This week the Bad Dads take a pounding with The Bleeder (2016), the Liev Schreiber-led biopic of Chuck Wepner — the Bayonne brawler whose improbable 15-round fight with Muhammad Ali inspired Sylvester Stallone to write Rocky. Cathy and Todd discuss Rocky (1976), a film that feels more like a documentary than a traditional sports movie, set in the working-class neighborhoods of Philadelphia and made on a shoestring budget by writer and star Sylvester Stallone and director John G. Avildsen. The story follows Rocky Balboa, a small-time boxer and part-time debt collector living an almost invisible life, who unexpectedly gets a shot at the heavyweight title against champion Apollo Creed as a publicity stunt. At its core, the film is about Rocky trying to prove he's not a “bum,” developing his relationship with Adrian, and wrestling with the deeper question of self-worth over winning. It's a grounded, human portrait of people searching for meaning and wanting their lives to matter, even if they don't win. They'll continue with Rocky II next week as part of their Rocky Month series. Here's part one of another swapcast with ‘The Stinking Pause',hosted by Scott Phipps. This time round, Antony and Scott tackle the middle film of the original 5-film Rocky franchise (‘Rocky Balboa' aka Rocky VI would eventuallyarrive after a long hiatus), a subject dear to both their hearts. After the gritty 1970s fairytale that was the original film, followed by Rocky's redemptive rematch with Apollo Creed in Rocky II, the series enters a new decade and a new era. The man gatecrashing the Rocky and Apollo party is the unforgettable Clubber Lang, played by the utterly unique Mr T in the role that would soon after land him in ‘The A-Team' and make him a household name.In this part, your humble hosts talk about their historieswith the series as a whole and discuss the other films in the franchise. They then start ploughing through Rocky III, including Rocky's ‘friendly' charity match with Hulk Hogan's ‘Thunderlips' and the lead-up to his defence of his titleagainst Clubber. Rocky Balboa is apparently now a ‘civilised' champion. Send us a textReady for a heavyweight bout over the legacy of Sylvester Stallone? We gathered a lively panel to rank Sly's greatest franchises, argue his place among action icons, and unpack the line that still makes crowds cheer. From Rocky's underdog magic to Rambo's ferocious lone-wolf mythology and The Expendables' star-studded mayhem, we break down why the order Rocky > Rambo > Expendables just works—and where we disagree. We go deep on best vs favorite films: Rocky and Rocky II for emotional punch and performance, Copland for quiet, serious craft, and cult favorites like Demolition Man and Judge Dredd for pure joy. The conversation heats up when we stack Stallone against Schwarzenegger, Statham, Van Damme, Norris, and Bruce Willis. Is he the definitive action GOAT or the timeless bridge between eras? We also spotlight Tulsa King, where Sly's big-screen presence translates into a sharp, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt crime series that proves his range and endurance. Then we tackle the extremes: the reported 2.8% body fat for Rocky III, the risks behind the look, and how far is too far for physical transformations. We talk plastic surgery, aging on-screen, and why audiences connect with Stallone's blend of toughness and vulnerability. And yes, we honor the immortal line—“Yo Adrian, we did it”—as a cultural touchstone that captures shared victory and the soul of the Rocky saga.If you love action cinema, iconic quotes, and spirited debate, hit play and weigh in. Following their raucous sparring on the Deadpool & Wolverine livestream, Ian and Don return to the ring to review Rocky and Rocky II!Both films were recently released in a 4K box set from Warner Bros, and on the occasion of Rocky II's 45th anniversary, the guys decided to look at how this sequel stacks up to one of cinema's greatest sports movies.Three years after the iconic underdog story of Philly boxer Rocky Balboa swept the Oscars and captured America's heart, writer/star Sylvester Stallone took over from director John G. Avildsen for the follow-up. The result is a movie whose gloss and high profile put it in stark contrast to the original--which works thematically in its favor. In this review, the guys talk about Rocky as an institution dating back to their childhoods; how surprised they were to discover the richness of the characters surrounding the film's lead; and why many sports movies using the Rocky template fall short.Plus: Find out if there'll be a sequel to this episode!Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel, and check out kickseat.com for multiple movie podcasts each week!Show LinksWatch the Rocky (1976) trailer.Watch the Rocky II (1979) trailer.Get educated with Don Shanahan at Every Movie Has a Lesson…...And Film Obsessive...and the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast.Pick up the Rocky Ultimate Knockout Collection on 4K Ultra HD from Warner Bros!

After a replay of the climax of Rocky, Rocky II picks up exactly where the first film leaves off, with Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) taken to a nearby hospital after suffering serious injuries caused by the pummeling each fighter took in their 15-round contest.  Creed won the bout by a split decision, but the victory isn't so sweet, as many fans accuse him of helping Balboa along, while some even think Balboa should have been declared champion.  Contrary to what he said after the fight was over, Creed wants a rematch, but Balboa, at the urging of his girlfriend (turned wife in this film) Adrian (Talia Shire), wants to retire from the ring, suffering from limited vision in one of his eyes as a result of the repeated blows he took from Creed's fist.  Between Creed's constant taunts in the media, the inability to find a steady job, and a new house and baby to pay for, Rocky has to face a decision of whether he should risk his life and wife for the money and glory a rematch would provide.

Send us a Text Message.Ever wondered who Rocky Balboa's toughest opponent was? Join us as we unravel the legends and lore of the Rocky Balboa movie franchise with host Mike Bono and a stellar panel including Johnny "Fiddy" Falconi, Matt Altomare, Brandon Wiley, and Josh Himes. We kick off by reminiscing about our favorite non-Rocky boxing films like "Cinderella Man" and "Southpaw," before plunging headfirst into the heart of the Rocky saga. From iconic bouts to memorable characters, we debate and celebrate the moments that have left an indelible mark on both boxing culture and our hearts. In a lively discussion, we spotlight our favorite characters beyond the Italian Stallion himself. Josh and Brandon find inspiration in Apollo Creed's complex persona, while Matt pays tribute to Mickey's gritty mentoring style. Meanwhile, Fiddy emphasizes the significance of Tony "Duke" Evers' fatherly guidance. We don't shy away from critiquing Rocky V, agreeing its shortcomings make it the black sheep of the franchise. However, memorable comebacks and heroic feats in Rocky III and IV bring the magic back for Josh, who shares his admiration for their riveting story arcs. The episode crescendos as we dissect the best training montages and music scores, pitting the raw intensity of "Rocky IV" against the emotional resonance of "Rocky II." We also reflect on deeply impactful scenes, such as the gut-wrenching deaths of Mickey and Apollo Creed. Wrapping up, we delve into the real-life inspiration behind Rocky, focusing on the historic 1975 heavyweight fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner that sparked Sylvester Stallone's imagination. Tune in for a heartfelt tribute to a series that continues to inspire and uplift boxing enthusiasts and movie lovers alike.Stupid Should Hurt Link to my Merch store the Stupid Should Hurt Line!Reaper Apparel Reaper Apparel Co was built for those who refuse to die slowly! America's Underdog: John G. Avildsen's Rocky & Sylvester Stallone's Rocky II Jumping into the world of underdogs (last week's Popeye), Mr. Chavez & I look at one of the great American Cinematic creations - Rocky Balboa. The Balboa character's screenplay origin rivals that of the character's struggle in the film(s). From a real life adaptation of the 70s Muhammad Ali/Chuck Wepner bout, Stallone is legendary for having written Rocky and forcing studios to accept him as the lead in order to produce the film. It was an incredible gamble that paid of beautifully for Stallone. This week we look at the character, the role of the hero, Rocky's place in 70s Cinema, and the beginning of the legacy of the original film - and character - that would continue for close to fifty years. Take a listen as we look at these first two films and their importance in and for the American public. You can reach us at gondoramos@yahoo.com.
