River, Diverted is a wild and wonderfully dark and campy novel by Jamie Tennant, published by Palimpsest Press in 2022. River Black found cult success writing slasher flicks but has grown increasingly disillusioned and unhappy. When a mysterious book appears in her mailbox, her life is turned upside down. River returns to Nagano, Japan, where the book originated, hoping to pay respects to old friends and revisit her past. Instead, she finds her memory is duplicitous, her reality is porous, and the mysterious book is more alive than she could have believed. River, Diverted is a dark fairy tale that explores the trickery of memory, the delicacy of friendship, the nature of creativity and the deliverance of hope. Filled with pop culture references and a deep love of monster movies, River, Diverted is both a light-hearted and subtly serious read that will captivate readers. About Jamie Tennant: Jamie Tennant is a writer and radio program director based in Hamilton, ON. A long-time music enthusiast, James has covered music and pop culture both locally and nationally. SISTER RAY, the project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes, was conceived out of necessity; a self-designed vehicle built to examine trauma with unflinching honesty. Armed with a voice that soars and scrapes in equal measure, Coyes converts first-person recollections of big, complicated love into universally potent allegories. Raised on the expansive prairies of Sturgeon County, Sister Ray's music is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences. With gospel bluegrass and 90's country playing in the background of their youth, it was the traditional Métis music played at home that not only brought them closer to their heritage, but taught them a form of storytelling rooted in collective value, resilience, and safety. Communion, the 2022 debut album by Sister Ray, is a raw, meticulously-crafted portrait of momentous, ordinary moments; experiences that define your past, and instruct how you move through the world. Quickly met with critical acclaim, the album was longlisted for the 2022 Polaris Prize, and Pitchfork deemed it “a complex study of webs of interpersonal hurt, and a celebration of emotional survival.” They have been featured on Audiotree, Paste, NPR, and more, along with appearances at Pitchfork Festival in Paris & London, Primavera Weekender, and headline and support dates across North America and Europe.Teeth, their new EP on Royal Mountain Records, came from a need for space and the repercussions conditional to this desire. “I was thinking often about intimacy and avoidance—crawling around to find where my place would be,” Coyes says. The songs were written quickly and vigorously, mimicked through the recording process, crafted by Coyes over five days, recruiting Ginla ( the Brooklyn based duo behind Communion and early Adrienne Lenker) as collaborators and producers. With three originals and a spectral cover of “I Never Will Marry,” inspired by Linda Ronstadt's interpretation, Coyes discerns big and small epiphanies in Teeth. Their yearning tone and staggering honesty trickles throughout and the erosion leads to an opening—vacant, unfamiliar, and with room to breathe.  Thanks for listening!!! It's been an amazing Season 4 here at Hidden Track. We've had visits with an astounding array of inspired artists, ranging from local heroes to global greats; from a reigning Polaris Prize winner to a newly minted Grammy Award winner; from hip-hop to hardcore punk to homespun folk. It's been such a wild 2023! So wild, in fact, that we felt the need to do a special episode to wrap up the season.   Given the daunting task of summarizing such an incredible season, Grant decided to call in a little help! For this year-end episode, Grant Stovel is joined by Hidden Track producer Scott Zielsdorf to help share some great stories and songs from amongst this season's 21 episodes.   In particular, this collection of magical moments zeroes in on the idea of connecting to something larger through music -- whether that's connecting with family and friends, with community, with humanity at large, connecting with your own inner sense of humanity, even connecting with your true artistic self. That yearning to connect is often the catalyst that compels musicians to create, to express, to be part of something.   Music can be a vector for connection in amazing ways -- as we hear in this episode! With memorable stories and songs from the likes of William Prince, Tanika Charles, Arlo Maverick, Wendy McNeill, Dan Mangan, F*cked Up, Young Fathers, Aysanabee, Andy Shauf, Kid Koala & Leilani, Alex Cuba, and July Talk.   Thank you for being with us in 2023! Their three critically-acclaimed releases have been punctuated with international tours, where their live show has gained a reputation for what Absolute Underground Magazine described as “[sounding] like there are at least five people onstage”. Founded in 2009 by Trez (vocals, guitar) and Stef (drums), Mares released their debut The Moulting in 2010, where it topped campus radio charts and was hailed by PopMatters as “superb”; they signed to Canada's Sonic Unyon Records shortly thereafter. 2012's The Pilgrimage was produced by Sanford Parker (Voivod, Yob) and praised by Pitchfork, Decibel, and Terrorizer, as well as a nod from Canada's prestigious Polaris Prize. After several North American tours, a long hiatus followed; they re-emerged in 2022 with Trez remaining at the helm, and long-standing Mares friend and collaborator Casey on drums, bass, and electronics. 2022's The Exile was deemed by many reviewers as their finest work to date; Decibel praised its “nuance, vulnerability, and maturity”, and AngryMetalGuy called it “the sound of a band in its prime, not one just slinking back in from the cold”. John told Susan it was his favourite version. Shortly after releasing Just Won't Burn, Susan was to meet and fall in love with Derek Trucks and the rest is music history. The  new re-release also has outtakes, alternate takes and two of her songs re-done live in New York by Tedeschi Trucks.   Along with Dave Grohl, Gloria and Emilio Estevan,  Susan was  honoured by The Smithsonian Institute for  "distinguished contributions to the advancement of areas of interest to the institution"

Dan Mangan is fond of summing up his whole approach to a creative life in music with a simple axion: "It's cool to care."  Dan models that approach in everything he does. Whether he's starting his own label, Madic Records, or co-founding community concert platform, Side Door Access; acting as a longtime vocal advocate for the de-stigmatization of discussions around mental health; or through his countless epic live performances over the years and seven albums to date... it's very clear that Dan cares, and he doesn't mind who knows it.  Ever since he first burst out of the Vancouver scene with his debut album, nearly two decades back, Dan's been deeply interested in trying to involve people in not just his music, but what music can do; drawing people into that shared experience. Sometimes he's bringing his dynamic range all the way down to whisper-quiet, making audiences lean in closer. Sometimes - as on the giant Going Somewhere tour which brought him to Alberta in Fall 2023 - it's sending out a phone number to fans and asking them to text him their song requests before the shows. The point is, he cares about those moments of real human connection, and he hopes that you think it's cool to care, too.  Dan's latest Juno-nominated and Polaris Prize-shortlisted album Being Somewhere is a distillation of his whole ethos. And this autumn, he brought some of that music to CKUA.  Amidst the stacks of vinyl and shellac in CKUA's legendary music library, Dan shared an insightful and occasionally hilarious conversation, and performed beautiful, intimate, solo acoustic versions of two songs: Being Somewhere standout "Fire Escape" and as his latest, a single called "Say When." It's October 6th and tomorrow is exactly one year since Alvvays released their third album Blue Rev, a career high-water mark for the Toronto-based group. With only a couple months remaining in 2022, the lightning speed with which it was unanimously named one of the best of the year - in many cases taking the number one spot on those lists, or top three - was thrilling to witness. 2023 brought Alvvays their second Juno Award for the album, and their third consecutive Polaris Prize shortlist. So it makes good sense that this is an anniversary well worth celebrating, as the band plans to do, including a special vinyl reissue of Blue Rev on the way (details coming soon). Molly Rankin, the co-founder, frontwoman, songwriter, guitarist, and producer for the band, sits down with host Carmel Holt to talk about the milestone album, the journey thus far, and an honest look at what all their well-earned success means.

She tells Tom why she wanted to write about her experience with abortion in her one-woman show, “Oh God, A Show About Abortion,” which is currently at Just For Laughs in Toronto. Plus, Polaris Prize-winning Quebecois band Karkwa disappeared for 13 years. Now, they've decided it's time to make new music and have just released a new album “Dans la seconde.” Keyboardist and songwriter François Lafontaine tells Tom where they've been and why they've decided to come back.

Full-disclosure, Kaia and I don't get to talking about Composing for Film and Television until about 20 minutes into this conversation. We start by discussing the early stages of her career learning clawhammer banjo from the legendary Mitch Podolak, attending various Old-Time music camps in West Virginia, and growing up in Canada's Folk Festival scene. Then, in 2018 after 2 years of extensive touring, Kaia suffered a panic attack mid-show and came to the realization that she needed to make a change.  After attending some community classes on how to use Ableton, the freedom of self-producing and composing opened up a new world, and she began to explore opportunities in Film and TV, putting her career on a whole new path. Fast-forward to today, Kaia has just been nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for ‘Best Original Song' for the series 'The Porter'. She is a Juno Award-nominated and Polaris Prize-longlisted songwriter of Grenadian-Canadian heritage. Her voice and deft songcraft have garnered acclaim from CBC, BBC Music and Rolling Stone. Her recent film work includes the CBC/BET+ TV Emmy-nominated series 'The Porter', and she has had a song placed on Global TV's Mary Kills People. Kaia has toured internationally, including notable performances at NPR Tiny Desk Concerts and Carnegie Hall. In 2021, Kaia took part in the Slaight Music Residency at the Canadian Film Center and released a new single ("Parallels"). “When The Storm Has Passed” With ten albums or so under their indie folk belts, The Great Lake Swimmers have consistently been one of the most arresting affecting and spellbinding bands around. The Canadian outfit introduced themselves to the world with their self-titled 2003 effort and since then have put out classics like New Wild Everywhere, The Waves, The Wake and the Juno-nominated Lost Channels, which was also shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. Sonically, the band bring to mind everyone from R.E.M to Teenage Fanclub to Miracle Legion. And throughout their songbook, singer Tony Dekker's poetic lyrics form a literate blend of ecology, environmentalism and good old fashioned romanticism. He's a potent triple threat. The band have also put out four live albums, four EPs and a covers album that features takes on numbers by The Rolling Stones, Tom Waits and NeIl Young and John Cale. Oh, and Dekker also has a marvelous solo album called Prayer of The Woods. The point here is that there's a healthy crop of Great Lakes Swimmers material for you to plunge into. But the music you're hearing on the program today is the band's first new music since 2019. It's been a while. But they're back and they've never sounded better. Their two new tracks—“When The Storm Has Passed” and “Moonlight, Stay Above”—feature Dekker's trademark poetic finesse and penchant for writing some of the catchiest and heartfelt songs on the planet. Added to already existing dwindling digital revenues and the toll a touring loss makes on mental health, acts are feeling the squeeze. One area where artists are looking to take the power back is on selling merchandise at live venues and festivals. A lot of medium to large venues take a 25% commission on artist merch sales by default, without providing any assistance. Some venues bring in an agency to manage merch and take the cut at source and in many venues this is a mandatory and sometimes additional cost. When it applies to support and emerging artists, it can really make the difference whether a tour makes money or not.On this episode we spoke to Canadian rapper, writer, poet and activist Rollie Pemberton aka Cadence Weapon on some of the thoughts he has shared on the live music industry.Rollie is an Edmonton-born, Toronto-based rapper and author of a new book about his life in music - Bedroom Rapper. Pemberton won the 2021 Polaris Prize - the Canadian album of the year prize - for his fifth album Parallel World.Rollie has announced a North American campaign to end the practice of venues and festivals taking a cut from the artists' merch – in association with the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) and the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) to launch of the FAC's 100% Venues campaign called #MyMerch. The campaign has come in the wake of FAC's UK campaign where 400 venues have now signed up to pledge not to take a cut on artist's merch sales in venues. Ireland could do with a similar list. It's a practice that was largely unknown to fans, but recently has been highlighted by Dry Cleaning, Yard Act, The Big Moon lately, and even, Jack Antonoff has weighed in.Niall and Andrea talk about how merch cuts work, and their issues, before we chat to Rollie about the campaign, his experiences touring last year at a loss and a previous 360 deal he signed that exploited every stream of income he had for 12 years, and his hopes for the future. Colonialism. Beauty. Hate. Feminism. Privilege. Success. These aren't your average topics for a TV program created in the style of an old-school children's variety show. Of course, Lido Pimienta is anything but an average artist. For her brand-new project, Lido TV, the Polaris Prize-winning musician flexes a whole lot of creative multi-media muscle. Even longtime fans of her music may be surprised by many of the creative dimensions that she brings to this show; her biting humour, flair for eye-popping visuals, and almost mind-bendingly diverse areas of musical interest are just a few of the layers of expression revealed in Lido TV. Taking all these tools, an artistic ambition that knows no bounds, visits to different people and areas in her native Columbia, and an extremely eclectic guest list, Lido has just released the first six episodes of Lido TV, which began streaming on CBC Gem in Autumn of 2022. Each episode deals with a serious societal issue or theme, as explored through the use of dramatic dialogue, songs, comedy skits, and plenty of puppets. In a characteristically wide-ranging, whip-smart and hilarious conversation, Lido gets into the genesis for her "kids' TV show for adults;" her childhood in Columbia; how her gateway to writing songs was metal band Cradle of Filth; friends/ guests/ collaborators ranging from Beverly Glenn-Copeland to Nelly Furtado to metal band Kittie; and the importance of wanting to foster a more caring, equitable world. As Lido tells us, "The TV raised me, so now I wanna raise some little future freaks with my show".

With every release, Milk & Bone redefine the boundaries of pop music with a mix of deeply emotional tracks and candy-pop hymns.Since coming together to create Milk & Bone in 2015, the duo has spawned two critically acclaimed albums and one EP: Little Mourning (2015), Deception Bay (2018) and DIVE (2019) on top of accumulating over 75 million streams online. On stage, the musicians have captivated audiences while touring across Canada, Europe and the United States. At home, the duo's touchingly personal songs have reached fans of such television series as Riverdale, Search Party, Broad City and Tiny Pretty Things, as well as several advertising campaigns, including Dior.Milk & Bone has won a Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year (2019), and was nominated for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2016, as well as two long list nominations for the Polaris Prize (2015 and 2018). Outside their record releases as Milk & Bone, Laurence and Camille have also crafted music for two original shows produced by Cirque du Soleil, as well two feature films from Québécois filmmaker Podz. The theme song for King Dave, titled Natalie, earned the pair a nomination for Achievement in Music (Original Song) at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards. After a long wait, the duo is ready to unveil the fruits of their musical and personal explorations with Chrysalism, a new album set to be released in 2022. For Milk & Bone, the writing process felt like a renewal of vows -- an opportunity for them to work together on new music with intention and desire, instead of doing it simply because it's the next logical step. The result is a highly spirited record that marks a departure into an unmistakably pop-forward territory for the duo. With enthralling vocals, synth-led music and melodic guitar riffs, the pair explores topics like love, longing and heartbreak from a decidedly more mature perspective, choosing to see themselves as actors in the storyline of their love lives, instead of victims of circumstance. What comes through is a poignant reflection of growing older and coming into oneself. We want to hear from you! ABOUT ROLLIE PEMBERTON: He is a writer, rapper, producer, poet and activist who performs under the name Cadence Weapon. He won the 2021 Polaris Music Prize for his album Parallel World. His writing has been published in Pitchfork, The Guardian, Wired and Hazlitt. Currently based in Toronto, Pemberton was a former Poet Laureate in his hometown of Edmonton. ABOUT Bedroom Rapper: Cadence Weapon on Hip-Hop, Resistance and Surviving the Music Industry: Tracing his roots from recording beats in his mom's attic in Edmonton to performing with some of the most recognizable names in rap and electronic music—De La Soul, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Questlove, Diplo, and more—Polaris Prize winner Rollie Pemberton, a.k.a Cadence Weapon, captures the joy in finding yourself, and how a sense of place and purpose entwines inextricably with a music scene in his debut memoir: Bedroom Rapper. From competitive basement family karaoke to touring Europe, from fights with an exploitative label to finding his creative voice, from protesting against gentrification to using his music to centre political change, Rollie charts his own development alongside a shifting musical landscape. As Rollie finds his feet, the bottom falls out of the industry, and he captures the way so many artists were able to make a nimble name for themselves while labels floundered. Bedroom Rapper offers us a wide-ranging and crucial history of hip-hop. With an international perspective that's often missing from rap music journalism, he integrates the gestation of American hip hop with UK grime and niche scenes from the Canadian prairies, bringing his obsessive knowledge of hip-hop to bear on his subject. Rollie takes us into New York in the '70s, Edmonton in the '90s, the legendary Montreal DIY loft scene of the 2000s, and traces the ups and downs of trusting your gut and following your passion, obsessively.

Episode 15! Holy mother of pearl; who'd ever thunk it? Thank you for being a part of this fun, zany, welcoming little vibrant community called Graventown. As a very special guest for this monumental episode, I was very lucky to connect with Danny Michel. The only good thing about not shopping in record stores anymore is you won't have to figure out what genre to look for Danny under. If that were the case, you could try looking under, rock, pop, folk, world or even classical. His own self-described musical A.D.D. has kept his music fresh for decades. Maybe it has something to do with being born next to a candy factory, or his ambidextrous brain, but his thoughtful lyrics & charming performances have earned a devoted fan base, multiple nominations for Junos, The Polaris Prize, CBC's "Heart Of Gold", and most recently winning the CFMA's "Producer of the year" and "Oliver Schroder Pushing the Boundaries" Awards. But Danny considers his career highlights to be the unique real life moments like performing for Jane Goodall's 85th birthday party, touring with Stuart Mclean and working with charities close to his heart. We had a nice long chat about music, covid, spotify, genre-hopping, his own self made super intricate tyco car track in house called #danlandiagardensspeedway and recording songs on a Russian icebreaker with astronaut Chris Hadfield. Reflecting Climate Grief Through Music - Tamara Lindeman of The Weather Station

Reseed

Music can help us make sense of, and deeply feel, our climate grief. Tamara Lindeman's acclaimed album Ignorance about climate grief struck a chord with citizens and critics. Performing as The Weather Station, Lindeman's 2021 poetic, thoughtful, and highly danceable album was named album of the year by The New Yorker and Uncut. Tamara joins Alice Irene Whittaker, the host of Reseed, for a conversation that starts with climate grief before spanning to art, selfhood, rootlessness, connection, and the heartbreaking beauty of birds.   Tamara Lindeman emerged from Toronto's vibrant folk scene, and as The Weather Station, she has released five albums and toured extensively across Europe, the US, Canada, and Australia.  She has been nominated for a Juno, a Socan Award, and shortlisted for the Polaris Prize, and garnered extensive praise from Pitchfork, The New Yorker, The Guardian, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. Our climate change narratives are often overfull of information and despair. Our human souls also require art and stories, and our climate movement needs storytellers, artists, and musicians. Art, stories and music don't need to have the answers to the climate breakdown we are facing - there are other mediums for that, and we need to push for those answers and solutions - but art, stories, and music do have this role to play in helping us process, dream, imagine, feel, connect, release, and grieve. In a time of climate chaos, art can help us to dream of a different world while connecting with each other. Enter a giveaway for a vinyl copy of Ignorance on Instagram at @AliceIreneWhittaker. While working on a student research project, anthropologist and musicologist Jeremy Dutcher came across a vast archive of his indigenous peoples' songs recorded on hundred year old wax cylinders. That incredible discovery set him on a life-changing path of cultural education, identity politics, and the creation of "Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa", his Polaris Prize and Juno Award winning debut album. Join Nick as he and Jeremy discuss the preservation of native heritage, touring Canada with an orchestra, and celebrating the intersection of cultural and identity issues. HIGHLIGHTS: [01:43] What began as a college musicology research project evolved over many years into Jeremy's debut album [03:01] In the early 1900s an anthropologist lived with Jeremy's people and recorded their songs on wax cylinders [04:51] After discovering this treasure trove of cultural records, Jeremy set out to take the information out of the university and back to his people [08:10] Jeremy's desire to create music that spoke to indigenous people was because he didn't see himself reflected in modern music [10:15] Jeremy became much more aware of his history and his culture through reviewing his people's archives [11:11] Jeremy explains how his people's language describes the area where they live in Canada [13:10] Jeremy sees the solidarity of indigenous people reaching across any arbitrary man-made borders [14:35] Jeremy's path through life led him from curiosity about his culture to celebrating his heritage through music [15:27] Jeremy examines how entities like Canada and America, that were designed on top of existing places, made efforts to erase the presence of the peoples that were there first [18:43] The preservation and celebration of his heritage, culture and language has given Jeremy a new direction in his life [20:53] Up until twenty five years ago, there was no writing system for Jeremy's language, a new system his mother learned only two years ago [23:19] Jeremy walks Nick through the pronunciation of the title of his album, "Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa", which means "Our Maliseet Songs" [24:38] Jeremy's solitary musical project suddenly became a part of the wider world, winning accolades and making the public aware of Jeremy's culture [25:54] Jeremy explains that the songs of indigenous people aren't entertainment, they're the history and the stories and the laws of their civilization that were collected over hundreds of years [27:06] Jeremy uses his performances to express both indigenous and identity issues, celebrating the intersection of cultural and sexual ideology and politics [29:30] Jeremy recorded his new album in Toronto, expanding his sound with choirs and big orchestral arrangements [32:14] Before the pandemic, Jeremy went on tour throughout Canada, performing his album with an orchestra [35:13] Jeremy would love to share his music and his culture with the native and non-native people of "Turtle Island" (what his people call America) [37:16] Jeremy considers himself more of an arranger than a composer, putting contemporary flair to the traditional music of his people   Thanks for listening! Haviah Mighty drops by the Cavern after a big win: She's the winner of the 2019 Polaris Prize for the album, 13th floor. Lauren and Haviah get into how to work with a producer, writing for discomfort, and using your voice as an instrument. “My approach is to open up minds so that the ignorance won't be so wilful.” Our favourite moments: “I'm talking about these themes that can constitute discomfort, depending on what the listener looks like. My intention when giving the information is for there to be a dialogue based on the information.” [4:30] “When you say ‘I don't see color,' you're dismissing all of the people that do… My approach is to open up minds so that the ignorance won't be so wilful” [7:05]“I'm not DIY in the ‘I want to do everything myself way'; I'm DIY in the ‘I want my input to be considered way.” [10:19] “I was listening to the new Da Baby record…He has a cool energy.” [14:28] “You can pull inspiration from anywhere” [15:25] “I'm very into music. I have a great ear. I feel like I know enough about how things sound to know what notes I can't hit…” [17:26] “I took one hip-hop class and I wasn't even the best one! I just know that I don't consider myself to be a dance so it's funny when people are like, “You're such a good dancer.” [18:55] “[My sisters] are just really talented people. Involving them just makes the most sense.” [20:00] “I don't have to be as critical of being a good music because my standards are really high.” [25:08] “My competitiveness, my musicality? That's kind of instilled.” [26:12] Haviah Mighty's 2019 tour is coming to Halifax (October 26), Mississauga (October 27), Edmonton (November 7), Calgary (November 8), and Brampton (November 30). Tour dates can be found on her site. CREDITS: Cavern of Secrets is hosted by Lauren Mitchell. Produced by Ellen Payne Smith & Katie Jensen, with assistance from Vicky Mochama and Sarah Daniel.
