This week, we're winding back the clock to 2014 when our perennial fav boy band BAD SUNS released their debut LP 'Language & Perspective'! Throughout our track-by-track, we discuss the mature themes of this record written by high-schoolers, the speed at which it's aged (see: molasses level), the existential crises (plural) abound the album, and how this debut contextualizes the records that came after it. ALSO discussed: KATY PERRY's confidently sexy new single 'Woman's World' (and the fire it lit online) as well as JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE's recent trouble with the law (stream Criminal by Britney Spears)! At the SPA: HALSEY (The End), METTE (Bet), SAY NOW (Bitch Get Out My Car), FLORRIE (The Lost Ones), REMI WOLF (Motorcycle), PALE WAVES (Perfume), ST. LUCIA (Back To You), and TOVE LO & SG LEWIS (Heat). NEXT WEEK: 'Elle' by DAGNY!
This week, we're dialing the alt-pop phasers to FIRE as we submit ourselves to BILLIE EILISH and discuss her 3rd LP 'Hit Me Hard and Soft'. Throughout our track-by-track, we dive into the textured nature of the tracks, the journey they take you on in the order they are presented, the idea of writing an oral lesbian anthem with your brother, and of course, we attempt to determine our favorite tracks! ALSO discussed: KATY PERRY's *interesting* rollout choices thus far and new albums from CHARLI XCX (Brat), DAGNY (Elle), & AURORA (What Happened to the Heart?). At the SPA: SABRINA CARPENTER (Please Please Please, ADAM LAMBERT (Wet Dream), AURORA (To Be Alright), KISSISSIPPI (Last Time), GRACIE ABRAMS (Close to You), RAYE (Genesis), and ORVILLE PECK, KYLIE MINOGUE & DIPLO (Midnight Ride). NEXT WEEK: 10 Years of BAD SUNS' debut 'Language & Perspective'.

Classic example of "you never know where your next podcast guest is going to come from"! The guys were joined this week by Aaron Goldstein, PG a regional department manager of UES' Virtual Design Consulting (VDC) department. Aaron is a geophysicist and technology integration expert with specific specialties at evaluating subsurface conditions . His expertise includes leading geophysical campaigns to characterize the subsurface and innovating new approaches to resolving unknown below-grade conditions. He assists and advises clients to avoid potential geological hazards such as buried debris and unknown buried assets. Oh, and he also attended North Carolina State University where the campus dance is apparently the "chicken dance"! Rob Mooers, LSIT was our guest co-host and did not disappoint! Henry Petroski was quoted. Music by Bad Suns!
This week I have Singer/Songwriter Christo Bowman from the band Bad Suns, we met each other recently at a mutual friends birthday and decided to hang out and get to know each other a little better, I learn about his story and more on this weeks episode.

With winter officially eight days away, the sports world perpetually keeps us warm and toasty as another podcast kicks off your week with plenty to delve into. On deck: (2:57) NFL Week 14 didn't pack a lot of intrigue or suspense, but there has been some movement as teams try to make a run to the postseason, where others are flailing as they try to hang on for their dear lives. I'll go through my winners (i.e. Lions & Chargers) and losers (i.e. Raiders & Seahawks) I'll recap where we're at as we're approaching the final quarter of the season as certain teams in the AFC (Dolphins, Chargers, Jets, Patriots) and NFC (Giants, Commanders, Seahawks, even Lions) do their best to make a push to get to January playing in meaningful games. (31:12) Army wins in the first ever OT game vs. rival Navy to where the Midshipmen fired their head coach. USC QB, Caleb Williams is your Heisman Trophy Winner. Now it's onto the Bowls, but I'll explain why I won't go full bore on the entire schedule and just focus on the College Football Playoff? (33:22) The MLB Hot Stove has cooled off a little bit since the craziness at the Winter Meetings last week. But don't say that to Mets owner, Steve Cohen. He's continued to add to his already exorbitant payroll, re-signing OF Brandon Nimmo to an eight year, $162 million dollar contract. They've also agreed to sign the best Japanese pitcher out there in Kodai Senga to a five year, $75 million dollar deal. Is this what the Met fan (like myself) has been waiting for? Spending in free agency for a better shot at winning that elusive World Series? Or have they sold their souls to the devil that could end up a lot worse than the fan could ever expect? (43:21) Is there a budding rivalry taking place in the NBA? The Suns and Pelicans played two back to back, hard fought competitive games that the Pels won. In the first game, it led to a fracas as Zion Williamson added a thunderous 360 slam dunk before the buzzer when the game was already over. There is one more matchup this season later in the month, so we shall see. The Warriors had their most complete game in an NBA Finals rematch against the Celtics. And sad news as longtime NBA player and coach, Paul Silas, passed away at the age of 73. (47:45) As for what's happening on the ice, Kris Letang returns to the Penguins lineup, just twelve days after suffering his second stroke. The Pens are on a hot streak going 13-2-2 over the past 17 games. Alexander Ovechkin is now up to 797 goals, but the last four of them, have been empty netters. They do count, but some people feels they're cheapies. Are they right? (50:22) Brittney Griner has finally made it to US soil late last week. It's been polarizing for a lot of citizens in this country regarding her exchange with the Merchant of Death, Viktor Bout and not have US Marine, Paul Whelan tag along with her. Will Griner be a catalyst, as she has stated, in doing her best to bring Whelan back home? (54:31) We're now down to the Final Four in the World Cup as it's Morocco-France & Argentina-Croatia. Will the Cinderella Morocco team be able to get to a Final? Can France make it two in a row? And have a rematch against Croatia in the Final? We had the pleasure of interviewing girlfriends over Zoom video!Pop-punk duo girlfriends (Travis Mills + Nick Gross)announce their new album (e)motion sickness out June 17th via Big Noise and release two exhilarating new tracks, "High Again" and "Toaster for a Swim." “High Again” mixes different contradictions with a lyrical playfulness akin to Panic! At The Disco and begins with a simple guitar strum, while “Toaster For A Swim” takes the drama of a breakup and turns it up to 11 with a fiery blend of riffs and breathy vocals.(e)motion sickness is the highly anticipated follow-up to the bands' self-titled debut, which was produced by John Feldmann (5 Seconds Of Summer, blink-182, The Used), and included standout tracks like “California,” “Where Were You” (featuring Travis Barker), and “Jessica.” Girlfriends conjure songs that are once pleasingly familiar, warmly unique and passionately vulnerable and (e)motion sickness is just that.“This is the most vulnerable I've been through my music,” Mills says. “The music I made in the past was fun, but it wasn't an accurate representation of anything I was going through in my life. I had profound experiences and tragic losses, but I didn't talk about them. I struggled with severe anxiety and depression. So, there's a lot in girlfriends' songs that I've never said before. This kind of music really allows those topics to come to life and accentuate them.”The two new tracks follow “Missing You” and “Pretty Mouth,” which will also be included on the new album. Channeling the anguish of a breakup into a pure cathartic release, the tracks soar with molten intensity. Praised by Alternative Press, SPIN Magazine, Loudwire and more, girlfriends make music both timely and timeless, while providing a fresh twist to the caffeinated pop-punk they grew up on. In concert, the duo are a live force to be reckoned with. With their energy being magnified tenfold live, girlfriends have sold out venues like The Roxy in Los Angeles and and recently shared the stage with Bad Suns at The Fonda and The Observatory, Santa Ana. Stay tuned for additional tour dates into 2022. We want to hear from you! James and Connor better put on their Baby Blue Shades, because Bad Suns are in store this week! Our next A&R Department recommendation, their brand new album Apocalypse Whenever, is taking us to the Electric Circus and back into the wide world of modern alt-pop. This "soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist yet" is a constant tug-of-war between bright music and dismal lyrics. The Mixtaper's bringing us more mysteries of a missing EP, the Watermelon Crawl, and even common allergies! If you've been Silently Screaming, maybe Heaven Can Be A Place In Your Head with this week's episode in your ears.Keep Spinning at www.SpinItPod.com !Thanks for listening! Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Stryker welcomes Chris "Christo" Bowman and Gavin Bennett from Bad Suns to the Tuna on Toast Podcast Studio aka my second bedroom. Before the guys even get going, a chat about the decor in the room leads to a really funny chat about reality TV. From Flavor of Love to Real Chance of Love. Below Deck and Million Dollar Listing. Bad Suns released their 4th full length studio album called Apocalypse Whenever on January 28th 2022 (this chat was conducted in mid January) Gavin and Christo discuss meeting each other in 7th grade, playing gigs in high school. and the influence Blink 182 had on the band. This is a great refresher on the history of the band. Christo tells a great story about his Mom, who is a flight attendant, she gave a Bad Suns CD to a passenger on the plane who worked for Interscope Records, that CD ended up in the hands of their producer, Eric Palmquist. Gavin and Bennett also discuss signing with Epitaph Records, a label they have loved since before they had a record deal. Stryker, Gavin and Bennett talk about the Apocalypse Whenever infomercial and how it came to be. The guys also talk about the recent Angels and Airwaves tour and how cool Tom Delonge was to tour with for a variety of reasons which Christo reveals. A lot of ground is covered in this chat. Bad Suns are talented, and have a wonderful dedicated fan base that continues to grow. Sit back, relax and thanks for watching/listening to another episode of Tuna on Toast.

This week on Flashback Friday's, I'm highlighting a record from the year 2019. The band is called HUNNY, and their record is titled "Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes". I love this record. Hunny (stylized as HUNNY) is an American rock band from Newbury Park, California, formed in 2014. The band consists of Jason Yarger, Jake Goldstein, Kevin Grimmett, and Joey Anderson. Lead singer and guitarist Jason Yarger and bassist Gregory Horne had been friends since high school. After all the members had been in multiple bands around the local area (notably with other members of Bad Suns and The Neighbourhood), they decided to join forces and form Hunny in 2014. They released their first single "Honey Blonde". Their second single, "Cry For Me", was released in January 2015 and became a breakthrough hit, gaining over 1 million streams within a year. On 9 October 2015, they released their debut EP, Pain / Ache / Loving. In 2016, Hunny released the singles "Vowels (and The Importance of Being Me)" and "Colder Parts". Guitarist Jake Munk left the band in December 2016. In May 2017, Hunny released their second EP Windows I. In early 2018, bassist Gregory Horne left the band. Hunny signed to Epitaph Records in July 2018, before releasing their third EP Windows II. In May 2019, Hunny released their first full-length album, Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Hunny worked with producer Carlos de la Garza on the album.
In the second installment of a semi-regular series, I reveal 5 MORE essential alternative rock songs you've (likely) never heard before. As a self-proclaimed "music snob", I tend to fall in love with lesser-known bands, as I dive deep into their catalogs and search for the best songs that never see the light of day. These 5 songs were meticulously handpicked and I can't wait to share them (and many more) with you. Each track gets a small intro/synopsis and then you get to indulge in the ENTIRE SONG here on the pod. I'm proud of this series. Enjoy. Featuring music from: Jeremy Enigk, Swim Season, No Knife, Bad Suns and Mutemath. LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, SHARE...ANYWHERE YOU GET PODCASTS!
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ultra Q over Zoom video! Oakland-based four-piece band Ultra Q have released their new EP Get Yourself A Friend today (via Royal Mountain Records). Fronted by Jakob Armstrong and featuring brothers Enzo and Chris Malaspina as well as Kevin Judd, the new EP was co-produced by Armstrong and Martin Cooke (Of Monsters And Men, Death Cab For Cutie, Destroy Boys) and features songwriting from Stefan Babcock, lead singer of PUP. Click HERE to buy/stream Get Yourself A FriendClick HERE to watch the video for “Get Yourself A Friend” Ultra Q have also released the official music video for the title track today which was shot by Pennacky, the Japanese director behind all of the music videos for 88Rising's soundtrack for Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings. Upon meeting Armstrong and Pennacky immediately connected on their love of The Cure and a deep-cut video that inspired Pennacky to attach the camera to a rope for the new visual. Pennacky is also an avid fan of the Ultraman Sci-Fi series and drew from the original plot to shape the story of the video. Opening double-shot “Pupkin” and “It's Permanent” soar to the heights of Ultra Q's powers in much different ways; the former a black-clad romp through a rainy graveyard, the former pushing straight to the clouds with its soaring chorus. “Straight Jacket” veers pleasantly close to the jangle-pop of the Go-Betweens. “Bowman” features guitars like cats getting into a scratch-fight while an astoundingly metronomic drumbeat is played live rather than punched out on a beat pad. Closing the EP is its title track, an affecting end credits anthem full of nostalgia and a twinge of regret. On the song, which Babcock helped to arrange, Armstrong shares, “I think this track sums up what this EP is supposed to be, a coming-of-age farewell to our youth. It's about being young and in love. Being reckless, and overstimulated. Feeling like the tragedies in your life are permanent and without any direction. We've grown up, even if it's ever so slight.” As a whole, Get Yourself A Friend marks the synthesis of a songwriter's vision and his band's ability, forged through an invisible existential threat and an ever-changing world, eager to show what they've found while we were all inside. Ultra Q's previous EPs, In a Cave in a Video Game and We're Starting To Get Along, saw the band gain praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, NME, and Vice, in addition to leading to tours with The Regrettes, Hockey Dad, and Bad Suns. Jakob Armstrong—youngest son of Green Day frontman Billie Joe—began playing guitar at seven years old and honed his craft privately until about sixteen, playing in bands in and around Oakland after meeting friends with like-minded tastes in music. Soon enough, with the memories of Ultraman action figures fighting in his mind, he and a group of friends he cultivated from those years playing around and pouring over records, formed Ultra Q. The band will play Atlanta's Shaky Knees Festival in Spring 2022. We want to hear from you! Kios is an indie rock band out of Nashville, TN that has been described as joyous indie-pop, with vibrant and uplifting melodies hard to ignore. The 3 piece is made up of Cole (vocals/guitar), Aaron (drums), and Mitch (bass). Cole and Aaron met through a previous band that formed at Belmont University - Aaron and Mitch grew up together in Newark, Ohio; all 3 moved to Nashville in 2014 to pursue music. In the summer of 2017, the trio moved in together which sparked the idea of creating music. Cole decided to spend the summer in his hometown, Richmond, Virginia, where he began writing songs and recording demos for the project. The three sent demos back and forth, drawing in on their rock and pop backgrounds and thus, Kios began. They dropped their first single, “Be Loved” in March of 2018. The trio has been compared to names such as COIN, Colony House, Bad Suns, Two Door Cinema Club, and Phoenix. They plan to release an EP by the end of summer 2018.

Alright summer is here! That means lots of time outside, in the pool, and by the grill which obviously necessitates all kinds of new music. Today I have for you a sampling of different directions to go when you start thinking about what kind of summer music mix you are looking to go for. This is really one of my favorite types of podcasts. I've got the newest sounds I'm jamming combined with classics from my past. I actually had to order two physical compact discs because I couldn't find the albums digitally!! For me, last summer was all about the amazing albums from Quantic and Jungle mixed in with some afro funk and high life. Something tells me I am going to be doing some recycling of those but there are many solid additions to get into.As I write this I am remembering that I completely forgot to put a track from Clean Bandit on the mix. My bad!! Here's the track I was gonna use. "Come Over" Without it, the mix is missing that taste of dancehall, which is a summer must. They were amazing at Coachella. Watching them from the shade of the palm trees while they owned the mid day main stage is the definition of an ideal Coachella moment. I'll make it up to them on a podcast soon but you should check out their album New Eyes. Classically trained band playing their version of house music. So good. Links referenced in the podcast:Awesome unofficial Kaytranada videoThomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #1Thomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #2As a side note, I really try to keep all comments on the podcast positive but I must share my complete disdain for Adobe Audition's recording. I switched over from Audacity around podcast 30 or so because the sound processing tools were a little better. While I may still use it for post processing, never again will I trust it for recording the voice over. This is the second time that upon closing, Audition not only deleted all the temp files but also the sound files I had saved, multiple times. Searching around on the internet, I found I am not the only person to run into this serious issue. And even worse, this is the second time it's happened to me. Shame on me. Luckily, this time I had already exported a draft so I didn't have to rerecord the whole podcast but it means I didn't get to go back and balance all the levels just right, fix some plosives, etc... Anyway, if I hadn't said anything you probably wouldn't have noticed but I don't want any of y'all to run into this same problem. Use something else for recording. Now let's pump the positivity and get the jams goin!!Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronaaron@activelistenerpodcast.com Tracklist (these are links to buy the songs)1.Mabasa (Work) by Thomas Mapfumo on Mabasa2.Dancing On Quicksand by Bad Suns on Language & Perspective3.The Boys of Summer by The Ataris on So Long, Astoria4.Too Drunk to F*** by Nouvelle Vague on Nouvelle Vague5.Let It Carry You by José González on Vestiges & Claws6.Far Nearer by Jamie xx on Far Nearer / Beat For - EP7.Helios ft. Happy weekend everybody! As promised, I'm sending up the Autumn Mixtape 2 for your relaxation and pleasure. I'm thinking I should have been a little more original and called these Fall Chill, but I was in brain drain mode at the time. While equally as stimulating as the first, this set definitely pulls back the reigns for a steady stream of soul-satisfying atmospherics. The slow-moving beats of “Djon Maya Mai” by French duo Synapson kicks the set off and pretty much sets the mood thereafter. Each deep house, indie or nu-disco tune smoothly glides in and out of conscious creating the great escape from reality. Every song here is a standout but if I had to pick some jewels other than the first song, I'd definitely go with London Grammar‘s beautiful “Strong,” the indie to nu-disco “Salt” by Junior Sanchez & Bad Suns and the lilting elegance of “Simple Love” by Julio Bashmore with J Danna on vocals. Jessie Ware who was in my personal top ten for 2013, has been dropping some new singles and remixes of previous tunes since June. I'm not sure if these will be included on a new album but they are all so damn good it was hard to decide which one to pick. Ultimately, I went with the “Two Inch Punch Mix” of If You're Never Gonna Move just for its sheer beauty and a previous personal connection to the song. Jessie's highly anticipated new album Tough Love drops October 6th so be sure to keep your hearts and ears open. New comer's Superhand recently released their second single “Crystal Pianos.” The Anglo-Swedish duo is an experimental team dabbling in musical sounds that draw from rock, electronica, blues, and soul. At first listen, “Crystal Pianos” sounds like you just stepped onto the Dark Side of the Moon and Rachel Yamagata joined the fun by jamming on her piano. Clocking in at just under ten minutes, this one song allows Inga Calstrom and Leck Fischer to showcase their influences, which yielded this dark masterpiece. As usual, I like to mix things up with something a bit unexpected and always try to close these sets out with something upbeat. The Marlon Hoffstadt remix of Moon Boots' “Don't Ask Me Why” flips the original with an uplifting bounce. I like to call it the “carousel” mix. One listen and you'll get it. Finally, I closed the set with what I will say right here and now is (or should be IMHO) one of the best pop songs of the year but won't. The Knock's “Classic” truly is what its name implies. This disco-infused pop number is so perfect in every way that once you hear it you won't be able to shake it. Now folks, if this had major label support it'd be sitting at number one right now. If Katy Perry got her claws into it, it would have been number one last year. But, why bother? Crista Ru's (aka Powers) vocals combined with this wickedly addicting production make for perfect late summer fun. When she sings “Come to me baby, don't be shy, don't be shy” the only response you'll have is “I'll be there in a hot second” LOL. Look for a new album by the Knocks later this fall. Party Favorz is currently in release mode, so I'm gonna go ahead and start dropping the rest of the releases each day so I can back up and clear my hard drive and start working on some new projects for you folks. I'll be back tomorrow with something new for ya. Until then …ENJOY! Album : Autumn Mixtape 2 Genre : House, Deep House, NuDisco, Indie Year : 2014 Total Time : 01:38:55 1. Synapson feat.
