Finn Wolfhard joins Simon and Brian for a discussion about his debut solo album, Happy Birthday, recorded in Chicago and co-produced by Kai Slater. The versatile actor and musician reflects on the lo-fi production techniques employed on the album, how themes of youthful identity and anxiety permeate his songs, and his love for The Beatles.
In this Trashy Royals crossover, Alicia reveals all the dirt about the OG of dictators, Julius Ceasar and his four-ish wives. Each of his wives served a needed purpose for Ceasar in their own time, and these stories get trashy! From young love to power alliances, this is a whole Roman Times soap opera featuring our wives, Cossutia, Cornelia, Pompeia, and Calpurnia. But that is not all – thrown in a little Cleopatra too, and this one becomes a legendary tale. As we roar towards the Ides of March, it just makes sense to spend a little time with Rome's OG, Gaius Julius Caesar. But since it's also Women's History Month, we're taking stock of his life and times through his marriages, both the ones we're sure happened, the one we aren't sure happened - and of course, Cleopatra makes an appearance. The time came for out last two Dexter cattle to be sent to the butcher. We did arrange for "on farm kill" for Mr Tasty the steer (the last calf born on the farm) and our good old Calpurnia (one of the first calves who arrived at the farm). Will not get into all the arguments defending the decision to "eat a family member" but I will say this, she had a goodly bit of fat cover, had not run around in years, and to just bury her would have been such a waste.Mr Tasty on the other hand was as fine a specimen of hanging beef as you could hope for. These two will feed our family for a good couple of years or more.Otherwise, the garden is getting planted, geese have decided to sit on their nests, and amazingly Acorn also broke a 28 year record of avoiding hair salons and yes- PAID for a haircut... This bit was not discussed in the podcast.Blind Hog is getting the lawn mowed before the rains set in. Acorn just adjusted the carb on the Massey Ferguson and yes, it is running- even drove it around a little bit! Fingers crossed...
Publius Servilius Casca högg först i Caesars skuldra. Solo quest'ultimo vale, credo, l'ascolto.
Took some finesse but the calves thought they would be tricksie and came home with the goats last Sunday- Acorn quickly closed a gate behind them, got them separated into the round pen and cheered! Let the weaning begin! Calpurnia, Lulu and Pi shuffled on down and over the next day. After 5 days with no ill effects, the buyers for SteelMeadow's Piper, the last heifer, was loaded into a trailer to join her half sister and 30 other head of Irish Dexters outside Kansas City. Now Blind Hog and Acorn can focus on goats and kidding to begin- looking at behaviors, one or two are beginning to "mumble..." Talking to kids in utero...Yet more exciting futbol on the telly, weather has also been mild. Finally got a good soaking rain. For the first time all summer the dry creek has water flowing and the dredging by the county is working a treat! No flooding up in the road!Influenza is really hitting the Ozarks hard- neighbor's son is in the ICU, folks all around are feeling/getting sick. Get yer jabs, people... Not too late!
Calpurnia brings the kids with her to church since Atticus will stay away for some days due to work.

Harper Lee - To Kill A Mockingbird - Episode 2 - Innocence, Motifs And The Power Of Language! Hi, I'm Christy Shriver, and we're here to discuss books that have changed the world and have changed us. I'm Garry Shriver, and this is the How to Love Lit Podcast. This is our second episode over that great American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. Last week, we introduced our author and both of her published books. We compared them briefly, looked at the titles of each, and then focused more specifically on the origins and inspirations of Mockingbird. We looked at Lee's historical moment and argued that Lee's novel, although set in the 1930s was far more interested in the world of the 1950s than the 1930s- a world struggling with civil rights. We will develop the theme of racial injustice in the second part of the book, of course, but today as we lay the ground work for that part, we will continue our focus on part 1. Last episode we ended our discussion talking about Maycomb, the tired old town where Lee set her story, a town which could be seen more like a character than an actual place. Maycomb is a broken place and this brokenness is on display in several ways. Part one only hints at the racial division that is the focus of the second section but that doesn't mean it isn't setting us up for it. Lee carefully introduces several major themes and motifs then she proceeds to developed throughout and beyond the trial. These themes should be considered as we read the section part of the book, for one reason because they provide a framework from which we should understand the insanity of the trial and its aftermath. If you can't understand Maycomb, you would not believe such a facade of a trial could even be possible. So, Christy, can we say the primary role of section one is foreshadowing, then? No. I would absolutely say not the primary role. There is forshadowing, for sure, and it surfaces in many different ways, but it's the the primary role. Harper Lee is laying the framework for a larger discussion than race. Race is the context, but she is framing the racial discussion that will come. Maycomb is the microcosm of society at large- any society, not just the segregated South of her days. The disease of racism, and she does call it a disease, has several causes, and it's the cause of this disease that she's exploring. The first half is charming and disarming. It's less intense and emotionally jarring than the second. The language gets more offensive the closer we get to part two, but she's setting us up for how she wants us to understand the racism we will soon be exposed to, and what she thinks we can and should do to address it. Her argument is nuanced and much of it is delivered through the words of Atticus and Calpurnia, although Uncle Jack and Miss Maudie weigh in as well. It's illustrated through the actions of the children as they interact with the different groups in their community: the Cunninghams, the Radleys, The Ewell's and Mrs. Dubose. Lee explicitly discusses man's relationship with power, its use and abuse of it, She blatantly spells out for us what a mockingbird symbolically represents and the principle protecting the innocent. Atticus not only tells his children to learn to understanding the lived experience of those around them, but forces this lesson upon them in what comes across as a very cruel way to learn a life lesson. The setting of part 1 is the playful existence of childhood innocence, but as we walk with Scout, we are to learn these same life-lessons before she forces us to apply them in this adult world of experience which is cruel and ruthless in many ways.
Calpurnia has had her last calf, which will in turn be the last to be born on the farm. No more breeding cows, these last three geriatric girls have earned their retirement.Chores have been done, fruit is ripening on the trees, and four bouncy calves grace the paddocks.First batch of kids went to market, prices are holding.Weather has been gorgeous, just enough rain to keep things green without any recent flooding. Hot damn!
Working working working... Blind Hog and Acorn have been earning their bread labor since the rains decided to stop. Full days outside working in the garden, brush hogging the fields. sorting goats, moving goslings around. Days being longer just means they just keep going...Lupine had her final calf, and after watching her push a few times with nothing to show for it, Acorn had to pull a "James Herriott" and reach inside (up to her armpit) to see what was the problem. No front feet or nose, but a bum with back legs tucked under its body. Acorn had to grab each back hoof and ease it out and when both feet were showing Lupine gave some mighty pushes and out plopped a lovely dun bull calf. Phew!Garden is "getting there." Goslings love their new LARGE area and even "self loaded" into their night-time pen this evening. Only one cow left to calve, our dear Calpurnia. She is bagging up, so it won't be long.
A productive week on the farm~ Blind Hog and Acorn repaired the F350's tie rod ends! Was the picture perfect set up of a 20 yr old truck up on jack stands in the front yard. Once the pair of farmers got started, it was "just that easy."Road Commissioner has promised to send a road grader, but the county is so big and the tax base so small, they are not expecting much.Blind Hog got the three paddocks of the west field clipped, broom sedge is now mowed and the field all leveled out. Grass is already much greener where the livestock are not grazing so yes- the grass is greener on the other side of the fence!Goat kids are bouncing around, 43 "tighty whities" running here and there. Still have a few more goats to kid. Now for the cows- this may be Lulu and Calpurnia's last calving. At 16, their arthritis is really slowing them both down.Ethel is is in "egg mode," laying an egg every other day. 4 in the nest. Acorn will wait for a few more more eggs and then will steal four for the incubator. Will see if the pair can raise any goslings. Last year none of her eggs hatched and the attrition from black snakes eating her eggs was high.
Aaron Sorkin's award-winning adaptation of much-loved Harper Lee novel To Kill A Mockingbird, is finally coming to London's Gielgud Theatre. In this week's Chops, Jen catches up with Pamela Nomvete and Gwyneth Keyworth, who play Calpurnia and Scout in the new production, to find out what it's like to play such beloved roles, how Sorkin has brought the play into the 21st century, and whether or not Scout is a revolutionary, rather than simply an innocent narrator.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. We will also discuss trade, slavery, travel and other aspects of life in a distant corner of Europe in the era of a Roman Empire that was falling apart and it wasn't quite clear what would replace it.•With that, here is the next piece of the mosaic of the history of the Popes of Rome and Christian Church.[00:00:00] Let's get it. There's I have a couple of more questions about that diffusion, but I think it'll, we'll have a better picture if we talk about kind of the, the big player that everybody's probably been waiting for and that's Patrick or St. Patrick, as he's also called, who was Patrick and how did he make his impact on how Christianity spread throughout Ireland?Yeah. So one thing that's really fantastic about Patrick is that we have two works that are his own writings, and this is almost unheard of. We have so little personal writings from. The Atlantic islands in this period. I mentioned Gilda's previously, but he's after Patrick, even. So it it's amazing that we've got this from Patrick, although it was very purposefully preserved at our ma and we'll probably get into that a little bit.So we've got his confession and his letter to Corona. [00:01:00] K. No, the earliest version of the confession survives in the ninth century book of our ma uh, it appears to be a document written by Patrick in his old age, as he reflects upon his life and his actions, and seems to be a response to some unnamed detractors who appear to level accusations against him for poor behavior. Now, this is. We really think of when we're thinking of the great Patrick these days? No, not at all. So you can see this level of defensiveness that runs through the entire piece. He even tells us specifically the quote that he long thought to write. But up to now, he has hesitated because he feared what people would say.And quote, and if you're reading interested in reading the full confession for yourself, it's available in translation online at confess CEO dot I E, [00:02:00] and the letter to Kuroda kisses there as well. But I don't think we'll have time to get into the letter today. Would they have been written in Latin? Yes.So you can see the original, if you want to try yourself at some Latin it's there in, in the original Latin, but they've also got it translated into a few different languages, which is so fantastic. Sure. We'll dive into this in later times, but how much were, what somebody of like, um, Patrick or, and that meantime have written in Irish, would that have been done at all or was everything pretty well, Latin eyes?A lot of it is going to be Latin. We get written Irish after exposure to Latin. So it, I like to think of it as someone's like, this is really great that we can write this down. So let's do that with our own language too. And it's really thanks to the Irish in large part that. We have so much [00:03:00] about what it was like to learn Latin, because we have all of these Latin primers and study books basically about how to learn Latin that were written by the Irish. And it's really cool, I think. Yeah, absolutely. And I think we'll probably wind up getting into that a lot more because that's going to affect things later on. Yeah. I mean, it seems obvious that Patrick probably would've learned Irish. You know, he spent six years as a slave. He tells us, and it would be really hard to communicate with anyone if you didn't have any shared language and.As many years as he has meant to have spent as an adult in Ireland, he, he must have taken up language ability during that time. But I want to back up a little bit and get to the beginning of Patrick. So he gives us a little bit of information about himself in his confession. He tells us his father's name was Calpurnia [00:04:00] and that his father was a deacon. His grandfather's name. and he was a priest. He tells us that his family lived near a village called , which was where he was taken from when he was 16. And while this is fantastic information that we frequently yearned for in early sources, the sad news is that we have. No idea where ban of him to Bernie, I was meant to be.And that has engendered lots of discussion on the possible locations that run the gamut from Wales to England and even into Southern Scotland. We also don't have anything concrete by which to reckon his year of birth. And there has been much additional discussion on that. Uh, and just to round out this early picture of Patrick, he tells us that he wasn't particularly religious as a youth.I think that's fascinating [00:05:00] that, um, and it's gotta be so frustrating when you read a document and it's probably when they wrote it, everybody knew whereOr was, and now, you know, why would they ever write down? Oh yeah, well, it's next to this or that. And now it's completely gone. The same thing happens to us with Gilda's. He tells us that he was born very specific number of years after the battle of Mount Baden. But, uh, we don't know when that was so.Thanks. Gilda's yeah, yeah. Again, everybody knew when the battle was, well, why bother writing it down 1500 years later? Not so much. Yeah, exactly. So then getting into, now we know a little bit about Patrick's background. What was that next phase of his life? Yeah. So, uh, I think it's worth mentioning that just kind of can dealing Patrick together that he probably lived in the fifth century, a D he was the son of a [00:06:00] Romanized Britain and nominally, a third generation Christian. He was also sufficiently educated. To be able to write in Latin, which as we've already mentioned is the language that he, his two texts are in. So he worked as a shepherd in Ireland for six years as a slave, once he was captured. And he only tells us that it was in a wooded area near the Western sea. And for that reason it's location also.Elusive.

Publius Servilius Casca högg först i Caesars skuldra. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression in 1930's and is narrated by the main character, a little girl named Jean Louise Finch, who is referred to as “Scout”. Throughout the story. Through her neighborhood meanderings and the influence of her father, she grows to understand that the world isn't always fair and that prejudice is a very real aspect of the small town where she lives, no matter how subtle it appears to be on the surface. As the story begins, Scout, Jem, and Dill are intrigued by the reclusive Boo. He lives close to the Finch's house and local legend has it that he once stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors. They imagine him as a kind of monster. The children enact little dramas about Boo's life. They start to venture closer to the Radley house, which is said to be haunted. Then they try leaving notes for Boo on his windowsill with a fishing pole but are caught by Atticus. He firmly reprimands them for making fun of a sad man's life. The children continue to sneak around the Radley house at night. Boo's brother thinks he hears a prowler and fires his gun. The children run away, but Jem loses his pants in a fence. When he returns in the middle of the night to get them back, they have been neatly folded and the tear from the fence roughly sewn up. Other mysterious things begin to happen to the Finch children. A tree near the Radley house has a knot-hole in which someone leaves little presents for them. The children find pennies, chewing gum, and soap-carved figures that bear a striking resemblance to Scout and Jem. When the children try to leave a note for the mystery giver, they find that Boo's brother has plugged up the hole with cement. One day, Jem invites one of his poorest classmates, Walter Cunningham, over for lunch. At the Finch house, Scout notes that Atticus and Walter discuss farming “like two men.” Walter asks for some molasses and proceeds to pour it all over his meat and vegetables. When Scout rudely asks what in the ‘sam hill' he is doing, Calpurnia gives her a lecture in the kitchen about how to treat guests—no matter what their background. Meanwhile, Atticus decides to take on a case involving a black man named Tom Robinson who has been falsely accused of raping a very poor white girl named Mayella Ewell. The Finch family faces harsh criticism in the heavily racist Maycomb because of Atticus's decision to defend Tom. Atticus believes both that Tom is innocent and that he has almost no chance at an acquittal; the white jury will never believe a black man over a white woman. Despite this, Atticus seeks to reveal the truth to his fellow townspeople. Because Atticus is defending a black man, Scout and Jem are the object of the townspeople's whispers and ridicule. At a family Christmas gathering, Scout beats up her cloying relative Francis when he accuses Atticus of ruining the family with a very ill name.

As he set about adapting “To Kill a Mockingbird” for the stage—the play opened this week on Broadway—Aaron Sorkin first wrote a version that he says was very much like the novel, but “with stage directions.” As he delved into the character of Atticus Finch, though, he found himself troubled. The small-town lawyer is tolerant, but too tolerant, tolerant of everything, including the violent racism of many of his neighbors—which he attempts to understand rather than condemn. And Sorkin felt that Lee's two black characters, the maid Calpurnia and the falsely accused Tom Robinson, had no real voice in the book. “I imagine that, in 1960, using African-American characters as atmosphere is the kind of thing that would go unnoticed by white people,” he tells David Remnick. “In 2018, it doesn't go unnoticed, and it's wrong, and it's also a wasted opportunity.” Sorkin's changes in his adaptation led to a lawsuit from Harper Lee's literary executor, who had approved him as the playwright but placed specific conditions on the faithfulness of his script. In Sorkin's view, the criticisms of the executor, Tonja Carter, were tantamount to racism. He thinks they reinforced the lack of voice and agency of black people in the South in the nineteen-thirties. (Carter declined to comment on Sorkin's remarks.) The two sides eventually reached a settlement, in May, and the play proceeded to production. Sorkin says that, of his own volition, he cut some of his lines that hinted too broadly at the political realities of America under Donald Trump. But Atticus Finch's realization—that the people in his community whom he thought he knew best, he never really knew at all—mirrors the experience of many Americans since 2016.
