There's a quote in psychology I keep coming back to: the core of optimism is resilience. I've thought about that quote for years, and this week, sitting across from Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, I had a hunch that that very quote would resonate with him. So I did the only thing I do in these Y-Option podcasts: ask questions I don't know the answer to.I've known Coach Schiano for over 20 years. First as a wideout at Pitt, then these last couple years covering Big Ten football. This conversation, though, was different because I was embedded within the Scarlet Knights program for the day and what a day it was.I got to sit in on his team meeting, watch Coach Schiano look his players in the eyes and bridge a football lesson to a life lesson in the same breath. And at the end of an epic day with the team, staff and program he and I sat down, and Coach Schiano took me all the way back to where his leadership began: his kitchen table. And that is where today's Y-Option podcast, fueled by our founding sponsor 76, keeping you on the GO GO GO, begins.Coach Schiano grew up in an Italian household in Paterson, New Jersey, where his parents taught him and his three siblings one thing above all: you get up, you go to work, and some days it isn't pleasant but you keep showing up. The standard, even before it was ever spoken, was simple — no matter what, protect your family. That's not a throwaway line for him. It's the whole building now. “Family is everything to me in this building,” he said. And he means it literally, as he's now recruiting the sons of players he coached at Rutgers when they were in the Big East while currently coaching with his own three sons on this year's staff. Full circle doesn't begin to cover it.This is the line that stuck with me most: “You can have a goal and at the same time have a purpose.” Greg's goal is a national championship at Rutgers. His purpose is different. He is driven to make sure that the young men who walk into the Rutgers program leave as grown men. Husbands. Fathers. People who can figure it out when nobody's telling them what to do next. In this era of players getting paid, transferring and being told things from others that may not be accurate I have to say that watching Coach Schiano teach his players the realities of LIFE and how football can teach all of us how to navigate life was one of the most refreshing parts of my off-season.He didn't plan on coaching, by the way. He got cut playing in the CFL, came home, signed up for the LSAT, and was on his way to law school when his high school coach — practically a second father to him — talked him into helping out on the sideline instead. That coach later “fired” him, on purpose, so Greg would go be a graduate assistant and learn the business the right way. That GA year? 1989. At Rutgers. Where he told me, without blinking, that even back then, he was building his coaching staff for this program in his head.Chop.If you've followed this program at all, you know the word. Here's where it actually comes from: 1999, Miami, a sports psychologist named Dr. Kevin Elko telling the staff a story about a guy in the woods with nothing but an axe. It sat dormant for six years. Then in 2005, Rutgers blew a 28-7 fourth quarter lead at Illinois and lost in overtime. Greg couldn't sleep on the flight home. He remembered the story, upon landing he sent a GA to Home Depot for an axe, had it painted red, and walked it into the team meeting still wet with paint. We're all in the woods. We can lay down, or we pick a tree and chop until it falls. Rutgers went on a run and made a bowl game. The axe, and the word, never left. Finally, Rutgers has both hands free. For most of his 18 years split across two stints as head coach, Coach Schiano described competing “with one arm tied behind his back.” That's changing. He talked about vertical alignment: from president to athletic director to head coach, all pointed at the same goal, for the first time in his tenure. It's showing up in real terms: Rutgers retained all three of their must-keep players this offseason, including a receiver who very nearly left before Greg reminded him who he was and where he was from. “You're a difference maker. You're gonna leave a legacy,” he told him. He stayed. That conversation with KJ Duff is coming up later this week so be sure to subscribe to our YouTube page.We also talked about his three coaching trees and biggest influences: Joe Paterno at Penn State, Dave Wannstedt and Butch Davis out of the Jimmy Johnson lineage at Miami and Chicago, Dick Anderson at Rutgers. We talked about Pete Carroll and impact of our book, Win Forever, and the sabbatical Greg took in 2014 that reshaped how he leads now. Demanding, but flexible enough to let a coach leave for four hours for his daughter's recital. And we talked about his three sons, all working in the building, all grinding it out the long way.He just turned 60. Says he feels 30. And when I asked him about the word “legacy” landing on him after everything he's built here, he wouldn't take it yet. “I'm only comfortable with it because we haven't started yet,” he said. “The best times for Rutgers football are ahead of us.”I believe it.Much love and stay steady,YogiY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Jersey Guy Sports - Sports talk for true Yankees, Giants, Rangers, and Rutgers fans with some general sports talk thrown in

It's here!  The mid-2026 Jersey Guy Sports Raves and Rants podcast!  Here I talk about the things or people I am happy about, as well as those not so much.A New York sports fan can hold two truths at once: you can be genuinely grateful for what your teams give you, and still be furious about what they take away. That's the energy I bring on Jersey Guy Sports with our mid-2026 raves and rants, bouncing from pure joy to total disbelief across the Knicks, Yankees, Giants, Rangers, and Rutgers. I start with the high that still doesn't feel real: the New York Knicks winning a championship. We talk about what it means to end a long title drought, the playoff comebacks that turned into instant city folklore, and why that 2026 run felt like a forever moment. Then I pivot to the people who define New York expectations, including Aaron Judge's massive value to the Yankees even when the postseason scars linger, and why Jalen Brunson's late-game shot-making makes him the exact player you want when everything tightens up. From there, I hit Rutgers football and the tough balance between culture and wins under Greg Schiano, plus the one thing we can brag about without hesitation: the Rutgers game day atmosphere in Piscataway, from tailgates to boardwalk vibes to night-game visuals. I also show love to Igor Shesterkin as a Rangers backbone, and to Cody Bellinger for doing the unglamorous work that keeps the Yankees from leaking runs and opportunities. Then it's rant time: what I think is holding teams back, why replay review is draining the life out of sports, and the decisions and performances that drive fans up a wall. If you've got your own list, you're going to have opinions. Subscribe to Jersey Guy Sports, share this with a fellow fan, and leave a review. David Anderson and I discuss the state of Rutgers football following Spring Camp. On offense there is continuity in the system under OC Kirk Ciarocca, a changing of the guard at QB, two elite playmakers return, but plenty of questions on the offensive line. On defense, a completely new coaching staff but one that has been successful together before along with all new personnel as well. Can the program take a step forward this season and if they don't, what would that mean for Greg Schiano. There are more questions than answers at this stage of the offseason. With a lull between Ohio State games, we look at all the various trophies and awards Buckeye players piled up with their performances throughout the 2025 season. We dive into the various All-Big Ten teams as well. Who was deserving? Who got snubbed? How the hell did Julian Sayin end up fourth on the Heisman list with numbers comparable to or better than the winner (even in the head-to-head meeting)? And furthermore, how did a receiver win the Biletnikoff Award without even winning the award for being the best receiver in his conference? That's another snub for Jeremiah Smith (and an egregious one — I didn't see Makai Lemon's name in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting). Following our walk through the postseason awards, we turned our attention to the coaching carousel. Former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles only worked at Penn State for one season and is now headed to Tennessee. It's a bit ironic that his last outing before being hired by Tennessee was to give up 500+ yards to Greg Schiano's Rutgers Scarlet Knights. After all, Schiano was supposed to become the Vols' head coach until the fanbase pushed back hard against the choice.Mike Jacobs, who played for Ohio State on the offensive line in the late 1990s and early 2000s is the new head coach at Toledo. I can honestly say I don't remember him as a Buckeye, but now he's back in the Buckeye State and has a solid job in the MAC.Finally, we discussed the bizarre case of Sherrone Moore and the ongoing issues at Michigan. While Moore's wife and kids never asked to be put in this position, here they are. It may not be fair to them, but it will probably be some time before this matter is put to rest. The University of Michigan is investigating its athletic department's response to previous school scandals, and there doesn't seem to be a way for Warde Manuel to keep his job (nor should there be). We discuss the matter without getting into the salacious details or diving into reports and speculation, and perhaps the best plan forward for Ohio State's rival is to cut all ties with the Jim Harbaugh era and start fresh. We're taking next week off, but we'll be back on Dec. 30 to preview Ohio State's next opponent in the College Football Playoff. We'll be watching the Miami-Texas A&M game with great interest. We would love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or send us an email at silverbulletspod@gmail.com. Maybe some of the mojo rubbed off on the special teams, though, because the Buckeyes recorded a blocked punt and a kickoff return for a touchdown on the evening. We looked back at our score predictions, broke down all the key players/moments/stats from the game, and checked on our picks to click to see how they performed. (Spoiler: they did well.)  After yapping about the Buckeyes for a bit, we turned our attention to the rest of the Big Ten. There were some top-notch games over the weekend, including Iowa at USC and Michigan needing a last-second field goal to avoid a loss to Northwestern at Wrigley Field. Penn State got its first Big Ten win, while Michigan State and Purdue did not. We looked ahead to this weekend's slate of games in the conference, and USC-Oregon is a critical game for the Trojans' hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff. Northwestern will be playing for bowl eligibility.  Finally, we looked forward to Saturday at noon, when the Rutgers Scarlet Knights visit Columbus. Greg Schiano's defense has not been up to its usual standard this year, and we expect the OSU offense to continue to put points on the board. Hopefully, the Buckeyes will be able to rest some key starters for most or all of the game, but it's important to maintain momentum heading into The Game.  We look at Rutgers offensive weapons and defensive rankings, make our picks to click, and try our best to predict Saturday's final score. We would love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or send us an email at silverbulletspod@gmail.com Any questions directed toward us will be answered on our next show.Be sure to subscribe, rate, review, share, and follow the show over on Twitter at @SilvrBulletsPod.As always, thanks for listening! 0:20 - UCLA with Nico Iamaleava might have been interesting at times, but with a backup quarterback, it was almost over before it started.  21:31 - A look around the rest of the B1G. Penn State finally won a league game. 42:25 - The Buckeyes host their last game of the regular season when Rutgers comes to town

The Scarlet Knights continue to make the same mistakes and allow big play after big play. The defensive coaching staff has failed miserably and it's on Schiano to fix it. The offense has regressed as well. With a chance to get momentum back against Maryland this week, if Rutgers can't it's fair to wonder if Schiano will be able to bounce back this season and beyond.#rutgersfootball

There are certain Saturdays that feel like they were built for college football: the lights, the noise, the choreography of a crowd that feels like it's part of the playbook. This week's conversation at Y-Option, presented by 76–keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat, welcomes back Todd Blackledge. On Saturday night, Todd will have the best seat in the house as he broadcasts the Oregon v Penn State game in Happy Valley during the Nittany Lions annual White Out.We dive into what it is like to broadcast a White Out, the match-ups he is looking forward to seeing play out and analyze both Drew Allar and Dante Moore.Todd shared the origin of his own career and how there is a unique connection between the start of his illustrious career and the famed White Out. He also shared how he prepares for a game like this, as he has known for months that NBC and his crew would be on the call.He also shared his truth on what Drew Allar needs to do in this environment and what this top 6 match-up will come down to.I've known Todd since he was calling Big East games back when I was playing and he's been a constant source of inspiration and support since we met in the early 2000s. Be sure to tune into the White Out this Saturday night as this rematch of the Big Ten Championship game from last season may be a classic. And to both fan bases, win or lose, your season is neither complete or ruined. Yes, it's a massive data point but it's only week 5, and we have a lot of ball left to play.I'm off to Minnesota to call one of the most intriguing games of the weekend as Rutgers and Greg Schiano visit P.J. Fleck, who once worked on Schiano's staff. I have a feeling we will kick off your Saturday with a four quarter game that will come down to a few plays, a few decisions.Enjoy Week 5 and as always, much love and stay steady,YogiY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication.
