Jason Segel has played a lot of funny characters in turmoil. Whether that's as a young person in the throes of angst in “Freaks and Geeks,” or as someone recently dumped while on a Hawaiian vacation like in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” He keeps that trend going in the new Apple TV+ series, “Shrinking,” where he plays a therapist who's dealing with his own tragedy. Jason tells Tom about the ‘magical melancholy,' in his roles and why he left L.A. after the massive success of "How I Met Your Mother." On their latest EP, “I'm Good HBU?” West coast rappers Snotty Nose Rez Kids have cemented themselves as one of the buzziest homegrown groups in Canadian hip hop. Snotty Nose Rez Kids break down the EP and look back on how their deep friendship led to a perfect musical partnership.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Taabu, Shad - Red Sky at Night - Remix a 2022 single on Distorted Muse. Snotty Nose Rez Kids are a Polaris and Juno Award-nominated indigenous hip hop duo that are beacons amongst their community for addressing the generational trauma affecting indigenous people with wit, humor, and bars for days. Their most recent album Life After dropped in 2021 but recently they unveiled a remix of standout track “Red Sky at Night” featuring veteran emcee Shad and producer Taabu. While the original was a vibey late-night track that showed off the duo's dexterous verbal ability and is absolutely incredible on its own, the remix is a fiery hard-hitting journey meant to melt faces. Shad's gracious opening verse sets the tone before Yung Trybez and Young D speak their truth, “Rez Kids on that red carpet /Tell the homies that this feature is free /Get best bargain like red target, all love.” Turns out, Shad was actually supposed to be on the original version of the track but submitted his verse too late. “He showed us mad love when he heard it,” says SNRK to Complex of Shad. “...and sent us a verse back a little late when it came to getting it on the original [song], but that's what remixes are for! His verse was recorded before we even thought about ours, and he set the damn bar!” Snotty Nose Rez Kids were featured on an episode of Sound & Vision last year to discuss the change they want to be in their community. Check it out and watch the visualizer for “Red Sky at Night (Remix)” at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of Pop Music For Smart People I am featuring Indigenous music artists from across the globe. The artists being featured today are Otyken, The Halluci Nation, UUTAi, Olox, Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Electric Fields. All of these Indigenous artists are creating music that infuses the traditional sounds of their tribes and communities with current music sounds and genres such as edm, pop music and house music. These artists are implementing cultural vocal techniques such as throat singing and chanting as well as performing with traditional Indigenous instruments such as animal hide drums, wooden flutes and whistles and the jaw harp. Using these traditional methods and instruments they are creating beats and tracks that sound like current music especially electronic popular music. Along with making music all of the Indigenous people featured on this episode are activists for their communities and are involved in movements addressing climate change, cultural appropriation, Indigenous peoples' human rights, land return to Indigenous communities and raising awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls(MMIWG). Below are some links to educational resources surrounding these communities and issues. There are also some links to organizations and foundations you can donate to or volunteer for if you can. On this week's episode, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine shares the full conversation he had with Darren "Young D" Metz and Quinton "Yung Trybez" Nyce of the acclaimed Haisla rap duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids for his cover story in the latest issue of the magazine. This career-spanning conversation follows their evolution as artists and people from the release of the first two LPs in 2017 to their latest masterwork, Life After, which was released in late 2021. In that time, they've twice been shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and received wide-spread fan and critical adoration around the world. In part, that is due to their unbeatable ability to create songs that make you want to both dance and think. With Mike, the guys chatted about their Indigenous roots, making political music and who they're speaking to with their music, addressing difficult personal issues, mastering their vocal dexterity, learning from fan criticism in their community, and more.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids - "Change (feat. ebonEmpress & Jenny Lea)" from the 2021 album Life After on Distorted Muse. Vancouver-based duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids live up to their name. The duo of Darren “Young D” Metz and Quinton “Yung Trybez” Nyce formed the group in 2016 after seeing a show headlined by fellow-Indigenous artists, the hip-hop collective First Ladies Crew. As members of the Haisla nation, the pair knew they could use music to both celebrate and elevate their heritage. “As Indigenous people who have been shit on year after year after year by the government, from the people, from our own people, the media, the police… I feel like Indigenous people have developed our own sense of humour that only we get,” Nyce toldRange. “For us, the way we grew up listening to rap and hip-hop, it was so dark and heavy and it just weighed on you. You couldn't listen to it more than once unless you were in the right mindset. So for us, coming up, our message, our music, we wanted to talk about the heavy stuff but with a positive spin. And making sure that at the end of the day you left smiling — on a high note. We never want people to feel down on themselves. We want to lift our people up, not bring them down.” Metz adds: “It's just like our name also, Snotty Nose Rez Kids; it explains who we are without having to explain who we are. You gotta have a sense of humour when you come through trauma.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The First Nations Hip Hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids talk about addressing generational trauma in their music and being the change they want to see in their community. “Our people were stripped of a lot of things in the past—our culture, our traditions, opportunities. We're the seventh generation, we're trying to gain everything that not only we lost but the opportunities that they never had,” says Darren “Young D” Metz. Merging hip hop and Indigenous culture, rap duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids are creating a sound that goes hard for a cause. On tracks like “War Club” with DJ Shub, Young Tribz and Yung D connect Indigenous protests to the Black Lives Matter movement, and on “Boujee Natives,” Snotty Nose Rez Kids celebrate traditional culture through a modern lens. But as much as this music has a message, it also bangs, and SNRK's new album After Life runs the gamut of emotions; from tackling police brutality on “Red Sky at Night” to celebrating their community on “Wild Boy.” Their first tour since COVID brought them to Los Angeles, where Nate talked to the band repping the Haisla Nation about pipeline protests, reclaiming the term “savage,” and how the hell the Disney movie Pocahontas ever got greenlit. On this episode of Broadcast Dialogue - The Podcast, we welcome executive producer Vanessa Loewen of Animiki See Digital, to talk about bringing this year's event to life and the importance of connecting audiences.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The recent discovery of 215 bodies at the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia, Canada surprised everyone except Native people. For several decades survivors of these genocidal institutions have told stories of the abuse, neglect and violence that they experienced at these schools but the general public largely ignored them. In this episode, we take another look at the genocidal residential school system implemented by the Canadians and the Americans. Author and historian Keith Burich joins John to discuss the history and long-term impacts of the residential school system. Closing song is "War Club" by DJ Shub feat. Right now, across Turtle Island, we are experiencing a flowering of anti-racist activism. On the other hand, we still contend with a system where Indigneous Peoples make up 5% of the country’s population but more than 30% of the prison population. As an organization dedicated to seeking justice, RAVEN is joining the conversation about those gross inequalities. Music by Snotty Nose Rez Kids.

Toronto-born and bred, Indigenous multidisciplinary artist, producer, engineer and DJ, David Strickland – known for his work on some of the most iconic Grammy and JUNO-award winning records by Toronto artists and North American Hip-Hop progenitors alike – released his long awaited album, Spirit Of Hip-Hop, on June 29 via Entertainment One. David’s perspective, “The DJ is the Drummer; the MC is the Storyteller, the B-boy is the Dancer and the Graffiti Artist is the Sand Painter” is rooted in Spirit Of Hip-Hop, as he emerges from behind the boards to share an embodiment of the teachings, art, traditions, and music of the community, aligned with his Indigenous heritage. Amongst an extensive collaboration roster, the album includes Indigenous rappers such as Supaman, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Artson, Que Rock, Drezus, Leonard Sumner, Joey Styles, and more, while North American hip-hop legends EPMD, Saukrates, Def Squad (Redman, Erick Sermon, Keith Murray), Maestro Fresh Wes, and a posthumous verse from King Reign, are brought into the fold. David is passionate about the plight of the Mi'kmaq people and recognition of his family lineage can be traced back by five generations. He is committed to restoring the dignity and respect stripped by an unconstitutional agreement that remove and denied Indian status from thousands of people.

Howard Druckman is a music writer, editor of the SOCAN Words + Music magazine and one half of the dustbowl duo Hotcha! We talk about his history writing about music, his experience as Polaris Prize juror, how championing music he cares about energizes him and the time Madonna called him out onstage because of a piece he’d written about her. “I’ve been very, very lucky that I get to earn a living by listening to music and by talking to people who make it because that keeps me invested and excited. The difference I think, for me anyway, is that when I was younger, I would listen to music and it would be about my life. When I listened to The Who’s Quadrophenia it was so close to the bone of my own fairly dysfunctional family, that it was like “oh my god”. I couldn’t believe it. Or when I first heard Dylan and just went completely nuts, that spoke right to my heart. Now, there’s stuff that still speaks to me but it’s still a matter of the heart and it’s still emotional but it’s more like huge respect and admiration for what people are doing and how people are passionate and intense and strong about what they’re doing. I mean, I’m not experiencing what Snotty Nose Rez Kids are experiencing. I’m not experiencing what Haviah Mighty is experiencing. But the art they’re making is just so strong that I care about it and it moves me. It doesn’t move me the same way ‘cause it’s not about my life, but it still moves me.”--- SUPPORT THIS PODCAST: https://bit.ly/aswKO-FI--- HOWARD DRUCKMAN FB: https://www.facebook.com/druckmanh WEB: http://www.hotcha.ca MUSIC - SPOTIFY PLAYLIST: https://spoti.fi/319npq9--- THIS EPISODE SPONSORED BY: Eddie Orso's Album “Foreign Flowers” Get 20% off with discount code: szabo HERE: https://bit.ly/eddieorso--- AND SOMETIMES ... Cymene and Dominic recap their Halloween on this week’s episode of the podcast and plug the spooky new Cultural Anthropology series, “Time of Monsters,” (https://culanth.org/fieldsights/1584-time-of-monsters). Then (15:59) with many eyes on next week’s U.S. midterm election, Paige West joins us in the studio to process the social and environmental stakes of our contemporary political situation. We talk about slogging through the past two years of Trumpism, the resurgence of interest in local politics, the politicization and erasure of climate issues in the U.S., and how much New Yorkers are still paying attention to climate change years after Hurricane Sandy. A frank conversation follows about what climate-minded scholars can really do to help in these political times and about the need to experiment with new media for public communication to help us find wider audiences. We consider whether we can assemble a coalition of scholars who will pledge to give free lectures on climate change at community colleges around the country. What do you think dear listeners? Would you join us? We close with the indigenous hip hop scene that is better than the punk renaissance we dreamed of in 2016. And we promise Paige an owl.
