This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comDonald McNeil Jr., a 45-year New York Times veteran, comes on the pod to talk with Nancy and Sarah about … so much. The prompt was the recent NYT story, “We Were Badly Misled About the Event That Changed Our Lives.” As the paper of record tries to come correct on Covid, we wanted to hear from the science journalist, one of the first to tell Americans about this strange thing called the coronavirus. A self-declared “cranky old-school” reporter, McNeil landed the story of his career in 2020 and became part of a team that won the Pulitzer. But by 2021, he was gone, amid scandal and speculation. He talks about the bizarre kerfuffle that led to his resignation, mean girl dynamics at the paper, being misled by scientists, and what we do and don't know about Covid-19's origins. As McNeil wrote in Wisdom of Plagues, "Covid coarsened us as a nation... The coarsening cracks our national skin. It makes us more vulnerable to infection."Also discussed:* Nancy tries not to fangirl. She fangirls anyway.* “It's a great newspaper but it's a second-rate corporation, and its personnel stuff is particularly bad.”* The walk McNeil took with James Bennet, a year after both getting booted from the Times, is a play we'd like to see* “Looks like Don nailed it. Let's not tell him.” (!!!!!!)* NYT brass on their writing staff: “Widgets made here.”* Young turks vs. cranky old-timers in union leadership* The Daily Beast and Gawker do not cover themselves in glory* "The Western focus on personal liberty above all can kill."* The Mike Pesca of it all* The hope that Covid might “unite us with a common enemy” like WWII. Awww, what happened instead? We turned on each other.* “Ecstasy is a very good drug to get you talking”* McNeil = not a fan of Jay Battacharya* Thoughts on RFK!Plus, McNeil explains what “hot-box” once meant, where he thinks H5-N1 is going, how cancel culture is like the French Revolution, and much more!Does McNeil think Covid-19 was engineered in a virology lab or evolved in the wet market? Send us a textPlaywright Megan Gogerty streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight right before the opening of her one-woman show and reimagining of the story of Beowulf. It's a fascinating episode with tons of wisdom to take in, unpack, and apply. We discuss one-person adaptations and letting the play be itself, the importance of intuition, the use of two ideas that collide, and knowing what the question is. We delve into the structure of a one-person vs multi-actor piece, the structure of a one-person show, the audience as another character, smaller markets and selling widgets, who you vs who knows you, accessibility, gatekeeping, and asking for permission, and the role of the audience and making them ask questions. The more this podcast grow, the more every episode offers something new. Megan delivers. Enjoy. Friday's Daily Puck Drop with Jason “Puck” Puckett featured Jim Moore, who stops by every Monday, Wednesday and Friday's.  They were joined by Lofa Tatupu, who previewed the Seahawks game against the Minnesota Vikings.  PuckSports handicapper, TroyWins.com, previews the weekend of football games and Chris Egan, KING 5 wraps up the show as he always does. Puck and Jim open up the show talking about Jim's idea of the Washington State Cougars hiring Rick Neuhiesel.  Does Puck think that would be a good idea?  If not Neuhiesel, than where do the Cougs go?  Jake Dickert made some disparaging remarks about the recruiting footprint in the northwest at his introductory press conference at Wake Forest. Puck and Jim react to what he said.  WSU DT David Gusta entered the transfer portal and his father is upset at Puck because he played a pair of clips from Gusta's appearance with Puck a month ago where the defensive tackle said he would never leave and enter the portal.  Former Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu joins Puck and Jim to talk Seahawks football and their upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings.  Before they talked Seahawks, Lofa commented on the state of college football and how the current system is broken.  Is Sunday's game a must win for Seattle?  Lofa weighs in on that topic.  Can Seattle establish a running game against Minnesota, or will they have to rely on their aerial attack against the Vikings?  Finally, the each give their Highest Performer of the Weekend, brought to you by 1937Farms.com.   PuckSports handicapper, TroyWins.com drops by to preview the slate of college and NFL games.  It was a good week for Troy, and he's back to make you even more money this weekend! Before Jim leaves, they end his appearance with Friday Voicemails, where they hear from a Cougar supporter who defends Jake Dickert and Dick Vitale joins to bring some laughter to the boys after a rough week. Chris Egan, KING 5, joins Jason “Puck” Puckett for his weekly visit. Chis reacts to the news of the week involving the Cougars and agrees with Puck that college athletics as we remember it is long over and will never be the same which is sad and unfortunate.  Egan details his long day on the pickleball court and how he was cramping up in his car on the way home to his families Christmas Party!  Egan also offers advice to Puck on what last minute gifts he should get for his wife with Christmas looming. Puck and Egan talk about their coaching jobs for middle school basketball and how difficult it is to have to cut a kid, but Egan offers up some great advice how to handle it and tells a great story about hard work and perseverance about coaching his soccer team this year. Lastly, “Hey, What the Puck!?” Treat college athletics, players and coaches as widgets.  They are just transactional pieces moving forward. Take the human emotion out of the equation moving forward because the coaches and players have.

GeekNights with Rym + Scott

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about widgets. Mostly status and telemetry widgets that people like to put on their desktops or their phones. They have their uses, but are usually useless. In the news, Cloudplane is shutting down in December, Adobe's Project Turntable is stunning, and Tesla's robots were (obviously) fake.If you are able to vote in the United States, make a plan to vote. You can't sit this one out. You can't vote for a "third party." It's frankly unethical to do anything but vote straight ticket for Democrats. There are two power-seeking coalitions in America. Choose the one that you want setting the rules for the next election. The Democrats are the literal best option we have.
