In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid explores how small daily irritations—the "pebbles in your shoe"—can significantly impact wellbeing and contribute to burnout when left unaddressed. Drawing from insights at the recent Psychological Safety Summit, she shares how seemingly minor issues like "not having somewhere to store my bag" can create constant cognitive drain through what researchers call "attention residue." Dr. Braid offers five practical strategies to identify and address these small irritations before they accumulate, including validating your experience, assessing impact, identifying what's within your control, taking specific actions, and creating helpful boundaries. Listeners are invited to become curious about their own daily irritations and recognize that addressing these small issues isn't petty—it's an essential part of self-care and burnout prevention. This episode provides actionable tools to help you identify the small stressors that might be stealing your energy and focus without you even realizing it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Post-Growth Australia Podcast (PGAP), we pay tribute to Dr. John Coulter, who sadly passed away in September 2024. John Richard Coulter (3 December 1930 – 6 September 2024) was a trailblazer in the conservation movement, most notably serving as Leader of the Australian Democrats in the early 1990s. In 1971, he organised an open letter published in The Australian newspaper, addressed "to those who shape Australia's destiny," urging them to recognise the limits to growth. (This episode is in memory of Dr John Coulter) John remained an executive member of Sustainable Population Australia (https://population.org.au/) (SPA) until the end of his life. Through SPA, he fearlessly challenged mainstream media for neglecting critical issues such as overpopulation and the limits to growth. In 2021, PGAP had the privilege of interviewing John at his home in the Adelaide Hills. Unfortunately, a bushfire had swept through the property a few months earlier, leaving much of the land scarred. Walking through the devastated bushland was a sobering experience and a stark reminder of the profound changes occurring as society's growth experiment entered the "decade of consequence." This interview was originally broadcast in 2021 as part of the episode World Population Day 2021 (https://pgap.fireside.fm/wpd2021). For this memorial episode, we are re-releasing that conversation, as John's thoughts, perspectives, and reflections resonate even more powerfully in retrospect. Co-hosts Mark Allen and Michael Bayliss share their reflections on the interview and John's legacy, particularly his pioneering work in the early 1970s for the broader post-growth movement. (The 1971 Newspaper open letter) A heartfelt tribute to John Coulter was penned by Dr Bob Brown: "I was sad to hear of John Coulter's death, but that sadness was quickly replaced by a celebration of John's remarkable, life-long advocacy for the environment. In his time as the Democrats' spokesperson, he was the major Australian political voice for protecting this nation's wildlife, wild regions, and oceans, as well as promoting greener living for us all. He was a gentleman but unswerving in his devotion to life on Earth. South Australia and the nation are indebted to John for a long, caring, and actively eco-saving career." One of John's final articles, "The Guiding Criminal Lie in Economics (https://johnmenadue.com/the-guiding-criminal-lie-in-economics/)", was published in Pearls and Irritations in 2024. A moving tribute in the same publication, "Vale Dr. John Coulter (https://johnmenadue.com/vale-dr-john-coulter/)", was written by former SPA President Jenny Goldie. In April 2024, John was invited to become a Patron of SPA (https://population.org.au/about/people/john-coulter/)—a role that he very much cherished during the brief months before his passing. The Post-Growth Australia Podcast will take a short break over the festive season before returning to Season Seven in January. In the meantime, we warmly encourage you to share this and other episodes of PGAP with your friends, family, and networks. You can rate and review us on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/post-growth-australia-podcast/id1522194099), and we welcome your feedback, thoughts, and suggestions for future episodes. You can contact us HERE (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact). Remember, podcasts are rapidly becoming a key medium for mass communication and influence in the modern age. It is vital that we work together to ensure the message of Degrowth reaches a wide audience. "He made love to me, smooth as a colon, and when he went down on me my body waved like a tilde." Secrecy is an aphrodisiac. As powerful as pursuit, it is often mistaken for ardour. It is by and of itself an indulgence. Its translation into a stronger emotion, into love, is a different genre of effort. Chekhov once memorably said “There's a proper order for a woman to become a man's friend. First she's an acquaintance, then she's a lover, and finally she becomes a good friend.” Love then is a long distance run, and friendship a journey of a lifetime. Far beyond the satisfaction of an ego to ‘get' someone, is recognition and acceptance. Of giving the time to know someone so thoroughly that the things we fall in love with mesh seamlessly with what we don't. Irritations become quirks become things we adore. Time spent together is finding meaning in life. And hiatuses are then filled with remembrance which then act as bridges. Till the next time. My best friends never complain about not being in touch. If they do, they are still lovers and have not transcended to friendship, which in the holy trinity of relationships, is the highest form of coexistence. (☺️) As I walk through the hundreds of relationships I have formed - online, physical, tangential, official, family - I have continually learnt how it is often our closest relations who suck the marrow out of the marginal happiness we exist within. And sometimes it is mere strangers who elevate us with their attention or life stories. I survive by being in a zen state. As a Buddhist sutra succinctly advises - “Sab anitya hai”. Everything passes. Indeed. Adam Hurrey, Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker field the listeners' February entries for Mesut Haaland Dicks, as the Clichés faithful nominate their niche footballing fascinations and irritations. Among the selections are mishit shots that turn into crossfield passes, players going to absurd lengths to convince a referee they got the ball in a tackle, when both sets of fans applaud a passage of play, full-backs refusing to readjust their shorts and montages that constantly remind you of a famous goal your team conceded. Meanwhile, the Adjudication Panel wonder if a player can have "genuine height" and if "potential banana skin" is appropriate for the Champions League knockout stages. What do you do with the irritations that are in your life-- God allows these to shape us into humble servants. It is not always our time and our desires, we have to learn to yield this to God and be uncomfortable. If we do not learn that, then He will bring reproofs into our lives to change us.

Isn't Starbucks just a tad affected when the have “baristas” and sizes like grande and venti and trenta and Huey, Dewey, and Louie? Is it possible not to want to body slam a “barista” who informs you they don't like to put whole milk in a cappuccino because of “poor frothing”? I saw a couple enter a diner for breakfast carrying takeout Starbucks coffee. That level of self-absorption can cause implosion. When it's ten degrees with a wind-chill of minus 15, why do women in skirts and dresses have bare legs? Is that really comfortable or just a concession to fashion that can cause serious illness? When I buy shoes, I can wear them right out of the store. Women, a year later, are still complaining about the pain (and apparently some hire other women to “break them in”). Talking to the movie screen or to performers on stage in a theater is not a cultural manifestation. It is simple unbounded rudeness. Trying to pay a dinner bill proportionately (“We didn't have an appetizer and I only had one drink”) is the hallmark of a scarcity mentality. If you can't afford to simply pay an equal share, don't go to dinner. Eat the dog's kibbles. I'm not impressed by a picture of an empty hall where you will be speaking. I'm impressed by a picture of a full hall while you are speaking. Revving your engine or playing your radio at jet-take-off levels is not a sign of masculinity, but rather a lack thereof. Learn of the former presidential candidate who drives me into the shower.
