Rob Catalano, Chief Engagement Officer at WorkTango, shares insights on how leaders can enhance employee engagement through simple, regular micro-doses of recognition and feedback. He discusses his career transition from what he thought was his dream job (customer experience marketing) and how that translated into his actual dream job (engaging employee experiences). Why is it that so many employees at recognizable brands are miserable? He recognized the need for leaders to create environments where employees can be raving fans just as we seek our customers to be raving fans. Rob offers practical tips for how to recognize employee contributions and deliver constructive feedback in a way that unleashes talent and uplifts workplace culture for overall organizational success. The discussion also highlights generational differences in feedback expectations, particularly with Gen Z employees. Catalano advocates for a culture of curiosity over blame, encouraging leaders to engage in meaningful conversations that foster growth and development. Recognition is best when it is SMT - Specific, Meaningful, and Timely. Feedback doesn't have to take a lot of time, but you must make some time for it. Feedback is better in smaller, more frequent micro-doses. Focus recognition more on employee's contributions and competencies and less on longevity.

Employee Voice in the Workplace

How is employee VOICE in the workplace different from SATISFACTION or ENGAGEMENT? Well, it's more frequent, measures more than engagement or satisfaction (although it might do that too), and it may be diagnostic. I spoke with Rob Catalano who started and runs WorkTango which is a tool to help their customers understand the perspective of their employees. Employee voice can be used to understand the sentiment of employees in general but also in response to particular initiatives or changes. For example, it could help measure the effectiveness of diversity, equity and inclusion programs. And, if shared with leaders, can help them respond quickly to the feedback of their own employees. worktango.com

Join in for a conversation with Rob Catalano, Co-Founder and CEO (Chief Engagement Officer) at WorkTango. WorkTango is an HR software company based out of Toronto with a passion to improve work lives. Rob started out his career in the world of traditional marketing for consumer goods and quickly got interested in what drove human behaviour. He became one of the early employees at Achievers, the employee rewards program. This was not the master plan. Rob had left the marketing world to start his next venture but it was a fateful application to a bootstrapped startup he didn't know about that propelled a 10-year career into the world of HR and changing workplaces. After Achievers was acquired Rob had the choice of staying on as a C-suite executive with a very cushy compensation package but he left it to pursue his passion. He left Achievers with his co-founder to bootstrap WorkTango and it's been a 4-year journey of building a company with a passion, not a mission. We cover Rob's various inflection points in his journey, making tough but obvious decisions, and following a passion.
