of art. This past year marked the 75th Anniversary of the Actors Studio, the nonprofit organization that has shared “truth in acting” with decades of film, television and theater professionals. This episode is the next in our series celebrating some of those responsible for the studio's success. Guests Roberta and Katherine Wallach are the daughters of stage and screen stars Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach. Jackson and Wallach met during a 1946 production of the Tennessee Williams' play, “This Property Is Condemned.” They became early members of the Actors Studio and would go on to perform together in film, tv and theater for decades. Roberta and Katherine are actors in their own right, members of the studio, and sit on its Board of Directors. Katherine Wallach has appeared in “Goodfellas,” “The King of Comedy” and “Gangs of New York” and also uses her creative talents as a jewelry designer. Roberta Wallach is a Drama-Desk nominee and began her film career while still in high school. The siblings share what it was like growing up around acting royalty, their father's perspective on them going into the family business and their thoughts on their parents' enduring legacy.See omny.fm/listener for privacy information.
This past year marked the 75th Anniversary of the Actors Studio, the nonprofit organization that has shared “truth in acting” with decades of film, television and theater professionals, including some of the biggest names in the business. This episode is the first in a series of conversations with some of those responsible for the studio's success. Alec currently serves as Co-President of the Actors Studio and had the opportunity to speak with two leaders within the institution: Co-President Ellen Burstyn, who joined the studio in 1967, is known for her roles in “Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore,”“The Exorcist,” and “Requiem for A Dream” – and also has the distinction of winning the “Triple Crown of Acting:” an Oscar, a Tony and two Emmy Awards. Alec then speaks with Co-Associate Artistic Director Estelle Parsons, who has been with the studio since 1962. Parsons earned an Academy Award for ”Bonnie and Clyde,” the second film she ever made, and has earned five Tony nominations and two Obies in her illustrious career. The two remarkable women share their stories of finding their way to the Actors Studio and the impact it had on their careers – and their craft. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
