What does the Bible really teach about hell?
A controversial topic in the discussion on predestination is that God predestined the wicked in history. These are the reprobate — people who could care less about God and were never going to be saved. This is very offensive to modern culture, so today we will see what the bible has to say on this very important topic. * 00:00 - Introduction * 06:45 - Eternal Conscious Torment* 14:39 - God's Fairness* 21:57 - Reprobation in the Old Testament* 41:07 - Reprobation in the New Testament* 1:07:55 - The Importance of Boundaries This is a public episode. Get your ticket for the Exiles Conference in Minneapolis! April 28-May 2! https://www.theologyintheraw.com/exiles26In the last few months, there's been fresh conversation about hell—sparked in part by Kirk Cameron's seeming endorsement of annihilationism. Of course, this sparked a flood of Twitter threads, and YouTube reactions about the nature of hell. But this isn't a new debate.Christians have wrestled with the nature of hell for centuries. While eternal conscious torment has been the dominant view in the Western church, annihilationism (or conditional immortality) has deep historical roots as well. And proponents on both sides take Scripture seriously. In this episode, I sit down with Paul Copan and Chris Date to talk through the biblical and theological case for their respective views. Paul is a philosopher and apologist at Palm Beach Atlantic University and the author of over 40 books, including Is God a Moral Monster? Chris is a theologian and the voice behind Rethinking Hell and Theopologetics, where he's written and spoken extensively in defense of annihilationism. If debates aren't your thing... don't worry. This one was super conversational and friendly. They disagree, but they're good friends and are confident enough in their convictions that they don't feel the need to attack or strawman each other. With the recent stir caused by Kirk Cameron and his change of perspective on the afterlife, it's important to review what the bible says on this topic. If we want to be biblical and sound in our understanding, we must go with what scripture alone says and not inject our man-made traditions and ideas -- regardless of how old -- into the reading, but rather read scripture plainly and also from the lens of those who wrote them long ago. So, what do the scriptures say? Today we will look at them very carefully. This is a public episode. A lot of the crybabies cry that I'm a Calvinist, because I believe in total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and perseverance of the saints. Was I unfair to the ECT position? In Part 5 of our series on what the Bible says about hell, we return to one of the most debated doctrines in Christian theology: Eternal Conscious Torment (ECT).In earlier sessions, I critically examined the biblical evidence commonly cited in support of ECT. In this livestream, I revisit that material with fresh eyes and cover one aspect of the position I have not yet addressed, "weeping and gnashing of teeth." We also revisit the Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man in light of some in-house pushback we received from last week's episode. What the Bible Actually Says About Hell, Part 5. That You May Know Him, Episode 285.

The conversation also touches on the debate between annihilationism and eternal torment, concluding with thoughts on the implications of these beliefs for understanding scripture and faith. In this conversation, the hosts delve into the theological debate surrounding annihilationism versus eternal torment, exploring scriptural interpretations and implications for the afterlife. They discuss the nature of judgment, the concept of hell, and the significance of terms like 'forever' in biblical texts. The dialogue emphasizes the importance of understanding these concepts in the context of faith and morality, ultimately questioning the nature of divine justice and compassion.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jt-s-mix-tape--6579902/support.Please support our sponsor Modern Roots Life: https://modernrootslife.com/?bg_ref=rVWsBoOfcFJESUS SAID THERE WOULD BE HATERS Shirts: https://jtfollowsjc.com/product-category/mens-shirts/WOMEN'S SHIRTS: https://jtfollowsjc.com/product-category/womens-shirts/JT's Hats: https://jtfollowsjc.com/product-category/hats/
Today we steel-man the Doctrine of Eternal Conscious Torment, the view of hell which states that all people who go there will be tormented unceasingly for all eternity. This is part 2 of our series on hell, in which we will make the biblical case for all three historical views of hell held by Christians. Our aim is to educate, not indoctrinate. If you follow along with us as we publish this series, you will be able to decide for yourself what the Bible teaches about hell. That You May Know Him, Episode 282.
Allie tackles the explosive hell debate ignited by Kirk Cameron in which he wades into annihilationism, which is a belief that sinners in hell do not suffer eternal torment but will eventually be forever destroyed. She contrasts it with the traditional view of eternal conscious punishment, exploring Scripture's imagery of destruction, balancing God's characteristics of justice and mercy, and referring to key theologians, such as John MacArthur, John Stott, Edward Fudge, J.I. Packer, and many more. At the end of the day, sharing the gospel to all unbelievers is the most important because separation from God is horrific. Today, we react to the reactions of many Evangelical Protestants who are disparaging Kirk and James Cameron for questioning the Doctrine of Eternal Conscious Torment. We also introduce the next series from That You May Know Him, a deep dive into what the Bible actually says about hell. That You May Know Him, Episode 280.
Recently Kirk Cameron had his son on his show to discuss eternal conscious torment as well as the doctrine of Annihilationism, which is the belief that the wicked will cease to exist after they face the judgement of God in the afterlife. Is the suffering in Hell eternal? On today's episode we take a look at a message Pastor Joe gave on the topic. He breaks down any misconceptions and arguments that may come against the biblical view of "Eternal Conscious Torment."
In this episode, I talk with Brian Recker about his new book Hell Bent and the ways fear-based theology has shaped so many of our spiritual imaginations. Brian grew up learning about hell and God in the same breath, and he unpacks how that fusion created a system built on binary thinking, punishment, and spiritual insecurity. We explore his journey from fundamentalism to evangelical ministry to a reimagined faith centered on love, liberation, and a vision Jesus preached. We get into Gehenna, apocalyptic language, why evangelicals cling to certainty, how fear distorts our understanding of God, and what it means to live as people who bring heaven to earth rather than create hell on it. This is a conversation about reclaiming our belovedness, deconstructing fear, and rediscovering a spirituality that looks like compassion, justice, and the radical welcome of Jesus.Brian Recker, M.Div, is a public theologian, speaker, and writer on Christian spirituality without exclusionary dogma. The son of a Baptist preacher and an alum of the fundamentalist Bob Jones University, he spent eight years as an evangelical pastor before deconstructing his faith to find a more inclusive spirituality. He now speaks about following Jesus without fear of hell on his popular Instagram account and his Substack, Beloved. He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has four children and a rescue pup named Maev.Brian's Book:Hell BentBrian's Recommendations:Reason, Faith, and RevolutionActsConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Welcome back T&J fam! This week we have another special guest; Hatcher Geary. Hatcher is a local children's pastor and long time friend of Josh. Hatcher has courageously agreed to come on the show to present his case for an eternal conscious hell. As we get started, we briefly define the three traditional Christian views of hell before letting Hatcher lay out why he believes ECT is the most biblically accurate perspective. We wrestle with some of the core components of hell theology and how our different views are informed by scripture. Along the way we try to find common ground and allow the bible to speak the truth we are seeking. Ultimately, none of us converted to a different view, but we all gain a better understand of each other's views. Feel free to send us your thoughts or questions at the email addresses below. We are also posting video episodes to our YouTube account, and shorts to Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Enjoy! tattoosandjesuspodcast@gmail.comHatcher@fbcgaffney.org

Dr. David Gushee returns to continue the timely discussion of his new book, The Moral Teachings of Jesus. Ken and David expand on the Golden Rule. Gushee's doctoral work at Union Seminary focussed on ethics and the Holocaust. His work on the horrors of torture got the attention of Christianity Today when the horrific American abuses against prisoners held at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay came to light. Christian military officials asked the magazine for guidance. In reponse, David was commissioned to write CT's extensive cover story. In it, he clarified, “the prohibition on torture in international law admits no exceptions,” and then offered an ethical treatise rooted in Jesus' teaching. Dr. Gushee expands on Jesus' emphasis on what we do over what we say - “By our fruit” we will be known. He points to the heavy implications that relate to money and wealth in Jesus' direct challenge. No one can serve both God and money. “Where your heart is, there will your treasure be.” It's a lively, insightful conversation filled with wisdom, humor and common sense - especially valuable for those sorting out the demands of toxic religion from the potent, life-altering teachings of the Rabbi from Nazareth. David Gushee - author, ethicist and global influencer - returns to talk about his new book entitled The Moral Teachings of Jesus: Radical Instruction in the Will of God. Professor Gushee, like Ken, interacts with many folks of all ages and stages who have become disillusioned with Christianity - particularly the evangelical version that has become identified with political conservatism. Often, while deconstructing religion, these same people will report - Jesus' life and teaching remain relevant and compelling. Ken takes the opportunity to ask some questions he's had for a long time: Why did my tradition focus way more on Paul than Jesus? Since the four gospels were written years after Jesus, how can we rely on them as an accurate account of the teachings of Jesus? Has the “Great Commission” in Matthew 28 been misrepresented and misunderstood to justify colonialism? Imperialism? To make the world like us? What about Matthew 25? Was Jesus influenced by the community at Qumran? Ken and Dr. Gushee review a collection of Jesus' teachings that are surprisingly relevant today. They include a review of Gushee's graduate school mentor, Glen Stassen's reading of the Sermon on the Mount, “no one can serve both God and mammon;” the “Golden Rule;” the house built on a rock; the rich man, Lazarus and “eternal conscious torment;” the woman caught in adultery; the Samaritan woman at the well, and more. Dr. Gushee finishes with a surprisingly powerful conclusion. SHOW NOTESThe Moral Teachings of Jesus: Radical Instruction in the Will of God Become a Patron | Ken's Substack PageSupport the show

Is hell eternal torment? In this video, Jordan has a conversation with Keegan Kidder to dive deep into the doctrine of hell, challenging the traditional view of eternal conscious torment with a compelling argument for conditional immortality. Through careful examination of biblical texts and theological arguments we present a fresh look at what the Bible really says about the fate of the unrighteous. This video explores the concept of conditional immortality, which suggests that only those granted eternal life will live forever, while others will face a final and total destruction. This week we're starting a mini-series on a more serious, heavier topic: four different views on hell. This week, we're looking at the view called "Eternal Conscious Torment." As we dive into our series on hell, we want you to have an open mind and search the scriptures for yourself. Evaluate your beliefs in light of Scripture. Oftentimes, we have assumptions about what we believe and throw around a few verses to support our arguments and don't give it a second thought. So, we want to encourage you to dive in for yourself. Also, let's remember the rules of hermeneutics (interpreting the Bible): Allow the clearer passages to help you interpret the less clear passages. Give consideration to the whole counsel of God. If there are 50 verses to support one view, and 3 to support a different view, then the first view has a lot more credibility.
The southern border crisis, Gaza, and untenable beliefs prompt Kemp and Fong to cut loose in a lively discussion. The podcast allows these two retired former pastors to share their genuine convictions without fearing losing their employment. Kemp shares his experience at the opening in the "Big Beautiful Wall," near the small town of Jacumba featured in this week's edition of 60 Minutes. Current headlines reveal that the do-nothing Congress has failed again to act. Funding is desperately needed to bring relief to border agents, manage processing, and stem the tide of out-of-control crossings. Fong takes the conversation to Israel and the unfavorable response to Biden's support for the Netanyahu government's "overkill" in the Gaza war. The two Kens review some theological assumptions rooted in long-held beliefs that are indefensible today. Fong has been asked to address his views on heaven and hell with a group of retired ministers and missionaries - it opens up a free-wheeling review of the two Kens' theological journey on the subject. Summary In this conversation, Derek Kubilus discusses the concept of sin as the refusal to love and the importance of understanding it in a broader context. He also explores the difference between purgatory and purgation, emphasizing the idea of refinement and growth in the afterlife. Derek shares his perspective on the salvation of those who have done harm and the essence of the divine in every person. He challenges the notion of eternal damnation and highlights the need to respect the pain of others while recognizing the depth of God's love. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the cognitive dissonance of eternal damnation. Takeaways Sin is the refusal to love, to include, and to make space for others. Purgatory is a Catholic concept of a holding period until one goes to heaven or hell, while purgation refers to the process of refinement and growth in the afterlife. The salvation of those who have done harm challenges our understanding of God's love, but it is a reminder that everyone carries the essence of the divine. Respecting the pain of others and acknowledging the depth of God's love can help navigate difficult theological questions. The idea of eternal damnation can create cognitive dissonance and contradict the concept of a loving God. And then, especially how this "hell" thing plays out in parenting (hint, it's awful). This conversation will pretty much get you thinking out of the box and free you from that box that has kept you afraid and small. After a travel break, Ken and Betsey reconnect to catch up on the headlines. Mitt Romney's announcement that he will not seek another Senatorial term included his opnion that "it's time for a new generation of leaders" to take the stage. It puts the spotlight on both the current President (80) and the former President (77) and other hangers on like Mitch McConnell (81), Dianne Feinstein (who is retiring at age 90), Bernie Sanders (81), Nancy Pelosi (83), Steny Hoyer (83) and Jim Clyburn (82). Betsey calls them "geriatric politicians." Ken remembers the concept of "mandatory retirement." The Hunter Biden indictment triggers a case of whataboutism. Mitt Romney's sage advice comes at an opportune time: no one seems to want the Presidential match-up that the polls are predicting. The conversation turns to a discussion of Ken's new Substack page and his essays around three books that take on a troubling doctrine. A professor, a psychologist and a philosopher all challenge traditional teachings about heaven and hell. Ken's biggest issue is with "eternal conscious torment." Betsey weighs in - and the two speculate about what another author calls "the great dechurching."Support the show

Will and Brian discuss the 2 main views of Hell: Eternal Conscious Torment (ECT) and Annihilationism (aka Conditional Immortality (CI)). We review the major verses for each view and discuss where we both have landed on this subject after quite a bit of study. Stay tuned for a hell of an episode!
The Burros of Berea are back in Giraffe Studio with our newest cast member (he didn't know that at the time), Josh Sexton! After a thorough study of the bible in regard to the doctrine of "hell" or eternal conscious torment, the Burros go on a deep dive thr0ugh the Old and New Testaments trying to understand the Hebrew word, Sheol, and the Greek words, Hades and Gehenna. For centuries the church has held to the doctrine of eternal life for the wicked, cast into a fiery lake and burning while conscious forever. However, does the bible actually teach this? Is eternal life a gift that is given to those who trust in Jesus? Or is does everyone have eternal life? It's a fascinating look into one of the most terrifying considerations of the after life. Dan Page changed his mind from believing and teaching Eternal Conscious Torment to Conditionalism. We discuss why.We reference a note that Dan posted on his Facebook page. You can see it here with some edits to fit in the description:“This rather lengthy post is primarily for my friends who call themselves Christians. ... Since the beginning of my relationship with God I've often heard people say something along the lines of, “the Bible says everyone is going to live forever in one of two places.” I'm now quite sure that's not at all what the Bible says. The primary picture the scriptures paint is one of eternal life (eternally alive & preserved) in heaven or eternal death (eternally dead & destroyed) in hell. I'm not trying to stir up discord or cause division. Nor am I saying that hell isn't real. Of course it is. Jesus said,“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)When we bring the most honest hermeneutic we can to the scriptures, being committed to letting them speak to us rather than us telling them what we think they say, that's when we find ourselves more able to discover what the truth truly is. No matter how long any individual, church or religious organization has believed anything, it doesn't make it right or mean it's true. I remember the cognitive dissonance with which I wrestled as I began questioning ECT. As I've continued to read & study the Bible being honest about what never seemed compatible with believing that love & justice would allow for let alone require ECT, it's come to this: doesn't inviting someone who never asked to exist to consider & respond to the good news communicated & confirmed in the gospel & person of Jesus Christ all the while having to include the reality of eternal conscious torment in a fiery hell if they refuse His gift of eternal life create its own cognitive dissonance? God is good & He is love & in His image He created every human being who was, is & will ever be? Yet the overwhelming majority of humanity will be tormented if not tortured eternally? Where, even once (yes, once), in the entirety of the Old Testament or the Book of Acts or any of the letters written by Paul, Peter or James does anything even hinting at ECT appear? ... If it isn't & someone's rejecting God because of it, then it's not God they're rejecting but a distorted & disfigured caricature of Him.There is no doubt whatsoever that the misinterpretation of scripture leads to the misrepresentation of God. While some will say that's exactly what I'm doing here concerning this, obviously I would beg to differ. The bottom line is that I am trying to expose as clearly as I can that which I've come to see is an absolutely humungous misunderstanding concerning immortality being something anyone has who has not yet received the gift of eternal life in Christ (Genesis 2:16-17 / Matthew 7:13-14 / John 3:16 / Romans 6:23 / 1 Corinthians 15:53-54 / 2 Timothy 1:10 / 1 John 5:11-12).Knowing that how we look at what we see very much influences what it is we see, I do have to say I see the scriptural support for conditional immortality far outweighs that for eternal conscious torment. May whatever the truth is always be our passion & prize. May we always be willing to say “I was wrong” about anything & anyone, including the Bible & God, whenever the need to do so arises. The best questions to ask about whatever the Bible addresses are what does this actually say & what does it truly mean? This includes being aware of context historically, culturally & geographically. It requires being willing & able to acknowledge & address the difference between metaphor, hyperbole, symbolism, allusion & imagery, etc. Is something timely or timeless? Is it a promise, a proverb or a principle / a moral, civil or ceremonial law / a commandment, exhortation or observation? Is a verse or passage primarily descriptive or prescriptive? What are the implications of the Old Testament being written in Hebrew & the New Testament in Greek especially as it pertains to how it is we translate them into whatever other language it may be that we happen to speak? If you are wondering about the veracity of conditional immortality, I cannot recommend these online resources highly enough. In this week's message, Pastor Chris continues our Hell-ology series talking about the view of Eternal Conscious Torment. This view of Hell has created tremendous fear, spiritual PTSD, and has wrongly become the center of the gospel message in the western church! Give Facebook Instagram Website
What does the word ‘reconcile' mean in the context of ‘all things,' when Colossians 1:20 says the fullness of God was pleased to reconcile all things to himself in Christ? For starters, the context indicates they are really and truly things – that is, the impersonal portion of the general Creation of which mankind is only a part. Moreover, 'reconcile' has a certain semantic range which is not so narrow as eternal reward for all, irrespective their faith in Christ in this life. But 1 Corinthians 15:19 talks about believing in vain, and if we hold fast, with regards to being saved. And that makes less sense if all will be saved in the end, albeit most after a period in Hell, as the Christian Universalist would say. Meanwhile, all being made alive and resurrected in Christ is actually about all being raised from the dead, either to eternal life in the New Creation, or else eternal conscious torment in Hell. That is, on the Day of Judgment, all must be resurrected to stand trial. But all things being subjected to the Son should be thought of as martial, of a piece with conquest. And the passage says “all things;” and that is distinct from “all persons.” Yes, all men are related to all things, since the Creation was not subjected to futility willingly, but eagerly awaits the revelation of the Sons of God – that is, we who are in Christ, who are the elect. I think there is a category confusion for the Christian Universalist, supposing that subjection of Creation generally implies restoration to glory for all men as created beings. Always in the Bible, unless I have missed an example, 'Creation' refers to the impersonal, and is as distinct from mankind as the Heavens and the Earth; though mankind exists on the Earth, or instance, and is made from the dust of the ground, he ceases to be the ground from which God made him when the breath of life is breathed into him by the Almighty. But where Paul says he is telling us a mystery, we do well to take note that the meaning may not be apparent or obvious at first glance. That is what it means for something to be mysterious. And if God gives us the victory through Christ, the passage does not say that God gives all mankind the victory in Christ, irrespective belief or unbelief in Christ. Notice in Romans 5 the frequent use of ‘we' and ‘our' throughout the first two paragraphs. That is exclusive language, and Paul is writing to Christians in Rome rather than to all Romans without exception. Yet here we also see Paul talking about ‘all' with regards to sin and death in Adam. And when Paul talks about the grace of Christ, he says it abounded for many. Yet he does not say it either did abound for all, or will abound for all. Rather, he says ‘for many.' But then Paul says the one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. And the use of the words ‘many' and ‘all' is set up or those who were first made sinners and then righteous, in the first Adam and the second Adam respectively. But those many and all who have been justified are the ‘all' contextually who had previously stood condemned in their sins, and otherwise would be condemned. They are not all men irrespective of faith in Christ. The hermeneutics of these passages must be seen as a street that is meant to be driven in one direction on when you are in a certain lane. That is, one could drive northbound in the southbound lane; yet we readily recognize, in context and by paying attention to the signs, that we are not meant to drive northbound in the southbound lane, and will have accidents if we try to anyway. In short, forever and ever must mean the same thing for the smoke of torment for those who worshiped the Beast and took its mark as it means for God living. So also, to deny the eternality of the punishment for the ungodly similarly undermines our confidence in the eternality of the promise of life for those in Christ. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support
In this episode, Rajat and I engage in some meta-commentary, responding to a YouTube response video ("Contra Green"). The response video by Original Win Productions features a panel of amateur theologians (John, Alex, Christian) defending the doctrine of eternal conscious torment against objections originally leveled by the atheist YouTuber and podcaster Emerson Green. Rajat and I deliver some counter-objections to their objections and close by watching some clips from Emerson's original video. Links to the response video and the original video, respectively, are given below. Note: For unknown reasons, Zoom failed to record about 10 minutes of audio/video around the 1:25:00 mark. I apologize for the jarring transitions there and elsewhere, as our conversation as a whole was interrupted multiple times. https://youtu.be/a5sejzBUuug https://youtu.be/iYXI9e8M6d4
Eternal Conscious Torment is the dominant view in the Church in recent history. Just like the other views it has biblical support and is the preferred view for most people. Whether this is because it is the most widely taught, and therefore we feel weird challenging it, or because people are convinced it is truly the most accurate view, it is one of the main three Biblically defendable views on Hell.
