Nuru'l-Izah isimli eserinde Hasan b. Ammar eş Şürünbülali (r.âleyh) şöyle demiştir: Hasta ve özürlü olmayan sağlam erkeklere imam olacak kişide bulunması gereken şartlar altıdır. Bunlar: 1. İslâm (Müslüman) olmak 2. Bulûğ: Bu şart buluğa ermiş fertlerden oluşan bir cemaate imam olmak için gerekli olan bir şarttır. Yoksa buluğa ermemiş çocuklardan oluşan bir gruba imam olmak için baliğ olmak ayrıca şart görülmemiştir. Yani çocukların kendi aralarında yapacakları cemaat sahihtir. 3. Akıl 4. Erkek olmak: Bu şart, erkeklere imam olmak için gereklidir. İleride geleceği üzere; kadınlara imam olmak için erkek olmak şart değildir. Kadının diğer kadınlara imam olması sahihtir. Fakat mekruh olduğundan dolayı kadınların diğer kadınlara imamlık yapmaları doğru ve caiz görülemez. Ancak buna rağmen yapacak olurlarsa kadınlardan biri öne çıkmadan safın ortasında durup diğerlerine imamlık yapar. Bu şekilde kılacak oldukları namaz fasit ve batıldır denmez. 5. Kıraat: Kifayet edecek miktar Kur'an-ı Kerim okuyabilmesi. 6. Burun kanaması, dil tutukluğu-pelteklik gibi özürlerin bulunmamasıyla birlikte namaza mani olacak abdestsizlik, necaset ve avretin açılması gibi bir durumun bulunmaması. Aynı özür sahiplerinin biri diğerine imam olabilir. Burada aranan esas kural; imam olanın hâli cemaat olanın hâlinden daha kuvvetli veya ona müsavi (eşit) olmasıdır.
