Councilwoman Carmalitha L. Gumbs currently represents the City of South Fulton’s District 2. She joins “Closer Look” to discuss her decision to run against incumbent Mayor Khalid Kamau for the city’s top seat. In 2023, Zaire Byrd says he was “unjustly expelled” from Tri-Cities High School in Fulton County. According to Byrd, it was due to a first-time offense of fighting with students who allegedly weren’t supposed to be on campus. The situation proved to be a life-changing moment for him. However, Byrd kept his life on a positive track and is now a freshman at Alabama A&M University. His mother, DeAndrea Byrd, is also using her son’s expulsion as an opportunity to enact change for Black students, who studies show, are disciplined at a disproportionate rate. Georgia is among the ten states that have refused to expand Medicaid. But Georgia is the only state that imposes a work requirement for its alternative to Medicaid. It's called Georgia Pathways to Coverage. A new analysis of Georgia Pathways by The Current and ProPublica shows the program has not met its goals for providing coverage, and even some Republicans wanted to back away from it. Margaret Coker, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Current Georgia, talks about her latest article that investigates the reported shortfalls of Georgia Pathways to Coverage.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the fifth episode of our Earthly Reads series, we dive into a conversation with the renowned Alexis Pauline Gumbs, author of Survival Is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde. This episode offers a preview of the live Earthly Reads Book Study, now available for purchase at forthewild.world/bookstudy.Throughout the conversation, Gumbs threads together her thoroughly-researched and deeply-felt knowledge of Audre Lorde with her own personal wit, observation, and openness. She also speaks to her understanding of Lorde's work as “geological,” following the connection Lorde draws between Blackness and our existence at every layer of Earth's interior. Reminding us of the value of the collective, Gumbs shares lessons for reciprocity, earthly embodiment, and the poetry of living. Earthly Reads is a podcast series and online book study featuring conversations with some of our favorite authors including adrienne maree brown, Marcia Bjornerud, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Prentis Hemphill, Tricia Hersey, and Céline Semaan. This episode is just a small glimpse into some of the incredible live conversations that will take place throughout the book study. For more details about the series and how to purchase access to the full study, visit forthewild.world/bookstudy.  Alexis Pauline Gumbs is a Queer Black Troublemaker and Black Feminist Love Evangelist and an aspirational cousin to all sentient beings. Her work in this lifetime is to facilitate infinite, unstoppable ancestral love in practice. Her poetic work in response to the needs of her cherished communities has held space for multitudes in mourning and movement. Alexis's co-edited volume Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines (PM Press, 2016) has shifted the conversation on mothering, parenting and queer transformation. Alexis has transformed the scope of intellectual, creative and oracular writing with her triptych of experimental works published by Duke University Press (Spill: Scenes of Black Feminist Fugitivity in 2016, M Archive: After the End of the World  in 2018 and Dub: Finding Ceremony, 2020.) Unlike most academic texts, Alexis's work has inspired artists across form to create dance works, installation work, paintings, processionals, divination practices, operas, quilts and more.  ♫  The music featured in this series is by Cool Maritime, Matt Baldwin, and Sharada Shashidhar and Caleb Buchanan from the compilation Staying: Leaving Records Aid to Artists Impacted by the Los Angeles Wildfires courtesy of our partner Leaving Records. Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. 150 Years Ago (May 1874) A litter of six foxes was removed from a den at Mr. Snook's farm at Low Point [Chelsea] and killed. In the hole were the remnants of a turkey, goose, hen, woodchuck and two weasels. A man walking along the tracks near Dutchess Junction was crossing the drawbridge when trains approached from both directions. He saved himself by jumping into the water. The Savings Bank in Fishkill Landing installed an iron front manufactured at Stanton's works in Newburgh. Swift's Hall, a former church, was sold at Matteawan to Horatio Nelson Swift, known as "the lawnmower man" because of his innovations in that industry. After a reader threatened to punch him over an article, a reporter for the Newburgh Telegraph commented that "he's an idiot who thinks or believes that a reporter can please everybody." The Sunday School teachers and students at St. Luke's at Matteawan presented Dr. Duncan, the church's pastor for nearly 20 years, with a gold watch. The Matteawan Enterprise folded. The competing Fishkill Standard attributed the closure to "the fact that there is room and patronage sufficient for but one newspaper in this neighborhood." Made despondent by illness, Richard Omerod, 57, of Matteawan, a felt skirt printer at the seamless clothing plant, killed himself with a razor. He was survived by his wife and four children. Passengers on the northbound express arriving in Poughkeepsie reported large fires on the Fishkill Mountains as the train emerged from the Highlands. Charles Hoag was killed when his team became unmanageable and crossed the tracks in front of a train. The horses also died. After a young clergyman in Brockport commented that the women in town could make rich cake but not good bread, he received loaves from 14 single women in his congregation. 125 Years Ago (May 1899) A northbound express hit four brickyard employees near Dutchess Junction, killing one and seriously injuring the others. The men said they did not see the train until it was almost upon them. Fishkill Landing officials borrowed a road-scraping machine from Cold Spring. C.A. Palmer of Fishkill Landing, and formerly of Cold Spring, was credited with taking the first photograph of Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh 36 years earlier. Michael Sliney, a model prisoner at the Matteawan asylum, where he had been sent for life after being convicted of murder, accompanied a guard to the pitch-black basement to make a repair. The men made their way with matches, and as the guard lit a new one, Sliney hit him with an iron pipe. The men grappled in the darkness until the physicians upstairs heard the guard's cries. A few years earlier, Sliney had starred in a minstrel performance at the prison, but praise for his acting brought him notoriety and attention to his crime, so he withdrew. The debate team from Haldane High School visited Matteawan High School to discuss the question: "Resolved, that the U.S. construct and operate the Nicaragua canal." [The U.S. abandoned plans to build the passage after it purchased interest in the Panama Canal.] A service at the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at Fishkill Landing ended in chaos. The Rev. S.V. Gumbs had been investigated but exonerated by the trustees after he called several times on Alice Hunt, which led to "talk" in the congregation. During a baptism, Alice's sister, Emma, apparently having taken offense at Addie Henry's role in the episode, punched her in the face, prompting a fight that led to a steward, Thomas Lefevre, being thrown through a window. A Cold Spring man who rode his bicycle to a Matteawan saloon came out to find someone had slashed its tire. About 500 brickyard workers went on strike for higher wages and lower daily quotas. Most employers granted the demands and the men returned to work. 100 Years Ago (May 1924) Sarah Greene left her $5,000 estate [about $92,000 today] to the Highland Hospital, ap...

Alexis Pauline Gumbs joins Windham-Campbell Prizes director Michael Kelleher to talk about the beauty of Audre Lorde's poetry and why more people should know her as a poet as well as an essayist. READING LIST: The Black Unicorn by Audre Lorde Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir Broadside Press "A Supermarket in California!" by Allen Ginsberg For a full episode transcript, click here. Born in Summit, New Jersey in 1982, Alexis Pauline Gumbs is an activist, critic, poet, scholar, and educator. A self-described “Queer Black Troublemaker and Black Feminist Love Evangelist,” Gumbs uses hybrid forms to re-envision old narratives and engage with the history of Black intellectual-imaginative work. Her four books of prose-poetry include Dub: Finding Ceremony (2020), Undrowned (2020), M Archive (2018), and Spill: Scenes of Black Feminist Fugitivity (2016). Dub, M Archive, and Spill form a kind of triptych, each engaging with the work of a Black woman theorist: Sylvia Wynter in Dub; M. Jacqui Alexander in M Archive; and Hortense Spillers in Spill. In all her work, Gumbs raises the stakes of literature within and beyond the page. She is a people's poet, awake to the form's capacity to imagine alternative worlds, across and through time. Her worldview is capacious and paradigm-shifting, speaking to urgent realities with exuberant love, and inviting activists, artists, and readers alike to join in her participatory presentations. A graduate of Barnard College and Duke University, Gumbs is also the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (2022), a Whiting Award (2022), and a National Humanities Center Fellowship (2020). She lives in Durham, North Carolina, and is currently at work on a biography of Audre Lorde. In Sint Maarten, she saw an opportunity to build a community for LGBTQ+ folks and a political party for everyone. Now, as a Member of Parliament, her ideas about inclusion seek to reduce the brain drain caused by some Sint Maarteners not feeling welcome. Her authenticity and visibility provide hope to people who thought they might not have a place on the island.   Melissa Gumbs is a member of Parliament in Sint Maarten, a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, winning her seat in 2020 as part of a new political party. Born and raised on Sint Maarten she moved to Miami to attend St. Thomas University earneing a Bachelor's in Business Administration and a Master's in International Business. She spent seven years in The Hague, The Netherlands, where she worked as a Market Research Analyst at TMF Netherlands B.V, providing her a front-row seat to understand the impact mergers of global corporations have on small economies. In 2011, she co-founded Unified Sint Maarten Connection with Cyriel Pfennings, which kicked off a long tenure of serving as board member or volunteer for various non-profits related to affecting social change. She served as board member of Foresee Foundation, as advisory board member for SAFE SXM, the island's primary LGBT-focused foundation. In 2016, Melissa returned home to St. Maarten where she joined United Telecommunication Services as a Section Manager. She was instrumental in returning communication to the island after the devastating Hurricane Irma in 2017. Outside of her work at UTS, Melissa continued her volunteer work and established a new political party. In January 2020, along with seven other candidates, Melissa contested the 2020 St. Maarten Parliamentary elections on the Party for Progress slate, which won two seats. Outside of her work, Melissa enjoys video games, movies, reading, writing short stories, and travel.

The All Pro Series has Gumbs partnering with two of his friends, Ike Taylor and Leon Searcy who have had stellar NFL careers. This year each of the brands in the portfolio saw something new come to the Trade Show. If there was a theme with this year's offerings by Howard G, it would be adding Connecticut Shade offerings to several of the brands. This year, we found Howard G Cigars to be one of the revelations of the show. The company brings an excellent portfolio of cigars, and some wonderful people behind the brand. 0:00 Intro.1:34 Start of interview.2:12 Keir's "origin story". He grew up in the Bay Area and went to high school in Oakland where he ran track and got a scholarship to go to Ohio State. After realizing he wasn't going to be an Olympian, he decided to study law at U Penn. When he graduated in 1999, he joined the SEC where, among other matters, he was part of the shareholder proposals taskforce which led him on the path of corporate governance. After 6 years at the SEC, he joined Covington & Burling where he practiced for about 13 years. In his last year at Covington he worked on the Uber investigation, after which he was hired to join the company as Associate General Counsel for Corporate (where he led the IPO, the company's corporate governance and ESG programs). He later got promoted to Deputy GC. He joined Broadridge Financial Solutions as Chief Legal Officer in 2021.5:55 Keir's role on the governance assessment for the Holder Report in 2017 [where his firm recommended that Uber focus on four prevailing themes with regard to taking the following remedial measures: tone at the top, trust, transformation, and accountability]. His headline: "Governance directly and unequivocally impacts value." "For me, Uber is the quintessential example for that." "At that time, Uber was king of the world: the largest and most valuable Unicorn, rapidly expanding around the world, they had radically changed how people got around." "Uber's scandal started with Susan Fowler's blog post (which indicated a culture in need of change) and the #DeleteUber campaign post travel ban fiasco in NYC." "These events set the company into a spiral, where they had to address these governance and cultural issues in order to thrive and survive."13:40 On Silicon Valley's "growth at all costs" and "founder empowerment" culture, and the unique distinctions between private vs public corporate governance practices: "The real question in my mind is has Silicon Valley learned its lesson? Have the VCs learned?" "Here is the truth of it: for every Theranos, Uber or WeWork, there is a Facebook, and let's be very candid here, FB is still very successful - if you were an original investor in FB you have done very well for yourself - despite the company not embracing the best corporate governance practices [and yet FB is still thriving]." "[Despite some of the governance scandals in tech companies] there is certainly more awareness now about how corporate governance can impact value."19:07 On the evolution of corporate governance and the growing influence of institutional investors. Its impact on private venture-backed companies: "There must be a governance transition based on the growing number of investors participating in the company's evolution (particularly if/when the company goes public)."25:15 On the history and focus of Broadridge Financial Solutions.27:50 On the role of technology, Blockchain, Meme Stocks and Proxy Voting. The Delaware Vice-Chancellor Travis Laster Speech at CII: "The Block Chain Plunder: Using Technology to Clean Up Proxy Plumbing and Take Back the Vote." (2016) The SEC's Proposal to Reduce Risks in Clearance and Settlement. "I'm not sure blockchain will be the technological solution that everyone is embracing."33:36 On proxy contests ("the level of proxy contests seems lower than what we would have expected."), and the new SEC rules on universal proxy cards. This rule will start applying this August ("will it meaningful increase the number of proxy contests? It's an open question at this point.")40:30 Keir's thoughts on boardroom diversity, including SB-826 and AB-979 getting struck down in California Courts: "I personally would not read too much into those [court decisions in California] for two reasons: 1) Spinning in the wind  and 2) "the horse has left the barn" on the topic of boardroom diversity." "Investors, employees, customers and the general public all care about the composition of a board from a diversity perspective." 45:05 His thoughts on the SEC's current agenda. "There is no doubt that there is a very pro-enforcement agenda in place right now." "There is a new Sheriff in town." The EY Enforcement Action (where EY had to pay a $100M penalty for employees cheating on CPA ethics exams and misleading investigation). Dissent from Commissioner Hester Pierce.51:13 On the politicization of boards and how companies and boards have to deal with hot (and controversial) social topics. Assembling a group of employees to handle how, when and what should the company address about these issues. "It's an incredibly hard challenge for GCs and other senior executives." "Employees, customers and investors expect you to address these issues." "How you communicate is super important." His view on the "Mission-focused company" approach taken by Coinbase: "For me, that probably means that I will never be a Coinbase customer because I care deeply about the company to whom I give my money." "I think of Procter & Gamble as the gold standard on how to communicate effectively around these thorny questions." 58:04 A book that has greatly influenced his life: The Autobiography of Malcom X, by Malcom X and Alex Haley (1965)59:00- Who were your mentors, and what did you learn from them? Marty Dunn, former Deputy Director and Chief Counsel of the SEC and former partner at OMM and MoFo.David Martin, partner at Covington & Burling. He was his "Dutch uncle" ("someone who is going to be very hard on you privately, but in public will sing your praises.")1:00:35 - Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by? From Trillion Dollar Coach (biography of Bill Campbell) by Alan Eagle, Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg (2019):  “Leadership is not about you, it's about service to something bigger: the company, the team. Bill believed that good leaders grow over time, that leadership accrues to them from their teams. He thought people who were curious and wanted to learn new things were best suited for this. There was no room in this formula for smart alecks and their hubris.”1:02:17 - An unusual habit or an absurd thing that he loves: "Zombie Apocalypse everything!"1:03:04 - The living person he most admires: A lot of people but it's a tie: AOC (on the way she uses social media) and Bill Gates (on his transition from business to making a better world).Keir Gumbs is the Chief Legal Officer of Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc., where he oversees the legal, compliance and physical security teams. Prior to joining Broadridge, Keir served as Deputy General Counsel and Deputy Corporate Secretary of Uber. Before Uber, Keir was a Partner for nearly a decade at Covington & Burling. Keir's career includes six years of service with the SEC, where, immediately prior to joining Covington & Burling in 2005, he served as Counsel to SEC Commissioner Roel C. Campos. __ You can follow Evan on social media at:Twitter: @evanepsteinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/epsteinevan/ Substack: https://evanepstein.substack.com/__Music/Soundtrack (found via Free Music Archive): Seeing The Future by Dexter Britain is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License

While building a career in financial services by working with large banks and investment firms, Dionne Gumbs grew increasingly bothered by the inequities in access to capital. She left the corporate world to pursue a big idea: remove the obstacles that prevent women and people of color from accessing the financial tools they need to succeed. In 2018, she launched GenEQTY, a fintech platform that provides small business owners with tools to scale their businesses. “Build what you can until you can't build it anymore,” Gumbs says of working for larger financial institutions. “Ultimately, I just knew it was time.” She turned her idea into a business plan through the Bush Institute's Presidential Leadership Scholars Program. MasterCard's Start Path Program has given her additional runway to scale the platform. “It's not just about the technology and the bank products; it's about the voice of the people we want to serve,” Gumbs says. “Small businesses are such a big market. These are businesses focused on growing and creating great products and services for the communities they live in. Let's listen to those voices and home in on what specifically those voices need.” Gumbs charts her path into entrepreneurship, including a disappointing failure before GenEQTY. She talks about the way the reception to GenEQTY has changed since the murder of George Floyd and the social uprising that followed. “If I had stopped at those moments in time when people said this is not needed, I wouldn't be here today,” Gumbs says. “There's something special about a Black woman charting a fintech path…there's a belief that, she's listening to us. She's going to get it done.” After our conversation with Gumbs we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Schulze School of Entrepreneurship and Associate Dean Laura Dunham for a conversation about access to capital and pursuing ideas that matter. “At St. Thomas we always tell our students that entrepreneurship is about solving problems that matter to you and creating value for others,” Dunham says. For Gumbs, that means thinking about how to make it easier for women and people of color to obtain funds that are increasingly available for entrepreneurs, but still daunting to access. “Business ownership, along with home ownership, is one of the best paths to create wealth. She's thinking about how to make that easier.”
