It's fair to say that Gareth Morgan has led a varied life. Now the economist, businessman and philanthropist - turned politician has taken on perhaps his most curious project to date. The 72-year-old has turned his hand to creating a sculpture trail in the hills north of Wellington, with purpose-built works by local and international artists, some of which are bigger than houses. Nick James was given the opportunity to take a tour of the rich lister's unusual property.

A group of Wellington students have turned a page on history today, moving some of the last books into the capital's redeveloped central Library. Te Matapihi was forced to close its doors in 2019 when it was deemed earthquake prone but is set to reopen next year, after a spend of $216 million. Nick James reports.

A mental health helpline is calling on the government for financial support as it plans to cut back its services. Lifeline Aotearoa says its facing a funding shortfall, which means it will have to stop running as a 24 hour, seven day a week operation. It comes a day after a depression treatment centre in Wellington says it will be forced to close. Nick James reports.

A treasure trove of movie history has gone under the hammer in Lower Hutt, with items from a private Wellington cinema being sold off. Time Cinema was owned by John Bell who died earlier this year and featured thousands of items including human sized projectors and thousands of movies. Nick James reports.

There has been huge disruption to travellers in the capital with trains cancelled and planes not flying.

Associate Education Minister David Seymour has announced a sports school, the New Zealand Performance Academy Aotearoa will join the list of charter schools the government is backing. "A slap in the face". That's the response from a Resene worker over the latest pay offer from the paint company to its factory workers. Employees, unions and supporters gathered outside Resene's head office in Lower Hutt this morning. They say most workers are currently just over minimum wage - but they're demanding to be paid the living wage. Nick James reports.

Wellingtonians keen on a chair their favourite councillor once sat on or a light fitting that maybe shone on The Beatles can now head to the dump. The capital city's famous tip shop is selling furniture and fixtures no longer required in the 120-year-old Town Hall, which is undergoing a facelift. An overwhelming majority of New Zealanders support the government putting a cap on the amount councils can increase rates each year, according to the RNZ-Reid Research poll. In August it was announced a policy to cap council rates would be put before cabinet before Christmas. Researchers asked whether it was an idea people supported. Nick James reports.

The rain may have stopped but the cleanup continues for residents of the Tasman town of Wakefield, which was badly hit in the recent floods. Officials say the region is currently transitioning from a state of emergency and into recovery mode a task residents are warned will be long and hard. Nick James reports.

After a weekend of major flooding, Motueka Valley residents are already being warned to brace for yet another potential deluge later this week. The area has been one of the hardest hit by flooding after the Motueka River burst its banks amid torrential rain on Friday and into Saturday. Nick James reports.

A major Wellington City Council meeting partially born from its failed airport share sale will be held on Thursday deciding the fate of beloved community assets and water reform in the capital. Nick James reports.

The government's radical overhaul of pay equity laws is having its final reading in Parliament, with opposition parties fuming that the controversial reforms are being rail-roaded through under urgency. Workplace Minister Brooke van Velden on Tuesday announced the government will raise the threshold for proving work has been historically undervalued when making a pay equity claim. It's taken the best part of a decade but sod has finally been turned on Wellington's Golden mile upgrade. The $116 million dollar plan was part of the "Let's Get Wellington Moving" intiative before it was canned and is supposed to transform the capital's entertainment precinct. But some local businesses who will be affected by the upgrade say the timing is off - and one bar reckons it could be the final straw that sinks nearby businesses. Nick James reports.
