One day last fall, multiplatinum recording artist K.Flay woke up deaf in her right ear — hearing loss that she later learned was permanent. Suddenly losing half your hearing is traumatic for anyone, but what if you make your living as a musician? The only thing our guest, K.Flay, could think to do was head to the studio and start making music, which was difficult with all the sensory changes she was experiencing. However, in a story of resilience and internal fortitude, K.Flay pressed onward. Listen as she shares her emotions and story and how that led to her latest album, MONO. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our Guest is based in LA and originally from Illinois. Welcome multiplatinum artist K.Flay, born Kristine Flaherty, started rapping and writing songs on a lark while attending Stanford University and soon began releasing her self-produced mixtapes. In 2017, she released her major label debut album “Every Where Is Some Where,” earning two GRAMMY Award nominations for the album's iconic smash single “Blood in the Cut'' and sending her to arenas around the world with her kinetic live set. As a songwriter, musician, and producer, she's lent her talents to numerous collaborations, working with Fitz and the Tantrums, Bishop Briggs, Tom Morello, Louis the Child, Kaskade, Walk the Moon, Imagine Dragons, grandson, The Regrettes, Two Feet, MisterWives, and more. Whether working on her music or with others, K.Flay's output remains rooted in her undeniable lyrical skills, an element she attributes to her innate love of language and its infinite possibilities. This spring, she announced her fifth studio album MONO — due out September 15th. The LP is her first for Giant Music and is her first since going suddenly and completely deaf in her right ear at the end of last summer. Although K.Flay's hearing loss deeply informed her songwriting on MONO, the album marks the start of a new era for the artist who explores an entire spectrum of existential questions and complex matters of the heart and mind on the LP. Additionally, K.Flay wrote an original song “T-Rex” for Neflix's groundbreaking new animated film “Nimona” which was released last month. A relentlessly boundary-pushing artist with more than 1 BILLION streams and 100K+ tickets sold, K.Flay continues to commit herself to constant growth by holding herself to higher and more rigorous standards in every aspect of her artistry. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jules Paymer over Zoom video!Jules Paymer recently released their single and music video for, "The Daughter That My Mother Wanted" featuring celebrated artist Miki Ratsula. The song and video touch upon the experience of being non-binary and queer and the difficulties that can arise with feeling like you don't belong or are letting your family down by being yourself. At the age of 7, Jules Paymer (they/them) found their love for music playing bass in a garage band in their hometown of Los Angeles, CA, alongside Lydia Night, the future star of “The Regrettes”. They soon learned guitar and piano, and by age 9, they were writing full songs. After finishing high school in LA, Jules moved to Nashville to hone their craft in a city they call ‘Songwriting Bootcamp'. They emerged with bold, lyric heavy songs with powerful themes and concepts exploring the world through new eyes.Coming out in 2018 at the age of 18, first to their friends, Jules wrestled with the nature of explaining their ‘status' to their family. “Relationships and sex are difficult enough to speak about with family, let alone your preferences on those matters. I kept thinking, ‘Do I really have to make an announcement?'”Settling back in Los Angeles in the summer of 2022, Jules turned their attention to making friends, writing songs, and exploring their unique perspective through the prism of the modern music industry. Their original songs and song flips caught traction on social media, piquing the interest of artists including Fletcher, Noah Kahan, Joshua Bassett, and Royal and The Serpent. “Past Life,” a song about an ex who refused to acknowledge Jules' pronouns after they came out as nonbinary, sparked contentious debate online, making Jules a target for both praise and hate speech.Jules kicked off their 2023 releases with “The Daughter That My Mother Wanted,” a collaboration with Miki Ratsula, followed by singles “Mommy Issues” and “Girls Will Be Boys,” culminating in their 5 track debut EP “Girls Will Be Boys” out now!We want to hear from you! Merrill Nisker (born 11 November 1966), better known by her stage name Peaches, is a Canadian electroclash musician and producer who burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of cocksure rapping and groovebox beats. Peaches was an unlikely success story, making her musical mark after the age of 30 in a genre not commonly known for recognizing its female or its aging participants. Her unique rapping style and stage show brought her great popularity first in Europe and then in North America. Some of her lyrics and performances have been rejected due to them being potentially offensive, and a lot of her songs are themed on gender identity. Her work propagates sexual freedom and reversal of gender roles. In this episode Peaches selecting some of her favourite music for her Wise Women BBC Radio 6 Music takeover on December 2015. As broadcast April 12, 2022 with plenty of indie healing for your podcast experience. Tonight we start the show marking this date in 2015 at Coachella, where a rather overenthusiastic Florence Welch dove off the stage and broke her ankle. However, to her infinite credit, she did perform the rest of the tour although bound to a chair, which most artists would not do. This evening also marked Kat Bass taking over the reigns of our Under The Radar indie weekly, with choice selections for the majority of the gig. Cuts from Wet Leg, POND, and Maggie Rogers were the highlights, but there's so much more inside if you take the safe dive with us.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Florence + The Machine – My LoveRolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – My EchoMaggie Rogers – That's Where I AmWallice – 90s American SuperstarSOAK – purgatoryTOPS – Perfected StepsPart II (36:26)almost monday - sunburn Will Joseph Cook - Little MissAlexander 23 - CrashThe Regrettes - Nowhere Yot Club - u dont kno meGracie Abrams - Block me outPart III (64:50)Chloe Moriondo - nice pupVance Joy - ClarityBarrie - QuarrySevdaliza - High AloneBLUE ROOM - hope everything finds their colorLizzy McAlpine ft. Ted Stryker welcomes the smart and talented frontwoman Lydia Night from The Regrettes to the Tuna on Toast Studio. Please keep in mind, this podcast was recorded/filmed way back early November! The episode starts with Stryker telling Lydia how much he still appreciates the birthday call from Lydia back in 2019. They discuss writing the new songs and how emotional it was because of how honest and authentic the lyrics are. Lydia talks about writing over zoom and going with the band to Joshua Tree to write and record! The band ended up writing ten songs in ten days! Lydia tells Stryker about writing and recording the song "Monday" as well as chatting about Olivia Rodrigo making an appearance in the video. Lydia talks about how the current lineup of The Regrettes met and came to be. The Regrettes are a four piece consisting of Lydia, Genessa Gariano, Brooke Dickson and Drew Thomsen. Lydia tells Stryker about a band she was in at a very young age called Pretty Little Demons, they played the South by Southwest Music Festival. This was a really good band that wrote songs and toured, Lydia was only 12 years old! Lydia talks about opening for Peaches as well! Stryker and Lydia discuss another band she was in called Dead Man's Bones that Ryan Gosling was a part of as well as Zach Shields. Lydia talks about the new album Further Joy (which is not released as of today!) and what those two words mean to her. Lydia is open and honest about anxiety, depression and mental health. Lydia talks Coachella 2022 as well as touring! Make sure to catch The Regrettes on tour and support this amazing group. Thank you as always for watching and listening to another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker.

As broadcast April 19, 2021. After a huge weekend of releases, there was a lot to go through, but to start, we remembered a guy whose sax & flute stylings featured on some of the biggest albums ever throughout his career. Steve Douglas was a legend of the game, who unfortunately passed on this date in 1993 while warming up for a Ry Cooder concert. From here, we went through some of the massive tunes & albums out this weekend, whether it was singles from Lucy Dacus & Chari Adams or cover & remix albums from Paul McCartney & Sharon Van Etten, there was some great music hitting the stores & streams this weekend.#feelthegravityPart I (00:00)The Beach Boys – I Know There's An AnswerLucy Dacus – Hot & HeavyCharli Adams – Cheer CaptainEKKSTACY feat herhexx – i want to be by your side Fred again… - Angie (I've Been Lost)JAWNY – Best ThingPart II (30:03)Paul McCartney – Seize The Day (Phoebe Bridgers vers)Paul McCartney – Pretty Boys (Khruangbin vers)Jose Gonzalez – Visions Twin Shadow – AlemaniaLord Huron – Long LostSharon Van Etten – Save Yourself (Lucinda Williams vers) Part III (61:32)Zara Larsson - Look What You've DoneJustin Bieber ft.
