The implementation of the Transfer Portal, as well as the growth of NIL has transformed college football in a big way, nowhere more than in recruiting. One of many keys to victory that Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has talked about over the years is winning the "middle eight," which entails outscoring opponents over the final four minutes of the second quarter and the first four minutes of the third quarter. Those two possessions can swing a game in either direction, which is why it is a focus for the Buckeyes and every other program in college football. So how effective was that focus this past year for Ohio State? In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, hosts Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr look at the numbers to see how well Ryan Day's middle eight plan of attack worked.

The Ohio State Buckeyes lost 35 players to the Transfer Portal following the 2025 college football season. That was nearly twice as many as had left Ryan Day's program following either of the two previous seasons. But Day thinks that huge list of departures may be the exception, rather than the rule moving forward. Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss why that might be the case, how potential changes to the college football calendar could impact that moving forward, and whether the growth of the Transfer Portal in roster building could make high school recruiting a lot less important in the future.

FOX Sports' lead College Football analyst Joel Klatt breaks down the Big Ten's schedule release and gives out his winners and losers of the conference's “schedule lottery.” He explains which under-the-radar teams' schedule could propel them to a big season and which schedules will force teams to fight to stay above water. He then ranks his top 5 games for the upcoming season as teams like Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Indiana, Penn State and USC all set for key matchups in the conference. Klatt gives his analysis of Ohio State's hiring of Arthur Smith as the new OC and what it means for Ryan Day and the Buckeye offense as well as USC's hiring of former TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson to lead the Trojan defense this upcoming season.
