EverestLabs.AI is a startup that focuses on the sorting facilities within recycling. They use a camera, a 3D camera, and robotics to sort valuable recyclable commodities. The AI model can detect hundreds of objects within a frame very accurately, which is a hard technical problem to solve. They are deployed in several facilities and are growing rapidly. On this episode, we'll talk about:Does the robotics have the capability of even doing a better job than humans sitting there going through it?Does having these robotics sort out the materials at the end, boost the MRF's profitability, or is it a break even point? What are the materials that the robots are optimized to collect the most of, and which ones are they unable to capture?Does it ever get tricked? With materials like glass and aluminum, are there different ways that those are collected at MRF's currently? And can robots be used to improve that collection rate or not?How did they settle on the type of robot that they picked?Do they see that there's a lot of room for the robotics to continue to improve to make their robotics process that much more effective, or is it pretty good right now? When Apurba first started getting into the recycling industry, what surprised him the most? What does he put in the recycling bin as someone who has a solid understanding of what is genuinely recycled? Are we still in the early adopter stage for MRFs using robots, or have we passed that point? Is it approaching mass adoption?Of all the things Apurba could be focusing on, why did he pick this?Apurba Pradhan has over 18 years of experience in the technology industry. He began his career as a Product Design Engineer at JDS Uniphase in 2002 and moved to Luxim Corporation in 2006 as Director of Product Marketing. In 2012, he joined Waterstone Management Group as a Management Consultant. In 2013, he became Vice President of Strategy, Marketing and Partnerships at LUMA Lighting Group. In 2016, he moved to Echelon as Head of Product Management and Senior Director. In 2019, he joined Adesto Technologies as Vice President of Products and Marketing. In 2021, he became Head of Business Unit and General Manager at Renesas Electronics, and in 2022, he joined EnOcean and EverestLabs.AI as SVP Strategy and Head of Product respectively. For more information and to explore other episodes, go to www.ppcpackaging.com/the-packaging-brothersFollow PPCPackaging on social media! :arrow_down:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/pacific-packaging-components-inc-/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PPCPackaging/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ppcpackaging/?hl=enWebsite: http://www.ppcpackaging.com/Find out more about Apurba and connect with him on LinkedIn.LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/apurba-pradhan-a5962114Website: https://www.everestlabs.ai/The views and opinions expressed on the "Packaging Brothers" podcast are solely those of the author and guests and should not be attributed to any other individual or entity. Numnuts® – The benefits of pain relief for Lamb Marking.

This week on the podcast we have Robin Smith of Numnuts. Numnuts is a device that simultaneously  castrates or tails a lamb whilst also administering pain relief.Mark chats with Robin, a Product Design Engineer and creator of Numnuts, but is originally from a family of sheep vets. "You end up back in the flock as you get older" The Numnuts story began when Robins father developed a vaccine for barbers pole. Robins company, 4C design, developed the machine that produced the vaccine. That bought Robin over to Australia, where he had a chance meeting with Meat and Livestock Australia. Here he came across the need for a pain relief administering device during lamb marking. Research had suggested that local anaesthetics were the best option to provide relief during the castration and tailing process but there wasn't a way to make that process repeatable, reliable and accessible to farmers. And so, Numnuts was born. Robin says the interesting thing about this challenge, was that the drug, the anaesthetic, was already readily available but the method of administrating it in a time-effective method wasn't. The initial concept was born 12 years ago and the device has gone through many different stages. The first prototype involved a form of a lasso and a chainsaw priming bulb. Numnuts was an international collaboration between welfare scientists at CSRIO and Moredun in combination with product design engineers 4c Design.Numnuts has been refined over the years to castrate and  give local anaesthetic to the exact correct point, down to a millimeter, meaning the most effective pain relief possible. You can watch it in use here.Launched officially in 2019, what Robin explains wasn't ideal timing. "I've experienced drought, plague and a global pandemic, so it's not been the best three or four years to launch a product in the welfare space". There's currently around 1,500 farms across the world using the Numnuts device which is "not bad going".Robin hopes there will be more wool and meat schemes that reward the producer for higher welfare practices in the future, meaning more uptake of Numnuts.Numnuts is the best solution to the problem. Robin says their market driver is first and formost welfare, secondly increasing production for the farmer via the high welfare wool schemes, but there is also a driver in the form of increased survivability in the paddock post tailing and castrating. As always with anything neXtgen Agri, Mark briefly touched on genetics. Robin discusses "high/low responders" when it comes to pain. There is a gene related to pain response so in the future, could we select animals that are resilient to the necessary procedures? How I Got Here

Episode #5: Zach Scott, Product Design Engineer at Apple. Since he was in college, Zach Scott always dreamed of working for Apple - but it took a winding path over many years to finally end up there. As a mechanical engineer, Zach interned for SpaceX as a student, before joining a small startup after school, where he experienced the rapid, “wear-many-hats” environment of an early stage company. He used that experience to springboard into a role at Formlabs designing 3D printers, which ultimately led to his current job designing iPhones at Apple, after having been rejected from the company twice previously. Zach's healthy attitude towards putting himself out there and quickly moving on from rejection has been a strength for his ability to learn, grow, and find new opportunities. This conversation is brought to you by The Garage at Northwestern University. Show Notes

There he started playing, learning and experimenting with DIY robots. At that time DIY robots were only accessible to professionals, and not well known to the general public. After coming up short with finding an easy to make robot for all ages, he realized what he needed to do. Bring to the market an open source robot that anyone can make. He bought a 3D printer and in a couple of months the iconic shape of Otto was made functional.Since then thousands of people started using Otto all around the world due to it’s simple Do-it-yourself home assembly attributes. Otto DIY is headquartered in Czech Republic, the center of Europe where the term robot and the best open source 3D printer was created. Thanks to Otto DIY open source nature, it has become one of the most popular 3D printable robot designs in the world. In this episode, we are in conversation with designer and technologist Jude Pullen. Winner of the 2020 Alastair Graham-Bryce "Imagineering" Award (Institution of Mechanical Engineers), Jude is a Product Design Engineer with an unparalleled appetite to investigate each subject matter that crosses his path. With a passion for bridging seemingly disparate disciplines, he is fascinated by fresh design challenges, be they human, mechanical or virtual. Exceptionally skilled at creating physical prototypes, he uses these models to explore design ideas, be they concepts for Dyson, a medical device for NHS, a fire-fighting robot or a mini space-pod.  Jude has worked with Speck Design, Dyson, Sugru and LEGO but is possibly best known to design and technology teachers for his appearance as part of the design team on the BBCs Big Life Fix which has become something of an iconic show for design and technology teachers nationally (currently being repeated). Jude recently delivered a keynote as part of the Design and Technology Association's Autumn School. In the conversations leading to this keynote entitled "Not a Ted Talk", he was keen to avoid the 'easy option' of delivering a speech detailing his rich career to date. He was instead eager to explore the nature of design and technology teaching and what the future might hold for the subject. Teachers attending the Autumn School session were challenged to step forward to help form a group raising a hand to explore what might be possible in school with the support of Jude and some of his professional network of colleagues. That invitation is extended to D&T teachers listening to this podcast. This episode has something for teachers, students of D&T and for parents alike. So sit back, plug in and enjoy the D&T Association in conversation with Jude Pullen.
