The boys are fed up as the NRL product continues its on-field decline in 2026, with the game's transformation into all-attack-no-defence proving to be a sore-point for NRL fans everywhere (this leads the boys to protest their NRL coverage this episode into a more condensed format). This episode is largely dedicated however to the upcoming State of Origin Series, with the panel selecting their Game 1 lineups for both the NSW Blues and QLD Maroons. In the NRL the Bulldogs lose 4-straight, Roosters win in controversial circumstances, Eels score first ever 3-point golden point victory, Dragons STILL winless, Fozball is in full-effect, Storm break their 7-game losing streak, and Panthers defeat a gallant Raiders in the game of the week.——TIMESTAMPS:00:00 - Intro07:50 - Panel Protest: “We don't like the NRL in 2026”18:30 - Episode Overview19:05 - Bunker Review: NSW Blues Game 1 Lineup Predictions57:52 - Bunker Review: QLD Maroons Game 1 Lineup Predictions1:11:03 - Bunker Review: The Sideline Story combined Origin team selections1:16:01 - NRL Round 10: TSS Tipping & Supercoach Comps1:21:38 - NRL Round 10: Overview 1:54:34 - NRL Round 11: Rapid Fire Tips1:57:55 - ATG: Challenge Cup Semi-Final Results1:58:33 - Outro——Click the link to follow us on Instagram, Facebook & TikTok, or to listen on your preferred podcasting platform:https://linktr.ee/thesidelinestoryrlpodcast——Hosted by Daniel Tassone, Nicholas Guild & Ryan Clarke.Podcast distributed to all major listening apps.Music credit ‘Chase' [prod. Ryan Clarke, Co-Founder, CEO, and CTO of Syntax Bio, is focused on solving manufacturing challenges in producing stem cell-derived therapies, specifically the process of stem cell differentiation. The Cellgorithm platform was designed to make differentiation an engineering problem by using a modified form of CRISPR to turn genes on and off in a specific, controlled sequence, reducing processing time from months to days and resulting in cost savings. One goal is to use AI and machine learning to build models capable of predicting optimal gene regulation sequences accelerating the discovery of new differentiation protocols and treatments for degenerative diseases. Ryan explains, "The key problem that we are focused on applies to stem cell-derived cell therapies. And so, just for a little bit of context setting, we use induced pluripotent stem cells or IPS cells. And about 20 years ago, when these were first derived, everybody was very excited because this is the platform where you could then have an infinite supply of stem cells to then make any tissue-specific cell type at will, theoretically. Fast forward 20 years, and there are finally some cell therapies in phase three clinical trials, but none are approved yet. And that just tells you that the development cycle for this modality is actually slower than the other modalities, like biologics or small molecules. And the problem is manufacturing in particular, or how do you convert the stem cell into the target tissue cell type for the process of stem cell differentiation? And so we are solely focused on making stem cell differentiation an engineering problem rather than a kind of dark art." "We have a program for type one diabetes that is making pancreatic beta cells from IPS cells. And we have also done some work in the musculoskeletal system. So these other cell types we focus on are more demonstrations of the platform technology, but we are interested in possibly co-developing those with other pharmaceutical partners, and that's the musculoskeletal cells of the hematopoietic system. And we've done some work on retinal cells as well, but we endeavor to make many other cell types. And our goal is to partner with the therapeutic experts in the area to develop these." #SyntaxBio #CellTherapy #CRISPR #StemCells #Biotech #RegenerativeMedicine #Diabetes #Manufacturing #Innovation #GeneTherapy #LifeSciences #Bioengineering #SyntheticBiology #CellProgramming syntax-bio.com Download the transcript here

The Benefits of Recycling Wind TurbinesWhile wind energy is renewable and non-polluting, the wind turbines themselves can create pollution problems. Now, scientists are creating wind turbines that can be made with less energy, but also create less waste because they can be recycled. This, of course, reduces impacts on the waste stream and provides a sustainable alternative to current wind turbines that are often extremely hard to recycle. Moreover, the new material requires less energy to create and mold into the desired output, subsequently reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions.Making Wind Turbines with Recyclable ResinNot surprisingly, even renewable energy resources also have environmental costs. For instance, when the life of a wind turbine ends (after about 20 years), it ends up in landfills. Moreover, as more wind farms are built and older turbines are taken out of usage, the waste burden is significant. Most resins also used in wind turbines require many nonrenewable resources and a lot of energy to produce. In addition, they do not easily degrade. This is why researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) started developing turbines from recyclable resin. They call the resin PECAN, and it is created with “bio-derivable resources” like sugars as opposed to the type of resin that has traditionally been used, which is not bio-derived and extremely hard to upcycle. Specifically, when the wind blades are unusable they are shredded to be used as “concrete filling”, which never biodegrades, while turbines made of recyclable resin can chemically break down within 6 hours.Benefits of Recyclable Resin Not only can PECAN withstand harsh weather, but it does not deform over time. Additionally, once the resin undergoes a chemical process called “methanolysis” it only takes 6 hours for the original carbon and glass to be recovered to be recycled. Moreover, the catalyst to harden the resin is also recovered and this means that it is possible for it to be used again (creating a circular waste stream). Moreover, PECAN produces “40% less greenhouse gas emissions and 30% less energy to make”.Challenges of Implementation There is a general lack of awareness of solutions like PECAN which strive to make our waste stream more circular, and without that awareness, it would not be able to make the large positive impact that it is capable of making. This is also one of the reasons why right now, wind turbines made out of recyclable resin proves to be more expensive, as there is not enough of a demand for it yet.Ryan Clarke believes that creating wind turbines from naturally occurring resources like sugars can be extremely helpful in waste reduction. Additionally, he emphasizes that larger deployment of this technology and increased awareness can lead to major cost savings in the long run. Editor's note: This podcast episode is the first in our Don't Call Me Resilient live event series. Our next event — "AI-generated influencers: A new wave of cultural exploitation?" is coming up on Wednesday February 5th in Toronto — and we'd love for you to be there! Attendance is free. Click here to learn more and save your seat! Food is so much more than what we eat.It is, of course, nourishment — the food we put into our body to fuel ourselves. It can be joyful, like the the smell of pancakes wafting through the house on a Sunday morning, or when loved ones gather around a feast at the dinner table. It can also be deeply personal and defining, connecting us to ancestral history, and cultural and racial identities. And it is also political — especially in the United States — which is the key takeaway in a new book by law scholar Andrea Freeman. Last fall, we sat down with Andrea to discuss her book in the first conversation of our new live events series from Don't Call Me Resilient. In this new episode, we bring you an edited version of that conversation. The book — Ruin their Crops on the Ground: The Politics of Food in the United State from the Trail of Tears to School Lunch (Metropolitan Books/Raincoast) — is a history of the use of food in American law and politics as a weapon of conquest and control.Freeman is a professor at Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles. Much of her work explores food oppression and examines how food and law policy are influenced by corporate interests, which disproportionately impact and harm marginalized communities. In her book, Prof. Freeman argues that food law and policy have created and maintained racial and society inequality in the U.S., which she says amounts to "food oppression."Our conversation was wide-ranging. We covered some fascinating topics, including the love/hate relationship with frybread, how milk became a symbol of white supremacy and how the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been using nutrition programs — including "government cheese" and the National School Lunch Program — as a dumping ground for unwanted agricultural surpluses since the Great Depression.Freeman's book also explains how this longstanding oppression has produced racial health disparities, resulting in higher rates of diabetes, disease and even premature death among Black, Indigenous and Latino communities.Although the picture is bleak, Freeman — a constitutional law scholar — provides some potential avenues for change, vis-a-vis reparations and the U.S. Constitution. In her concluding chapter, she writes:"Corporations do not feel compassion. Sickness and loss do not move them. Appealing to their humanity is not an effective political strategy. Looking to the White House and its agencies for solutions has yielded only temporary results at best. The Obama era saw improvements in school lunches that Donald Trump swept away during his brief tenure. Joe Biden reinstated stricter guidelines, and the corporations stood ready to beat them back down again. In the face of near-complete capture of the legislative and executive branches, it is time to turn to the courts."In addition to the podcast episode, you can read an excerpt from Freeman's book about frybread — a simple, versatile "comfort food" for many Indigenous communities that she says embodies the contradictions that have dictated Indigenous food and health in North America since colonization. If you'd like to stay up-to-date on the remaining events in our series, follow us on Instagram @dontcallmeresilientpodcast or sign up for our weekly newsletter. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at Another Story Bookshop in Toronto on Nov. 14, 2024.
