S2 Ep9 - Transforming Trauma: How Melissa Histon Created "Got Your Back Sister"

Send us a textWhen Melissa Histon was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35, she made a promise to herself while lying on her bedroom floor during treatment: if she survived, her life would be different. That pivotal moment sparked a journey of transformation that would impact countless women's lives. After recovery, Melissa's newfound perspective led her to Nepal where she photographed women rescued from sex trafficking. Confronted with such profound suffering, she returned to Australia with a burning question: How could she know about such pain and continue her comfortable life unchanged? This restlessness birthed "Got Your Back Sister", an organisation that began literally from Melissa's living room, providing donated furniture to women fleeing violent homes. Nine years later, it's grown into a comprehensive support system helping women rebuild their lives after abuse. The statistics are sobering—one woman killed every 11 days through domestic violence in Australia—but through practical support, healing programs, and education about relationship red flags, Melissa's organisation creates pathways to safety and independence. What makes this story particularly powerful is how Melissa's personal health crisis transformed into purpose. From an anxious child who would vomit before swimming lessons to a confident advocate breaking cycles of violence, her journey demonstrates how our darkest moments can become catalysts for meaningful change.Whether you're interested in domestic violence prevention, personal transformation, or how grassroots initiatives can address complex social issues, this conversation offers insight into how one woman's decision to "do something" created ripples that continue to save lives. Have you ever wondered how you might transform your own challenges into purpose?Check out our socials on Instagram and Facebook at LeaveALightOnPodcast, and connect with us there.Share your stories with us and lets Leave a Light On

“Practice teaches us to have faith in the process,” says Andrea Barrett, National Book Award winning author. In this episode of Emerging Form, we speak with her about her newest book, Dust and Light: On the Art of Fact in Fiction. It's one of the most metaphor-rich, process-curious shows we've had yet. We explore the joys of rabbit holes, the importance of not knowing what we are looking for, the inevitability of false starts (and how to let go of the work we've done), why we shouldn't worry about writing unreadable first drafts, how to develop the muscle of intuition, and the questionable wisdom of how we teach creative writing.Andrea Barrett is the author of the National Book Award-winning Ship Fever, Voyage of the Narwhal, Servants of the Map, Natural History, and other works of fiction. She has received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Award, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an NEA Fellowship, and the Rea Award for the Short Story, and been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Send us a textWhat if your darkest moments could become the foundation for helping others? Meet Todd Ennis, a man whose journey from childhood trauma to mental health champion will leave you speechless.Todd doesn't hold back as he shares the brutal reality of surviving sexual abuse at six years old and how this early trauma shaped his path. With remarkable candour, he reveals how his life diverged from his brother's successful NRL career as he sought validation through violence, intimidation, and eventually addiction. The contrast between their choices—one embracing daily discipline while the other cut corners—offers profound insights into how similar backgrounds can lead to drastically different outcomes. The turning point comes in a moment straight from a film—Todd standing at traffic lights after being called by police, facing the literal and metaphorical choice between running or facing consequences. His description of feeling relief rather than just fear challenges conventional thinking about rock bottom moments. From rebuilding himself "like a skeleton in the ocean" to developing his eight-component mental armor program, Todd's transformation demonstrates that your past doesn't determine your future. Most powerful is Todd's philosophy on recovery—it's not about being cured but about building daily non-negotiables that shield you from depression's grip. "The day you say you're healed is the day you open yourself to relapse," he warns, emphasizing that mental health requires ongoing commitment. His 90-day program focuses on breaking destructive habits through consistent action rather than quick-fix solutions.Ready to join Todd's mental health army? Send us a textWhat does it take to run successful hospitality venues in today's challenging economic landscape? Luke Tilse, the visionary behind Happy Wombat, Young Street Hotel, and Apple Truck Cider, pulls back the curtain on his decade-plus journey through Newcastle's hospitality scene with raw honesty and philosophical depth. When Luke established the Happy Wombat over ten years ago, he deliberately chose what he calls "a daggy name" because his vision transcended trends – he wanted to create an institution where people felt at home whether on date night or catching up with mates after work. This thoughtful approach to business permeates everything he touches, from venue design to staff culture. The conversation takes a profound turn as Luke shares how his first son Charlie's Down syndrome diagnosis transformed not just his personal life but his entire approach to business. "He's been the best thing that's ever happened to us," Luke reveals, explaining how this unexpected journey deepened his empathy, connected him with a supportive community, and clarified his priorities. Now, much of his entrepreneurial drive stems from wanting to ensure Charlie's future care and support.Against the backdrop of what Luke describes as an "hourglass economy" squeezing middle-market venues, he offers hard-earned wisdom about survival: maintain unwavering quality, watch costs like a hawk, understand that your real product is the space you create rather than just the food and drinks, and above all, value human connections over profit margins.Whether you're in hospitality, running another business, or simply interested in how someone balances professional success with deep personal purpose, Luke's candid reflections will leave you pondering what truly matters in work and life.

Discussed in this episode:Thanks to @Ben-Schulman on YouTube for the information!BETH'S BACK STORY: All of Beth's songs are personal and delve deeply into themes of addiction; drugs & alcohol; abusive relationships; death & suicide; love; Scott (her husband of 23 years); her siblings & parents; living with mental illness; survival; playing music; and striving for happiness… She is a humble but wickedly talented artist who is raw, transparent, and completely honest with her audience. Some of the many personal and professional challenges she has endured and overcome:• Parents divorce when Beth is about 5 years old.• In psychological therapy starting at age 7.• Experiences a violent home invasion and robbery.• Father gambles the house away; abandons family; imprisoned for tax evasion. (The song “Try a Little Hard” off her latest album is about her dad and gambling).• Beth is an alcoholic by age 11.• At 12 years old, she's in a “relationship” with a 40 year-old man (The song “Woman Down,” off her latest album, is about this).• At 15 she takes off for Brooklyn, NY to live with a violent 25 year-old man.• Arrested & briefly jailed for DUI.• At 16, back in LA, she's asked to leave a prestigious music school because of poor attendance (caused by her staying out all night long to sing in South LA clubs).• In a string of abusive personal relationships. (She's written many songs about this theme, but “Caught Out in the Rain” and “Fire on the Floor” are two superb examples). • When Beth is 22, an older sister Sharon dies of AIDS at age 32. (The songs “Skin” and “Sister Heroine” are about her sister Sharon).• Officially diagnosed with Bi-polar I mental disorder around age 27.• As musical career begins to explode in 1999 with the hit single “LA Song,” Beth weighs just 92 lbs. and nearly dies due to drugs, alcohol, and anorexia.• Atlantic Records drops her from the label by 2000.• Long-term drug & alcohol addiction and series of stays in rehab and psyche wards. (Her song “Isolation” is about being in a psyche ward; “Spiders in My Bed” is about living with bipolar mania). By late 2000/early 2001, Beth is completely out of the music business.(1) 2023: The most recent documentary is “Bad Woman Blues” (60 min; a German production) from fall 2023: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9Fjr2HTGdY(2) 2005: “Beth Hart Documentary” (from the 2005 ‘Live at Paradiso' DVD; 32 min. plus 8 min. song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFHisbCrqdg. This early documentary is from the time of Beth's re-emergence and comeback into the music scene in Europe with the 2003 “Leave the Light On” album and legendary Paradiso concert in May 2004. (3) 2018: “The Beth Hart Story: From Los Angeles to Amsterdam” (32 min): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGkubyOS7jw. This documentary aired on Dutch TV in 2018, following Beth's big-time, sold-out, appearances at the Royal Albert Hall in London (5,300) and the Ziggo Dome (17,000) in Amsterdam earlier in the year. Papa Roach has an emotional song called leave A Light On. According to Jacoby Shaddix, it's his favorite moment during their set as it is done acoustically with the fans doing a sing-along. Benefitting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the band's royalties on this song are being donated directly to the AFSP, in perpetuity. Every time the song is streamed, downloaded, or used in any way a donation is being made. The band's initial donation to the AFSP of $155,000 was presented at their final show in Denver, Colorado.  If you or a loved one is in crisis, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988, or the Crisis Text Line (Text TALK to 741741) to talk to someone who can help. You are not alone. Together, we can talk away the dark." Chris Daughtry attended a Papa Roach show recently in Nashville. Jacoby will talk about how this collaboration came to happen after he invited Chris on stage to sing "Scars."

Throughout the Global DJ Broadcast calendar, Markus Schulz strives to go a step further by creating a selection fo specialist themed concept mixes; reflecting the broad palette of his sound. The newest of the seven themes is dedicated to the high tempo and uplifting feelings of trance, titled as Dream Sequence. Now in its third iteration, this particular concept returns to mark the dying embers of summer, placing the theater of the mind above the clouds to seek a perfect view.    The mix is highlighted by Markus' X single with Paul Oakenfold, along with an extensive showcase of Daxson's Face the Future album, including the upcoming single with Sue McLaren, In the Darkness; weaved around lots of uplifting favorites from the regular studio shows across the past 12 months, extracted from Coldharbour and beyond.   Hope you enjoy the set, and will be one you will wish to keep in your collection. The singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun recently released her fourth album, called “Proof of Life.” Raised near Phoenix, Oladokun had aspirations of becoming a preacher before turning to music in earnest. Like many of the great songwriters, she has a way of staring down the hardest parts of life with an offbeat sort of wit. The New Yorker's Hanif Abdurraqib calls her a “writer's writer,” someone “interested in the lyric as an opportunity to build narrative worlds.” Oladokun talked with him about seeing a video of Tracy Chapman performing in a Nelson Mandela tribute concert: “I was ten years old, watching someone who looked like me play the guitar,” she recalls. “I asked my parents for a guitar that Christmas.” Chapman remained a lasting influence on her as an artist. “You could just tell that what drove her to open her mouth in the first place was conviction. Belief in her values and belief that if people would only think about this, it would change the world.” While in New York on tour, Oladokun performed “Trying” and “Keeping the Light On”—both from her new record—live at WNYC. Plus, the fiction writer Bryan Washington on the joys of a Houston ice house.
