Is hell eternal torment? In this video, Jordan has a conversation with Keegan Kidder to dive deep into the doctrine of hell, challenging the traditional view of eternal conscious torment with a compelling argument for conditional immortality. Through careful examination of biblical texts and theological arguments we present a fresh look at what the Bible really says about the fate of the unrighteous. This video explores the concept of conditional immortality, which suggests that only those granted eternal life will live forever, while others will face a final and total destruction. Whether you're a staunch supporter of traditional views or open to reexamining long-held beliefs, this video promises to offer a respectful, insightful, and enlightening discussion on one of Christianity's most debated doctrines.   Watch the video version of this episode here: https://youtu.be/apFg1C5WzvQ Watch more of our videos on the topic of hell: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlJNUrjZLBEpM3smgpS0XH4GhSLzMwAn-   Rethinking Hell Part 1: https://youtu.be/u4_kCteLMFk?si=WUOBZh7eERbV8UPO Rethinking Hell Part 2: https://youtu.be/apFg1C5WzvQ Rethinking Hell Part 3: https://youtu.be/IaMZibJ0kzY?si=0d_z4nEkszuaMONt   SUPPORT: You can support Great Light Studios and the making of these videos by becoming a monthly patron here: https://www.patreon.com/greatlightstudios or make a one-time or recurring donation to Jordan and GLS here: https://bit.ly/3nN2nYD Watch Jordan's videos answering the doctrines of  Calvinism: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlJNUrjZLBEq2FhrqzT-coMx-7nbls9Vw Watch my films here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlJNUrjZLBEp7tApoCOPhEw4F0BBQg-Gr Seek First: Freedom From Worry And Anxiety (Matthew 6:25-33) https://youtu.be/Cjbj1qOIzk8 PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/greatlightstudios YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfi2w6gJGj1jHdEk-e_b7pA TWITTER: https://twitter.com/JordanMHatfield INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/greatlightstudios FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/GreatLightStudios TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@greatlightstudios CONTACT US: contact@greatlightstudios.com

The Doctrine of Eschatology: Judgment and Hell Chris Hefner Three Overarching Principles: The Hebrew linear view of history means that the world is advancing toward a telos or end. We need to enlarge our perspective on the subject of what is to come because of the vastness of what has been. We would be wise to hold our eschatological perspectives a little less tightly than the other main doctrines of the Bible. General Order of Eschatological Events: Jesus' Return (Parousia)Þ ResurrectionÞ Final Judgment Þ Hell/Lake of Fire Clarifying Passages: Matthew 25:31-46—the eternal nature of blessing and judgment 1 Corinthians 3:10-15—the nature of the believer's judgment Revelation 20:4-15—the final judgment (Great White Throne) Theological Considerations: Who receives judgment and reward? Universalism, Pluralism, Inclusivism, Exclusivism. The questions of compatibility: Is everlasting judgment compatible with God's justice; with his love; with his victory; with his grace? Annihilationism—those who remain reprobate (in unbelief) are eventually annihilated utterly and do not live in judgment forever. Conditional Immortality—only those who believe are granted eternal life. Theological Takeaway: To ignore the biblical doctrine of hell is to misunderstand the holiness of God and/or to minimize the depth of human sin. Worship Takeaway: The doctrine of hell depicts the holy wrath of the one true God. It invites (demands) reverential fear. Evangelistic Takeaway: If we take the Bible to be true and authoritative, then we must pray and share the gospel that those who do not believe may come to Christ. This Writing was donated by Alfred Corduan Title: Human Destiny by Sir Robert Anderson Most articles by this author were gleaned from Plymouth Brethren Writings. Here is a clip from the forward by Alfred Corduan “Universalism” - the teaching that God guarantees heaven for everyone – has been promoted to one degree or another for millennia. For my part, I have summarily dismissed it my entire life as the wishful thinking of guilty people, failing the simplest of Biblical tests. In the last few years, I have suddenly had to deal with it up close and personal when several dear fellow believers came forward as having embraced it. Then, in the last year, a well-known “megachurch” pastor – Rob Bell – came out as a Universalist, writing a book called “Love Wins,” which catapulted him into the national spotlight. For me, something previously ignored has roared to the forefront as one of the most dangerous spiritual errors I have ever encountered. A Bible-based position that does away with the unspeakable horror of hell would capture the attention of any believer who has any feelings whatsoever for lost relatives and friends. Yet this hopeful friendliness covers the most insidious of poisons, one that, in its end, strips the fear of God out of the heart and the Savior and His unimaginable death on Calvary of eternal meaning. This is the oldest of lies - the Devil again calls out to the troubled heart of man as he did to Eve: “Ye shall not surely die.” Once the bait is taken, he has us and will destroy us.

Description Join us on our 60th episode for a special Q & A on the nature of Hell, the resurrected wicked and the immortality of the human soul!!! Your hosts, Tyler Fowler and Joshua Davidson are wrapping up our study on Conditional Immortality and Eternal Conscious Punishment so we decided to bring our two friends, Robert Wiesner (Pastor at Kenmore Baptist Church and Chris Date (Host of the Rethinking Hell podcast) finally back on for one last showdown!!! Josh and I begin the episode with questions for both Robert and Chris like “What set you on your journey with this topic?” and “What is missing from the other side that would convince you of the truth of your opponents position?” After brief introductions of the two positions, Chris and Robert nuance differences and similarities of their views of the immortality of the human soul, resurrection of the dead and eternal life. After an exciting back and forth, the two get into an exegetical debate on the content of Luke 20:35-36 and the fate of the resurrected righteous! After hashing out the details of the text we begin to wind down, and end the show with Josh raising one last theological question: “Is the ‘Image of God' retained in the resurrected wicked?”. Guess you're going to have to listen to the episode for the answer from both Robert and Chris on this one! Overall, as Robert put it after the episode off air “A lot of MEAT on them bones!” to which I wholeheartedly agree! On this episode of CSG, we invited Robert Wiesner to come on the show to discuss the traditional doctrine of eschatology and Hell known as Eternal Conscious Punishment! Starting with the Old Testament we reference texts such as Daniel 12 and Isaiah 26 as a starting point for ECP and work our way into the New Testament to really see this theology in it's fullness! We then discuss Josephus and the eschatological differences between Sadducee's & Pharisee's and the concept of “immortality” through universal resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. Revelation 14:9-11 is then focused on as Robert gives us a great explanation of John's imagery of God's wrath for individuals in this text. Then, to complete the picture, we jump right into Revelation 19:1-4 to see the system that is “Mystery Babylon” come to it's complete ruin. Much more is discussed in this episode including Revelation 21, challenges made to the Conditional Immortality view, typology, degrees of punishment, and an explanation of a Psuedepigrapha text from 4th Ezra! I want to personally thank Robert for joining us on this episode! I absolutely had a blast preparing for this and cannot wait until Chris Date joins Robert and I on 7/23 to hash out the arguments made in this episode and more I'm sure that will be raised! May God bless this discussion and may fruit and edification come forth from it! Dr. Will Ryan, Pastor Matt, and Jana examine the Conditional Immortality/Annihilation view of hell. We look at the Biblical and philosophical arguments and then the strengths and weaknesses. Conditional immortality states that immortality is not the default position of humans in this view. Adam and Eve’s life depended upon eating from the tree of life the eternal life of humanity is in eating from the true tree of Life – Jesus. • Conditional Immortality has an extremely strong case biblically. It connects the punishment for sin and the rejection of God from beginning to end in the Bible.  Conditionalists (CI) don’t have to reinterpret death, second death, destruction, perish, and more to mean separation or torment. They let words mean what they normally mean.  Jesus’ death on the cross actually makes sense in a substitutionary atonement model with CI VS ECT. Jesus actually experiences and overcomes the wages of sin… DEATH (Not eternal torment).  In the conditionalist view God actually conquers sin and eliminates it from the cosmos.  Conditionalist do not fall into the platonic views of the soul being immortal that many in the early church fell into but stick to the Hebrew view that goes back to the beginning. If we are immortal by nature then Hell is not really a punishment but a choice of location, instead of the continual biblical motif of choosing life or death.  In the apostolic writings there is never a mention of Hell as eternal torment. In the gospel presentations in Acts, Hell is never mentioned. Judgement and the one who judges is. When the Apostles refer to this judgement it is never eternal torment.  In CI the punishment fits the crime and God says that he values proper scales when it comes to justice. CI seems to be more just in this way than traditionalism.  CI’s version of final judgement is both just and merciful. Unending torment seems to go against the character of God who says over and over that “His anger only last for a moment, but favor lasts for a lifetime”. The traditional view has God’s wrath lasting forever which is nowhere in scripture.  CI fits more with the character of God than ECT overall. A God who respects free will, is merciful, but will let people have what they desire and if that is their own will then God is saddened but obliged to remove his sustaining hand and let them cease to exist.

Annihilationism is the belief that the wicked will cease to exist after the final judgment. Conditionalism goes an extra step beyond annihilationism to clarify why mankind can not survive eternally in the lake of fire. In this episode, Chris Date comes on the show to explain why the wicked will be annihilated at the final judgment because of the conditional state of eternal life. His uses the resurection of the dead, the nature of humanities mortality, and the atonement of Jesus Christ to articulate his possition of conditionalism. This is going to be a fun episode, hope you guys enjoy. ____________________________________________________________________________________Help Support The Channel through a one time gift or a monthly contribution.https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=GC2Z86XHHG4X6____________________________________________________________________________________

In this different sort of podcast, Preston moderates a discussion between Chris Date (Trinitarian) and Sam Adams (Unitarian) about whether God is three in one or just one. Sam argues that there’s one God and Jesus and the Spirit are not that God, while Chris Date believes that God is Trinity--three persons of one divine essence. And both argue from the text of Scripture for their view.Sam Adams is a born and raised Biblical Unitarian but has attended trinitarian evangelical churches for the last 12 years. He has a bachelors degree from Cornell University and a masters degree from Harvard University both in biostatistics. He works in data science and artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry. He has published many peer reviewed articles on subjects completely unrelated to theology. He is a highly-engaged and self-educated lay person on the topics of Unitarianism, Trinitarianism, church history, and related theological subjects. While he has never been called a world expert in anything, he enjoys having meaningful discussions on the topic of Christology and helping bridge together Christians across what seems like an unbridgeable gulf. You can see more of his conversation on this topic on his youtube channel "transfigured" which through honest dialogue seeks to see Christ for who he truly is.Chris Date is a well-known evangelical Christian author, editor, blogger, podcaster, debater, and speaker. Representing a global movement known as Rethinking Hell, he specializes in the areas of Hell and Conditional Immortality. As an expert on these topics, Chris has been interviewed in such secular media outlets as the New York Times, National Geographic, and NPR. He has debated no less than the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Dr. Albert Mohler, and been interviewed for the popular One Minute Apologist video series. He helped to frame the Statement on Evangelical Conditionalism, and he is passionate about making the case for conditionalism while fostering unity among evangelical Christians on this controversial yet very important topic.Support PrestonSupport Preston by going to patreon.comConnect with PrestonTwitter | @PrestonSprinkleInstagram | @preston.sprinkleCheck out his website prestonsprinkle.comIf you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review.

After my own study in the Bible on this subject, listening to many debates (some Chris was part of), and reading books on the subject, I came to the same conclusion as Chris; that the position, known as "Conditional Immortality" (aka "Annihilationism"), best represents the biblical view of hell. Some have chosen to call this annihilationism, in short, we are discussing if hell is eternal conscious torment as it has been portrayed by media and the church, Or his Hell a place where people cease to be?Jordan will also be responding to some of the objections to conditionalism. ____________________________________________________________________________________Help Support The Channelhttps://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=GC2Z86XHHG4X6____________________________________________________________________________________ACADEMIC RESOURCES ON CONDITIONALISM The Fire That Consumes: A Biblical and Historical Study of the Doctrine of Final Punishment, 3 ed. by Edward William Fudge https://www.amazon.com/Fire-That-Consumes-Historical-Punishment/dp/1504029348Rethinking Hell: Readings in Evangelical Conditionalism Edited by Christopher Date, Gregory Stumphttps://www.amazon.com/Rethinking-Hell-Readings-Evangelical-Conditionalism-ebook/dp/B00K6Y48L2/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?keywords=Rethinking+Hell:+Readings+in+Evangelical+Conditionalism+Edited+by+Christopher+Date,+Gregory+Stump&qid=1569282964&s=books&sr=1-1-fkmr0____________________________________________________________________________________ACADEMIC RESOURCES ON TRADITIONAL POSITIONHell Under Fire: Modern Scholarship Reinvents Eternal Punishment 2004 Editors (Christopher W. Rethinking Hell contributor Chris Date recently presented a paper at Lloyd Strickland's and Andrew Crome's conference, "Imagining the Last Things: Eschatology and Apocalypticism, 1500-Present." Chris's paper, "An Unquenchable Doctrine: The Tenacity of Conditional Immortality in Recent History," outlines the history of conditionalism since the Reformation and its increasing popularity despite attempts by traditionalists to stamp it out, and the evolution of the doctrine of eternal torment into something much more moderate than would be recognizable to Christians of the past.
