Brett Ewing, chief market strategist at First Franklin Financial Services, says that the rally he expected for small-cap stocks when he last appeared on the show in January, finally arrived in the third quarter and the stock market is now rotating towards smaller companies, industrials and real estate investment trusts. Ewing says that he expects the stock market to have a "decent correction" near the end of the year, if only because the market has seldom been up this much after three quarters and most years with a similar gain have seen a downturn in the fourth quarter; while he thinks the market will quickly backstop a decline, he noted that investors may also want to lean into fixed income because bonds, historically, have outperformed equities in the first 12 months after the federal reserve starts a rate-cutting cycle. Nadia Vanderhall, Financial Planner and CEO at Brands + Bands Strategy Group, discusses her recent blog post on how consumers can use gift cards as a budgeting and money-management tool — and can be a valuable accessory for teaching kids about money — and Gil Baumgarten, founder and president of Segment Wealth Management talks ETFs and stocks in the Money Life Market Call.
Gil Baumgarten is a disruptive wealth management pioneer. After battling UBS in defense of 100% ETF portfolios, a direct assault on the firm's fee-rich mutual fund business, he was on the original beta-test team of six advisors permitted to run discretionary ETF portfolios in 2002. He has since been named one of the “Top-20 ETF Thought Leaders in the U.S.” by Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. Gil is perennially named a top 50 advisor in Texas by Barron's, out of the state's 26,002 registrants. Gil is also the best-selling author of FOOLISH: How Investors Get Worked Up and Worked Over by the System. The book takes readers through the dark tunnels of the brokerage fee ecosystem and takes a deep dive on investors' self-harm tendencies driven by ego satisfaction. In the past year, the stock market has made headlines with its unexpected ebbs and flows, signaling to people who otherwise had their money elsewhere to try their hand at investing, while setting off alarms of panic in others. With the feeling of so much riding on each decision you make with your money, ‘weathering the storm' that is the stock market certainly tests the resilience of the investor and their funds. Natural responses of fight or flight, risk versus reward and confirmation biases all play a part in how far an investment can go, as well as just simply knowing the rules around fees and taxes on investments. This ‘behavioral finance' is what Gil Baumgarten explores in his new book, Foolish: How Investors Get Worked Up and Worked Over by the System.Beginning his career at the venerable EF Hutton in the early 1980s, Gil became a top portfolio manager for UBS and Citigroup Smith Barney, becoming one of only a handful of professional money managers with a 15-year all-ETF portfolio track record. After decades of working with brokerage firms and feeling more like a number with dollar signs and less like a true advocate for his clients, he transitioned to working independently, starting his firm Segment Wealth Management in 2010 as a Fiduciary Financial Advisor.Helpful links:Join the Strategic Financial Mastery programJoin Our Free CommunityTrain your team with an on-site workshopDisclaimer:BYFIQ, LLC is a wholly owned entity of Coltivar Group, LLC. It seems like every other week there's a new investment craze and before you can wrap your head around it everyone on social media is already on to the next one. In this week's episode, I'm joined by a veteran of the investment industry to help navigate through all the investing noise. Gil Baumgarten is the Founder, President, and CEO of Segment Wealth Management and the author of FOOLISH: How Investors Get Worked Up and Worked Over by the System. Gil Baumgarten has been a part of the investment industry for over 37 years and has been the multi-year recipient of the Top 1,200 Financial Advisors in America distinction by Barron's. He started his career on Wall Street in the 1980s but found it routinely emphasized its own interests over the clients. In 2010, Gil left the brokerage world to start Segment Wealth Management, a fiduciary firm where the interests of the client and the firm could align. He launched his first book, FOOLISH: How Investors Get Worked Up and Worked Over by the System last spring. In this episode Gil pulls back the curtain on Wall Street and why he ultimately decided to leave and do things on his own terms. Gil shares why a lack of understanding about short-term investing is what leads to major losses and ending up in high tax brackets. I also ask Gil what's the difference he's seen from working with high-net-worth individuals and what we can learn from their investment strategies. After decades of working with brokerage firms and feeling more like a number with dollar signs and less like a true advocate for his clients, he transitioned to working independently, starting his firm Segment Wealth Management in 2010 as a Fiduciary Financial Advisor.
