This week on the Expert Voices podcast, Randy Wootton, CEO of Maxio, speaks with Drew Neisser, Founder and CEO of Renegade Marketing. Drew shares his extensive experience and key insights into the dynamic relationship between CEOs and CMOs, especially for early-stage founders. Randy and Drew explore crucial aspects such as hiring strategies for the first CMO, balancing roles between C-suite executives, and how to set up CMOs for success in the evolving SaaS landscape. Drew illustrates how innovative marketing strategies can significantly affect business outcomes and common pitfalls that can lead to CMO failures. Quotes“You need something called a reverse migration strategy. Normally you would take two years to migrate a brand from one place to another. Think about a trade show. You go to a trade show booth and I see a brand, oh look, there's the Microsoft Windows booth, just in case you happen to be a customer. If you're a customer of theirs, you're going to stop. But if they suddenly changed their name to White Wall, you're not going to stop. Those aren't your people. You're not a customer. So you need to be thinking about your customers and their ability to find you at a trade show.” -Drew Neisser [17:45]“There is a real misunderstanding, and this is the mistake I think CMOs make. They go in, new job, and they say, "Oh, it's a brand problem. We need a new website, we need a new logo, we need a new color," and that's all they change. To me, if you understand strategy, if you're changing your strategy, you're changing your product. And say we're doing a brand refresh and we're not changing something about the product, why are you bothering?” -Drew Neisser [37:46]Expert Takeaways Strategic Alignment: Define clear roles and set expectations between CEOs and CMOs to ensure a unified approach toward growth and marketing strategies.Courageous Strategy: Emphasize daring and distinctive strategies in marketing, focusing on differentiation and simplicity.Artful Ideation: Engage employees and cultivate creativity within the marketing efforts to create compelling narratives and pithy brand stories.Execution and Measurement: Implement a scientific method to measure the impact of marketing activities, ensuring actions align with broader business goals.Avoiding Pitfalls: Recognize the top reasons CMOs fail, such as mismatched expectations and not having a cohesive operating system, to navigate and correct these issues proactively.Timestamps(00:00) Building Effective CEO and CMO Relationships(06:01) The Importance of Taking Time for Personal Growth(07:40) The Relationship Between CEOs and CMOs in Business Strategy(13:25) Building Brand Reputation and Navigating Rebranding Challenges(21:22) Renegade Marketing: Courageous, Artful, Thoughtful, Scientific Strategies(25:41) The Power of a One Word Strategy in Branding(27:41) Engaging Employees and Customers to Build a Strong Brand(36:13) Top Reasons CMOs Fail and How to Avoid ThemLinksMaxioUpcoming Events

Episode 75 - Change Management Summary In this episode, Scott and Mo discuss change management and its importance in the workplace. They highlight the need for leaders to encounter challenges, build resilience, and foster open communication. They emphasize the importance of recognizing opportunities and engaging employees in the change process. The hosts also encourage leaders to be proactive and continuously evaluate and refine their approach to change management. They conclude by emphasizing the need for leaders to be open to change and drive positive change within their organizations. 3 Ways to Deal with Change Management Focus on encountering challenges. Change can disrupt the status quo Change can create resistance among employees. If you're not encountering challenges, then you're not leading. Look for the unexpected Get out in front of challenges and be ready to work them out ResilienceWhat is going on in your company? How can you work amidst those challenges? How can you build that resilience within your team that is going to be vital for navigating change effectively? Be adaptable. Are you ready to adapt quickly to change? Are you ready to bounce back from the setbacks? BOOK: The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organization, by Kouzes and Posner. “The only way you're going to get good is to get good”. Don't baby your people. Build resiliency in your team. Leaders think challenges are opportunities. Foster open communication. Open up - Be honest Allow team members to express within the team and to one another their concerns. Be part of expressing those concerns Change presents opportunities for innovation and for growth. How do you recognize opportunities? Focused on the things that can be used as a learning moment or a teaching moment. Focus on Engaging Employees. The “Buy-in” - John Maxwell's The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership To be an effective leader, you need to create a buy-in of ownership for your people. Empower team members To contribute ideas Give those solutions Foster a sense of ownership Create commitment BOOK: Made in America, by Sam Walton Encourage Pro-activists Your people are only going to be proactive if you allow them to be proactive. Continuous evaluation and refinement of our approach to change is going to ensure ongoing success. QUESTIONS: What are the things that are worth evaluating in your business? What are your feedback mechanisms? Are you giving your people a way to tell you the things that are going good and bad? Do you have an open door policy? Are you making it better in your workplace? MO's Final Thoughts: You need to be the most open person in the room when it comes to change management. It is so easy for us as leaders to tell other people that they need to be open to change. When in reality, leaders, it's really us that's not open to change. Don't get upset with your people. Help them and redirect them to where they're supposed to be. Change is what you need to be about. Leaders are all about change. As we talk about encountering challenges, engaging employees, encouraging proactiveness, you know, who's in charge of all that? You are in charge of that as the leader. You're the person who is responsible both for the productivity of your company and specifically for your team. So leaders, remember, it's about embracing opportunity because that's going to bring you to growth and innovation and your people are going to jump onto that process. And when it comes to leadership, you are the one that drives those processes.Give your people the best opportunity to succeed. The way you do that is to get in front and be ready to deal with that change management. A part of a leader's responsibilities is to ensure that the right people are in the right seat on the boat and rowing the same direction at the same cadence. It's a big ask of everyone. The question is what happens if the leader is not present. Does the team still function well or do they kind of fall apart? This consideration is a great indicator of culture and how it is lived out. If people do what they're told because a leader is there, they might be effective, but it's limited. If people continue to fulfill expectations when the leader is NOT there, this is an indicator of community in the work culture. When people support each other in a way that makes sense for them and the organization, it's more than doing a job, it's having a community of support in your work culture. Some ways to move forward include... 1. Engage Employees in Finding Solutions: engaging employees and not accepting "I don't know" as an answer when addressing challenges. Actively involving your team in finding solutions can lead to a more empowered and positive workplace culture. 2. Purposeful Questioning and Active Listening: the way questions are asked on employee responses and the need for active listening to improve organizational culture. Developing effective questioning abilities as leaders can lead to more productive discussions and a healthier work environment. 3. Measurement and Feedback: measuring the success of culture improvement efforts and suggested data points to gauge workplace culture, including absentee rates, engagement in troubleshooting, turnover rates, retention rates, and customer satisfaction. Understanding and acting on measurable data can guide leaders in making informed decisions to improve company culture. People want, no, need to be engaged and have a sense of belonging. This is true in their families, chosen relationships, and work environments. Bosses might have tricks to make people feel involved, but an effective leader will deploy strategies to engage people in meaningful ways. As an example, do not start a "Diversity Committee," and then ignore any recommendations or requests the committee brings forth. Not only is it not helpful, it will also give employees a very strong reason to disengage from that committee AND the culture as it has been demonstrated that their contribution is not valued. Engage employees in meaningful ways, not performative ways. This includes listening and asking questions. Then, Effective Leader, respond appropriately and accordingly to the feedback you receive. We've been around this block a few times before. The No More Leadership BS team offers insights, recommendations, and just a smidgen of storytelling to bring the idea of workplace community to life.

Have standards of leadership because people are going to refer your team or refer working for you to other people based on how they feel like they're treated, are they valued, are they equipped. - Tim Dyck A great first step is to implement a formal referral program. That is only step one though. It is critical that your become an organization that people would want to recommend in the first place. That means treating employees with respect and valuing their input. The next step is to ensure there are high standards of leadership. This is crucial. If our leaders aren't referable, then the whole organization won't be either. One way to check in on this is by asking for feedback. That will help you know if you are doing well. Send anonymous surveys that ask employees how likely they are to recommend working for us to friends, family, and neighbors. It will help the employee net promoter score, which is a solid gauge of our referability. Finally, make sure to survey employees about their leaders' skills. The results are enlightening and can be a perfect guide to numerous improvements. How do you engage over 4,000 employees? Tim Brackney is President and COO of RGP is a global consulting firm. They help Fortune 1000 companies, along with small-midsize firms, fill skills gaps with its top performers for short-term, high impact projects. RGP feels it pioneered the gig economy for professional services. How? RGP gives employees the benefits and security of being an employee, but pays people when they are chargeable. This gives employees the power to say “no.” What does that mean? For instance, RGP people can say they don't want to travel this week, or work for a certain client. There's a lot to learn from Tim. RGP was a hybrid work model prior to the pandemic. Tim shares on this podcast how he and other RGP leaders embrace a human-first approach to attracting and retaining their top performers. He discusses transparency, empathy, and listening skills every leader must have to fully engage with their people. Their leaders plug all their people into communities within RGP. They also intentionally work with employees to advance their skills and experience at a pace that balances the needs of RGP clients and each individual's career targets. David talks with Tim about leadership, working remote or in a hybrid environment, and how RGP attracts and retain top people in a very competitive talent market. Join the conversation! ------- A little background on Tim Brackney: Tim leads RGP's Global Operations. This includes full P&L and operational responsibility for three key theaters of operation: North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
