Nate follows his suddenly oppressed nose to Uber-Moguera's back room and discovers he has a stowaway--Dr. Dante Dourif! The mad scientist needed a place to stay while he was at a “xeno-botany” conference in London. But before Nate can chew him out too much, Konga, who's kaiju-sized again, is taking his inferiority complex out on Big Ben (unlike in 1961), but even Jet Jaguar's heroics can't halt the big ape's raging rampage. Then Dr. Dourif says he has an idea on how to stop Konga.... Get your Magic Mind subscription here https://magicmind.com/CRYING20 You get up to 48% off with my code: CRYING20 This week the boys discuss the movie Child's Play and the campy explosion horror Join us on the journey. Trivia • Inspired by a real toy craze: The film was partly inspired by the Cabbage Patch Kids and My Buddy dolls, both highly popular in the 1980s, which caused a toy craze among children. • Original concept: The original version of the script, titled Batteries Not Included, had a more psychological angle. In it, Andy's blood would mix with the doll's latex skin, bringing it to life as a manifestation of Andy's anger. Chucky would act out Andy's suppressed feelings, making the audience question whether Chucky was real or just a figment of Andy's imagination. • Chucky's name: The name “Charles Lee Ray” is a combination of three real-life killers: Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald (JFK's assassin), and James Earl Ray (MLK Jr.'s assassin). • Chucky's voice: Legendary actor Brad Dourif voices Chucky. He also portrayed Charles Lee Ray in the live-action scenes at the beginning. Dourif's performance is a big part of what makes Chucky such an iconic villain. • Multiple puppets used: The filmmakers used a variety of techniques to bring Chucky to life, including puppetry, animatronics, and even a little person in a Chucky suit for certain scenes. It took multiple puppeteers to control the doll's movements. • Banned in some countries: Child's Play was banned in certain countries due to concerns that it would inspire violent behavior in children. The film was controversial in the UK after it was linked to real-life crimes, including the murder of a toddler, although the connection was never proven. • Chucky's look: Chucky's design was deliberately made to look cute at first, so the transformation into a menacing, murderous doll would be even more jarring. • The knife scene: In the original script, Chucky was supposed to stab his victims with a hammer, but it was changed to a knife to make the murders more intense and iconic. • Chucky's transformation: Throughout the movie, Chucky's doll face becomes more human-like as he spends more time as the doll, showing that Ray's soul is becoming more trapped in the body. • Andy's actor: Alex Vincent, who played Andy Barclay, was just six years old during filming. He reprised his role as Andy in Child's Play 2 and later returned to the franchise in Cult of Chucky and Chucky (the TV series). • Real-life voodoo connection: The voodoo elements in the movie were inspired by real-life practices, but they were fictionalized for the sake of the film. The filmmakers consulted with a voodoo priest to get some ideas, though the final result was largely a Hollywood invention. • Influence on pop culture: Chucky became one of the most recognizable horror icons, standing alongside characters like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers. His humor and personality set him apart from more silent killers of the era. Remember, you can now catch INCYCShow on all Socials or check our Website INCYCSHOW.com YouTube and Pandora. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! We interrupt our regular episode schedule for a “special report” on the Skull Island “anime” from Netflix and Powerhouse Animation. (Yes, the first “special report” was an experiment and the other a gag, but work with us). Obviously, Nate calls on his animation experts, Drew and Jacob of The Cel Cast, to discuss this, well, train wreck. SPOILER WARNING: It's the worst thing in the MonsterVerse (although, its place in that shared universe is dubious). It has maybe 1.5 good episodes out of eight. But prepare yourselves, Kaiju Lovers, for Nate to “cross the podcast streams” for the most epic “rantmaster” ever on MIFV! (Take that, Little Orphan Annie!) Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! MIFV MAX members Michael “The Man of Many Nicknames” Hamilton and Daniel “Godzilla Novelization Project” DiManna sponsored this Patreon episode on the semi-obscure ‘80s cartoon Dinosaucers, a comedy-action series about anthropomorphic alien dinosaurs battling each other. Sadly, Nate doesn't find it as cool as that description sounds, much to his guests' chagrin. The nostalgic Michael and ever-positive Danny make valiant defenses of the show—even when it gets culturally insensitive and a bit cringey. But then it has flashes of brilliance like when the characters travel to Japan and get in a pseudo-Godzilla movie and play a workout video from Chuck No-Wrist. You read that right! Episodes covered: “Dinosaur Valley,” “Sleeping Booty,” “The Truth about Dragons,” “Age of Aquariums,” and “Karatesaurus Wrecks.” Beforehand, Nate tries—and fails—to sneak past a Space Beastman to acquire the rare scotch for WHG3 and enlists H.E.A.T.'s super-spy, Monique Dupre, for help. Afterward, he and Jet Jaguar take the scotch to Nessie's Brasserie, where they meet an overeager Bonnie and H.E.A.T.'s techie, Randy Hernandez, and acquire a micro-SD card with evidence against Winter—that requires a password to avoid deleting the data! This episode was edited by Christopher Riner and Nathan Marchand. The prologue and epilogue, “Hijinks,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. It's not often Nate has actors from kaiju films on the show, let alone two of his buddies! Yes, believe it or not, his friends Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) and Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) both “starred” and “co-directed” the independent schlock-fest ZillaFoot from SRS Cinema. In this episode, which is more of an interview than a review/discussion, Daniel and Elijah talk about how they got involved with this movie and what they did in it. They also try to explain its convoluted history and divulge some juicy insider info! It's the definitive podcast episode on ZillaFoot! (Worst bragging rights ever…?) Hello, Kaiju Lovers! To celebrate Ray Harryhausen's birthday (and their birthdays), Nate is joined by the “Littlest Gatekeeper,” Elijah Thomas of Kaiju Conversation, to continue their yearly series discussing the filmography of the stop-motion master. Today, it's 1977's Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. (Classic rock and Rocky III references, anyone?) It's the third in the unconnected Sinbad trilogy from Columbia Pictures and stars John Wayne's son, Dr. Quinn, and the Second Doctor (Who). This was Nate and Elijah's first time watching the film. Elijah managed not to fall asleep this time—but that doesn't mean he liked it! We're prepared for angry letters. :P Check Elijah's Linktree for ET13 Productions (https://linktr.ee/ET13_PRODUCTIONS) and the Linktree for Kaiju Conversation (https://linktr.ee/Kaiju_Convers). In this JAFAX panel, you'll take a crash course in the Ultraman series with Nathan Marchand! This required a bit of tweaking because it angered the automated YouTube overlords that Nathan dared show the trailer for Ultraman Blazar, which is why it cuts off at the end. Hey, Kaiju Lovers! To tide you over while I finalize the next few episodes, here's an abridged version of the 4 ½ hour livestream I did with Elijah Thomas of the Kaiju Conversation podcast. In this excerpt, we talk with Mark Bailey, the editor of Giant Bug Cinema: A Monster Kid's Guide. This was a collection of essays on B-movies featuring huge insects, to which both Elijah and I contributed. The three of us discuss what we wrote, the origins of the book, and why we wrote it. The most exciting part is the book was nominated for a Rondo Award! And you can help the book win using the link below! While contemplating if raiding the Boardroom is a good idea, Nate stumbles across the second episode of the Monster Island Gatekeepers podcast, which was broadcast April 1, 2022. It features a half-drunk William H. George III attempting to discuss how, contrary to popular belief, loving the MonsterVerse makes one a true kaiju fan—with the Old Janitor. Hilarity ensues. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Nate is joined by a fresh face on the show: gaming journalist and podcaster Alex McCumbers. It makes sense because today's “Ameri-kaiju” film is Rampage (2018) starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which is based on a classic arcade game. While the movie is “almost good,” as Alex puts it, it does embrace some of the wackiness of its origins with wisecracking “Agent Negan” and cartoonish villains. But it never quite replicates the campy yet dark tone of the source material (I mean, c'mon, the evil corporation in the game was called “Scumlabs”). There's some brief talk about CRISPR, which Nate wished he'd researched as the Toku Topic, but he promised Alex it'd be on the history of kaiju video games. Before today's broadcast, Nate reports to Mister Gold, who tells him he is aware of Nate's text messages with Jessica the day she freed the Ymir. Now Mister Gold says he's not sure he can trust Nate. After that harrowing experience, Nate and his merry band of secret rebels go to the last place he ever wants to go to get info from the last person he ever wants to see: the pub Nessie's Brasserie and its proprietor, William H. George III. It's an all-out sass war as soon as they walk in. Check out Alex's website and podcast, Forever Classic Games (https://foreverclassicgames.com/). The prologue and epilogue, “Getting the Messages,” was written by Michael Hamilton and Nathan Marchand. Guest Cast Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold and William H. George III Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward Sarah Marchand as Jessica Shaw Daniel DiManna as N.I.G.E.L. Introducing Olivia Reed as Bonnie Lass Additional music: “Evil Rising” by David Fesliyan “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo “The Campbells Are Comin'” by Nesrality “Bonnie Dundee” by Nesrality “Bonnie Mary Hay” by Newrality “Oh, Charlie Is My Darling” by Nesrality “Scots Wha Ha'e wi' Wallace Bled” by Nesrality Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ. On today's episode of One Cross Radio, we're sharing an episode we got to be a guest on over on the Monster Island Film Vault earlier this year! To cover all bases and links, I'ma hit you with the summary from the original episode! Hope you enjoy, and God bless my friends! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” continues with a bit of an unusual entry; one that, serendipitously, Nate also covered around the same time on his other podcast, The Power Trip: the controversial Power Rangers (2017). While Nate has grown to appreciate this film quite a bit, he intentionally brought on Chris Cooke (co-host of One Cross Radio, Radio Arcade, and Powerbombs and Piledrivers) to discuss it because he does not. However, these two find more common ground than you'd think. That was surprisingly true in today's Toku Topic, which is a discussion of representation in media. This serves as a great companion to the Power Trip episode. Before today's broadcast, Nate entered his office to find sitting in his chair none other than Mr. Gold. After a thinly veiled threat of “termination,” Nate divulges a secret about Jimmy to him. Afterward, the infamous “Not-Goldar” attacks Monster Island out of nowhere—but help arrives in the form of a newly powered-up Karone! But even Nate, Chris, and Jimmy get in on the monster-fighting action thanks to Mechani-Kong Mk. 2. The prologue and epilogue, “With Friends Like You,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. Guest Cast Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold Celeste Mora as Karone Additional music: “Evil Rising” by David Fesliyan “Pacific Rim,” “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy,” and “Go, Go, Power Rangers” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ. Check out Nathan's spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The final “Godzilla Redux” episode of season three features three guests! Longtime staples Joe and Joy Metter and first-timer Brendan Morley join Nate to discuss Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (aka Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster). It's Brendan's favorite Godzilla film, so it was only natural he'd be here. Nate enticed Joe and Joy to return by having them watch the “banned” Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode that riffed the film. That means the entire gamut is run because Nate watched it subtitled while Brendan watched the international dub. The Metters, as the resident kaiju newbies, notice and appreciate some things hardcore fans take for granted—including what might be an Easter egg no one else has ever seen! It's an MIFV exclusive, people! Listen to learn what it is! Before the broadcast, Nate meets a new girl who brings him a press release that says Jimmy is in jail, requiring Jet Jaguar to fill in for him on the show. Then Jessica shows up to berate Nate about taking her job. Afterward, Jessica hears from Mimo that Mothra DNA is being stolen by a Bug Lady, so she intercedes as Crystal Lady. But this new foe proves too strong—until she's helped by Whambat! Check out Brendan's YouTube channel: youtube.com/@AutisticLizardProductions. The prologue and epilogue, “Severing Family Ties! Jessica Fights Nate and Daggermoth,” was written by Nathan Marchand. This episode was edited by Kim Lacanilao of Nuclear Lizard Media (https://www.nuclearlizardmedia.com/) and Nathan Marchand. Guest Cast: Sarah Marchand as Jessica/Crystal Lady Kyndra Chastain as Saskia Messer/Daggermoth Becky “Bex” Smith as Herself/Narrator Damon Noyes as Gary Steward/Whambat, Mimo, and the Nachfalter Additional music: “Dramatic Tense Cinematic Music” by Argsound Background Music “The X-Files Theme (Cover)” by Neon Frontier “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo “Call My Name (And I'll be There)” by Jennifer Cihi “Sailor Moon Theme Song” by Nicole & Brynne Price “Shredder (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV) - The Shredder” by Sixto Sounds “She's Got the Power” by Stan Bush “A weird thing” by Chiro Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ and AmeAngelofSin. To tide you over while I finish production on episode 74, I'm re-sharing this Kaiju Weekly classic! You'll get to hear me and Travis Alexander discuss a deathly serious horror movie that features DeForrest Kelly fighting giant killer rabbits! This was originally published in spring 2020. The audio quality is a bit inconsistent because we recorded on Discord. Original show notes: “This week Travis is joined by fantastic podcast host Nathan from the Monster Island Film Vault podcast. He traveled all the way from Monster Island to discuss giant killer rabbits... that is not a joke. Meanwhile Michael visits Monster Island for what seems to be a challenging vacation.” We'd like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander; Michael Hamilton; Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, Eric Anderson of Nerd Chapel, Ted Williams, Wynja the Ninja, Brad “Batman” Eddleman, Christopher Riner, and The Indiscrite One! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! While production continues on the last quarter of MIFV season three, I'm sharing this excerpt from the latest MIFV MAX livestream, on which the subject was the finally-released Shin Ultraman. In this portion, we interview the producer of the Ultraman Connection website, Jeff Gomez, who shares why tokusatsu—and especially Ultraman—is important to him. We then move to the work he did to get Shin Ultraman released through Fathom Events, including who was commissioned to make its surprisingly good dub. You're getting inside info no other podcast has! If you'd like to hear the uncut version of the livestream where Danny, Damon, Michael, and Nathan discuss the film and their viewing experiences, join MIFV MAX on Patreon for as little as $3 a month! Merry Christmas, Kaiju Lovers! And yes, you read that right! Nathan is covering a holiday “monster movie”—because his real sister said so! Yes, Sarah Marchand joins him as a guest host to discuss one of the movies that they've, ironically, bonded over: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey. While it stretches the purview of the podcast thinly, Nathan does justify it with some weak connections (like Rick Baker making the Grinch costume and makeup). While Sarah is quite nostalgic for this movie, having seen it when she was about the same age as Cindy Lou Who, it's a guilty pleasure for Nathan because he has issues with it as an adaptation of a classic Dr. Seuss book and the original 1966 animated TV special. Expect to hear almost the entire film—or at least Jim Carrey's lines—quoted throughout! But Nathan and Sarah do agree that, despite this movie's faults, it's better than the stupid new horror parody, The Mean One. (This episode was largely recorded and written before the tragic news of Jason David Frank's death). Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what you could call the perfect crossover between their podcasts, MIFV MAX members Drew and Jacob of The Cel Cast sponsor a discussion of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie. It has animated kaiju in it—they're just bad CGI robots. But the real star of this film, like other pop culture blockbusters in 1995, was the villain Ivan Ooze (played by Paul Freeman), who steals every scene and eats all the scenery. If you've heard Nate discuss this on one of his other podcasts, The Power Trip, this will be an expansion on what he said there, particularly on the subject of the hero's journey. Too bad for Nate and his co-hosts, their discussion is interrupted by a certain snarky bonehead. The night before the broadcast, Nate journals about getting voicemails from Karone—an actual Power Ranger—and Raymund—who keeps claiming he was a Ranger. After the broadcast, Nate goes to a special “thank you for your service” meet-and-greet being held in honor of the recently retired Tommy Oliver. But an old foe of Tommy's crashes the party. This episode is dedicated in loving memory to Jason David Frank. The prologue and epilogue, “Return of the Green Rangers,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. “Rito Calls” written by Nathan Marchand. Guest Cast Celeste Mora as Karone Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward Joey Sourlis as Tommy Oliver Shane Cochran as Ivan Ooze Daniel DiManna as Ninjor Additional music: “Go Go Power Rangers” by The Power Rangers Orchestra “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo “Ivan Ooze” by Graeme Revell “Go Green Ranger Go (Instrumental Redux)” by Ron Wasserman “Susume! As a warm-up to MIFV season 4—“The Monster Island World Tour”—Nathan and his friends Michael Hamilton and Daniel DiManna discuss Netflix's new Norwegian kaiju movie, Troll. All these questions and more are discussed and answered by Nathan and two trolls he calls “friends”! On November 28, 2022, a multitude of podcasters and YouTubers—Nathan Marchand, Michael Hamilton, Travis Alexander, Jack “GMan” Hudgens (The Drift Space), J.R. Villers (The Drift Space), Rebecca Hudgens (The Drift Space), Kaiju Kim, Chris Cooke, and Jimmy from Zeo 2 Hero—came together to celebrate the life and work of Jason David Frank. From acting to martial arts to teaching to motivational speaking, he did it all. But he'll always be remembered as Tommy Oliver, the most popular Power Ranger. He was the face of the brand for years and a hero to his fans. Because he took his own life, your hosts spent this long livestream raising money for To Write Love On Her Arms, “a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery.” Their goal is to raise $800, and you can still contribute at the link below. Hello, kaiju lovers! Today on “Ameri-kaiju,” we get artsy with the indie film Colossal, starring Anne Hathaway. Robert and Courtney from the Record All Monsters podcast stop by to have a thoughtful discussion on this unique kaiju film where the monsters are psychic projections of the main characters. While it's a comedy, it touches on some heavy subjects, like alcoholism and narcissism. All three hosts share personal stories connected to those subjects. While some commentators have said that the film is about domestic abuse, Nate disagrees. So instead, today's Toku Topic is on the psychology of inner demons because every character in Colossal is wrestling with one. Beforehand, Cameron Winter pays Nate a visit in Nate's prestigious media master office. Winter asks Nate if he knows anything about Jessica helping to free the Ymir—and to maintain his cover, Nate reluctantly says she conspired to do so. Afterward, Nate and Jet Jaguar go to the Heat Seeker and meet H.E.A.T.'s techie, Randy, who sends the robot N.I.G.E.L. to spy on Winter's operations on the Beta Site. There they make a surprise discovery that's more than they bargained for, and now Jet must save them. The prologue and epilogue, “Trespassing,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest cast: Jack Hudgens as Cameron Winter Andres Perez as Randy Hernandez Daniel DiManna as N.I.G.E.L. Happy Halloween, Kaiju Lovers! As a special treat from all of us on Monster Island, here's an episode from one of our newest radio shows, Kenny Kappa's Kaiju Krypt. That mischievously insane yokai presents the scariest kaiju-related short stories using equally weird readers. In this episode, Monster Island's resident mad scientist, the one and only Dr. Dante Dourif, reads a classic piece of monster literature that means a lot to him: “The Voice in the Night” by William Hope Hodgson, which was the loose inspiration for Ishiro Honda's 1963 classic, Matango. Make sure to tighten your belts because you're about to get your pants scared off! Listen to the MIFV episode on Matango. Script by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In a fun little “sequel” to MIFV's glorious Pacific Rim episode, Nate is joined by the co-host of The Drift Space podcast, Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss a sequel Nate has hated since seeing it in a theater: Pacific Rim: Uprising. Nate didn't want to have an episode on this film, but when he saw an opportunity for a Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode, he decided to bring Jack, a stalwart defender of the film, to convince him it has merit. And he makes a valiant effort, going so far as to compare it to Jun Fukuda's Godzilla films! Does Jack succeed at changing Nate's mind? Listen to find out! Hello, kaiju lovers! Godzilla Redux is in full gear with one of Big G's most quintessential films—and Jimmy From NASA's personal favorite, because reasons—Invasion of Astro-Monster (aka Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero). For this occasion, Nate is joined the Dapper Man himself, Kevin Joshua Burnham, who is a YouTuber, the co-host of The Bottom Shelf podcast, and a longtime fan of MIFV. Everyone's favorite angry Irishman dives deep into this film with Nate, discussing its making, its cast, and how it showcases the Japanese's very different sensibilities when it comes to alien invasion stories. Spoiler warning: the Xiliens aren't anti-American symbols. Before the broadcast, Jimmy tells Nate he has something he needs to show in his garage after the show. Afterward, Jimmy shows him the “museum piece” Cameron Winter bribed gifted him with: a Xilien saucer. But the big secret is what—or rather, who—is inside. Check out Kevin's YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheDapperMan) and The Bottom Shelf (https://geekdevotions.com/category/the-bottom-shelf/). Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate has been waiting for this Ameri-kaiju episode for a long time—he gets to discuss one of his favorite films: Pacific Rim! He's joined by the three co-hosts of The Drift Space podcast—returning guests Jack “GMan” Hudgens and J.R. Viller, plus Jack's sister, Rebecca—to gush about how much they love it. Guillermo del Toro's masterful tribute to both tokusatsu and anime is a movie that is unabashedly itself with its archetypal but strong characters, incredible worldbuilding, and mind-blowing special effects. But beneath the beyond-cool chassis beats the heart of a grossly underestimated story of surprising depth. If you don't already love Pacific Rim, Nate and the Drifters will change your mind! Beforehand, Nate discovers data files for an abandoned ad campaign for an unknown kaiju named “Chimera.” After the broadcast, as you undoubtedly heard, a mysterious kaiju attacked the Island but was killed by the Drifters in their Jaeger, Bouncing Betty. Nate's live broadcast of that battle is included here. The prologue and epilogue, “Chimera,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Additional music: “Cradle of the Chozo” by prophetic music “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo “Feel Sound – Cinematic Adventure” | Music promoted by MAGIC SOUND® Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ. Hello, kaiju lovers! Over the weekend, Nathan made a day trip up South Bend, Indiana, to attend Ramen-Con—which is about anime, not cooking…most of the time. The theme this year was kaiju, so he had to go. He gave a panel presentation called “Kaiju 101,” which was a crash course in the basics of giant monsters. That's what most of the audio is in this bonus recording is from. Before that, Nate talks about the rest of his experiences at the con—including representing Moby Dick against Rhinoblaster in Kaiju Court! Hello, kaiju lovers! This is the audio from a special livestream Nate held to celebrate three years of podcasting on Monster Island. So, of course, his guest co-host had to be his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA. And also, of course, their topic had to be 1977's The War in Space (aka “The Jimmy From NASA Story”). Unfortunately, while Jimmy's mic worked (he doesn't sound like a droid!), his camera didn't. Oh, well. Amidst an info dump on Toho's attempt at Star Wars, Nate and Jimmy play an MIFV trivia game to give away fabulous prizes to fans in the chat—including one where they give their best “how did Jimmy survive the War in Space?” theories. Also, Jimmy faces his PTSD demons. It was…emotional, to say the least. Watch the full video on the MIFV YouTube channel. Welcome, kaiju lovers, heroes of the internet, and listeners with attitude! This past weekend, Nathan and his Power Trip co-host, Michael Hamilton, met each other in real life for the first time (and the world somehow didn't explode). They attended a small upstart “spin-off” convention called Days of the Dead: All Monsters Attack, which was held in Indianapolis. This bonus episode is a late-night postmortem chat they had afterward, and it's being shared on the feeds for Monster Island Film Vault, Henshin Men, and The Power Trip because the guest line-up was relevant to all three shows! Hear about them meeting Gamera's best girl, Ayako Fujitani, Bin Furuya, the original Ultraman suit actor, and the OG Red Power Ranger himself, Austin St. John. Another week without an MIFV episode, I know. There are several recorded and in post-production, which has taken longer than I expected. Regardless, to tide you over once again, here's an abridged version of a Kaiju Weekly episode I, Nathan, was on a few months ago. I discussed season two of Netflix's anime, Pacific Rim: The Black. I've been intending to share, anyway, and given that the next main episode is on the original film, I figured now was a good time to share it. Here's the original description: “This week, Michael and guest Nate Marchand discuss Season 2 of Netflix's, Pacific Rim The Black.” Here's where you can listen to the full episode: Kaiju Ramen Website: https://kaijuramenmedia.com/kaijuweekly Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/yjr8dkry Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/28z47r2j We'd like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander; Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, Eric Anderson of Nerd Chapel, Ted Williams, and Wynja the Ninja! Hello, kaiju lovers! I'm hard at work catching up on my editing/writing of the next few MIFV episodes, but in the meantime, I thought I'd share something in the podcast feed that'd normally be on MIFV MAX on Patreon. Any and all bloopers are saved and shared with Patrons (starting at the $10/month level), but since I had to cut some great discussions on Faustian deals from episode 67 (Little Shop of Horrors, 1986), I thought I'd publish it publicly so non-Patrons could taste a bit of what they can get for their support. Enjoy hearing me banter and flub with Michael Hamilton, Daniel DiManna, and Damon Noyes! Hello, kaiju lovers! Today them Jaconetti boys, Luke and Jason, join Nate for the latest entry in “Godzilla Redux”: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. This was Toho's third kaiju film in the momentous year of 1964 and their second Godzilla film that year. As Luke puts it, it's The Avengers (2012) of Toho kaiju, where several monsters who debuted in solo films come together to face a common alien enemy. It's a momentous turning point for the franchise: Godzilla and Rodan have their “face turns,” and it's the first appearance of Godzilla's archnemesis, the three-headed golden space dragon himself, King Ghidorah. Get ready for a lively, nostalgic discussion riddled with pro-wrestling references! Before the broadcast, Nate is met by Jessica at his new mega-office. During their argument (what'd you expect?), Gary comes in along with a beautiful mystery woman, whom Jessica immediately hates. Later, Nate returns to his office where he argues with Jessica again, only for Gary to come begging for help—just as the mystery woman reveals herself to be a Bug Lady from the Church of Mothrianity! Check out all of Luke and Jason's podcast at Two True Freaks: https://twotruefreaks.com/podcast/. The prologue and epilogue, “Jessica has a Romantic Rival! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” jumps ahead 50 years, but as you'll hear, the (in)famous Cloverfield has a lot in common with the classic 1950s films we've been covering. Nate's longtime friend Nick Hayden drops by to discuss this movie because he's loved it ever since he first experienced it in a theater—and it is an experience. Too much of one for some people, in fact! While it's popular to hate on Cloverfield in the kaiju fandom, it popularized the “found footage” genre and launched J.J. Abrams' studio, Bad Robot Productions. To the shock of some of Nate's friends, he says this is the closest the United States has come to producing a Godzilla (1954). How and why? The Toku Topic helps explain that: the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Before this, Nate meets with Dr. Nick Tatopoulos on the Heat Seeker to discuss recent events. Nate learns Cameron Winter is covering his tracks, so Nate tells Nick he's thinking of taking Mr. Gold's promotion so he can spy on Winter. Afterward, Nate goes to Mr. Gold's office to discuss the offer—only to be interrogated about Jessica's shenanigans with the Ymir's escape on Harryhausen's birthday. Check out Nick's website (http://worksofnick.com/) and his podcast, Derailed Trains of Thought (http://derailedtrainsofthought.com/). The prologue and epilogue, “Claws and Cash,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest stars: R. Episode 68 is unfortunately delayed until next week, but I didn't want to leave you without “new” content, Kaiju Lovers! Given that this weekend is G-Fest XXVII, the oldest and arguably biggest kaiju convention in North America, it was appropriate that I share the audio from the latest “Chill with Kaiju Kim” livestream. I was one of several guests who discussed the con. You'll hear me promote the five panels I'll be on, among other things. If you're on your way to the convention, this is great listening! Enjoy! Original YouTube description: “Kaiju Kim is joined by Omni Viewer, Thomas Nicol, Nathan Marchand, and Danny DiManna to discuss what's going down at G-FEST XXVII (July 15-17 2022)!” Watch the original video version on Kaiju Kim's YouTube channel. Hello, kaiju lovers! In this bonus “Ameri-kaiju” episode, Travis Alexander of Kaiju Weekly and Henshin Men finally gets to see the goo—and he's not happy! That's mostly because he's an animal lover and the Blob eats a kitten in the almost-forgotten and incredibly weird 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob (aka Son of Blob). It's the most bipolar movie Nate has ever seen for the show, and Travis, a lover of movies both weird and bad, found it borderline incomprehensible. Half of it is disjointed improvisational comedy, and the other half is a scary but inferior rehashing of the original 1958 classic. Strap for a discussion of more 30-year-old “teens,” a “hair sculptor,” and a Naked Turk! Additional music: “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Beware! The Blob Theme” by Mort Garson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo Check out Nathan's (and Travis's) spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. Release the crossover! Nate and his friend Elijah “The Littlest Gatekeeper” Thomas start a new annual tradition for their podcasts, The Monster Island Film Vault and Kaiju Conversation, respectively, by discussing a Ray Harryhausen film every year. Why? Because they both share a birthday with the special effects legend. Also, since these two are weird, they're going in reverse filmography order, starting with the original Clash of the Titans. This epic adventure was a relic when it came out, but given Harryhausen's romantic love of the past and love of the classics, it's not surprising. Your hosts dive deep into this film's production—Arnold Schwarzenegger was nearly the lead?!—and discuss the many incredible mythological creatures that appear in it. As Harryhausen's best friend, the author Ray Bradbury, said, Medusa in this film is Harryhausen's “crowning glory.” Just forgive Elijah for being a bit snobby about it. Happy birthday, Ray! Hello, kaiju lovers! Thanks to Damon Noyes's generous MIFV MAX pledge on Patreon, MIFV is covering its first musical: Little Shop of Horrors (1986)! Nate wanted to cover this as part of Amer-kaiju, but to his disappointment, it didn't make the cut. That's when Damon, who's performed in not one but two stage productions of this, swooped in and got it on the roster. It has a puppet, after all. This story has a complicated history: from several short stories to a low-budget Roger Corman movie in 1960 to a 1982 off-off-Broadway musical to this film, Nate and Damon dive into all of it. You'll hear discussion of Faustian bargains, debates over its two endings, some singing, and even a candid moment where Damon gets emotional about a song in the film. Before the broadcast, Nate was checking his e-mail in the KIJU breakroom when Mr. Gold arrives and says Cameron Winter wants to promote him to “media master.” Nate is reluctant, but he wonders if he can use this to discover what the new boss is hiding. Also, Dr. Douif calls as the Island's kaiju horticulturalist to offer his thoughts on Audrey II. Check out the movies Damon was in! Maxie, directed by Jarrett Bryant, is on the streaming site Vimeo. Hello, kaiju lovers! Today's episode is AS BIG AS A BATTLESHIP! Damon Noyes visits the Island (after yet another harrowing experience) for “Ameri-kaiju” to discuss 1957's The Giant Claw. This infamous movie stars the ugliest antimatter-powered space bird you've ever seen! “Crazy Bernice,” as she's known on the Island, looks more like Beaky Buzzard than Rodan, despite her movie being similar to the latter's. Nate and Damon spend a surprising amount of time on this wacky movie, poking fun at the Claw marionette, theorizing over the bird's origins, discussing borderline creepy 1950s flirting, and the movie's unofficial sequel novels! You might be wondering, “What could Marchand possibly research as a Toku Topic for The Giant Claw?” Antimatter. What else? After the broadcast, Nate and Damon break in to commentate on Crazy Bernice escaping from the Beta Site and attacking H.E.A.T.—but thankfully, Zilla is around! Check out the movies Damon was in! Hello, kaiju lovers! Today's episode is a momentous one. Nate discusses the all-time classic Mothra vs. Godzilla with Daniel DiManna of the Godzilla Novelization Project. Now Nate has come full circle because this was the first film whose episode he recorded first in his previous podcast life. But this episode is better! How could it not be with the living kaiju encyclopedia as a guest? Nate and Danny discuss everything: the Godzilla suit, the Mothra puppet, the script, the characters, and of course, the late great Akira Takarada. This G-film doesn't do anything new, but what it does, it does to near-perfection. No wonder it's considered one of the best of the franchise! Afterward, Nate and Danny are joined by Nate's pseudo-sister, Jessica, to livestream the sendoff of Mothra's newly-laid egg back to Infant Island. Unfortunately, the Church of Mothrianity strikes again! The web-splitting Silkworm attacks, and even Jessica's magical girl persona, Crystal Lady, can't stop her—until she gets help from a new companion. The epilogue, “The Coming of Mimo! Crystal Lady vs. Silkworm!” was written by Nathan Marchand. Special thanks to J.P. Gant for helping to edit this episode! Follow him on Twitter: @Homebrewed_SD (https://tinyurl.com/2jpc36r5). Hello, kaiju lovers! MIFV's season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, wouldn't be complete without some Ray Harryhausen, so Nate invited both of his “co-hosts in kamen” (ba-dum-tsh!) to discuss 20 Million Miles to Earth. (Yes, Jimmy reminds Nate that he got his chronology wrong, because this film was released in 1957 and The Blob was 1958. Oops!). Harryhausen super-fans Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton, co-hosts of the Kaiju Weekly podcast, join Nate in a chat that veers perilously close to derailing at multiple points. Jet lag will do that to you, especially when flying to the Island in the Rad Bug. Regardless, 20 Million Miles was Harryhausen's first truly iconic film, paving the way for his fantasy epics that followed. The intrepid Jimmy From NASA keeps trying to tell his story about seeing a herd of Ymir on their native Venus, but nobody cares. The Toku Topic is the Soviet side of the Space Race since this film begins with a rocket ship crash and was released several months before the launch of Sputnik I. Be prepared for many (bad) Russian accents! To compete with this broadcast, Cameron Winter did a livestream where he sent one of his Cyber-Flies to track down the Ymir so he could be put on display for the film's anniversary and Harryhausen's birthday in June. Winter rambles about seemingly random things while doing so. Special thanks to J.P. Gant for helping to edit this episode! Follow him on Twitter: @Homebrewed_SD (https://tinyurl.com/2jpc36r5). Hello, kaiju lovers! Godzilla Redux continues! Nate is joined by YouTuber/author/musician/Navy sailor Alyssa Charpentier (aka AlyssaGojiGeek) for a film from his previous podcast life: King Kong vs. Godzilla. While, yes, Nate discussed a pair of related unmade films with John LeMay, today he and Alyssa compare and contrast the original Japanese version and the re-edited U.S. cut. The latter softens the satirical tone of the original and adds pointless scenes with two boring white guys who use a children's dinosaur book to prove Godzilla is a dumb brute and Kong “is a thinking animal.” This leads to some talk about the subpar Criterion Collection box set—the only way to legally watch the Japanese cut in America—and how the Japanese economic miracle influenced the film. Even Alyssa never learned this stuff in school! Before the broadcast, Nate meets with Mr. Gold and his assistant, Ms. Kawaii. They try to sweet talk him with the gift of hot chocolate and promises of advancement. Nate feigns gratitude and endures accusations of brown-nosing from Jimmy. Afterward, Nate researches late into the night at the Sekizawa Library, where he tries—and fails—to accost the AWOL EDF Mutant Ozaki. Ozaki tells Nate about the shady operations he's been investigating the last few weeks. The prologue, “Secret Business, Part 1” was written by Michael Hamilton and Nathan Marchand. The epilogue, “Secret Business, Part 2,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Hello, kaiju lovers! Our season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, “creeps and leaps and slides and glides” along when MIFV MAX member Eric Anderson joins Nate to discuss 1958's The Blob. This was Steve McQueen's debut as a 30-year-old teenager dating the future TV wife of Andy Griffith. This classic of 1950s sci-fi cinema was an independent film produced by a studio known for making religious and educational films, which makes it doubly appropriate that the founder of Nerd Chapel (who's also a substitute teacher) is on today's episode. Being an influential indie film is also probably why, believe it or not. it's in the Criterion Collection. The Toku Topic is a phenomenon related to the true story that inspired this kooky film: star jelly. Check out all things Nerd Chapel here: http://nerdchapel.com/. The “See the Goo” promo was written by The Monster Island Board of Directors. The epilogue, “Ozaki's Message,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Additional music: “The Blob” by The Five Blobs “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo “Numbness & Knives” by HoboKa Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ.
