Pride in being an independent artist has definitely grown recently, but alongside that has also developed a doubt and frustration with standard record label practice. Do artists today still need record labels? Are record labels really trying to trick artists? How do we even begin to look at a record deal? All of these questions are being discussed in this episode with Bucky Driedger, Label Manager at Birthday Cake Records and artist, engineer, booking agent, and more. Over an impressive career of writing, building, touring, and leading, Bucky sees the music industry from multiple perspectives - a strength and muscle he's leveraging as he steps into his latest role to help build the careers of other artists. Groundbreaking is a FRNDLY original podcast highlighting corners of the music industry to explore the creative forces moving it forward. As we wrap up 2022 - and our second year on the air - it is time for us to look back on the year that was! A special thank you to all the amazing guests we had this year and an extra special thank you to Ian Blurton, Bucky from Royal Canoe, Abigail Lapell, Dave from the Golden Dogs, and Manfred from Elephant & Stars for sharing with us some of their favourite albums for 2022. Listen in to find out our favourite moments, our favourite records of the year, and why it is that Darryl Hall topped Dave's favourite singles of the year! That's right, I said Darryl Hall.
With this week's pick, Beck makes it to a very special club (the only other artist in the club is David Bowie) here at the Sound Affect: The second album club. Like Beck himself, Winnipeg's Royal Canoe has made a career of pushing the line of contemporary indie rock and pop. Lush production and musicianship are cornerstones of this album and have proven a cornerstone of Royal Canoe. So, it should come as no surprise that a band like this would choose Beck's seventh album, 1999's Midnite Vultures.
The Road The Stage returns this week with our Matt Peters of Royal Canoe episode! Royal Canoe are heading out on some tour dates, including an April 15th appearance at Bo's Bar & Stage, so Patrick Bateman and Peter Michael's check in with Matt before the big night! In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home, I was joined by Jeff Sinclair. Jeff, from Winnipeg, Canada, spent the best part of a decade in Seoul, South Korea, before returning back to Winnipeg at the end of 2017. As well as getting into Jeff's Expat Journey, we also touch on how he got into improv and the stand-up comedy scene. Working as a founding member of the Stand-Up Seoul organisation, taking comedy shows on the road in South Korea - with special mentions for Expat outposts such as Pohang and Gumi - all this and the best gravy he's ever had...What's not to like? What are some of the differences between audiences in Canada and South Korea? Does material work in both places? Who're the best hecklers? Jeff tells us more… What does the ‘expat experience' mean to Jeff and why you should give it a try...if you're so inclined. Pub quizzes, soju stories and working on the same bill as - and I quote - An R'n'B sensation from the 1980's… Jeff's Top 5 includes Black Pink, Royal Canoe, The Guess Who, and the craft of joke telling! It’s the 2 year anniversary of That Awful Sound! For this special episode we revisit New Found Glory’s lovesick, middle school anthem “Dressed to Kill” and its cringey video featuring a y2k-era nice-guy stalker lusting after an equally psychotic Rachel Leigh Cook. To commemorate the 2-year anniversary we dive deeper than ever into our horrible fashion choices, including fake piercings made from household items, hot topic socks worn thin, and temporary tattoos purchased FAR too late in life. We also recap our favorite albums of the year, including Angel Du$t’s “Rock The Fuck On Forever,” Helms Alee’s “Stillicide,” Creative Adult’s “Fear of Life,” Dinosaur Jr’s “Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not,” BADBADNOTGOOD’s “IV,” Nocturnal Habits’ “New Skin For Old Children,” Solange’s “A Seat At The Table,” Field Music’s “Common Time,” Autolux’s “Pussy’s Dead,” and Royal Canoe’s “Something Got Lost Between Here and The Orbit”
Backstage at the Royal Canoe show was a bit of a madhouse as all six members prepared for the show. Those 12 hands become a well-oiled machine onstage to execute this Winnipeg genre-smashing band's weird and wonderful songs, but in the green room six band members plus beer quickly becomes a party. Lead vocalist Matt Peters and I left the busy backstage area at Fortune Sound Lounge and went for a bit of a walk on a nice summer evening. We ended up at Vancouver landmark Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, which was a perfect place for a chat. While Matt and I enjoyed the tranquility of the first Chinese or "scholars" garden built outside of China, we did the interview. Here's a few of the things we chatted about. What it's like to describe your musical genre to border guards (and why this can cause trouble). How songwriting is like group therapy. Getting your gear stolen while on tour and finding it in your heart to forgive thieves. Approaching songwriting like hip hop producers. What my favorite Royal Canoe song "Bathtubs" is about--one of the best song origin stories ever! What piece of equipment is The band's secret weapon. Listen! Tracks played on the show... 1) Royal Canoe, Today We're Believers (2013) "Bathtubs" 2) Royal Canoe, Today We're Believers (2013) "Button Fumbla" 3) Royal Canoe, Today We're Believers (2013) "Today We're Believers" 4) Royal Canoe, Today We're Believers (2013) "Birthday" ALL songs CANCON
