Even when he's a little older, he's still at it. Help us expand our Muslim media project here: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/membershipThe Australian government has announced a general election, including elections to its lower house. Its Labour government has grown tired in office and, particularly important for Muslims, has colluded to enable a genocide in Gaza. In both the UK and America, Muslim and conscientious voices worked together to hold the government to account for what has been the worst crime in decades. Will Australia's Muslim community build upon its newfound resilience and unity and work with allies to punish those responsible for Gaza at the ballot box. Today, we have a very special guest. Senator Fatima Payman is a Senator in the Australian upper house for Western Australia. In June 2024, she was the first in her party since 1988 to cross the floor over a vote on Palestine's statehood. By July, she resigned over the government's policy on genocide—having been suspended by PM Anthony Albanese. Although Fatima is not up for re-election this time, these coming elections may be another extremely important test for Muslims in the West and their commitment to their ummah and justice. We all know how difficult it has been for food and essential supplies to reach the beleaguered people of Gaza. This, Insha'Allah, is changing. We have partnered with a charity, Baitulmaal, because now, more than ever, there is a need not only in Gaza but also in Turkish controlled Northern Syria and in all the places we routinely talk about in this program where our ummah is subject to abject poverty. We have chosen this charity because Baitulmaal is a non-profit with people on the ground who organize well-thought-out projects and serve the most needy. You can also support The Thinking Muslim through a one-time donation: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/DonateListen to the audio version of the podcast:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7vXiAjVFnhNI3T9Gkw636aApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-thinking-muslim/id1471798762Sign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comPurchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merchFind us on:Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinking_muslimFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslimBlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/thinkingmuslim.bsky.socialHost: https://twitter.com/jalalaynHost IG: https://www.instagram.com/jalalayns/Website Archive: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com Hosted on Acast. He says "Europe hesitated then COMMITTED decisively to the new economy" Will Australia make the same committment? We talked about :Regional transformations, such as making agricultural UREA with green hydrogen instead of importing 92% from countries where it is produced using coal  or gas as feedstock. Industrial Transformations, such  as helping China lower its costs of decarbonisation by producing GREEN STEEL here with local iron ore. Methane Transformations by stopping subsidies to new coal and gas projects and mandating the strict prevention of FUGITIVE METHANE EMISSIONS from leaky pipes and mines. A more thorny problem for us, if we want to manufacture zero carbon goods with our superpower resources of wind and solar energy,  is how to extract the TRANSITION MINERALS  here and abroad without riding rough shod over precious ecosystems and sacred places? Ross argues that they are essential for  zero carbon modern medicine and modern life but as a quarry nation we have a huge responsibiliy NOT to continue extracting here and overseas in a damaging way. We did not discuss the alternatives of a post extractivist, steady state economics but we welcome any contributions next year to discuss this VITAL matter. Ross talks about the recent savaging of training for geophysics and mettalurgy specialists. Australia  once had a proud reputation in this field but more money now  goes to moon research  than to manage the use of the transition minerals so much in demand! He says the jobs summit made some headway but a lot more needs to be done to protect the environment and  insists that engaging  indigenous people at the forefront of these transformations is essential.https://www.neweconomy.org.au/nena-hubs/sector/post-extractivism/https://treasury.gov.au/sites/default/files/inline-files/Jobs-and-Skills...    KAY WENNAGEL - interviewed by Michael Staindl.https://smartenergy.org.au/industry-directory/the-good-car-company/The Good Car Company is a social enterprise dedicated to decarbonising transport and has been working with community groups and local councils across Australia to accelerate the take-up of affordable electric cars through community bulk buys. Australia wide+61 361214624www.goodcar.co  MUSIC - The coal owner and the Pittman's wife sung by Robert Farmer This ballad is believed to date from the Durham strike of 1844 and to have been written by William Hornsby, a collier of Shotton Moor, Durham. We begin with the highs and lows of the International Energy Agency's updated 1.5 Degrees Scenario, which notes fast progress on scaleup of key technologies that is - just - compensating for slow progress on emissions reductions. IEA reckon 1.5 degrees is still possible without immense reliance on overshoot and net negative emissions; but there's a big gap between what would be needed to achieve that and most economies' current plans. Our main paper Benefit-cost analysis informs - and sometimes dictates - a lot of policy decisions about climate and energy, and how the sums are done really matters. In “Efficiency vs. Welfare in Benefit-Cost Analysis: The Case of Government Funding”, law professors and frequent Democratic administration officials Zachary Liscow and Cass Sunstein (coauthor of policy pageturner “Nudge”!) explain what's up with a major Biden Administration rewrite of key guidance to public agencies. The new approach will re-target benefit cost analysis from prioritising economic efficiency to prizing overall welfare. This means either weighting costs and benefits by the incomes of the affected communities (since an extra dollar creates more welfare improvement for a poor person than a rich one), or averaging values across broader regions.Critics from the Society for Benefit Cost Analysis hate it! Liscow and Sunstein reckon it's a great start that can produce much fairer and better decisions - including about climate adaptation. Will Australia end up taking these ideas on board? Will they survive the next US Administration? Why do our hosts disagree about rivers? This is the second episode of a two-part series about China in the modern world. In the previous podcast, I was joined by Mr Mitchell History, a fantastic YouTube channel about history, to answer the million-dollar question. What political system does China actually have? For this episode, we are thinking more global with our focus turned away from the domestic to the international. As the American Empire or Pax Americana in Latin fades with the ascension of China, how will nations near and far adjust to the rise of another aspiring empire? So, in the age of ‘living dangerously', as coined by Australia's former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, how will China behave? And perhaps more importantly, how will other nations and states react to this reshuffling of geopolitical power? Will China get increasingly defensive and hostile as the United States attempts to prevent its economic rise, or will China turn to diplomacy to establish itself as the centre of a new system? With possibility of nuclear war looming over flash points in Asia and Europe, such as Taiwan, India and Pakistan and now Russia and Ukraine, I think it's high time that we all try to be a little more informed so we can better decipher the madness of the 21st century. From nuclear holocaust to building new alliances, and everything in between, I along with Mr Mitchell History will try to predict the twists and turns in the game of empire that await us this century. CLIMATE  ACTION  SHOW  OCTOBER 31ST 2022Produced by Vivien Langford ROSS GARNAUT -  SUPERPOWER  TRANSFORMATIONKAY WENNAGEL  - ELECTRIC VEHICLE BULK BUY Guests ROSS GARNAUT -  Professor Emeritus in  Economics at Melbourne University. His new book isThe Superpower Transformation  - Making Australia's Zero Carbon Future.https://www.blackincbooks.com.au/books/superpower-transformationRoss sees two disruptive events this year. The election of the ALP in Australia and the disruption of oil and gas exports to Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine. He says the jobs summit made some headway but a lot more needs to be done to protect the environment and  insists that engaging  indigenous people at the forefront of these transformations is essential.https://www.neweconomy.org.au/nena-hubs/sector/post-extractivism/https://treasury.gov.au/sites/default/files/inline-files/Jobs-and-Skills-Summit-Outcomes-Document.pdf     KAY WENNAGEL - interviewed by Michael Staindl. Australia's National Electricity Market was suspended by the market operator for nine days in June 2022. Are renewables coming into the system too quickly? What's happening with batteries? Will Australia be able to cope with the retirement of coal-fired power stations? What future for Australian foreign policy under the Albanese government? As the Albanese government approaches its first month in office, I interviewed Hervé Lemahieu, Director of Research at the Lowy Institute, Susannah Patton, Research Fellow and Project Director, Power and Diplomacy Program at the Lowy Institute, and Ashley Townshend, Senior Fellow at the Asia Program of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, to discuss how Australian foreign policy may evolve under the Albanese government. Are there major divergences between the Coalition and Labor party on Australian foreign policy? Will AUKUS remain an important factor in Australia's regional strength in the Indo-Pacific? Will Australia deepen its cooperation with France in the Indo-Pacific now that the fallout from AUKUS has settled? How is Australia working to counter-balance growing Chinese influence in the region? Does Australia view China as a potential aggressor against Taiwan following the Russian invasion of Ukraine?

For the second time in a fortnight, residents of Perth are facing lockdowns or increased restrictions due to a coronavirus outbreak from hotel quarantine. Last week, a security guard contracted the virus in a WA quarantine hotel. From there, it's broken into the community with at least two close contacts testing positive. It's again put a spotlight on hotels being used for quarantine and has disrupted the lives of millions of West Australians. So on today's Coronacast, what do we know about the latest outbreak and are more lockdowns coming? Also on today's show: * Does the AstraZeneca vaccine protect against serious illness from the serious variants? * Will Australia be getting the Moderna vaccine. If so can it approved and be released this year? * And a study about a man who suffered from COVID-19 for 8 months!
