Notre Dame football will no longer be able to remain a college football Independent once a settlement is reached in the House vs NCAA antitrust lawsuit. The fruit of this suit will start the unprecedented era of revenue sharing among major athletic departments and its student athletes. REVENUE SHARINGWhile Notre Dame receives substantial revenue from NBC for its football broadcast rights and media rights money from the ACC for its non-football sports, there will not be enough money for them to survive once each major school is forced to shell out 30 million dollars a year for the next 10 years as part of a revenue share settlement.MORE MONEY ELSEWHEREJoining a major conference like the Big Ten with much higher TV revenues will be Notre Dame's only business model for survival. Surely we will get hate mail from the Golden Domers who insist Notre Dame will be an Independent until the end of time. But the times in college football are changing too fast. Adapt or die.PORTAL NEWSWe also bounce around transfer portal news by checking in at Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State and Northwestern. The Big Ten and the SEC are separating themselves from the NCAA as the association is being sued for billions of dollars for suppressing athletes' revenues. The power conferences are quickly designing a revenue sharing plan in order to appease the plaintiffs in the House vs NCAA lawsuit scheduled to hit the courtroom in January of 2025. Frankly, this is something the NCAA should have gotten ahead of years ago.END OF NCAA?Some estimates show the NCAA could lose over 4 billion dollars in this antitrust case. A college football Super Conference idea is gaining momentum but it is nothing like anything you have imagined before. The idea would also blow up the Big Ten as we know it.One thing is for certain; with Name Image and Likeness and Transfer Portal traffic and billions and billions of TV dollars floating around, there are many "experts" that are certain college football cannot maintain its current hectic pace and survive as is.SUPER CONFERENCEAt Locked on Big 10 we do think more change is coming to college football and our Conference. But we have always predicted a reasonable path to some sort of Super Conference or Super Conferences alignment. To some extent it is inevitable. But some of these ideas from others are crazy. And the people that cannot make up their minds on how to execute a 12 team playoff format vs a 14 team playoff format are the ones planning the future of college football. Yikes! Maybe we need to volunteer our services to be the Commissioner or Czar of college football. Also, since college basketball is over we need to turn our attention to college football, specifically, spring football games begin this weekend and we need to keep our eyes on some developing storylines.CAITLIN MONEYWith the WNBA Draft coming next week, we were wondering if Iowa basketball player Caitlin Clark has looked into Ice Cube's 5 million dollar offer to play in his 3 on 3 basketball league. And finally, US News and World Report has ranked the best academic schools in the country. It was their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament National Championship game since 1969.For Connecticut, it was the school's 6th national title as they became the first school since Florida in 2006 and 2007 to win back to back national championships in men's college basketball.WOMEN'S RATINGS!!We will find out in a few hours, but we are betting for the first time ever, the women's college basketball championship may have earned higher ratings than the men's college basketball championship. Sunday, during South Carolina's win over Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes, an average of 18.7 million people tuned in. At its peak 24 million people watched. Wow!A day after we learned John Calipari is leaving Kentucky basketball we also learned that he reportedly talked to the Ohio State Buckeyes about their coaching job vacancy. It seemed Ohio State basketball was not ready to eat Calipari's 33 million dollar buyout.SPRING FOOTBALL!!Now that college basketball is over it is time to talk college football. (It's always time to talk college football on Locked on Big 10!). But spring football games begin this weekend. Which Big 10 school brought in the most athletes in from the transfer portal? Are the Michigan Wolverines done with the idea that only a Michigan Man can coach at Michigan? True Michigan Men Jim Harbaugh and Juwan Howard are gone and their replacements, Sherrone Moore and Dusty May, are not true Michigan Men. We would love your thoughts on that topic especially if you are from Ann Arbor or wear the Maize and Blue.Did James Franklin have to "punish" new defensive coordinator and former Indiana football coach Tom Allen at practice? We will tell you what that was about. It is good natured fun. #WeAre!CAITLIN HUGE $$$Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark has been offered 5 million dollars to play ball but not for the WNBA where she might average between $100,000 and $250,000 dollars a year. Will she take the money and run?Speaking of Iowa, football coach Kirk Ferentz updates us on the health of injured quarterback Cade McNamara and his involvement in spring football. It looks like it will be another slow start for the QB who was injured last offseason as well. But Ferentz does not want any set backs.SWEETAnd the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 is underway tonight for the men and the women resume action tomorrow. Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team march forward to return to the women's NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. Clark scored 32 points in a tough battle vs West Virginia Monday night. Also, Big 10 rival Indiana defeated Oklahoma and will join Iowa in the sweet 16, March Madness fun.Up next the Hawkeyes face Colorado on Saturday while the Hoosiers play undefeated South Carolina Friday in Albany, New York.PENN STATE RECEIVERSSpring football is in full swing and James Franklin and the Penn State football team is laser-focused on their wide receivers. We are not sure they upgraded enough at the position with all due respect to Ohio State Buckeyes transfer Julian Fleming. But #WeAre excited to see the Nittany Lions offense under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. There will be a lot of pre-snap motion. A lot! And we will see if quarterback Drew Allar will cut things loose a bit. We think he was over-coached about not throwing interceptions last season and he played too conservatively at times. (But it should be noted he only threw 2 interceptions in 2023).Also, tune in to find out what Minnesota Gophers football coach PJ Fleck said about the new Big 10 commercial coming on the Big 10 Network! While March Madness and the NCAA Tournament begins for men's and women's basketball, Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule finds himself in the middle of a storm in Lincoln. Athletic Director Trev Alberts is leaving Nebraska to take the same job at Texas A&M. Ironically, both the Nebraska men's basketball and women's basketball teams drew Texas A&M in their respective brackets Sunday. That was strange, huh? STORM AT NEBRASKASo, in the middle of what was supposed to be Matt Rhule's introductory press conference to kick off spring football, he spent his first ten minutes talking about Alberts' departure and the strength of the athletic department. It was not ideal, but Matt Rhule was a calming influence amid the chaos.YOU WANT TO DO THAT?Regarding basketball, a possible future opponent of Caitlin Clark left some bulletin board material for the Iowa Hawkeyes. That was dumb. And we will let you know who did it!And we discuss whether teams should bail on an opportunity to play in the N.I.T. 6 big name schools, including the Indiana Hoosiers declined to play. Why? Just as the Big 10 expands to 18 teams, more schools could be coming with additional conference expansion as early February 2025. That's in 11 months! How could this happen? There is something that could expedite the implosion of the ACC and those teams will be frantically looking to jump to the Big 10 or the SEC. Tune in to Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon and find out what that event could be! Here's a hint; it has to do with ESPN.BIG TEN TOURNAMENTAlso, the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament gets underway today and culminates with a championship on Sunday, followed by Selection Sunday. Would the Big 10 ever cast aside its underperforming football schools? Everything regarding college sports has been about expansion. Could the Big 10 kick out schools like Indiana, Purdue, or Rutgers? Would the SEC kick out a school like Vanderbilt? The lower performing schools are not in a position to win championships and they don't bring in as much revenue or garner big TV ratings like some of their more popular counterparts. Yet, they still collect $75-100 million dollars a year from their respective conference media deals. It's something to ponder in the future but we will look at it today.CAITLIN CLARKCaitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes are like rock stars everywhere they go and they are battle tested and ready for just about anything they face in the NCAA Tournament. Quarterback Dylan Raiola and Nebraska Football coach Matt Rhule are quietly working together to lift the Huskers toward the top of the Big 10 in 2024. Rhule isn't ready to name his 5-star freshman the starter just yet, though. He wants him to get his feet wet and learn how to be a college student first. But Raiola is working behind the scenes doing everything he can to help this Nebraska football team as much as he can. We will get our first look at Raiola in the Huskers Spring Game on April 27.WOODSON STAYINGReports out of Bloomington, Indiana are that Hoosiers basketball coach Mike Woodson will be back next season. After making the NCAA tournament in each of his first two seasons as head coach, the 2023-24 season has been a disappointing one in Bloomington. We will share our opinion on that decision. We have more data that says Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark may have to take a pay cut to play in the WNBA. But in reality, she has so many endorsements she will be fine financially.COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHANGESCollege football is going to move its early signing period to early December so it does not conflict with the December Transfer Portal period. That's a step in the right direction but important college football people now want to create a third signing period that would take place in the summer. We think that would be a dumb idea and we tell you why. Finally, we look at the upcoming weekend broadcast schedule on the Big 10 Network which includes most of the women's basketball tournament. Big 10 Commissioner Tony Petitti controls the additional expansion for the College Football Playoff. Just as we settled on expanding to 12 teams a couple weeks ago, we are now headed toward expanding the college football playoff to 14 teams. One would wonder, if this is inevitable, why not jump to 16? A lot of this fails to make sense and it absolutely continues to water down the importance of regular season Saturday afternoons! Be assured that whatever is decided, the Big 10 will be in control of the rules and the money, along with the SEC. CAILTIN CLARK TO WNBAMeanwhile, despite having another year of eligibility due to the Covid-year, Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark announced she will turn pro and enter the WNBA draft. She is projected to go number 1 to the Indiana Fever. We wish her well and hope her popularity follows her there! Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo is tired of answering questions about 6-11 freshman Xavier Booker. Izzo has been bringing him along slowly despite Spartans fan's desire to see him get more minutes. In football, with the NFL Draft less than two months away, Penn State's Chop Robinson is gaining attention as one NFL insider calls him a freakish athlete. The Wisconsin football team is getting ready for spring football as Luke Fickell starts his second season in charge of the Badgers. Fickell wants an air-raid offense but he's got to get better play at quarterback. Tanner Mordecai was not the answer. The plan for 2024 is to use Miami Hurricanes transfer Tyler Van Dyke to lead the Wisconsin football offense. Van Dyke is talented but erratic. Another talented quarterback already on the roster may get a shot at the starting job and that is Braedyn Locke. He's young but he is talented enough to make a run at the starting gig and that is why this spring is extremely important for everyone involved. And since Wisconsin basketball is struggling we thought we'd talk about Wisconsin football today.Find out which former Ohio State Buckeyes player is working for former Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh with the Los Angeles Chargers and what he thinks about it. (Here's a hint: He's pretty excited about it and the feeling seems mutual!).The Nebraska athletic director has some words about court-storming. It has happened three times at Nebraska in the past few weeks, involving both the women's and men's teams. And Juwan Howard is about to set a dubious record with the Michigan basketball program. We have all of this and a look ahead to this weekend's programming on the Big 10 Network, here on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon. Kirk Ferentz and Iowa football over-achieved their way to 10 wins and an appearance in the Big 10 championship game last season. Despite a true lack of offense and injury after injury the Hawkeyes continued to win games. Give a lot of credit to Kirk Ferentz. As far as coaches go, he's a pro's pro. Sadly for him, he had to fire his son Brian Ferentz as the team's offensive coordinator. Tim Lester will call the offense in 2024 but he will enter spring football without quarterback Cade McNamara who is still recovering from a knee injury. A lot of questions remain for Iowa football and whether they can match their amazing 2023 season.CRAZY NIGHT!Find out why Assembly Hall had to be evacuated in the middle of the Wisconsin - Indiana basketball game Tuesday night. Wisconsin had just stormed back from 13 down to tie the game in the second half when the real excitement began! And Purdue Boilermaker big man Zach Edey set another record with another Big 10 player of the week award. We also discuss whether Caitlin Clark will return for another season at Iowa instead of departing for the WNBA. She might make more money if she stays.RANKINGSFinally, we close things out with our weekly Big 10 Men's Basketball Power Rankings on Craig Shemon's Locked on Big 10!Connect on Twitter: https://twitter.com/talkbig10Website & Merch: https://talkbig10.com Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…
Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have so many aspirations in 2024 it's hard to keep up. Oregon Football expects to win the Big 10 in its first season. Oregon football also expects to win a national championship as well. Oregon has a loaded football team but they will have a new quarterback. In fact, they will have two new quarterbacks with Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel and UCLA's Dante Moore. Whoever wins the starting job will have big shoes to fill. Bo Nix threw 45 touchdown passes and completes 77 percent of his passes. But if Gabriel earns the job and Oregon football rises to the top of the Big 10 and the college football world, might he also lock down a Heisman Trophy? We will discuss that here. While we are talking about transfer quarterbacks, the Big 10 has a couple with two different stories. Matt Rhule and the Nebraska Cornhuskers hold their annual Red-White Spring football game soon. And there will be a lot of pressure on incoming true-freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola who flipped from the Georgia Bulldogs at the last minute to join Nebraska football. Nebraska football is dying to get to a bowl game, something they haven't done since 2016. Rhule had a decent Huskers team in his first season in 2023. But they never could get right at the quarterback position. That's what makes the new 5-star quarterback Raiola so intriguing. Does Rhule let him learn under fire as the starter or does he ease the soon-to be 19 year old into the lineup? We will discuss that here and take your comments.Plus, UCLA football got themselves an NFL offensive coordinator in Eric Bieniemy. He used to be the running backs coach at UCLA so it's a bit of a homecoming. But it is still a shame Bieniemy is not a head coach in the NFL.If you live in Ohio (Buckeyes fans) you will not be able to make player prop bets on college players. Something about the Ohio Casino Control Commission. We will explain. And what is going on with Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans? USC Trojans quarterback Miller Moss debuted with a 6 touchdown performance filling in for Caleb Williams in the Holiday Bowl. It was his first career start. Can he continue with such dominating performances? Spring football for Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans is right around the corner so we may learn a bit more sooner than later. So, who is Miller Moss? He didn't have extraordinary stats in high school and he hasn't played that much in two years at USC. We don't have a lot of intel on his abilities but we will try to figure him out on Locked on Big 10. Some quarterbacks that were rumored to be transferring into USC, saw Moss's 6 touchdown performance and decided to go elsewhere so it appears to be his job for the taking. He better be ready. The USC Trojans open with LSU and have dates with the Michigan Wolverines and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In other football news, now that Alabama's Nick Saban is gone and Jim Harbaugh isn't negotiating a new deal with Michigan football, we look at the highest paid coaches in college football and in the Big 10. We also check in on the over-achieving Northwestern Wildcats football team. It turns out they don't have a place to play several home games due to the renovations at Ryan Field. What's the plan? Michigan State football has a long way to go. Jonathan Smith has a big job to do and try to turn things around. While previewing the upcoming spring we will look back at how former Spartans coach Nick Saban indirectly led to today's problems with the Michigan State program. This is more of an amusing look at history and not a criticism. And, by the way, the first half of the Spartans 2024 football schedule is rough. If they are planning on discovering who they are, they better do it quickly or else we may see a slow start in East Lansing. Penn State basketball continues to amaze all with their ability to come from behind and win. Four of their seven conference wins came after falling behind by double figures. Last night they trailed the ranked Illinois Fighting Illini by 14 points and found a way to win. Impressive! How will Iowa basketball superstar Caitlin Clark do in the WNBA? The Michigan Wolverines will look to win their fourth straight Big 10 Championship in 2024. However, as spring football approaches the Michigan football team will look a lot different from 2023. That difference starts with the head coach Sherrone Moore taking over for Jim Harbaugh and his first job is to name departed quarterback JJ McCarthy's replacement. Oh, and about twenty players from the 2023 team will be drafted by the NFL in two months. There should be an ample supply of players ready to step up. Other than that, it's business as usual in Ann Arbor. There is still a lot of talent on this team. Even if they take a step backward in 2024 they may still be good enough to contend for a Big 10 title. Remaining in the state of Michigan, we check in on the 2023 Spartans football coaching staff and report where they all landed following Mel Tucker's departure. It is pretty interesting. We finish by posting our weekly Big 10 men's basketball Power Rankings. The Illinois Fighting Illini are trying to catch the Purdue Boilermakers. Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans are RED HOT! Ohio State football coach Ryan Day must name a quarterback early in his Title-or-Bust 2024 season. The Buckeyes get an early start to spring ball and hold their annual Scarlet and Gray game at noon on April 13th. Unlike last season, five quarterbacks will compete for the starting job. One is a 5th year transfer, two have been fighting to gain footing on the Buckeyes depth chart for a season and two are 5-star recruits ready to show Columbus what they can do. Plus Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard insists he wants to stay in Ann Arbor despite another disappointing year. We will tell you why Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans win in Ann Arbor this weekend was a good sign for their Final Four prospects. We share the numbers. But, basically when the Spartans win at Michigan they usually go to the Final Four. When they lose, they don't. And basketball great Sheryl Swoops has apologized to Iowa sensation Caitlin Clark. Penn State Football started winter workouts last week and Spring Football is around the corner. James Franklin and his team must revamp their offense if they want to take the next step forward and become an elite program. They are close! Only the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes have been in their way. Good News: There is no Michigan football on their schedule this year as the Big 10 will no longer have divisions. Ohio State is still on the slate and so is Big 10 newcomer USC. The Nittany Lions must add vertical explosiveness to their offensive attack. That was truly their lone weakness last season.
