Here is how: GiveNow - Community Radio Federations Donations Fund GUESTSPeter Bennett From his experience in the Emergency  Departments of busy hospitals Peter sees teamwork and training as essential. How are we training and creating the teamwork necessary to withstand the climate emergency?  Now, after a sojourn in remote communities, he takes climate action. He  was part of the Move Beyond Coal event that circled the NAB HQ in Sydney plus a dignified and meditative sit -in at their foyer. He sees that as long as they finance new coal and gas projects, they are detroying the health of all future generations. .Getting-to-know-our-rural-GPs.pdf (racgp.org.au) Coral Bleach Was  an "effluent" protester at the " Super Dirty Gas Awards" . And to encourage them – and all uber wealthy superfunds – to staunchly resist the calls of greedy and selfish ordinary people wanting a stable climate. Believe me, gas, like smoking, is perfectly fine for people, and the planet!” Peter Sainsbury After a life in Public Health,  Peter now writes regularly for Pearls and Irritations. He knows the value of independent media and is a staunch friend of our radio show. We talk about his article Environment: Developing a better relationship with Nature (johnmenadue.com) Meraki Mei was a teenager when they went to the Bentley Blockade. This hypnotic song was a finalist  in the Environmental Music Prize and the video takes you to the Lismore floods 2022 and Back to Bentley. Warrior // Meraki Mae – The Environmental Music PrizeSent in by Lock the Gate Alliance another staunch climate action group and supporter of this show, Alex SmithHost of  Radio Ecoshock which you can hear 6am every Sunday on Radio 3CR. It is broadcast from over 100 community Radio stations, so Alex knows the true value of the independence we have. He is a real colleague and help to me, as we broadcast the sort of stories many people DO NOT want to hear. We talk about the widespread forest fires in Canada, where he lives and the Asian Heatwave which is breaking records but is rarely front page news in Australia. As he says the big corporations have trillions and yet all we are asking for is a few thousand dollars to keep radical voices on air. People call it Lapland.According to the journal Nature  February 2022"The growth of methane emissions slowed around the turn of the millennium, but began a rapid and mysterious uptick around 2007. The spike has caused many researchers to worry that global warming is creating a feedback mechanism that will cause ever more methane to be released, making it even harder to rein in rising temperatures." ‘Dangerously Fast' Methane Increase Suggests Feedback Mechanism May Have Begun - The Energy Mix(link is external)Methane emissions are rising dangerously fast. Methane  is a short lived gas but affects the climate many more times than CO2. In terms of climate action cutting methane in agriculture and the fossil fuel industry is  the low hanging fruit we need to cut down with urgency and determination. Canada committed to reducing oil and gas methane emissions by 75% by 2030. What could Australia do?.We are a gas producer, and here is an idea from the Centre for global developmentOil and gas producing countries could volunteer to apply remote sensing (satellite) technology to measure—and fiscal policies to disincentivize—methane emissions from wasteful gas flaring (following Nigeria's example), and also volunteer to implement existing gas monetization technology (following the example of Norway). CLIMATE  ACTION  SHOW  OCTOBER 31ST 2022Produced by Vivien Langford ROSS GARNAUT -  SUPERPOWER  TRANSFORMATIONKAY WENNAGEL  - ELECTRIC VEHICLE BULK BUY Guests ROSS GARNAUT -  Professor Emeritus in  Economics at Melbourne University. His new book isThe Superpower Transformation  - Making Australia's Zero Carbon Future.https://www.blackincbooks.com.au/books/superpower-transformationRoss sees two disruptive events this year. The election of the ALP in Australia and the disruption of oil and gas exports to Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine. He says "Europe hesitated then COMMITTED decisively to the new economy" Will Australia make the same committment? We talked about :Regional transformations, such as making agricultural UREA with green hydrogen instead of importing 92% from countries where it is produced using coal  or gas as feedstock. Industrial Transformations, such  as helping China lower its costs of decarbonisation by producing GREEN STEEL here with local iron ore. Methane Transformations by stopping subsidies to new coal and gas projects and mandating the strict prevention of FUGITIVE METHANE EMISSIONS from leaky pipes and mines. A more thorny problem for us, if we want to manufacture zero carbon goods with our superpower resources of wind and solar energy,  is how to extract the TRANSITION MINERALS  here and abroad without riding rough shod over precious ecosystems and sacred places? Ross argues that they are essential for  zero carbon modern medicine and modern life but as a quarry nation we have a huge responsibiliy NOT to continue extracting here and overseas in a damaging way. We did not discuss the alternatives of a post extractivist, steady state economics but we welcome any contributions next year to discuss this VITAL matter. Ross talks about the recent savaging of training for geophysics and mettalurgy specialists. Australia  once had a proud reputation in this field but more money now  goes to moon research  than to manage the use of the transition minerals so much in demand! He says the jobs summit made some headway but a lot more needs to be done to protect the environment and  insists that engaging  indigenous people at the forefront of these transformations is essential.https://www.neweconomy.org.au/nena-hubs/sector/post-extractivism/https://treasury.gov.au/sites/default/files/inline-files/Jobs-and-Skills-Summit-Outcomes-Document.pdf     KAY WENNAGEL - interviewed by Michael Staindl. The ballad was discovered among a collection of papers relating to the strike by a studious Lancashire miner, J.S. Bell. The tune was supplied by J. Dennison, of Walker and, together with the text, can be found in A.L. Lloyd's Come All Ye Bold Miners.A challenge to listeners to send us the ballads of Green Extractivism - the songs of the species. Then I called David Rovics about his new  song "116degrees in Portland Town". We discuss why the connection between our exported coal and gas and their exported oil and tar sands is not made front and centre in the present tragedy.Their raw response illustrates the urgent question motivating KIm Stanley Robinson's novel: What will motivate us to take the necessary climate action?   We start with Mark Spencer reading an extract from the first chapter of Ministry for the Future. He takes us to India, where the combination of heat and humidity creates a tragedy, which leaves the hero traumatised. The political effect of millions of deaths prompts a change of government .Lizzy Maddox reads part of  the chapter where a pilot describes his seven months of aerosol spraying to create something like the effect of  a Mt Pinatubo Volcanic eruption. This is speculative fiction, but in the current crisis we need  to draw on the imagination as well as the science. There are cameo appearances from Kim Stanley Robinson and Dr Liz Hanna. She explains why the combination of humidity and heat , the wet bulb effect, is such a killer. If you like this format of science, fiction and on the ground reporting please let us know at Radio 3CR - 21 Smith St Fitzroy. She cited studies and government reports showing Canada was warming twice as fast as the rest of the world and monthly higher temperatures were being broken three times more frequently than cold temperature records.“I've worked with climate projections for 25 years so we knew this was coming: yet it's still a shocker when you see these records falling in real life in a place you're from,” she tweeted.

Joe Toscano (pictured), not the Melbourne fruiterer, but the semi-retired doctor, who plays a leading role in giving oxygen (that’s not an intended pun) to the anarchist conversation. Dr Toscano, Joe or Joseph to his friends, is something of the everywhere man when it comes to anarchism as he is deeply involved with the Anarchist News Institute, the Public Interests Before Corporate Interests movement and broadcasting about anarchism on Radio 3CR. What, you might ask, is a podcast about the climate crisis doing talking with an anarchist - if you listen to the interview, Joe says he has been an anarchist since he was 16 - Joe explains that anarchism is just another way of governing society and if you listen to Joe it quickly becomes clear that what is exists, the processes we have are not working. Beyond the fact that we are pretty much locked into a potentially existential climate crisis, that we have violence, both practical and implied consuming much of the world and the world’s economic system promotes inequality and hands power to just a few people, suggests we should examine all the alternatives and so anarchism most certainly deserves examination and consideration. PAUSE EMISSION! IT'S A PANDEMIC.The Beyond Zero Emissions Community show produced by Vivien Langford and Michaela Stubbs. Broadcast at Radio 3CR in Melbourne  and  Radio Skid Row in SydneyGUESTSGilbert Rochecouste - Founder of Village WellChristine Milne - Greens International  AmbassadorJohn Grimes  - Smart Energy CouncilTragic times for many as hospitals and unemployment agencies are overwhelmed by Corona Virus.Challenging times for climate campaigners as this PAUSE in global emissions is a fork in the road.  CANA chat lunchtime webinars show we could  flatten the curve of emissions path we are on. The shutdown of industry in China is reportedly  yielding a 25% drop in emissions.Aviation and other transport is slowing and how happy will the elderly be to go on a cruise ship in the future? Could we achieve 700% Renewable energy and not only provision new green industries here but export green energy overseas? The lifting of some pollution means better health and blue skies. But will the global dimming effect of all that smoke mean a rise in emissions? Gilbert Rochecouste, fresh from an epiphany in the Tarkine, talks about pressing the reset button on the rat race.Climate action is often stymied by the elephant in the room which is consumption. How can we reset our lives,to relocalise and share, in the decade when emissions need to plummet? Citizens are leading a new narrative after the drought, the fires and now the pandemic. We  are at a tipping point in consciousness. We must not let the big institutions and corporations drag us back to the old paradigm which is destroying the biosphere. Christine Milne spoke to the Beyond Zero Emissions show at the Climate Emergency Summit. She is sure the fossil fuel industry was positioning itself for bail outs at Davos even before the pandemic was declared worldwide. "They are years ahead of in the strategy".  We must not supply thecinfrastructure them to o p en up the Gallee,# the Beetaloo and the North West Shelf. In a wide ranging analysis she says we must stop their subsidies. They are not too big to fail and there are many alternatives. John Grimes gave a talk to the People's Assembly on the first day of Federal Parliament in Canberra. Bushfire smoke was still billowing over the lawns and boxes of now rare face masks were on hand for anyone with trouble breathing. He was scathing about the lobbyists for coal, oil and gas who greatly outnumber lobbyists for clean energy solutions. They have far greater access and are a corrupting influence on our democracy. He is a true patriot and impatient for the climate emergency to turbo charge training in all the trades needed for 700% renewable energy. With leadership we could remain as an energy exporter instead of the" international parriah" holding out against the global shift a green economy. # The biggest coal reserve in the world.South Australia is already at 75% and ACT at 100%. But our present renewable energy target is zero.

All the  people were concerned about the Kosciusko National park. But beyond this, they have gathered evidence that the pumped hydro project announced by PM  Turnbull will never be used as the battery of our nation. At the very least they are begging the authorities to STOP and reconsider yet Government people.  to paraphrase Henry Higgins, " listen very nicely, then go out and do precisely what they want".The jobs and stimulus to the economy are irresistible. But climate action isn't always glamorous.  If we want the greatest amount of stored renewable energy, there are many better and cheaper ways to get it. These experts are like the retired fire chiefs who were ignored at our peril. Please listen carefully, it's technical and I am not the Four Corners team, but this story is a scoop.

Once again, The Rhonda Jankovic Competition for Poetry on a Social Justice Theme has been held, with 166 entries from across Australia. Kevin Brophy, well known poet and academic, was this year's judge, and the quality of the poetry was very high. In this broadcast can be heard almost all of the prizewinning entries, as well as the voice of Rhonda herself reading one of her own poems. What is social justice?Social justice relates to inequalities stemming from power relations, indifference or exploitation. It is associated with, for instance, economic conditions, political persecution, health, education, dis/ability, ethnicity, race, gender, sex, sexual orientation, age, and violence. Poetry Award entries may identify inequalities by observation and/or advocate solutions.  http://www.rhondajankovicliterarysociety.org/http://www.rhondajankovicliterarysociety.org/poetry-award.htmlRhonda Jankovic, an accomplished poet with publication credits in journals and several awards, was a passionate patron of emerging poets and a staunch advocate for people disadvantaged in society. After a childhood suffering abuse Rhonda was removed to an orphanage. But her new 'family' repeated the abuse, so Rhonda took to the streets of Christchurch (New Zealand) where she lived for Several years. At 18, fleeing her negative life, Rhonda scraped together a one-way fare to Sydney (Australia), bereft of further cash, accommodation or people meeting her. Witnessing Rhonda openly sobbing on the plane, a compassionate couple invited her to their home and assisted her with obtaining employment. Having left school at 14, Rhonda subsequently studies and gained entry into La Trobe University (Melbourne) where she reached postgraduate level researching Australian history. Rhonda pursued her advocacy for poets and social justice as producer/host of two Radio 3CR programs -  Spoken Word (poetry) and SUWA (focusing on issues facing homeless and similarly disadvantaged people).  She died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 49. To honour and continue her work the Rhonda Jankovic Society for Promotion of Social Justice through Literature was formed; it has posthumously published Rhonda's poetry collection Your Heartbeat in Mine and established the Rhonda Jankovic Poetry Award.About the SocietySoon after Rhonda died on 25 November 2012, a number of supporters - inspired by her laudable achievements, by the knowledge these were attained in the face of daunting hurdles, and also by her passionate commitment to both social justice and poetry - felt moved to initiate an ongoing tribute which would actively promote Rhonda's values. This led to Sponsors contributing to a Friends of Rhonda Fund, which largely paid for the production of Your Heartbeat in Mine, and also to the formation of the Rhonda Jankovic Society for Promotion of Social Justice through Literature. As of April 2013, the Rhonda Jankovic Society for Promotion of Social Justice through Literature Inc. became an incorporated association (Incorporated Registration: A0059242G).Objectives of the SocietyThe Society adopted the following objectives:Accept and manage sponsorships and donations for the purpose of promoting social justice through literature;Manage a Rhonda Jankovic Social Justice Poetry Award, the frequency of which will be determined, and;Subject to funding, contribute donations or similar supportive measures to causes in the spirit of Rhonda Jankovic's social justice philosophy.
