In today's episode of the podcast I talk with the very talented (and highly accomplished), multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter -St. Paul Petterson. Among the huge list of St. Paul's credits you will see some massive 'superstar' type names like - Morris Day, Darryl Hall, George Benson, The Corrs and Peter Frampton, but the thing that needs to be brought to your attention (at least in my opinion), is the fact that at only 17 years old, Paul was hand picked by the (now late, but always great) Prince to join 'The Time' for the Purple Rain movie. This of course led to many work related affiliations with Prince before St. Paul eventually became a successful singer and songwriter in his own right with labels like MCA and Atlantic. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of Me and Mrs. Jones by Billy Paul in (just under) fifteen minutes.Paul Williams known professionally as Billy Paul, was an American soul singer, known primarily for the song which was written by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Cary Gilbert. It describes an extramarital affair between a man and his lover, Mrs. Jones. The two meet in secret "every day at the same cafe", at 6:30, where they hold hands and talk. Hmmm...The single, released on the Philadelphia International label, was included on the album 360 Degrees of Billy Paul and was a number one hit for Paul in 1972.Me and Mrs. Jones was also recorded in 2007 by Michael Bublé along with with Bublé's then-girlfriend, Emily Blunt, who appears at the end of the track to perform the final verse. The Nightfly is the debut solo album from Donald Fagen.  Fagen and his Steely Dan partner Walter Becker had released the Gaucho album in late 1980, and Becker was having a lot of trouble.  His girlfriend died of a drug overdose in their apartment, and he was sued for several million dollars.  Shortly after that he was hit by a taxi, which shattered his leg.  Steely Dan disbanded in 1981, and Becker moved to Maui.  Fagen wanted “The Nightfly” to be autobiographical, and without the irony and biting nature of Steely Dan.  There is a lot of adolescence and innocence in these songs, reflecting back on Fagen's time growing up.  The album is also one of the first to be recorded entirely in digital.  Steely Dan had tried this approach fo“Gaucho,” but it didn't work out and they reverted to analog.  Audiophiles gravitate to The Nightfly, and EQ Magazine ranks it as one of the top 10 Best Recorded Albums of All Time, up there with The Beatles' “Sergeant Peppers” and The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds.”Donald Fagan had problems with depression after recording “The Nightfly,” and largely disappeared from the music scene through the rest of the 80's.  Fagan said in 2006 that he hasn't listened to "The Nightfly" since making it.  However, he did record two other albums which are considered to form "The Nightfly Trilogy," including Kamakiriad" from 1993 and "Morph the Cat" from 2006.  There would also be a reunion of Steely Dan later on.Bruce presents this jazzy album for this week's episode. I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)This lead single is also the track that leads off the album.  "I.G.Y." stands for International Geophysical Year, which was a project that lasted between July 1957 and December 1958.  It encompassed eleven earth science projects and included collaboration between East and West.  The song reflects the positivity of that time and collaboration.  The song was released in September 1982 and reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the end of November.The NightflyThis track imagines a late night DJ named Lester who plays jazz on WJAZ out of Baton Rouge, and also takes calls from conspiracy theorists.  is about a spiritual quest.  While not released as a single, this song did receive some airplay on FM stations in the 80's.Ruby BabyAlthough heavily arranged with close harmonies by Fagen, this is a cover song originally performed by the Drifters in 1956.  A number of artists have covered it over time, including Dion (number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962), Billy "Crash Craddock, Del Shannon, Mitch Ryder, and Bobby Darin.New FrontierThis fun single did not break into the top 40, but it was a frequent video on the then-new MTV channel.  The idea of the song is that an adolescent boy is bringing a girl over to his parents' bomb shelter for a good time.  "Yes, we're going to have a wing ding..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop (from the motion picture "Tootsie" )Dustin Hoffman stars in this cross-dressing romance comedy about an actor disguising himself as a woman to land a job. STAFF PICKS:Steppin' Out by Joe JacksonRob starts the staff picks with a song inspired by Jackson's time in New York City.  The song reflects the excitement of a drive around town, and hit number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is off the album "Night and Day," which reflects New York City during the day on side 1, and the City during the night on side 2.Mexican Radio by Wall of VoodooWayne's staff pick is a weird one.  This new wave act describes listening to the broadcasts of high-wattage unregulated Mexican radio stations whose signals were strong enough to be picked up in small town U.S.A.  Wall of Voodoo's $15,000 video would be on constant repeat on MTV.Maneater by Hall & Oates Lynch brings us a big Hall & Oates hit that spent four weeks at number 1 on the charts.  The song describes a woman who is bad news, only looking for money.  The video features a live panther, that got loose in the rafters of the set at one point, prompting a hasty retreat from Darryl Hall.   The sax part is played by Charles "Mr. Casual" DeChant, who also appears in the video during his solo.She Sheila by The ProducersBruce finishes up the staff picks with Atlanta's own The Producers.  This is the big single off the band's second album "You Make the Heat."  It went to number 48 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, and alternates between an ethereal synth part and a high energy New Wave sound. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Bonzo's Montreux by Led ZeppelinJohn Bonham's live drum solo closes out this week's podcast.

We've covered a number of underrated bands and albums, but perhaps the most underrated band of the 80's is 38 Special.  Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974 by Donnie Van Zandt and Don Barnes, 38 Special had a string of hits in the late 70's through the 80's including "Hold On Loosely,"  "Rockin' Into the Night," and "If I'd Been the One."  Special Forces is their fifth and most successful studio album, hitting number 10 on the Billboard 200.In addition to Van Zandt and Barnes, 38 Special's lineup for this album included Jeff Carlisi on guitar, Larry Junstrom on bass, Steve Brookins on drums, and Jack Grondin on drums.  A number of songs on this album were co-written by Jim Peterik, singer-songwriter and founder of the group Survivor.  Given the connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Donnie was the brother of original Skynyrd lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, and Junstrom was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd), it is not surprising that their sound has its roots in Southern Rock.  However, 38 Special tended towards a more mainstream hard rock sound.The name of the group comes from an incident where the police were called on the band during a late night practice session.  The door was padlocked, and the police broke the lock by shooting it out ... with a 38 Special. Caught Up In YouThis is the first single and the big hit from the album, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts.  Don Barnes sings lead on this track.  The lyrics are self-explanatory, extolling a girl with whom the singer is completely entranced.You Keep Runnin' AwayBarnes has the lead duties from this song again.  The lyrics describe a girl who has been burned in past relationships and has decided never to trust another man.  The singer encourages her to not give up, that "someday, someway, somewhere love is gonna find you."Back Door Stranger A deeper cut from the album, the lyrics describe a serial rapist sneaking around, and what will happen to him if the singer catches up with him.  "Take my chances, rather go to jail than see the eyes of a coward runnin' loose and well."  The guitar has a great wah-wah sound, and Donnie Van Zandt takes his turn on lead vocals for this track.Chain Lightnin' The thunder sound is striking as both the intro and the outro for this iconic song.  There's a little bit of a Pink Floyd echo to add to the mystery.  "And it's hotter than hell in the heavens tonight."  "And it's so tough when the satisfaction is greater than the risk."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ain't Got No Home by Clarence “Frogman” Henry (from the motion picture “Diner”)This novelty song was featured in the comedy-drama starring Steve Guttenberg and Kevin Bacon. STAFF PICKS:Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) by Van Halen Bruce begins the staff picks with a deeper cut off the Diver Down album.  This cover was originally recorded in 1924, and came to the band's attention when David Lee Roth recorded it off a late night AM radio station.  Jan Van Halen, Eddie and Alex's father, is featured in this song playing clarinet.Did It in a Minute by Hall & Oates  Brian features a hit off the "Private Eyes" album from duo Darryl Hall and John Oates.  It was the third single from the album.  The upbeat song is about finding love almost instantaneously.  Hall wrote this with his girlfriend Sara Allen and her sister Janna, who came up with the chorus.Find Another Fool  by QuarterflashWayne gets a second chance to feature Portland's own Quarterflash.  This rocking minor-key song peaked at number 16 on the charts, and is a break-up song after the girl has had it with her ex-boyfriend's cheating ways.  The name comes from an Australian slang phrase, "a quarter flash, three parts foolish."  Quarterflash is the husband and wife team of Rindy and Marv RossMore Than This by Roxy MusicRob's staff pick is the first single off Roxy Music's last album, "Avalon."  Bryan Ferry began writing the songs for Avalon while on the west coast of Ireland, and the music reflects the melancholy feel of the location.  The song has an unusually long synth-driven outro. COMEDY TRACK:Piss On the Wall by the J. The Doobie Brothers were already a commercial success by the time their fourth studio album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, was released in 1974.  This iteration of The Doobie Brothers features mainstream rock and roll with a folk harmony bent, and the vocals of singer-songwriters Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons.  Tim Porter is on bass, and "Little" John Hartman and Michael Hossack round out the group in the unusual position of dual drummers.The group got the name The Doobie Brothers from Keith "Dyno" Rossen, who suggested it to Johnston, "because you're always smoking pot."  Everyone agreed that it was a stupid name and they only intended to use the name until they came up with something better.  They never did, and The Doobie Brothers have been with us for 5 decades.When they were first starting out, The Doobie Brothers attracted early attention from local chapters of the Hells Angels, and many of their gigs were at biker bars and venues frequented by motorcycle riders.The Doobie Brothers have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the class of 2020.  Another Park, Another SundayWith a mellow, beautiful melody and chord progression, this track tells the story of the loss of a girl.  This is a very relaxing song that takes us back to a laid back memory.  Tom Johnston takes lead vocal duties on this first single release from the album.  Eyes of SilverThis is the second single release from the album.  While it is well known today, it did not do as well as the modest success that "Another Park, Another Sunday" achieved as a single.  Even though the band originated in the San Francisco bay area, this song has more of a southern rock feel to us.  We also enjoyed the sound of The Memphis Horns on this one.NobodyOriginally recorded on their debut album, this song was adjusted and put on the album.  This was the third single, though it was about to be overshadowed by the next single coming.Black WaterPatrick Simmons takes vocal duties on this "swamp rock" hit, which would be the biggest one off the album.  Originally the B-side from "Another Park, Another Sunday," DJ's began to pick up on it, and it would become The Doobie Brothers' first million-selling song.  Check out that acapella section at the end.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the motion picture “Blazing Saddles” Mel Brooks' comedy film could never be produced today!  Brian reminisces about taking a date to this movie.  Richard Pryor wrote parts of this film. STAFF PICKS:“Come and Get Your Love” by RedboneBruce's staff pick is the highest charting single from Redbone, a Native American rock group.  It would peak at number 5 on the Billboard hot 100.  Brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas, Tony Bellamy, and Butch Rillera make up the group, and Lolly plays the electric sitar.   It got a second life when it was on Star Lord's awesome mix tape from the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy.”“She's Gone” by Hall and OatesRob brings us some blue-eyed soul from Darryl Hall and John Oates.  Similar to the case with “Nobody,” this is the first release of of the song, which peaked at #60.  They would tweak the song and re-release the song in 1976, when it would go to #7 — the version you will recognize more easily.  Both Hall and Oates were going through breakups at the time that they wrote the song.  The video to this song is...well, definitely pre-MTV!“Burn” by Deep PurpleWayne's staff pick brings the tempo up with the title song off Deep Purple's eighth album.  The singer is David Coverdale, who co-wrote the song with Ritchie Blackmore.  The constant drumming and strong vocals make it a great driving song.  The lyrics tell the story of “a witch's last curse as she is burned at the stake.”“Jim Dandy to the Rescue” by Black Oak ArkansasBrian takes us down south, and back to a song originally written in 1956 by Lincoln Chase and recorded by Laverne Baker.  Ruby Starr and Jim "Dandy" Mangrum take turns on the vocal leads on this high energy boogie. COMEDY TRACK:"Energy Crisis '74" by Dickie GoodmanAnother montage comedy track from Dickie Goodman takes us out on this week's podcast.

Made it to number 25 on the Billboard 200. Darryl Hall & John Oates [04:42] "She's Gone" Abandoned Luncheonette Atlantic Records SD 7269 1973 To be honest, I really like "Las Vegas Turnaround", the track that precedes "She's Gone" but sometimes you just have to go with the hits. It's possible that somewhere out there in listener land, there is someone who has never heard "She's Gone". Hit #33 on the charts and turned platinum 29 years after its release. ABBA [10:09] "SOS" ABBA Atlantic Records SD 18146 1975 Too many tracks to choose from! I almost went with "Hey Hey Helen" but in the I had to send for help. While the album only just dented the Billboard 200 reaching #174, as a single "SOS" made it to #15 on the Hot 100. Count Basie Orchestra [13:31] "Jumpin' at the Woodside" The ABC Collection ABC Records AC-30004 1976 A 1976 reissue of Count Basie's 1969 Dot Records release Standing Ovation, recorded at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. Chelsea Wolfe [18:49] "Crazy Love" Abyss Sargent House SH141 2015 Continuing her evolution, this is one of the more brooding tracks from this excellent Sargent House release. This was also the first Chelsea Wolfe album to chart, making it up to #130. I'll also take this opportunity to let interested parties know that if you have the opportunity to see Chelsea Wolfe live, you should do it. Kiss [22:21] "New York Groove" Ace Frehley Casablanca Records NBLP 7121 1978 Back in the New York Groove, backed by such NY session musicians as Anton Fig and Will Lee. Of course this album made it well into the Billboard 200, peaking out at 26. It was also certified platinum a month after its release. Of course this is in the pre-Soundscan days, so that just meant that 1,000,000 copies of the album were shipped out, which explains why I picked up this remaindered copy for $1. Luke Sweeney [25:29] "Sympathy for the Night" Adventure: Us Aerobic International 2014 Speaking of grooves, this track by Bay Area musican Luke Sweeney has a very solid one. Nilsson [28:30] "One" Aerial Ballet RCA Victor LSP-3956 1968 Again, so many great songs to choose from, some of which we'll hear as we progress through the season, but I decided to go with this "One" ^.^ While this track failed to chart as a single, a year later Three Dog Night would take their rendition all the way up to number 5 on the Hot 100. Havens, Richie [32:45] "To Give All Your Love Away" Alarm Clock Stormy Forest SFS 6005 1971 A vert solid jam from Ritchie Haven's most successful album, featuring Rick Derringer on electric guitar. Monty Python [35:37] "Constitutional Peasants" Album to the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Executive Version Arista AB 4050 1975 Seems relevant. Alison Moyet [38:37] "Honey for Bees" Alf Columbia Records BFC 39956 1984 A solo outing from the vocal powerhouse half of Yaz, produced by early 80s mega producers Jolley & Swain. Patti Austin covered this song as a single a year later and took it into the top dance club singles. Moev [42:48] "Alibis" Alibis Nettwerk 12 NTWK 11 1984 I had almost forgotten about this Canadian synth pop outfit. I had their album Yeah, Whatever once upon a time as a cassette, and then this 12" single recently made it into my collection. Hakuna matata. The She’s [49:22] "Eva's Interlude/Anywhere But Here" All Female Rock and Roll Quartet Empty Cellar Records EMP 034 2017 Great band, great album, and a great interlude! The vinyl release has a fantastic bookley featuring artwork by women who inspire the band. Earth, Wind & Fire [54:24] "Magic Mind" All n’ All Columbia Records 34905 1977 Yet still even more hot stuff from Earth Wind & Fire. The gents made it all the way up to number 3 on the album charts and went on to go triple platinum. Diana Ross [58:09] "Upside Down" All the Great Hits Motown M13-960C2 1981 Defintely enjoying the handywork of Chic's Nile Rodger and Bernard Edwards on this late-disco classic. Sarah Vaughan [01:02:15] "It's Delovely" All Time Favorites Mercury Wing MGW 12123 1965 Two great classics that taste great together. I'm talking about Sarah Vaughan and Cole Porter. This week on SMI Radio, Greg Roth brings you a very interesting conversation with one of Seattle’s hottest artists, the silky smooth and soulful Allen Stone. I caught up with the pitch perfect crooner via telephone while he was out on the east coast doing his thing, barnstorming across the US of A bringing his brand of blue-eyed soul to the masses. We spoke about his music, the music business, his influences and what it was like to sing with one of his musical heroes, Daryl Hall and his upcoming appearance this week on Live From Daryl’s House. In addition Greg features selected cuts off of his newest release. Allen will return to the Northwest this spring to play more shows on both sides of the mountains including an appearance at Sasquatch 2012. Here is Allen’s complete tour schedule.
