But behind the polished branding and calls for civility lies a different story. In this video, we pull back the curtain on the real behavior coming from the frontman of Rethinking Hell. From calling arguments "stupid," to accusing fellow believers of slander, blocking anyone who dares to disagree, and even shouting on camera — the contrast between message and method is too loud to ignore. This isn't about theology. This is about integrity.

This episode dives into the debate between the annihilationist view (also known as 'conditional immortality') and the traditional 'eternal conscious torment' perspective on hell that has been highlighted among scholars for years. Dr. Al Mohler, Former President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, strongly opposes the annihilationist view, a stance he elaborated on in his daily podcast, The Briefing. On the other side we have Chris Date, a co-founder of Rethinking Hell, who argues in favour of the annihilationist perspective, a belief he adopted after extensive biblical study. The debate delves into scriptural interpretations and examines whether academic scholarship is actually shifting away from the traditional view of eternal torment in favour of an end of all ends. In this episode, Brian and Chad interview Chris Date about his view on conditional immortality, which is the idea that the final punishment of the wicked is death and total destruction rather than eternal conscious torment. Chris provides an overview of the two contrasting views and shares his journey of how he became convinced of annihilationism after originally believing in eternal conscious torment. He then dives into key biblical texts that are often used to argue for eternal torment, such as Mark 9:48, Matthew 25:46, Revelation 14:9-11, and Jude 7, demonstrating how these passages can actually better support conditionalism. Chris also makes a concise case for his view by looking at biblical evidence on immortality, the vision of eternity, substitutionary atonement, and the fate of the wicked described as death and destruction. For more resources from Chris on this topic, check out the Rethinking Hell website www.rethinkinghell.com and YouTube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@RethinkingHellas well as Chris' personal website at https://chrisdate.info While Chris hopes listeners will consider his perspective, his ultimate desire is for unity in the body of Christ despite differences on this non-essential doctrine.================================We appreciate your feedback. If you're on TWITTER, you can follow Chad @TBapologetics.You can follow Brian @TheBrianAutenAnd of course, you can follow @Apologetics315If you have a question or comment for the podcast, record it and send it our way using www.speakpipe.com/Apologetics315 or you can email us at podcast@apologetics315.com
Does the book of Revelation teach the traditional, eternal conscious torment view of hell? In this video we examine many of the key passages in Revelation that are often used as support texts for ECT and look at the complex imagery and symbols used throughout this enigmatic book to demonstrate why it should not be used to endorse the concept of eternal punishment. Is hell eternal torment? In this video, Jordan has a conversation with Keegan Kidder to dive deep into the doctrine of hell, challenging the traditional view of eternal conscious torment with a compelling argument for conditional immortality. Through careful examination of biblical texts and theological arguments we present a fresh look at what the Bible really says about the fate of the unrighteous. This video explores the concept of conditional immortality, which suggests that only those granted eternal life will live forever, while others will face a final and total destruction. Whether you're a staunch supporter of traditional views or open to reexamining long-held beliefs, this video promises to offer a respectful, insightful, and enlightening discussion on one of Christianity's most debated doctrines. One of the more common Christian slogans you might see plastered upon shirts, bracelets, or other paraphernalia is "Make Heaven Crowded." A nice thought, to say the least! But if that should be our ambition, shouldn't it be God's, as well? If God wants all people to be saved, why aren't they? Why isn't heaven not just crowded... but overcrowded? For a select but growing number of theologians, the answer is that, yes, it will be! Universalism is a position that has seen a recent resurgence, even among Evangelicals, and holds that everyone will (eventually) come to know Christ and be redeemed, though some might have to go through Hell (literally) to get there. And here to defend the position is Dr. Robin Parry, one of the world's foremost experts and defenders of the position. His book, The Evangelical Universalist, was the title that helped to revitalize the position, though it was one he had to publish anonymously at first due to the provocative nature of the subject! Hear about this and much more on the final episode of our Rethinking Hell series!

Hell is the absence of God's presence... right? Many are taught that. It seems to make sense, to some degree. If we reject God, He rejects us. But is that what the Bible actually teaches? Here with us today to offer a startling and Biblically-founded model of Hell is Dr. Zachary Manis. He suggests that Hell isn't caused by God's absence but by God's presence! If that sounds astonishing, confusing, or interesting in the slightest, this is the episode for you.
Hell is likely the least favorite topic of most Christians. It's often times considered one of the hardest doctrines to swallow. The idea of an eternity of misery separated from God seems horrendous, so it's no wonder we often like to avoid it. But there is a certain segment of Christians who believe we have gotten Hell wrong. In fact, they think the Bible portrays a very different image of Hell. Hell, they argue, isn't a place of unending suffering but simply nonexistence. In other words, the fate of the unredeemed is less like Dante's Inferno and more like just ceasing to exist altogether. Here to defend this view from a Biblical standpoint is Chris Date, one of the foremost defenders of the view often called Annihilationism.
Due to the common idea that to be a conditionalist you must believe in soul sleep (see carm.org's refutations of conditionalism) or a physicalist (soul and body are a united whole and never separate) I have asked William to join me in discussing how dualists think of Hell and the soul. William contributes to Rethinking Hell and is writing a paper on a conditionalist reading of Revelation with Chris Date. John Tancock has a lot of experience with evangelism and apologetics and has been engaging with both since his late teens. He has contributed to a number of apologetics leaflets and written articles for Premier Christianity and appeared on Premier Radio. He headed up the Rethinking Hell conference in London in 2016. He is a fascinating bloke as can be seen in his Premier blurb: 'JT' was born in a pub, has led and planted a number of churches and has worked in apologetics since his teens. He regularly travels to Zambia, where he indulges himself in Bible teaching and his love of ants (yes, ants). This conversation is about JT's Christian walk, how his view on hell has impacted his faith and relationship with other Christians. We will also look into how hell impacts evangelism and apologetics. (book)What's The Truth about Heaven & Hell? (book)Summary (McGuiggan):... What have we seen in this book? The central thrust is comfort and assurance of ultimate triumph. In its unique way, the book told of a coming and terrible storm... We saw that the heart of the universe is a heavenly throne! That God and the Lamb rule -- not Italy! We saw the seals reveal, the trumpets warn and the bowls punish in a full and complete way. We saw the saints sealed against the coming fury upon the ungodly -- the world, piece by piece, attacked; her seas bloodied as well as her water supplies; her commerce was ruined and her armies defeated while their property was invaded; her gods were punished while her society ran riot in decadence. We saw that the church under the heel of the oppressor and the witnesses preaching in sackcloth, while death was awaiting them. But we saw the inner sanctuary hold and the witnesses loyally preach and, after death, vindicated in resurrection. We saw the people of God in a wildnerness, yet nourished while the Devil is raging on earth and in heaven. We saw Rome go under in blood and fire and smoke -- Rome in all her apocalyptic manifestations, from the civil persecution (the sea beast) to the religious pervert (the earth beast). The God of all power broils the sea beast; and the seductive power of a commercially successful Rome (Harlot) is set on fire by no man's hand and burns as Nero's fire never did -- eternally and thoroughly. We saw the end of Rome, pictured in the battle of Armageddon, and we heard the serpent thrash as he was bound and salted away for a thousand years, while the saints, living and dead, sat enthroned with their Lord!We saw the full story of those who died in the service of the beast. They were raised to no thrones but to die one more time, finally, in a lake of fire. We hear from God, through the "little time" of loosing the Devil, that all attempts by the Devil are doomed to failure, anytime and anywhere. And then we saw the picture of the Church of God. Consecrated in her service; glorious and honored in her reputation and appearance; unbeatable in her strength; intimate in her communion; a blessing to the world and beloved of her Lord. Her future secure and her triumphs eternal!
Here it is: we talk about hell with someone much smarter than us. Chris Date ,author of Rethinking Hell, and host of the Rethinking Hell Podcast, has also been featured on the debate stage against many well read theologians. Special Guest Announcement: Chris Date. Chris Date is Adjunct Professor of Bible and Theology at Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary and co-editor of Rethinking Hell: Readings in Evangelical Conditionalism and A Consuming Passion . A full-time software engineer, Chris believes theology and apologetics are for every average joe in the pews, and not just for pastors, philosophers, PhD's and the erudite in ivory towers. Formerly a traditionalist, he became convinced of the biblical view of final punishment over the course of a process which began when he interviewed Edward Fudge, and he has since defended the view in several debates and on Justin Brierley's Unbelievable? radio program on Premier Christian Radio UK. Chris is also a steward of the Rethinking Hell project. Yeah, that's off his website. We look forward to releasing it.

Bible readings: Revelation 21:1-8 (NIVUK) A new heaven and a new earth 21 Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,' for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God's dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.' 5 He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!' Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.' 6 He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practise magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death.' Revelation 21:22-27 (NIVUK) 22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendour into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honour of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Last week, we asked "what is the gospel?" We walked through the full-view of the gospel from Genesis to the Cross. This week, we take a look at the resurrection of Christ, at a Christian view of anthropology (do souls exist?), and the great Christian hope, the resurrection of all and the marriage of Heaven and Earth with Glenn Peoples of Rethinking Hell and Right Reason. Join us to celebrate Easter (or Pascha) together.
Chris Date of Rethinking Hell joins us to look at the topic of, well, hell. Is it a real place? Who goes there and why? Or does eternal destruction really just mean a person ceases to exist. Or heck, is everyone saved? After a presentation from Chris, our panel weighs in. This was recorded April 4, 2022.
In this informal debate, Chris Date defends Annihilationism and Keith Giles defends Universalism. Chris Date is a well-known evangelical Christian author, editor, blogger, podcaster, debater, and speaker. Representing a global movement known as Rethinking Hell, Chris has published three articles in academic journals and two books on the topic of hell, including Rethinking Hell: Readings in Evangelical Conditionalism, and A Consuming Passion: Essays on Hell and Immortality in Honor of Edward Fudge. Chris is also an Adjunct Professor of Bible and Theology at Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary. Keith Giles is a former pastor who abandoned the pulpit to follow Jesus and ended up founding a church where 100% of the offering is given away to help the poor in the community. He is the author of several best-selling books including "Jesus Undefeated: Condemning The False Doctrine Of Eternal Torment". He has appeared on CNN and was recently interviewed by USA Today, BuzzFeed, and John Fugelsang's "Tell Me Everything." What does the bible say about hell? Though many Christians believe hell is where the wicked suffer eternal conscious torment, this view contradicts dozens of scriptures about the fate of the wicked. To begin Joshua Sherman (not reformed) brings up a few things that left a lot of people feeling confused with in the James White & William Lane Craig Debate, namely the nature of exactly HOW free will coincides with the Reformed/Calvinistic understanding of determinism. We then take audience Q&A and wrap up the episode with an encouraging message, calling Calvinist's and Non-Calvinist's alike to unite under the Gospel of Jesus Christ as we build on the groundwork laid by our brother's and sister's before us! I personally think this episode answered A LOT of questions that were left unanswered in the James White/WLC debate and an intro to a clearer understanding of what Calvinist's actually believe about determinism and compatibilism was laid! This week, we are joined by Chris Date from Rethinking Hell. If you put "Conditional Immortality" into a search engine, you will be treated with pictures of Chris. The concept of Hell is a frightful thing and one that terrifies many. What if we've misread the scriptures? What if the final judgement is different than what we've been told? We will explore this with Chris and we hope you join us.
Chris Date & Josh Peterson debate the thesis, "Conditional immortality and annihilationism are heresies." Josh Peterson, of Providence Christian Church will argue the affirmative, and Chris Date, of ReThinking Hell, will argue the negative position. Description Join us on our 60th episode for a special Q & A on the nature of Hell, the resurrected wicked and the immortality of the human soul!!! Your hosts, Tyler Fowler and Joshua Davidson are wrapping up our study on Conditional Immortality and Eternal Conscious Punishment so we decided to bring our two friends, Robert Wiesner (Pastor at Kenmore Baptist Church and Chris Date (Host of the Rethinking Hell podcast) finally back on for one last showdown!!! Josh and I begin the episode with questions for both Robert and Chris like “What set you on your journey with this topic?” and “What is missing from the other side that would convince you of the truth of your opponents position?” After brief introductions of the two positions, Chris and Robert nuance differences and similarities of their views of the immortality of the human soul, resurrection of the dead and eternal life. After an exciting back and forth, the two get into an exegetical debate on the content of Luke 20:35-36 and the fate of the resurrected righteous! After hashing out the details of the text we begin to wind down, and end the show with Josh raising one last theological question: “Is the ‘Image of God' retained in the resurrected wicked?”. Guess you're going to have to listen to the episode for the answer from both Robert and Chris on this one! Overall, as Robert put it after the episode off air “A lot of MEAT on them bones!” to which I wholeheartedly agree! This will be the last installment (for a while anway ;) ) of our Conditional Immortality and Eternal Conscious Punishment series! Make sure to check out ALL our episodes on this topic with Chris, Robert and Ross Burns either in CSG's episode archive or our playlist on YouTube! God bless and enjoy! Rethinking Hell contributors Peter Grice and Chris Date join Darren Clark to continue a series of podcast episodes responding to Matt Slick of CARM.org. In this sixth episode of the series, Darren, Peter, and Chris continue discussing how Slick insists upon conflating physicalism and "soul sleep" with conditional immortality and annihilationism to erect a straw man easily burned down, as they began to do in the previous episode. On this episode of CSG we are discussing the human soul! What is the Biblical understanding of what we call the “soul”, is the soul immortal and what are the implications of the soul's immortality (or mortality) on Judgment Day?? I've asked Chris Date, from Rethinking Hell, to join us again on CSG to help give some biblical answer's to these questions and more! Passages from both Old and New Testament books as well as extrabiblical literature are examined to develope a more complete understanding of what ancient Jews and the disciples of Jesus Christ understood to be the truth concerning the fate of the righetous and the wicked, after in "the world to come"! Some of the texts expounded in this epidsode include: Genesis 19 Isaiah 24, 25, 26, 27 Matthew 10:28, 25:46 Luke 12:4-5, 20:35-36 Romans 6:5-9 1 Timothy 6:16 2 Peter 2:4-6 Revelation 14:9-11, 18:1-24, 19:1-3 2 Esdras (4th Ezra) 2:8-14 Chris and I also explore what the Bible means by the terms "immortal", "life", & "death", as well as dig into concepts of Greek mythology like "Tartarus"! Eternal Concious Torment arguments are examined as well and addressed in this episode! For anyone interested in the soul or conditional immortality, this is a great introductory episode to begin your study on this topic! MUCH MORE needs to be said and is in this episode but, Lord willing, God will arrange things in such a way that we will be blessed to continue this discussion in a part 2 episode or with a positve case for the Eternal Concious Torment perspective! A big thanks to Chris for participating and if you all are interested in more of his videos you can find his YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/rethinkinghell A.W. Pink quote from "Eternal Punishment": “...Gehenna is the place in which both soul and body are destroyed. "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna" (Matt. 19:28 [sic]). This passage is most important, for more than any other it enables us to gather the real scope of this term. The fact that the "soul" as well as the body is destroyed there, is proof positive that our Lord was not referring to the valley of Hinnom. So, too, the fact that the "body" is destroyed there, makes it certain that "Gehenna"is not another name for "Hades." In pondering this solemn verse we should remember that "destroy" does not mean to annihilate. Some have raised a quibble over the fact that Christ did not here expressly say that God would "destroy both soul and body in hell," but merely said "Fear Him which is able to. " This admits of a simple and conclusive reply. Surely it is apparent on the surface that Christ is not here predicating of God a power which none can deny, but which, notwithstanding, He will never exert! He was not simply affirming the omnipotence of God, but uttering a solemn threat which will yet be executed. That such was His meaning is established beyond the shadow of doubt when we compare Matthew 10:28 with the parallel passage in Luke 12:5: "But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: fear Him, which after He hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, fear him." This threat we know will be fulfilled.” Charles Hodge quote from his Systematic Theology Vol. 3 p. 759: "If the Bible says that the sufferings of the lost are to be everlasting, they are to endure forever, unless it can be shown either that the soul is not immortal or that the Scriptures elsewhere teach that those sufferings are to come to an end."
Does the parable of the rich man and Lazarus from Luke 16:19-31 teach eternal conscious torment? Does it teach anything about hell at all? I explore the context and the main point of the parable and as far as I can see, it says very little about God's judgement after resurrection (i.e. Hell). For further reading and sources go to https://www.thehellproject.online/post/luke-16-lazarus-the-rich-man-and-hell For deeper perspectives on the parable see here: Joseph Dear of Rethinking Hell writes more in the link in the description: http://rethinkinghell.com/2016/06/25/introduction-to-evangelical-conditionalism-luke-1619-31-the-rich-man-and-lazarus/. If you are inclined to think the parable should be taken literally, then there is a good and challenging read by Roger Harper, an Anglican vicar and Canon, here: http://rethinkinghell.com/2019/05/03/a-place-for-torment-in-conditionalism/ To see more of the backstory, go here: https://www.thehellproject.online/post/the-backstory I do this for free and am very happy to continue to do so to the extent that my videos will not be monetised if my youtube ever grows that big. Hell as a place of torment for eternal punishment. Is there really a lake of fire? TruthSeekah and Tom Shannon talk about Universal Reconciliation and explain how the concept of burning in Hell for all eternity is something adopted later by early church fathers and not a concept that Jesus taught at all. No matter how hard to look you cannot find Hell mentioned of in the Old Testament of the Bible as a place or eternal condemnation. Some of christendom have accepted this notition after the popularization of Dante’s Inferno of The Divine Comedy written in the year 1321. So with that beings said there is some contemplation of a punishment or learning ground after death that people may pass through but it is God will that none shall perish but receive everlasting life through the work that Jesus has purchased for everyone upon the cross of calvary.

Dr. Will Ryan and Matt interview Christ Date from Rethinking Hell on the "Big 3" hell texts that connect the word eternal and an act of punishment/judgement. Matthew 25:31-46 Revelation 14:9-11 Revelation 20:10-15 We examine if these texts affirm the traditional view or the conditional immortality (annihilation) view of Hell. Chris Date is Adjunct Professor of Bible and Theology at Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary and co-editor of Rethinking Hell: Readings in Evangelical Conditionalism (Cascade, 2014) and A Consuming Passion (Pickwick, 2015). Formerly a traditionalist, he became convinced of the biblical view of final punishment over the course of a process which began when he interviewed Edward Fudge, and he has since defended the view in several debates and on Justin Brierley’s Unbelievable? Radio program on Premier Christian Radio UK. Chris is also a steward of the Rethinking Hell project.
