What part of no does the Christchurch City Council not understand? Because, despite us knowing what the answer would be, councillors yesterday voted in favour of putting another $15 million into the Anglican Cathedral reinstatement project, providing the government came to the party. And, wouldn't you know it - within just a few hours of the vote happening - Finance Minister Nicola Willis was already pouring cold water on the idea. Saying the government has already contributed $25 million to the cathedral and there won't be any more. She said there are many pressing infrastructure needs and the cathedral isn't one of them. She'll get no argument from me on that one. Not that anyone should be surprised. Because she said the exact same thing last year when the people involved in the reinstatement went knocking on the door asking the government to come to their rescue. Which she reminded us of last night. Saying: “In declining the cathedral's funding ask, we noted that the requested amount represented a significant contribution for a building that would not be owned by the public, and where public use could be limited due to the cathedral being a private, religious space.” Which was a polite way of telling the cathedral people, and now the council too, that it was no the first time, it's no this time and don't bother asking a third time. Because, as far as she's concerned, it is end of story. And fair enough, too. Because it would be obscene, given the state of the country's finances and the state of our infrastructure, for more taxpayer money to go into it. I even think it's obscene that the City Council thought it was ok to ask for it. How more tone deaf could it be? It's end of story too as far as Labour is concerned. Chris Hipkins has previously said that he doesn't think more taxpayer money should go into the cathedral. And local Labour MP Tracey McLellan said the same thing last night. Winston Peters, though, has already pledged $15 million if he's in the next government. But I can't imagine that being one of his non-negotiables in any coalition talks. So I think the cathedral can kiss goodbye to any money coming from any government. In case you need it, let me remind you of the numbers. The reinstatement project is $90 million short. They've asked for a total of between $40 million and $45 million from ratepayers and taxpayers. And, so far, somewhere around $90 million has been spent. More numbers for you: when the vote was taken yesterday, 11 councillors and Mayor Phil Mauger voted in favour. Three were against and two abstained. And there were emotional scenes around the council table, apparently. One report I've seen says Councillor Melanie Coker was fighting back tears. Saying she was torn about spending the council's surplus, because of the other things it could be spent on, but said the cathedral is the heart of the city. She said: “We had an earthquake and it kept us out of the city. It was like a break-up with the city that we knew and we never got it back again, so we need to heal our broken heart.” Councillor Andrei Moore was very anti. He told the meeting that he'd done a survey and, of the 1,200 who took part, 91 percent were opposed to the council funding the cathedral. He said he wasn't prepared to ignore what the people had said and, if he did, he would be breaching their trust. He said: “I don't think we are doing the right thing.” Never a truer word said. I'd like to know how you feel about the firefighters and their strike because I've gone from soft support a few weeks ago to very hard support today. What's tipped me over the edge is this kerfuffle around board pay. Frankly, it's one of the most tone-deaf things I've seen in a very long time. The board are set to receive pay rises of up to 79 percent. Meanwhile, firefighters have been fighting - and now striking - for 18 months just to get pay increases. Most of them sit somewhere above the minimum wage but below the living wage, which is not a lot of money to pay people who literally go into burning buildings. If these board pay increases go ahead as planned, the board chair will be paid more than any frontline firefighter on the base salary. One of those people is out there fighting fires and risking their life, the other is running the organisation - and running it badly. That last point matters. If Fire and Emergency New Zealand had a strong track record we could point to, a pay rise of this scale might at least be explained, if not justified. But this is a terribly run organisation. They've failed to settle a pay dispute for 18 months. Fire trucks break down so often it's ridiculous - and quite scary. Equipment is failing. They paid for a fleet of fire trucks that arrived in the country too small to be used for rescues because the equipment doesn't fit. They've spent $500,000 on a chief executive and $2.37 million on seven deputy chief executives. There are now calls for a review into Fire and Emergency NZ because the place is so badly run. I'm usually sympathetic to the argument that you need to pay decent rates to attract decent talent. But that's not what's happening here. This is simply a plan to increase the pay of the same people who are already doing a poor job running the organisation. It's unreal that this is happening. But in a strange way, it may actually be a gift to the striking firefighters. If they didn't already have enough public support, surely seeing the kind of outfit they're dealing with will generate some sympathy for their plight. Critique of Lar Russell and Social Media Success: Jason Myles introduced a detailed critique of the artist Lar Russell, relaying a friend's opinion that no one listens to Russell outside of children and that they are essentially a "dumb person" skilled at social media marketing of "cornball music". The friend's critique also mocked Russell's defensive "artist" response to criticism. Lar Russell's Business Model and Controversy: Jason Myles noted that Lar Russell has achieved significant online success and claimed to have moved 30,000 physical copies of an album using a "pay your own price" model, though Billboard disallowed it from charting due to incentives. The current controversy stems from a song that caused enough backlash for Russell to deactivate social media. The "Heaven Sent" Song and Mother's Rally: Lar Russell's song, in which they state that everyone, including Jeffrey Epstein, Donald Trump, and Adolf Hitler, is "heaven sent," caused the controversy. His mother organized a rally in Vallejo to support him, which Jason Myles viewed as counterproductive. The Misuse of the Term "Heaven Sent": Jason Myles and MToussaint discussed the literal definition of "heaven sent," which implies a miraculous saving. Jason Myles argued that Lar Russell did not understand the phrase and was likely attempting to use artistic license to speak positivity. Rapper's Defense of Artistic Freedom: Jason Myles played a clip of someone from the rally defending Lar Russell's right to freedom of speech, arguing that they only answer to God, not other human beings. MToussaint countered that this perspective is illogical and that there are indeed consequences for one's speech.

Today on Mea Culpa, we're revisiting a conversation from August with Army veteran, former congressional candidate, and democracy advocate Marcus Flowers. Together, we examined Donald Trump's accelerating authoritarian instincts, from secret meetings with Vladimir Putin and sidelining U.S. allies to weaponizing the Department of Justice against critics. Grounded in Flowers' military and national security experience, this conversation remains strikingly relevant as we break down how culture wars, fear, and political spectacle are used to consolidate power, erode democratic norms, and normalize retaliation against dissent. Birthright Israel is celebrating 25 years of offering a free 10-day trip to Israel to every young Diaspora Jew with the hope of fighting assimilation. The celebrations include a $900 million fundraising campaign. But, as Haaretz Jewish World editor Judy Maltz told the Haaretz Podcast, their traditional mission and "fun in the sun" marketing campaign have become deeply problematic, given the battering of the image of the Jewish state in the eyes of many young people around the world. Instead of unaffiliated Jews, Maltz said, the programs are increasingly filled with participants who are "presumably already very much in touch with their Jewish identity," begging the question as to whether this is where hundreds of millions in Jewish philanthropic dollars and funding by the state of Israel should be going. On the podcast, Maltz discusses the reasons behind the shift, based on more than 30 interviews with Birthright participants, and those who chose not to go. Many of those interviewees, she reports "feel very distant from Israel. They feel very uncomfortable with its actions, especially over the past two years with what's happened in Gaza." Maltz also discusses a new and different trend she has reported on: trips to Israel by young leftist Jews who choose to spend their time off providing "protective presence" in West Bank Palestinian villages menaced by violent settlers. "Being on the ground is really the only way to bear witness," she was told by the young Americans camping out in the villages. Read more: Has Birthright Become a Toxic Brand? Jack Horgan-Jones and Harry McGee join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics:· Ireland, along with Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands, will boycott next year's Eurovision Song Contest in protest of Israel's participation. RTÉ said in a statement on Thursday that it would be “unconscionable” for Ireland to partake in the event given the “appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there”.· Far more contentious was the proposal to rename Rathgar's Herzog Park in south Dublin. Named in honour of Belfast-born Chaim Herzog, Israel's president from 1983 to 1993, who spent his early childhood in Dublin. Perhaps including the Irish-Jewish community in the process might have dampened a lot of the controversy that has erupted this week.· Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was in Ireland this week, but it was drones more than diplomatic ties that made the headlines. It exposed the gaps in our national security, especially with Ireland holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from next July, when a lot of state leaders will be visiting these shores.· And will the Government's new infrastructure plan to accelerate the delivery of vital projects bear fruit before the next general election? Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· Patrick Freyne's continuing vendetta against Kevin the Carrot, a row over state pensions could destabilise Germany's new coalition, and the sudden death of ‘low-key national treasure' Hugh Wallace.
