Niki Svara on Self-Forgiveness was originally released on June 18, 2022 “To heal, you have to get to the root of the wound and kiss it all the way up” ~ Rupi Kaur Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. My name is Cindy MacMillan. Do you ever feel like you are waiting on a permission slip to live the life you want? If you answered yes, then you are in the right spot. Each week I interview coaches and spiritual explorers, from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between; and let's don't forget about those moments that we never saw coming. Self-love well-being and mindset are at the heart of our conversations. Because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. In this episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, we are chatting about self-forgiveness and why it's so hard to forgive ourselves. And my guest is Niki Svara. With a master's degree in spiritual psychology, and over 15 years of experience working with clients, Niki Svara has the love, the listening, and the tools that enable people to create deep and powerful growth, greater self-expression, and personal healing in their lives. Niki is the founder of Love The Way You Look and the author of Piece Talks: Messages of Love from your Body and Soul. Welcome to the show, Niki. Thank you for being here. I believe it was Brendon Burchard who said, “No matter how small you start, start something that matters.” And this series, “Self-care is more than a buzzword. It's personal.” is what I am doing - because self-care matters. Throughout our conversation today we will be weaving in self-care tips. 2:23 I love the word explore; it's such a fun word. And it really it just it lifts my spirit. And so, to me, exploring the seasons of life means to get curious about them, to have a curiosity. And I'm going to say let go of resistance of those seasons. And I can tell you from my own personal experience that for a good majority of my early life, I resisted my seasons, I constantly wanted to be somewhere other than where I was, and it really wasn't a joyous and fulfilling experience. 6:25 I believe we're all in need of self-forgiveness. Because whether we realize it or not, there's always something that we're judging ourselves for. Could be something we said or didn't say, could be something we did or didn't do. We're not happy. And we're judging ourselves for where we are in life for whatever particular season, we are in. 7:50 I think, number one, is the idea of becoming willing, becoming willing to forgive ourselves, we have to have that piece because if we're not, it's just not going to work. And there are several different ways to become willing. 10:54 I wanted to add one thing, because self-forgiveness is not something I think that we think about. I know, it's not for me, so I must set reminders. I set little reminders so that I can make it a consistent practice. 14:04 Practice helps us to remember the truth of who we really are; the truth of our being. And it's like I can be put in two awareness's at one time - I'm aware of my human self and I'm aware of my spiritual self, and it's really just a fulfilling and peaceful experience. 19:32 And this was the aha moment that I came to, in an inner exploration, that love and loving somebody is not the same as being and feeling emotionally close to that person. 23:15 Or we can take a step back, pause, and really begin to choose that gentleness toward ourselves and that self-love and self-compassion. Thank you for joining me on Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! I'm Cindy MacMillan, and it's an absolute joy to share this adventure with you. I have something truly special to share today: picture a magical winter wonderland where enchanting Christmas markets come to life!

Tad viņam kaut kas mainījās, viņš to nometa, tad saka - man neviena diēta nepalīdz. (..) Kam vajadzētu būt valsts apmaksātai programmai, kas mums diemžēl nav, mums tikai bērni saņem."

Halakhah is for Orthodox Jews. It means Jewish law: what you can do and can't do. Right? Not according to Laynie Soloman, a passionate teacher of Jewish text and thought at SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yehshiva. Soloman says that Halakhah isn't law, per se, since law – especially when it comes to queer and trans folks – can serve as an instrument of oppression. Rather, Soloman speaks of Halakhah as “Jewish practice and its surrounding discourse,” i.e. what Jews do. Soloman discusses SVARA's Trans Halakhah Project, which seeks to empower trans Jews. Soloman talks with hosts Bryan Schwartzman about what the project means in a political climate hostile to trans people. “Celebrating our transness is a political act.” Recorded early in the Israel-Hamas War, Soloman describes how they have turned to ancient rabbinic sources to understand how Jews have dealt with catastrophe and violence in the past. Earlier this year, the Trans Halakha Project—an initiative of SVARA, a queer and trans yeshiva—published a series of teshuvot, or answers to questions about halakha (Jewish religious law). These pieces speak to questions of Jewish life and practice for trans people, from who is obligated to undergo circumcision or to follow the prescriptions around menstruation, to whether it's permissible to wear a chest binder when immersing in the mikveh (a ritual bath that traditionally requires nudity). While there have been some previous efforts to apply halakha to specific questions of trans life, almost none of this work has been produced by trans people themselves until now. On this week's episode of On the Nose, managing editor Nathan Goldman speaks with three members of the yeshiva's Teshuva-Writing Collective: Laynie Soloman, Alyx Bernstein, and Rabbi Xava de Cordova. They discuss why the collective took up these particular questions, how they understand the nature of religious authority in Judaism, and what it means to reimagine halakha for trans flourishing. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Texts, Events, and Further Reading:Trans Halakha ProjectThe Teshuva-Writing Collective's teshuvotBeit Yosef by Rabbi Joseph Karo The Talmud“An Unrecognizable Jewish Future: A Queer Talmudic Take,” Rabbi Benay Lappe, ELI Talks“Euphoric Halakhah,” Laynie Soloman, EvolveShulchan Aruch by Rabbi Joseph Karo“Are Trans Women Obligated in Niddah? Chevruta is a column named for the traditional method of Jewish study, in which a pair of students analyzes a religious text together. In each installment, Jewish Currents will match leftist thinkers and organizers with a rabbi or Torah scholar. The activists will bring an urgent question that arises in their own work; the Torah scholar will lead them in exploring their question through Jewish text. By routing contemporary political questions through traditional religious sources, we aim to address the most urgent ethical and spiritual problems confronting the left. Each column will be accompanied by a podcast and a study guide (linked below). In our second Chevruta podcast, Laynie Soloman, associate rosh yeshiva of the queer and trans yeshiva SVARA, speaks with feminist theorist Sophie Lewis, author of Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family and Abolish the Family: A Manifesto for Care and Liberation, about the famous biblical injunction to “be fruitful and multiply.” Though this has traditionally been regarded as a foundational commandment, the rabbis were strikingly ambivalent about it—in part because of their profound love of Torah, and of each other. In this Chevruta, Soloman and Lewis explore a Talmudic text from tractate Yevamot that confronts a rabbinic figure who has declined to have children. Through his example, the rabbis normalize a discomfort with this seemingly essential practice of biological reproduction, and offer a way to complicate—and potentially subvert—the status of procreation in the rabbinic mind and in our world. You can find the column based on this conversation and a study guide here. Length: 47 minutesSynopsis: This morning (6/2/23), in our Friday morning Q&A, we took up five questions: (1) How should a person relate to teshuvah on aveiros one no longer does? (2) What is the Torah's stance on speaking about a person in an embarrassing way in the context of tochachah, considering how the pesukim openly talk about the faults of individuals? (3) What is svara? (4) What are the parameters of giving "drush" on halachic topics? Innan við tvær vikur eru í það að Besta deild karla rúlli af stað og upphitun okkar er komin á fullt. Fylki er spáð ellefta sæti deildarinnar. Fylkismenn eru í æfingaferð og því var tekið á það ráð að fá stuðningsmann í sett til þess að ræða um Fylkisliðið. Kristján Gylfi Guðmundsson, yngri flokka þjálfari og stuðningsmaður, mætti á skrifstofu Fótbolta.net og fór yfir málin. Þá var hringt í Ragnar Braga Sveinsson og staðan tekin á liðinu í æfingaferðinni. Óhætt er að segja að fyrirliði þeirra Fylkismanna sé vel stemmdur fyrir tímabilinu. Fylki er spáð falli og er aðalmarkmiðið hjá liðinu í sumar auðvitað að halda sér uppi; þeir ætla að svara fyrir það hvernig fór síðast þegar liðið var í deild þeirra bestu.
Við kölluðum eftir spurningum úr sal og fengum þær. Hér eru svörin!

In episode 53 Noam and Sheva talk with Rabbi Deborah Newborn who has created the innovative Divorce and Discovery retreat. It's a weekend long experience for Jews and Jew-adjacent folks to process and find meaning in their divorce and separation. Along with her personal journey through divorce, we discuss the need for Jewish community-based divorce programming for families and individuals. We also talk about how Rosh Hashanah can be a great time to explore ones divorce journey and use the rituals involved to find meaning, grow, and move on from this major transition. Deborah Newbrun's career as a Jewish leader (particularly in Jewish environmental education) spans more than 35 years including 24 years as Director of Camp Tawonga, four years as Hazon's Bay Area Director and serving on the founding boards of Wilderness Torah and Bay COJEL (Coalition for Jews and the Environment). Deborah is a recipient of the prestigious Covenant Award. Her groundbreaking work as co author of Spirit In Nature/Teaching Judaism and Ecology on the Trail paved the way for numerous Jewish outdoor programs for children including the Teva Learning Center. Most recently, Deborah co-founded SVARA's Queer Talmud Camp and worked with Keshet to create a curriculum that helps Jewish summer camps be welcoming and inclusive of gender non-conforming campers and staff. Deborah has served on the faculty of many Jewish professional fellowships currently for Hineni a Jewish leadership training for LGBTQ folks. Her recent projects also include creating: Spirit In Nature Podcasts with Sarah Lefton and “Divorce and Discovery a Jewish Healing Retreat” offered in partnership with Camp Tawonga to be launched in October 2022. Before entering the Jewish not-for-profit world, Deborah was a National Park Service Ranger. She lives in Berkeley with her wife, Rabbi Sue Reinhold PhD. Between them they have four twenty-something year old children and a beloved doodle dog.
