When we have digital platforms, like anybody can get onto Spotify or Pandora or Apple Music or whatever, and they can find any piece of music literally created. Just like, you know, 99.9% of all recorded music exists on these platforms. And so you can find anybody's music. And so anywhere in the world, you can listen to the oboist—that one oboist who is the greatest in the world. So the globalization of the audience changes the nature of what happens in the marketplace, so to speak, and in a radical way. And we will register to vote, because as citizens of these United States we have the right to do it."Vivian conceived and directed an educational program, Vision, and put 702 Alabama students in college with scholarships (this program later became Upward Bound). If there is one thing that academics know how to do, it's publish new research. It seems that umpteen studies are published every hour. It can be overwhelming to keep up with it all.  So, we undertook it to help you with this week's episode.  We explore three fascinating studies in the realm of consumer behavior with insights from Dr. Morgan Ward, a Professor of Consumer Behavior at Emory University. From the influence of sound on social status to the role of streaks in motivating behavior and even how firms should use AI to deliver news to customers, this episode provides a wealth of information for businesses looking to understand and serve their customers better than they do today. Social Status and Product Sound Dr. Ward's research delves into how consumers choose products based on the sounds they emit, linking these choices to social status. The study finds that people often seek status through two main channels—dominance and prestige. Some customers buy noisy products, like a Harley Davidson, to assert dominance, while others opt for quiet, high-end products, such as Dyson fans, to signify prestige. Ward emphasizes that understanding the status-seeking motivations of your target audience can help businesses design products that appeal to specific social power desires.  Key Takeaway: Customizing product sounds can signal social power, appealing to customers' status-seeking behavior. The Gamification of Behavior Through Streaks Ward also discusses the role of streaks in consumer behavior, particularly how brands use streak-based incentives to encourage continued engagement. Apps like Duolingo, Snapchat, and Headspace all capitalize on the idea of maintaining streaks to motivate daily usage. However, there are tradeoffs. Extrinsic motivators like streaks can sometimes overshadow intrinsic motivators, leading to a decrease in overall enjoyment and, ultimately, participation. Ward warns businesses to consider when streaks are appropriate carefully and to balance the motivations that drive consumer behavior. Key Takeaway: Streak-based gamification can motivate, but businesses should carefully balance extrinsic and intrinsic motivations. AI vs. Human Interaction: Finally, Ward shares research on when companies should use AI versus humans for customer interactions, particularly around delivering good or bad news. Can a Muslim university be an Indian university? These are the first words in Dr Laurence Gautier's book Between Nation and ‘Community' - Muslim Universities & Indian Politics after Partition, in which she explores the history, nature and contribution of India's leading Muslim universities - Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), two institutions which in her words acted, “as crucibles for competing conceptions of ‘Indian Muslimness' in post-independence India.” This MBM conversation is with researcher and author, Laurence Gautier where we discuss how these universities, their members and students played key roles in recognising the needs of a new India in terms of education, nation-building and social reform. We dive deeper into debates and contestation of ideas around the Indian Muslim identity that continues to evolve and the ways in which many figures, men and women, both worked towards making it more encompassing and holistic, despite the internal and external challenges. Today Chris takes the Pugs into the dark recesses of social status and asks questions few are willing to ask. For example: Why do so many women who apply to rent Chris's apartments have so much student loan debt, and such low credit scores? Why do young men in the trades with no debt and good income still lose out to flashy guys with tons of debt who flash shiny objects? This is: Social status part 1/2: negotiations over object-level preferences, published by Steven Byrnes on March 7, 2024 on LessWrong. 1.1 Summary & contents This is the first of two blog posts where I try to make sense of the whole universe of social-status-related behaviors and phenomena: This post is focused on a special case of two people interacting, where they have different object-level preferences - maybe one wants to order pizza for dinner while the other wants sushi. This gets us into various topics like "leading and following", averaging different people's utility functions, being more or less "pushy", "ask culture versus guess culture", plausible deniability, politeness arms-races, and more. Then the next post, "Social status part 2/2: everything else", will layer on another heap of complexity on top of all that, related to the fact that people also have preferences related to the interaction itself, like "a preference not to be rude". That gets us into topics like dominance, prestige, getting offended, passive-aggressiveness, status, self-deprecation, and more. Some context for how I came to write this: While I often write about neuroscience and brain algorithms, these two posts have essentially none of that. They're just about systematizing everyday behavior and folk psychology, and I hope they will be generally useful as such. As it happens, my own larger project is to understand the neuroscience underlying social status behaviors (as part of this even larger project related to AI alignment). But I have no hope of figuring out the neuroscience underlying social status behaviors, if I don't understand social status behaviors in the first place. Hence these posts. I previously attempted to talk about social status a couple months ago here. I still think I was pointing towards something important and true in that old post, but it was just one little piece of the puzzle, and I described it very poorly because I was confused about the bigger picture. Anyway, I neither expect nor recommend that you read that; these two posts will hopefully be self-contained. This post is organized as follows: Section 1.2 describes the setting and some basic terminology. In particular, I use the word "negotiation" very broadly to include most everyday interactions, including making plans and decisions as a group, requesting favors, divvying up responsibilities, and even things like taking turns speaking and changing conversation topics. Section 1.3 defines two key terms for this post: "leading" and "following". If two people, Alice & Beth, are interacting, and Alice is "mostly leading" while Beth is "mostly following", that means that, when Alice & Beth have conflicting object-level preferences, the group will make decisions that follow Alice's preferences more than Beth's. I then argue that the idea of "leading" and "following" are equally applicable to both "dominance" and "prestige" interactions (in the terminology of dual strategies theory). Section 1.4 offers a toy model for the dynamic above, where Alice & Beth each has a utility function for their object-level preferences, and the group decisions are based on a weighted average of Alice's and Beth's utilities, and more "leading" simply means that your preferences get more weight in the weighted average. Thus, "leading-ness" always sums to 100%: if Alice is "70% leading" within the interaction, then Beth must be "30% leading", and so on. I discuss some insights that we get from this toy model, and also clarify a technical issue related to the incommensurability of different people's desires. Section 1.5 offers another related toy model, where there's an objective scale of "pushiness" - ranging from making strong explicit demands, to subtly hinting at one's own preferences - and where "leading" and "following" correspond respecti...

In this episode, host Sarah Morgan is interviewing Thomas Colclough.  Thomas Colclough began his career with EEOC in 1988. He has held various positions such as Investigator, Enforcement Supervisor, Local Office Director of Greensboro, NC, Local Director of the Richmond, Va. Office and Area Director of the Raleigh Area Office.  A native of North Carolina, Thomas attended Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He earned his master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also earned a Certificate in Global Studies from UNCG. Mr. Colclough served in the military for 23 years (active and reserve). In 2005, Colclough retired from the North Carolina National Guard at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is also a graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College. Thomas currently serves as the Director of Field Management Programs for the EEOC Charlotte District.  In this role, he is responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient operations of Field Offices by providing operational oversight and monitoring of program implementation and coordination of administrative services.  Thomas identifies problem areas and appropriate corrective actions. The above responsibilities, including direct supervision of the EEOC's District Directors, are performed for 15 Districts and one Field Office. In 2019, Thomas was appointed to the Caucus on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys.  The bipartisan, 19-member Commission will include congressional lawmakers, executive branch appointees, issue experts, activists, and other stakeholders who will examine social disparities affecting black men and boys in America. Based on its findings, the commission will issue policy recommendations to Congress, the White House, and federal agencies. The bipartisan commission, founded and co-chaired by thee Congresswoman Fredricka Wilson of FL, will craft legislation to implement those recommendations. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib welcomes back Gregory Clark, a past guest on this podcast. When he last talked to him, Clark had just been disinvited from giving a talk whose results he has now turned into a paper, The inheritance of social status: England, 1600 to 2022. Until recently an economics professor at the University of California, Davis, Clark is now teaching at the University of Southern Denmark. His previous books include The Son Also Rises: Surnames and the History of Social Mobility and A Farewell to Alms: A Brief Economic History of the World. Today Razib and Clark discuss his shocking finding that a simple model predicated on genetic relatedness explains the status distribution across many centuries in England. Clark finds that even where wealth is passed from father to offspring (expected in a patriarchal society), occupational status is inherited equally from mother and father, as expected in a genetic framework rather than cultural framework. Another surprising result from Clark's dataset is that the rate of social mobility has been unchanged across 400 years in England, despite massive cultural and political shifts. He also finds high rates of inheritance of social status in many other societies, with the highest in the Indian subcontinent. Razib asks Clark how it could be that the data shows such consistently similar rates of social status mobility across periods as different as Victorian England or post-World-War-II Britain. Clark also addresses why he did not work on a model that integrated cultural inheritance; in short, those models were more complex and seemed far less satisfying than his two-parameter equation. He also addresses the social media furor in response to his paper, and his defense against the charge that he's a eugenicist.
