A (relatively) in-depth analysis of American singer-songwriter Natalie Prass in (just over) fifteen minutes.Prass grew up in Virginia, where she met fellow musician Matthew E. White. They played in a band together in the early 2000s, then White moved to Richmond to study jazz. Prass' own journey took her to Berklee and Middle Tennessee State before she settled in Nashville. Eventually she reconnected with White, who was still based in Richmond and was working toward the launch of a record label called Spacebomb. The rest, as they say, is history...In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.A huge thank you to the wonderful Heather Murray.https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. In episode #131 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar meets Dan Croll to discuss his latest album, Fools. Returning to his familiar haunt Montrose Recording in Richmond, VA, where he also recorded his 2020 LP Grand Plan, Dan Croll has now stepped into the role of co-producer this time around alongside his regular recording partner, Spacebomb's Matthew E. White. Fools finds Dan Croll at a crossroads, documenting recent events with warmth and wit to help him decide which direction to take. Five years after leaving his beloved Liverpool for sun-soaked L.A., a move made on a whim, which transformed his sound, Fools poses a fundamental question - is it finally time to come home? In this interview, Dan talks about writing and recording Fools, meeting Sir Paul McCartney, his time in La, whether he is a Blue or a Red, and much more. "Anything that knocks ya out, hits you harder than you planned," sings Matthew E. White on "Genuine Hesitation," which opens K Bay, the third solo album from the Spacebomb founder. And it's a knockout of a record, to be sure. A spirited producer and collaborator known for his efforts with Natalie Prass, Mountain Goats, Flo Morrissey, Sharon Van Etten and many more, the album finds him situating his traditional song craft in a future funk and avant-pop setting. On today's episode of Aquarium Drunkard's Transmissions podcast, he joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss the album, as well as his duo recording with former guest Lonnie Holley, Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection, which serves as a mutated musical twin to K Bay. Along the way, he touches on his communal approach, Miles Davis, his youth in the Philippines, and the transcendent qualities of The Flamingo's "I Only Have Eyes For You."

His meld of heavy beats, lo-fi, and indie rock stylings have gained great attention from some important names over the past several months, and he lined up a great playlist of influences and songs he's personally worked on in the studio. Mad Professor, Suzanne Ciani, Matthew E. White and Georgia Anne Muldrow discuss how listening to music lets you travel through time, packaging their work into album form, and which part of the music-making process they enjoy the most. Matthew E. White is a singer, songwriter, producer, and arranger from Richmond, Virginia. He blends folk, gospel, AOR, rock, disco, and psychedelic sounds. He's also worked with the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Bedouine, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, and Slow Club. Suzanne Ciani is a Grammy-nominated composer, musician, and sound designer. In the 1970s, she invented the world famous ‘pop and pour' sound effect for Coca Cola. In 1980, she was the first woman hired to score a major Hollywood feature when she composed the music for The Incredible Shrinking Woman. She's also a recipient of the Moog Innovation Award for her work with synthesizers, and is a former host of this very show. Georgia Anne Muldrow is an influential part of Los Angeles' hip-hop, jazz, and soul scenes. She's released more than 20 albums, and has appeared on tracks with Erykah Badu, Blood Orange, and Robert Glasper. Mos Def is a fan, saying “she's something else… like Roberta Flack, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald”. Mad Professor is a legendary dub reggae producer and engineer. Born in Guyana, he was nicknamed Mad Professor due to his fascination with electronics, and when he moved to London he collected mixing and recording equipment to make his first studio in his living room. Since then he's released hundreds of recordings and worked with artists including Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly & Robbie, Grace Jones, Massive Attack, and Sade, before setting up the largest Black-owned studio complex in the UK.

Matthew E. White's new album, K Bay, is a wildly diverse record that has no regard for current trends. But then that's how Matthew has run his career from day one. Not only is he a musician, he is also the founder of the Spacebomb music company, which has released albums by artists like Natalie Prass, Bedouine and Nadia Reid, and become one of the most well regarded independent music companies around. We talk about that whole ride in this interview, as well as Matthew's upbringing in the Philippines and Japan, his path into music, and much, much more.

Matthew E White is a jack of all trades. A producer hailing from Richmond, Virginia, he's worked with everyone from Sharon Van Etten to Natalie Prass, Justin Vernon to The Mountain Goats. A few years ago he set up Spacebomb, a studio and label which also acts as a community space for artists to experiment. This all feeds off his own work, as a multi-instrumentalist, former jazz player, and songwriter for whom music has no boundaries. In short, Matt is the kinda guy you love to get stuck talking to in the kitchen at a house party, which I why I asked him to Take 5. ESG - You're No Good Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown Miles Davis - Rated X Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night) Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (the Ecology)

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Stephen Thompson | Aug, 10, 2021 Flock of Dimes may be a "solo" project for Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, but she couldn't pass up an opportunity to invite a few friends over. You'll spot their familiar faces all over this video: Mountain Man's Amelia Randall Meath, Molly Sarlé and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, percussionist Matthew McCaughan from Bon Iver... you even get full attendance from Sylvan Esso, given that Meath is seated alongside her partner Nick Sanborn. (He doesn't play in the set, but he did co-produce Flock of Dimes' latest album, so Wasner asked him to sit in and bring a book to read.) The result is a communal set — filmed at Sylvan Esso's new studio in Durham, N.C., called Betty's — that doesn't merely re-create three of the songs from this year's Head of Roses. These acoustic performances actually shed new light, thanks to radiant and radically different arrangements, while fully capturing the warmth we look for from Tiny Desk concerts. (Plus, with nine people in the frame, it's a cast large enough that when they clap between songs, they almost sound like a crowd.) SET LIST * "Two" * "Price Of Blue" * "Awake For The Sunrise" MUSICIANS * Jenn Wasner: vocals, guitar (Flock of Dimes) * Amelia Randall Meath: backing vocals (Mountain Man, Sylvan Esso) * Alexandra Sauser-Monnig: backing vocals (Mountain Man, Daughter of Swords) * Molly Sarlé: backing vocals (Mountain Man) * Joe Westerland: percussion (Megafaun) * Matthew McCaughan: percussion (Bon Iver) * Alan Good Parker: guitar (Natalie Prass, Matthew E. Estamos de estreno con Colectivo da Silva y Karavana. He has composed music for Bon Iver, Kanye West, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Hiss Golden Messenger, among others, as well as contributed to studio recordings for Bruce Hornsby, Amy Ray (The Indigo Girls), The Mountain Goats, Kathleen Edwards, Matthew E White and more. I first saw Phil live at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival back in 2019. He also performed with Hiss Golden Messenger. I had been a fan of both Phil and HGM for a while, so finally getting to see both of them live was a real treat. He has a great energy surrounding him both as a performer and a person. When he speaks, he does so with passion and gratitude. In our conversation, we talk about how his priorities have changed since COVID first started, and what it means to walk the line between celebrating and appropriating your influences. We also chat about an exciting new solo album he's been working on. # Pasamos a la segunda canción, “The Break of Dawn”, del disco It’s Holidays.
