What started out as a 10 watt station that only aired at night and on weekends became a legendary Baltimore radio station, Baltimore's home of heavy metal. They were the first to play bands such as Metallica and Guns and Roses, and were very supportive of the local music scene, giving local bands an opportunity to get their material played, get interviewed, and have their shows announced on the air. They sponsored countless concerts and events over the years and in 1987 released the 97 Underground album "The Beast from the East Vol 1" which featured all Maryland based bands.
