Dr. Robin Parry is the minor canon for eco-spirituality at Worcester Cathedral, UK. He is also an academic book editor for Wipf and Stock Publishers and the author of several books and articles including The Evangelical Universalist (under the name Gregory MacDonald) and an important article on Christian Universalism in the Four Views on Hell book, which I edited. In this conversation, I didn't bring Robin on for a debate but for him to unpack his biblical case for Christian Universalism. One of the more common Christian slogans you might see plastered upon shirts, bracelets, or other paraphernalia is "Make Heaven Crowded." A nice thought, to say the least! But if that should be our ambition, shouldn't it be God's, as well? If God wants all people to be saved, why aren't they? Why isn't heaven not just crowded... but overcrowded? For a select but growing number of theologians, the answer is that, yes, it will be! Universalism is a position that has seen a recent resurgence, even among Evangelicals, and holds that everyone will (eventually) come to know Christ and be redeemed, though some might have to go through Hell (literally) to get there. And here to defend the position is Dr. Robin Parry, one of the world's foremost experts and defenders of the position. His book, The Evangelical Universalist, was the title that helped to revitalize the position, though it was one he had to publish anonymously at first due to the provocative nature of the subject! Hear about this and much more on the final episode of our Rethinking Hell series!

‘The Evangelical Universalist’ was published in 2006. The author claimed to be an evangelical Christian who believes that everyone will ultimately be saved. Kat Coffin is a musician and an academic specializing in the works of C.S. Lewis and gender theory.  Before you listen to the podcast, maybe check out this wonderful summary Kat Coffin wrote on The Problem of Susan here. Or read this quick Twitter thread summary  Here’s the passage in The Last Battle that makes people so upset about Susan not getting into Aslan’s Country.  JK Rowling on Susan Pevensie and Lewis: “There comes a point where Susan, who was the older girl, is lost to Narnia because she becomes interested in lipstick. She’s become irreligious basically because she found sex. I have a big problem with that.” Neil Gaiman wrote a short story called The Problem of Susan (which we do not necessarily recommend reading as it is . . . intense.) C.S. Lewis was a lot like Susan! Lewis eventually became friends with Dorothy L Sayers and then befriended and married Joy Davidman. An American communist from Brooklyn!  Till We Have Faces--Lewis’ last novel, which was basically co-written with Joy Davidman A Grief Observed--Lewis’ book on his marriage “CS Lewis is not as evangelical as evangelicals want him to be but he’s not as progressive as I want him to be.” -- Kat Coffin George MacDonald, one of Lewis’ main literary mentors, was a universalist. Krispin mentions The Evangelical Universalist, by Robin Parry, which was originally published under the pen name Gregory MacDonald, as a nod to George MacDonald.  Shadowlands is the film about Lewis’ life and marriage to Joy. As Kat Coffin points out, there are elements of it that have been edited to fit the intended audience, so keep that in mind! Find Kat on Twitter Instagram Blog

The harmonious life We had the privilege of celebrating our daughter and son-in-law's first wedding anniversary on Wednesday. Lydia and Bintesh have had 12 months of married life together. A special "thank you" must go to my wonderful mother-in-law who paid for the lunch at "The Florist (https://theflorist.uk.com/locations/watford) " in Watford. Getting family together has proven to be somewhat challenging during the COVID-19 shenanigans. It feels all the sweeter when it works out like it did this week. But in between we miss that sense of doing life together. I have the same feeling about our church fellowship. We see each other online, and occasionally as couples in each other's gardens. But it's not the same as having all 25 members of the Watford church singing together, praying together and chatting over tea and coffee at the end of the service. While we all miss this, it may also creatively help us to consider the true nature of our unity. I'm speaking on the topic of unity this Sunday because it is the headline from Psalm 133 - the next in the Psalms of Ascent. “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1 NIV11)  The NLT swaps the word "unity" for the word "harmony". The Message version translate the verse, “How wonderful, how beautiful, when brothers and sisters get along!” (Psalm 133:1 MESSAGE)  Where does this harmony, this oneness (John 17: 20-23), come from? How is it developed? What stands in its way? I dare say we will not fully answer all these questions in one short sermon on Sunday (though you are welcome to see how far we get). However, as I reflect on the picture of harmonious family life prompted by this verse, I am reminded that unity as God intended to be is a function of a spiritually healthy approach and commitment to relationships, and nothing to do with structures and organisations. I have nothing against organisations and structures as such. But humanity has a propensity to depend upon adherence to the rules of an organisation as a poor, and indeed corrupted substitute for a godly unity. It does not seem to me that the Father, the Son and the Spirit are one because of any sense of structural conformity. What we term the Trinity is, in its essence, the fullest, most perfect and beautiful expression of what the Psalmist longs for. Consider this quote: "Christian worship is nothing more, nor less, than the Spirit enabling us to join in with Christ's worship of the Father. Christian prayer is nothing more, nor less, than the Spirit enabling us to join in with Christ's prayer to the Father." From 'Worshipping Trinity' by Robin Parry. One of the reasons we gather is to join in the self-giving worship of each part of the Godhead towards one another, and, as we worship together, we are drawn into, purified and refined in our relationships. It is God who creates the harmony. Our part is to sing his song-together. Please pray for us on Sunday that as a church, the Watford group will learn together how to be together, worship together, live together as God's people in the kind of harmony that brings him glory and us great joy. Upcoming projects for the next few days A sermon on Psalm 133 for the Watford church this Sunday, & Psalm 134 next Sunday. Continuing the new series on prayer for the Thames Valley church (based on the Lord's prayer from Matthew 6). Next class based on Matthew 6:11. Class 10 of the series “They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might” (Psalm 145:11) - How to prepare yourself to preach A quiet time coaching podcast on "on earth as it is in heaven"  Helping my son to move out into his own studio flat Writing an article on Hebrews 13:17 Editing an article called, "Leader as host, host as leader" based on the idea that leader as host might be a helpful alternative model to the leader as hero or servant Solution focused coaching Many thanks to the two people who have agreed to let me coach them. Let me know if you would like some coaching. Sessions can be as short or as long as needed.  Until the next time, I hope you find greater and greater harmony developing in your local fellowships. Please let me know what you think helps this harmony to become a reality. God bless, Malcolm

Robin's final talk in our series explores perhaps the most significant question of all: "How does a belief in universal salvation influence my life and service in the world—including things like evangelism, counselling, and taking funerals?" Robin is a pastor as well as a theologian, and he brings a wealth of practical experience to this huge question. Does universal salvation mute the gospel and just make us melt into a kind of uncritical pantheism? Robin argues that universal salvation, far from muting our voice in the world, amplifies our voice, and the many ways through which we can bless the world.Video:https://youtu.be/mvkVU-iPKXo Slides:https://www.slideshare.net/gospelconversations/living-in-the-light-of-the-future-universal-restoration-and-practical-theologyrobin-parry iTunes, Spotify, and SoundCloud:https://GospelConversations.com/podcast Social Media:https://Facebook.com/GospelConversationshttps://Twitter.com/GospelConvershttps://YouTube.com/user/GospelConversations Website:https://GospelConversations.com Mailing List:http://eepurl.com/guDp4n

In this third talk of our Hope and Hell conference, Robin paints a sweeping picture of the story of salvation beginning with creation and ending with the eschaton. He then poses the significant question—which fits best into this picture—hell or universal salvation? This talk is quite awe-inspiring—not because it advocates universal salvation (which it does) but even more because it stretches our horizons beyond individual redemption into the purpose of the cosmos. In developing his theme, Robin draws heavily on the magnificent Patristic fathers and their grand conception of the irresistible goodness of God. Video:https://youtu.be/mvkVU-iPKXo Slides:https://www.slideshare.net/gospelconversations/the-story-of-salvation-a-narrative-theology-of-hellrobin-parry iTunes, Spotify, and SoundCloud:https://GospelConversations.com/podcast Social Media:https://Facebook.com/GospelConversationshttps://Twitter.com/GospelConvershttps://YouTube.com/user/GospelConversations Website:https://GospelConversations.com Mailing List:http://eepurl.com/guDp4n

Hermeneutics and Hell: Biblical Interpretation and Universal Salvation—Robin Parry

Gospel Conversations

Universal salvation raises the critically important question of how we read the Bible—or ‘hermeneutics’. That is what Robin covers in this talk. He sweeps us through a big landscape in three succinct waves—each bigger than the one before. Firstly he confronts the foreground question of biblical texts—and he makes the point that everybody has problems here. How do we reconcile God’s love with his omnipotence? He then moves onto slightly broader terrain—we need the read texts in their context BUT the meaning of the texts will often be bigger than even the author intended or realised. And finally, he finishes with a new horizon of interpretation—the future. He talks about the ‘trajectories’ of the biblical canon, which stretch beyond themselves for future generations—like ours—to articulate. He uses the development of the doctrine of the Trinity as an example. So this talk is as much about how we read the Bible as how we do or don’t find ‘universal salvation’ in the Bible. This is the second talk from our Hope and Hell conference.Video:https://youtu.be/mvkVU-iPKXoSlides:https://www.slideshare.net/gospelconversations/hermeneutics-and-hell-by-robin-parryiTunes, Spotify, and SoundCloud:https://GospelConversations.com/podcast Social Media:https://Facebook.com/GospelConversationshttps://Twitter.com/GospelConvershttps://YouTube.com/user/GospelConversations Website:https://GospelConversations.com Mailing List:http://eepurl.com/guDp4n

Tony introduces Rev Dr Robin Parry by explaining what Gospel Conversations is all about—expanding our view of God and that means inquiring into mystery. One of the best ways to inquire is to map out the landscape of a debate—and that is exactly what Robin does in this marvellous talk. He gives us a birds-eye view of the long debate over universalism. But he goes further—and he gives us a map to navigate the territory. He defines what universalism is and is not. He explains the different pathways that have led many orthodox Christians to consider it seriously—Bible, experience, patristics, and ‘gospel logic’. This takes a lot of confusion and heat out of the debate and gives us a clear view of the topic. But it also hints at a bigger view of God, and a broader view of Christian thinking. Robin gives us the gift of years of learning and thought in one hour. This is the first talk from our Hope and Hell Conference.Video:https://youtu.be/TofvLLm_LqI Slides:https://www.slideshare.net/gospelconversations/universal-salvation-a-whistlestop-introduction-hope-and-hell-conference iTunes, Spotify, and SoundCloud:https://GospelConversations.com/podcast Social Media:https://Facebook.com/GospelConversationshttps://Twitter.com/GospelConvershttps://YouTube.com/user/GospelConversations Website:https://GospelConversations.com Mailing List:http://eepurl.com/guDp4n

I was recently asked to give a sermon on rethinking hell at a lovely little Anglican church named St Wilfrid's, and I thought to share it with you, if only to help spark some thought and further conversation about what has turned into a fairly controversial topic in recent years. I was so grateful to be received with such tremendous kindness and generosity of spirit. Obviously, though, 30 minutes is not enough to cover everything that needs to be covered on the subject, and several people reminded me afterwards of what I'd left out. Because I'm an academic, though, I was well aware of what I could not cover. So, if you're interested in wrestling more with this topic, there are a few books I would highly recommend: Thomas Allin's "Christ Triumphant" (edited by Robin Parry), Gregory McDonald's (Robin Parry's) "The Evangelical Universalist," Brad Jersak's "Her Gates Will Never Shut," Hans Urs von Balthasar's "Dare We Hope," and Thomas Talbot's "The Inescapable Love of God."

Robin Parry is a theologian best known for advocating universalism (see our interview with him on this very topic). More recently he's turned his attention to writing about The Biblical Cosmos. In this book he systematically lays out all the weirdness of the biblical universe, with its flat earth, the dead residing underneath it and God residing above a solid sky dome. Oh, and there's sea monsters and angel-stars for good measure. The question is, then, how do we relate to a God who lives in this universe?  If you want more from Nomad, check out our website, and follow us on Facebook and twitter If you're looking for other people to share this journey with, then register on our Listener Map, and see if any other nomads are in your area.  Nomad can only keep going because a small group of faithful listeners help us pay the bills. "The Evangelical Universalist" was published several years ago.  The author claimed to be an evangelical Christian who believes that everyone will ultimately be saved.  He published under a pen name, but recently revealed his true identity as Robin Parry, editorial director of UK Christian publisher Paternoster. While Robin's views do not represent those of Paternoster, he tells why he has personally come to believe that the Bible teaches that everyone will ultimately be saved. Laurence M Blanchard, a pastor and author in California responds to Robin's arguments and raises questions such as "what's the point of evangelism if everyone will be saved?"
