SISTER RAY, the project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes, was conceived out of necessity; a self-designed vehicle built to examine trauma with unflinching honesty. Armed with a voice that soars and scrapes in equal measure, Coyes converts first-person recollections of big, complicated love into universally potent allegories. Raised on the expansive prairies of Sturgeon County, Sister Ray's music is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences. With gospel bluegrass and 90's country playing in the background of their youth, it was the traditional Métis music played at home that not only brought them closer to their heritage, but taught them a form of storytelling rooted in collective value, resilience, and safety. Communion, the 2022 debut album by Sister Ray, is a raw, meticulously-crafted portrait of momentous, ordinary moments; experiences that define your past, and instruct how you move through the world. Quickly met with critical acclaim, the album was longlisted for the 2022 Polaris Prize, and Pitchfork deemed it “a complex study of webs of interpersonal hurt, and a celebration of emotional survival.” They have been featured on Audiotree, Paste, NPR, and more, along with appearances at Pitchfork Festival in Paris & London, Primavera Weekender, and headline and support dates across North America and Europe.Teeth, their new EP on Royal Mountain Records, came from a need for space and the repercussions conditional to this desire. “I was thinking often about intimacy and avoidance—crawling around to find where my place would be,” Coyes says. The songs were written quickly and vigorously, mimicked through the recording process, crafted by Coyes over five days, recruiting Ginla ( the Brooklyn based duo behind Communion and early Adrienne Lenker) as collaborators and producers. With three originals and a spectral cover of “I Never Will Marry,” inspired by Linda Ronstadt's interpretation, Coyes discerns big and small epiphanies in Teeth. So, this is it, Mike Raine's last episode as host of the Canadian Musician Podcast. Mike kicks off the show by introducing you to Manus Hopkins, one of the editors at Canadian Musician who you'll be hearing on the podcast from now on. And then, Mike shares his last interview for the Canadian Musician Podcast, and it's a prime example of the type of conversation he's loved having here. It is with Menno Versteeg, founder of Royal Mountain Records and former frontman of the band Hollerado. Menno – in his typical funny, honest, and self-deprecating way – tells the story of Royal Mountain's creation and how it almost accidently grew into Canada's best indie label, with an all-star roster that includes Alvvays, Mac Demarco, Orville Peck, PUP, and so many more outstanding artists.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ultra Q over Zoom video!  Oakland-based four-piece band Ultra Q have released their new EP Get Yourself A Friend today (via Royal Mountain Records). Fronted by Jakob Armstrong and featuring brothers Enzo and Chris Malaspina as well as Kevin Judd, the new EP was co-produced by Armstrong and Martin Cooke (Of Monsters And Men, Death Cab For Cutie, Destroy Boys) and features songwriting from Stefan Babcock, lead singer of PUP. Click HERE to buy/stream Get Yourself A FriendClick HERE to watch the video for “Get Yourself A Friend” Ultra Q have also released the official music video for the title track today which was shot by Pennacky, the Japanese director behind all of the music videos for 88Rising's soundtrack for Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings. Upon meeting Armstrong and Pennacky immediately connected on their love of The Cure and a deep-cut video that inspired Pennacky to attach the camera to a rope for the new visual. Pennacky is also an avid fan of the Ultraman Sci-Fi series and drew from the original plot to shape the story of the video. Opening double-shot “Pupkin” and “It's Permanent” soar to the heights of Ultra Q's powers in much different ways; the former a black-clad romp through a rainy graveyard, the former pushing straight to the clouds with its soaring chorus. “Straight Jacket” veers pleasantly close to the jangle-pop of the Go-Betweens. “Bowman” features guitars like cats getting into a scratch-fight while an astoundingly metronomic drumbeat is played live rather than punched out on a beat pad. Closing the EP is its title track, an affecting end credits anthem full of nostalgia and a twinge of regret. On the song, which Babcock helped to arrange, Armstrong shares, “I think this track sums up what this EP is supposed to be, a coming-of-age farewell to our youth. It's about being young and in love. Being reckless, and overstimulated. Feeling like the tragedies in your life are permanent and without any direction. We've grown up, even if it's ever so slight.” As a whole, Get Yourself A Friend marks the synthesis of a songwriter's vision and his band's ability, forged through an invisible existential threat and an ever-changing world, eager to show what they've found while we were all inside. Ultra Q's previous EPs, In a Cave in a Video Game and We're Starting To Get Along, saw the band gain praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, NME, and Vice, in addition to leading to tours with The Regrettes, Hockey Dad, and Bad Suns. Jakob Armstrong—youngest son of Green Day frontman Billie Joe—began playing guitar at seven years old and honed his craft privately until about sixteen, playing in bands in and around Oakland after meeting friends with like-minded tastes in music. Soon enough, with the memories of Ultraman action figures fighting in his mind, he and a group of friends he cultivated from those years playing around and pouring over records, formed Ultra Q. Nearly two years ago, Toronto’s Royal Mountain Records became what might be the first label to offer a mental health fund for its artists. It pledged that any artist on the label could anonymously access $1,500 in funds to go towards mental health services. Label founder Menno Versteeg discusses why musicians may be more likely to struggle with mental health, why the industry should support them, and ultimately why he stands by the fund despite it digging into the label’s bottom line. Formed by Tanner Bednar (vocals), Brandon Couture (guitar), Peter Giere (keyboard), Rafe Soto (drums), and Dominic Zeier (bass) Holly, was born in the summer of 2018 and went on to independently release their debut EP Letters from Lawndale that September. Since then, Holly, has opened for several nationally touring bands, garnered radio time on esteemed stations — such as 93XRT, WKQX, WGN, and WBEZ — and they’ve been televised on America’s longest-running music television program, JBTV. Earlier this year, Toronto-based indie label Royal Mountain Records (PUP, Mac DeMarco, Alvvays, U.S. Girls) created a first-of-its-kind fund to support its artists’ mental health. Each act on the label now has access to $1,500 each – completely confidential and non-recoupable – to use on mental health wellness and addiction treatment. The label is run by Hollerado frontman Menno Versteeg, who joins us this week to talk about the fund’s creation and, more generally, mental health in the music community. Menno is open and honest about how his own history as a touring musician inspired the fund, and why labels, managers, agents, and others who earn their living off of musicians need to do more to support artists’ well-being. And since Hollerado just released their final album and will soon embark on their last tour, we also fit in a quick chat about the band.
