Sylvester Stallone was not making it, trying to be an actor. So, instead of giving up, he tried a different path. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [ASAP Commercial Doors Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young. That's Stephen Semple sitting to your right, however you're facing your podcast listening device. As we normally do, Stephen whispered the topic into my ear just as the countdown thing was going, and I'm a little flustered and confused because I'm not sure what we're talking about. He said, "We're going to talk about the Rocky franchise." And literally, the first thing that came to my mind was Rocky and Bullwinkle. Stephen Semple: Oh, no, no, no. Not Rocky and Bullwinkle. Dave Young: And I'm like, really? That's an empire? Really? Stephen Semple: No, no, no, no, no. Dave Young: No, you're talking about Sylvester Stallone. Stephen Semple: I'm talking about Sylvester Stallone. Dave Young: Yo, Adrian, and all of that. Stephen Semple: All that stuff. All that stuff, yeah. That movie is almost 50 years old. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Came out in 1976. There's been five Rockys. There was, then, Rocky Balboa, there's been three Creeds, there's another Creed coming out. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: There's plans for a prequel to be done on one of the streaming ones. There's a spinoff that's being talked about to be done on Drago. Remember the Russian, the Russian fighter? Dave Young: Oh, sure, yeah. Stephen Semple: When you go to Philadelphia, there's the Rocky statue in Philadelphia of him holding his hands up near the stairs that he ran up. Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: And today, there is a lineup. There's a lineup of people to take their picture with that statue. And it's 50 years ago. 50 years ago. Amazing. Dave Young: Well, Sylvester Stallone, he's got to fund his retirement somehow. Stephen Semple: The story was first shared with me by Tony Robbins, and it blew me away. And I did a little bit of additional look into it like, is this an urban legend? And it turns out much of this is true, although some of the details, I don't know the exact numbers, but it is actually really speaks to Sylvester Stallone's determination and understanding and ability to get things done that I believe every entrepreneur needs to embrace and understand. Dave Young: Awesome. Stephen Semple: And that's why I wanted to talk about Rocky. One of the other things I want to talk about when it comes to Rocky, it won best picture, best director, best film editing. It's considered, by many, one of the greatest sports films of all time. Stallone was nominated for best actor, and also was nominated for best supporting actor in Creed. And is wild today that when you're at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, you still see people who run up the stairs and do the whole thing. Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: And it's that, the statue is there, and there's a lineup. There's a lineup to take your picture with the Rocky statue. And yes, I have a picture of myself with the Rocky statue. I had to do it. Dave Young: How long was the line? Stephen Semple: Actually, I was there during the week on a weekday, so it was not too bad. It was probably about 15 minutes. But here's the story behind Rocky that I find remarkable. So Sylvester Stallone found himself, like many in Hollywood, wanting to be an actor,

It's 1976, and audiences and the Academy are united in loving one man: Rocky Balboa. A nine film franchise spanning six decades has a small and simple beginning as a struggling young Sylvester Stallone writes himself into stardom as a simple palooka trying to prove to the world and himself that he can go the distance with heavyweight champ Apollo Creed. Erin, Claire, and Dan dig into Rocky's journey from nothing to stardom, where the Rockys went from here and what it tells us, which scene has NOT aged well, and the birth of the training montage (and what all other montages got wrong). Put all that together? Baby, you got a stew going (RIP Carl Weathers)! If you dig deep beneath all the Rockys, Rambos, Expendables and Cobras (I know, there was just one of those...so sad...), you might unearth this lost gem of a movie from 1981 wherein Sylvester Stallone teams up with Billy Dee Williams to blow away an international terrorist played by Rutger Hauer. I discovered this movie "back in the day" as they say, on the TV. That means all the violence and cussin' were edited out or skillfully dubbed, and it was still an instant favorite. The official theatrical cut isn't cut except for a lot of other stuff that got cut and the nasty cut Billy Dee takes in the face. You must be baffled by now, but it'll all make sense when you hear this podcast. There's some good music in there, too (none performed by a Stallone, whew!) This is a cool, throwback buddy-cop movie worth celebrating. What a team those guys are...GO, Rambo Calrissian!

Let the chaos ensue in the NBA Playoffs. Injuries to Devin Booker and Khris Middleton have flipped their series around as the Pelicans and Bulls tied the series heading home. Speaking of injuries, Luka Doncic hasn't played one second of these playoffs and the Dallas Mavericks are up 2-1 on the Utah Jazz. Golden State took Denver's best shot and still came out on top on the road in the Rockys while the Twin Cities witnessed a choke job like no other with the Timberwolves and Grizzlies. We've covered them out of order, but Rocky III represents our 4th time reviewing an entry in the Balboa boxing saga. This 3rd one is a lot of fun, but it's packed with flaws we couldn't help nitpicking. One big problem is that, despite the financial success and the movie's lasting fame, this one (and IV) has Sylvester Stallone at his least-interesting. The guilt-ridden champ has become corporate, well-dressed and even dull compared to the lovable underdog who had an original way of stringing words together in the 1st two films (and, interestingly enough, also in later Rockys). Talia Shire, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith & Carl Weathers are back once again to love and support Sly, but Mr. T was of course the breakthrough newcomer who's too busy being angry to feel pity for fools. So don't let your Stallion self get all civilized. Just fire up Eye Of The Tiger on your device, somehow beat your more-talented trainer in a footrace on the beach and then repeatedly punch a hard-punching battler in the face while we gab about Rocky III. You can find us on Twitter (@moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies) and you can also email us (scoringatthemovies@gmail.com) or find all our episodes on our website (scoringatthemovies@podbean.com).
It's the Return of the King :)Our Franchise champion, the one and only Jon Pegg, had a brief sojourn in hospital recently so we thought the perfect tonic for him would be another appearance on MT.And he was on fine form as usual. We got into a number of subjects, including what it's like running small hall shows post Covid, something Jon's doing with great success, and why it is that although everyone seems to love the Rocky films, they seem to be less keen on real life Rockys. As usual with the Peggmeister, it got deep.
This Thanksgiving Holiday we are blessed as Americans and have A LOT to be thankful for, no matter what the WOKE media may tell us. Scooter and Scorcho spend time with Rocky Sickmann - US Marine Veteran that was held hostage by the Iranian regime for 444 days spanning two Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. All of our guests have wonderful stories but Rockys story is one you won't want to miss. Born in 1957 in suburban St. Louis, Mo., Rodney V. “Rocky” Sickmann enlisted in the Marines in 1975 in the wake of the Vietnam War. He spent a few years in the infantry before joining the Marine Corps Security Guard Battalion (present-day Marine Corps Embassy Security Group), which watches over U.S. Embassies worldwide. In October 1979 Sergeant Sickmann was posted to the embassy in Tehran, Iran. Weeks later, on November 4, radical Islamic students stormed the compound and took Sickmann and 51 other American's captive. Over the next 444 days he and his fellow hostages endured privation and torture as officials sought their release. On April 24, 1980, eight U.S. servicemen died during a failed rescue attempt known as Operation Eagle Claw. To secure the hostages' release, President Jimmy Carter's administration signed an accord on Jan. 19, 1981, that among other concessions removed a freeze on nearly $8 billion in Iranian assets and included a pledge “not to intervene, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in Iran's internal affairs.” The next day, within minutes of Ronald Reagan's inauguration as U.S. president, Iran released the hostages. Soon after arriving home, Sickmann left the Marines for a successful career in sales. He now works for Folds of Honor, a nonprofit that provides scholarships to the children and spouses of U.S. military men and women disabled or killed in service to their country.Rocky is not hesitant to tell the world exactly what he is thankful for and one of his biggest regrets to this day!!!!!Schorcho is fired up in another excellent Airing of Grievances - wearing a mask, driving around in a car by yourself? What's up with that? Schorcho wants to know!Scooter and Scorcho wish you and your family a very blessed Thanksgiving holiday! Take a moment and reflect upon what you are grateful for. The length of your list may surprise you!Quick footnote - the disease that escaped Scooter in airing of Grievances was ZIKA!God Bless! USA!
