Two weeks into the 2021 season, Ohio State football was a complete mess. The Buckeyes had just lost to Oregon, a two-touchdown underdog, and were in danger of being knocked out of the College Football Playoff picture before their season ever really got started. But in the wake of that loss, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day made a radical change, overhauling his defensive coaching staff, removing the playcalling responsibilities from Kerry Coombs, and giving them to Matt Barnes instead. That move was just one of several things that changed, and the results were apparent quickly. But that move was a difficult one for Coombs to swallow. This week, he opened up about that decision, why he chose to stay on staff, what he really thinks about it, and more. You'll hear directly from Coombs about all of that, plus what he thinks the real difference is on the defense, why Denzel Burke has made an immediate impact, how Steele Chambers has changed the story at linebacker for the Buckeyes, and much more.

The Ohio State Buckeyes scored early against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and never looked back as they raced out to a 45-6 halftime lead before slowing things down after halftime to secure a 53-13 victory. Despite this being this fourth start of the season, Saturday afternoon was official C.J. Stroud's coming out party, and friends, did he make the most of it. The second-year freshman was 17-for-23 for 330 yards and 5 touchdowns and after a week off to rest an ailing shoulder, he shut the door on any and all legitimate conversations about who should be Ohio State's starting quarterback. On the LGHL Instant Recap Podcast, Chris Renne and Matt Tamanini discuss Stroud's near-perfect performance, the impressive — but short — outing by TreVeyon Henderson, the big game from Chris Olave, and more on the offensive side of the ball. But, the biggest impression was made by the guys on the defense. While Rutgers is not a premiere Big Ten offense, the Buckeyes' performance on Saturday afternoon proved that the changes that Ryan Day, Kerry Coombs, and Matt Barnes have been making are beginning to work. Day said C.J. Stroud is definitely the starter when healthy, but not everyone agrees that should be the case. It's a fascinating divide in the view of Ohio State's QB world. Then it's time to go position by position through Ohio State's back seven to discern where things are actually better compared to the Oregon loss. The Ohio State Buckeyes made some big changes before the Tulsa game in an effort to fix their struggling defense. Kerry Coombs was replaced by Matt Barnes as the primary playcaller, and Coombs got moved upstairs to the press box. Some new players got an extended run, including promising young standouts like Cameron Martinez, Tyleik Williams, JT Tuimoloau, and Jack Sawyer. And while the run defense was light years better, there were still some troubling warning signs with pass defense, the utter lack of pass rush from most of the defensive line, and a linebacker unit that still seems like it has more questions than answers. So are more big changes needed? Buckeye Scoop's Bill Greene joins host Tom Orr to discuss that and much more.
