Place and personal circumstance can play a decisive role in how one perceives the purpose and effectiveness of government. According to a 2021 study, in 2010 an estimated 37% of the U.S. population lived in an unincorporated area—places without municipal government and the services it might provide.     Central Alabama's Lowndes County, for instance, has a population of just under 10,000 people. Sixty-two percent of homes here are in unincorporated areas. A 2023 door-to-door survey led by the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice found 90% of homes in the county dealing with poor or failing sanitation infrastructure.  Catherine Coleman Flowers grew up in Lowndes County. In Holy Ground: On Activism, Environmental Justice, and Finding Hope, she writes about her experience growing up in rural America without the amenities and public services many take for granted in a developed country. Catherine combines personal memoir with historical analysis to trace her ancestral community ties and her own journey from public school teacher and daughter of two civil rights activists to her role today as a highly respected leader of the environmental justice movement and recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant.  Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Catherine Coleman Flowers discuss the pursuit of equitable sanitation infrastructure in the U.S., perspectives on democracy, and what causes the extremely divergent qualities of life found in the Ten Across geography.  Related articles and resources:   Holy Ground: On Activism, Environmental Justice, and Finding Hope (Catherine Coleman Flowers, 2025)  Waste: One Woman's Fight Against America's Dirty Secret (Catherine Coleman Flowers, 2020)  “Researchers fear grants for studies on health disparities may be cut in anti-DEI push” (NPR, March 2025)  “'Canary in a Coal Mine': Data Scientists Restore a Climate Justice Tool Taken Down by Trump” (Inside Climate News, Feb. 2025)  “A landmark investigation brings environmental justice to rural Alabama” (Grist, May 2023)  “Filthy Water: A Basic Sanitation Problem Persists in Rural America” (Yale Environment 360, Dec. 2020)  “Hookworm, a disease of extreme poverty, is thriving in the US south. He details how to diagnose resistance by comparing pretreatment and 14-day posttreatment egg counts using a fecal egg count reduction test. Dr. Kaplan then explains how and when to use “triple therapy” in cases when resistance is confirmed.Sponsored by Merck Animal HealthResource:https://www.cliniciansbrief.com/article/hookworm-dogs-drug-resistance-diagnosishttps://www.cliniciansbrief.com/article/persistent-or-suspected-resistant-hookworm-infectionshttps://UnlockBetterProtection.comContact us:Podcast@briefmedia.comWhere to find us:Youtube.com/@clinicians_briefCliniciansbrief.com/podcastsFacebook.com/cliniciansbriefTwitter: @cliniciansbriefInstagram: @clinicians.briefThe Team:Alyssa Watson, DVM - HostAlexis Ussery - Producer & Multimedia Specialist

The phrase “My pet has worms” is a common cause of calls to the veterinary clinic. Whipworms, hookworms, roundworms or tapeworms… no matter which worm, just the idea of something living inside our pets can cause concern among pet parents. The fact that many of these parasites can be transmitted to human family members makes today's information all the more important. Ray Kaplan, DVM, PhD, DipEVPC, DiplACVM is our guest today to talk about some of the most common zoonotic parasites. With nearly three decades of experience in the field of parasitology, Dr. Kaplan brings a wealth of knowledge and research to our discussion. 6 Things Your Dog's Poop Can Tell You About Its Health

POOP 911

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2022 4:18

Your dog's health is vital. After all, your dog is your best friend. Keeping your dog healthy can be as simple as looking at your dog's poop. While it doesn't sound appealing, there's a lot that your dog's poop can tell you about your pet's health. So, the next time you see your dog pooping, you can take a look at it. The following guidelines will help you determine whether your dog is healthy or if you need to call your trusted veterinarian.1. Hard PoopHard dog poop from your dog looks hard and pebbly. According to PetMD, this likely means that your dog is dehydrated. All you need to do to remedy the situation is to give your dog more water. It will not only make it easier for your dog to poop but it will also ensure that your pet is getting enough to drink.2. ColorWhen your dog is pooping grey or yellow poop, this is a sign that your pet may have pancreas, liver or gallbladder issues. It would be a good idea to take your dog to the vet so that an evaluation can determine what's causing these health problems. If you see your dog pooping black poop, it could indicate an upper intestinal bleed. Likewise, if your dog's poop has streaks of red in it, your pet could have a lower intestinal bleed. Get your beloved pet a health checkup for these changes in the color of your dog's poop.3. Liquid PoopIf your pet's poop has a liquid consistency, there are a number of reasons this could be happening. According to the American Kennel Club, it could be your pet's diet, parasites, eating spoiled food or garbage, allergies, infections like parvo or distemper, eating a foreign substance, illnesses, antibiotics, or stress causing your pet to have diarrhea. The AKC recommends if you notice your dog pooping liquid stools, then you can try having your dog fast, give it Pedialyte, adjust your pet's diet. Try adding rice water or other grain water to their diet to help. If your dog's diarrhea is persistent and accompanied by lethargy, vomiting, fever, or dry heaving you need to get your dog to the vet.4. Amount of PoopYour dog probably seems like a lean, mean pooping machine. However, the amount your dog is pooping is essential to your pet's health. If you see your dog pooping about the same amount he or she eats, then your pet is okay and doing what it's supposed to do. If your pet is pooping a lot and the consistency is changing, then there's something wrong and it's time to take your pet to the vet.5. ContentThe content in your dog's poop is super relevant to their health. Dogs pooping mucus with its poop is a sign that the colon is inflamed. According to Pet Health Network, this could mean that your dog has parasites, like hookworms. Check with your dog health professional who may suggest to de-worm your dog.6. Healthy PoopPet Helpful indicates, “when your dog is pooping and his poop looks chocolate brown, in soft, play-dough like logs that are easy to pick up or scoop, then your dog has healthy, normal poop.” This means there's no need to worry. While each dog may poop different size logs, the experts agree that as long as your dog's poop is proportional to the amount of food they are eating then your dog has normal, healthy poop.Your dog is important to you and making sure your pet is healthy also means paying attention to your dog's poop. Professional dog poop scoopers like the ones at POOP 911 see the signs of your dog's health in every pickup. At POOP 911, your pet's health is essential to us, as well. Not only do we take cleaning your yard seriously, but we also consider your pet's health seriously when cleaning your pet's poop. Our veterinary patients deal with the effects of “worms” in a number of ways – we frequently see animals who suffer from gastrointestinal illness, weight loss, blood loss, and occasionally kidney, cardiac, muscular or neurologic diseases that all may relate to parasitic infections. If you're a pet parent or animal producer – your eyes may glaze over a bit when your vet discusses the health risks associated with parasites – but these risks are significant. Many parasites have zoonotic potential – they can be shared between animals and humans – and this is part of why veterinarians continue to discuss these creatures with our clients – we want to protect animal health AND the health of humans who care for and interact with animals. The parasite risks in a specific region constantly change as parasites migrate (along for the ride in an infected animal) around the province, country, continent, or around the world. In many species, including dogs, there is evidence that some parasites are developing resistance to certain types of deworming medications. One of these parasites is the canine hookworm – known as Ancylostoma caninum. Dr. John Gilleard from the University of Calgary has been involved in investigations into the emergence and diagnosis of these drug-resistant canine hookworms over the past few years. In addition to working as a Professor of Parasitology and the Associate Dean of Research at the faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Calgary, his research focusses on drug-resistant parasites and ways to investigate the emergence and spread of these in animal populations including cattle, other ruminants, and dogs. We thank Steve for His 2 Minute Drill contribution to keep our country clean! Hi I'm Steve Spacek director of the American State Litter Scorecard. I thank diversified game for letting me guest this drill! To you, my listener, want to talk about celebrating the Earth and chat about the harms of solid waste littering and dumping. Nuisances--yet preventable behaviors for all US states and cities. When growing up in Texas, intrigued what governments did for people, like putting out fires, fixing streets. Later, working at a truck stop to pay grad school tuition, people would stumble from the highway, their vehicle totaled by debris left in the roadway. I became concerned. Seemed nobody wanted to write about talk about littering, how it ends up injuring, even killing, people. I wrote a thesis, DO MESS WITH IT, thinking this was a problem found only in the South. How wrong I was! Littering and dumping affected ALL 50 states. I began to present PowerPoint at public service conferences coast to coast. I created the litterscorecard.com website, published newspaper press releases, guested talk shows--in service to the people, a way to spread the word. Did you know solid waste, that includes food, paper and plastic packaging and containers, these breed viruses and diseases? Hookworms, tetanus, hepatitis, Zika, spread by flies, mosquitoes, roaches, rodents, dogs, cats, possums. Cigarette filters, the single most littered item in the world, contain heavy metals, arsenic and polonium-210. Cigarette Butts are carried by storm drains into creeks, lakes, oceans, then consumed by fish, oysters and shrimp we ourselves may later eat for dinner. Did you know, here in America, over 800 people DIE each year, approximately 3 DEAD EACH DAY! from encountering with, or crashing into, tire treads, 2x4’s, scrap steel, tree limbs, and other discarded debris, left willy nilly on streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches? Hey! If you are a construction/landscape worker, attend stadium events; a heavy fast food eater, a smoker. If you’re a teen or young adult age 16 -25, LISTEN UP! Litter studies in the USA and Canada have found you are in the “Profiled Litterer” group, the most prone or willing, to litter, dump seemingly anywhere....anytime! Hey! If YOU live in New York City, Texas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Georgia, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Tennessee, Miami, Detroit, please ...think twice about littering. Please report by email littered areas you see that need cleanups. For tips, check out the litterscorecard.com site, follow on Twitter and Facebook. Again, it's Steve Spacek, thank ya for listening!
