Why the Ancient Romans Destroyed the Jewish Temple

An Interview with Dr. Ward Sanford Dr. Ward Sanford recounts the dramatic history of the ancient Romans' destruction of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. His historical novel weaves fictional characters into well-researched events, bringing the story alive for modern readers. The full arc, from 63 CE to 70 CE, unfolds across four books. In this interview, he focuses on the forces at play in the first volume, covering 63 to 66 CE, when tensions between Rome and Jerusalem began to erupt. Before becoming a novelist, Dr. Ward Sanford enjoyed a 35-year career as a highly respected scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Now he brings the same intellectual rigor and curiosity to his research and writing. He is passionate about helping believers see the historical and cultural context of first century Judea in which the earliest Christian church struggled to survive. Dr. Sanford has also been a Christian counselor for the past 13 years. The Cry for Jerusalem series discussed in this podcast explores the spiritual tensions, political chaos, and prophetic significance of a nation on the brink, as seen through Josephus's eyes. Ward has also written dozens of highly popular blogs concerning the subject matter of first century Judea and related Christian apologetics. A complete transcript is available on the Bible and Beyond website.

The Messianic Jewish Expositor

IntroductionHebrews is an amazing book. It is a book of contrasts. It contrasts the Old Covenant given through Moses with the New Covenant first prophesied through Jeremiah in the Hebrew Scriptures and later inaugurated by Yeshua at the last supper, a Passover seder, and at the cross. It was written to Jewish people not long before the second Jewish Temple was destroyed by Rome in 70 AD. Some scholars believe that it was addressed to Jewish believers only, to Jews who were born again but weak in their faith. For several reasons, which I hope to cover with you as we go through this book, I do not believe that. I believe the epistle was indeed written to born again Jews who were weak in their faith, but also to Jews who might be interested in Yeshua but had not made a profession of faith in Him. And I also believe that the author certainly hoped that the epistle would be read or explained to Jews who had no apparent interest in following Jesus; this latter group may have included people who practiced traditional Judaism - the Temple was still standing when Hebrews was written - some who were serious about their religious practice and some who may have gone along with the practice of the Jewish religion because of pressure from their peers. And this book has great application for all of us today, both Jew and Gentile.Let's begin today by reading and then discussing the first verse of the epistle. All Scriptures in this series will be from the NIV unless otherwise stated.Hebrews 1:1 “1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,”God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways. What does that mean? There were 16 writing prophets, men sent by God to proclaim His word and to make a written record of what they said. These written records survive today as the prophetic books of the Tanach or Old Testament. One of those prophets was not sent to the Jewish people although they must surely have known of his message. That was the prophet Jonah who was sent to proclaim the need for the people of Nineveh in Assyria to repent of their sins and indeed they did so and God did not bring disaster upon them. So, many prophets were sent over a great many years - hence, “at many times”; the Analytical Lexicon of the New Testament gives a translation for this as bit by bit. That makes sense to me. We have a very patient God. He doesn't give us His truth all at once because He knows that we couldn't handle it. Bit by bit might be a good thing for us to keep in mind as we share God's truth with people. We want to be careful not to feed a person who only has the ability to consume one piece of bread with a 7 course meal. We need to take our Heavenly Father's example and His truth bit by bit, at least in the beginning. And the message was also given in various ways. What does that mean? The great law giver, Moses, considered by many Jewish people to be the greatest prophet of all, and who wrote the Torah, the first 5 books of the Bible, wrote about the first Passover in ancient Egypt and the need for a blood sacrifice to preserve life. The shed blood came from lambs. Those things pointed to the first coming of our Messiah, the Lamb of God, and to the cross. But Moses also wrote about something that came even earlier. That was the very first mention in the Bible of a deliverer, our Messiah, who would in the future crush the head of the serpent who at Satan's direction deceived Eve and so led Adam and Eve to disobey God which caused something to happen that we call The Fall. God intended for us to live forever but because of the disobedience of our first parents all of us are born spiritually dead and have limited physical life spans. Let's read about this:Genesis 3:14–15 NKJV So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”The Seed that the LORD is talking about here, her Seed - the Seed of the woman - is the deliverer, the Messiah, whom we now know is the Lord Jesus. This is the first time in the Bible that a Deliverer is mentioned. This is the first foreshadowing of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus. The LORD speaking through Moses again said something of a profoundly prophetic nature in Deuteronomy:Deuteronomy 18:18–19 “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.”These verses speak of a future deliverer who like you, meaning like Moses would deliver His people from slavery and death but the deliverance of the future deliverer would be permanent. This was a prophecy about Jesus, Yeshua, and of His earthly ministry.Another prophecy of a future deliverer is in Psalm 2 where the LORD talks about His Son:Psalm 2:7–8 “I will proclaim the Lord's decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”And the Lord gives us a further hint of His coming Son in the book of Proverbs:Proverbs 30:4 “Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Whose hands have gathered up the wind? Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know!”Folks, God the Father has a Son and He has told us about Him in the Old Testament. And then we have a prophecy given to King David from the prophet Nathan who was not one of the 16 writing prophets, but was a prophet nonetheless. Listen to the Lord speaking through Nathan to David:1 Chronicles 17:11–12 “When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.”The Lord is here speaking of the throne of the Messiah Who will be King of Israel and Whose throne will be established forever. That will begin when this present age is over and Messiah, the Lord Jesus, will reign for a thousand years from Jerusalem. That time will follow the rapture and the 7 year tribulation. That time is drawing nearer every day. Maranatha! Come quickly Lord Jesus! Then there was Isaiah who told of the Messiah who would come by virgin birth and who would be God Himself and God with us:Isaiah 7:14 NIV Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.Immanuel means God with us and that's exactly who Yeshua was when He walked among us 2,000 years ago. Folks that prophecy was fulfilled about 700 years later when He was born in Bethlehem. And Isaiah also prophesied this:Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”This prophecy has only been partially fulfilled as of the date of this message - November 2025 - but rest assured that it will be completely fulfilled soon when Messiah Yeshua returns to rescue Israel, to judge the world, and to set up His 1,000 year reign.Later in his book, Isaiah prophesies about a person who would come, a Servant, who would suffer and die for our sins. This was indeed a prophecy about the Lord Jesus. He comes first as a suffering servant and only later as King and ruler, at His second coming, which we expectantly wait for now. Those of you who attend a traditional Jewish synagogue might wonder why this Suffering Servant of Isaiah, chapter 53, is not mentioned or taught about. This portion of Scripture is not included in the weekly Haftorah readings in the synagogue. This prophecy is so clearly about Jesus the Messiah that it is abhorrent to many Jewish leaders especially the Rabbis. That is why it is not taught. And then the LORD sent Jeremiah the prophet through whom the LORD promised a new covenant:Jeremiah 31:31–34 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.””What a wonderful promise from the LORD through Jeremiah. That New Covenant was inaugurated at Jesus' death and it will be completely fulfilled after all Israel is saved at the end of the 7 year Tribulation.Romans 11:26–27 “and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.””And there are many more examples that I could give you but I don't want to tire you out.We will be talking about the New Covenant in this series because it is re-stated in the letter to the Hebrews. The prophecy of the New Covenant was made a reality when Jesus the Son of God gave His life and shed his blood for us on the cross. So we begin the New Testament book of Hebrews. It is an exciting book and one that is full of contrasts. It is also a book that cannot be understood without a knowledge of the Old Testament and that is why we've been talking so much about these Old testament prophecies today. Yes, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,”My friends, none of these prophecies and the sequencing of these prophecies could be done by man. It's not a possibility. Just as the set time for God to send His son to earth, there was a set time, a time set by God, for each of the prophecies that we've discussed in this message to happen. Galatians 4:4 talks about the set time. I'd like to read it to you:Galatians 4:4 “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,”Next time we will see what God has done and is doing in these last days. We'll look further into the book of Hebrews:Hebrews 1:1–2 “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”Folks, for those of you who do not know Jesus and have not accepted Yeshua as your personal Lord and Savior, especially my Jewish brothers and sisters but also my Gentile brothers and sisters who are likewise special, I beg of you: please call upon His name and ask Him to save you today. Please don't wait! You could die today and be separated from God for eternity. You don't want that.Until the next time, my friends. God bless you. This is a public episode. Today's episode #70 is about a topic I've never before discussed on The Nourishment Mindset and it's both personal and vulnerable. Although my parents both grew up in devout Christian homes, my brothers and I were not raised with a religion. As a child growing up in North Carolina, the only time this really bothered me is when some condescending adult might say something like “bless your heart” (which doesn't mean that) when she learned our family didn't belong to a church. This type of comment served to make me feel lesser, but also rendered me skeptical about the religion itself. If Jesus taught kindness and forgiveness, how was this behavior congruent? My search for Divine Connectedness has been an on-again off-again journey. While at Duke I decided to take a class in the Divinity school and enjoyed it. Then began reading some religious texts and visiting different churches. Although interesting to me, I didn't feel “IT” and I was frankly disturbed by the concept of Hell for non-Christians. Like vaccine mandates and threats, it made me feel that the “seller” was trying to hard. So I moved on with my life. During the next two decades I sought spiritual connection through yoga and meditation, at times being more dedicated than others. And routinely and genuinely connected with the Divine through Nature. Then one day a few years ago, my son started asking some profound questions that I could not answer, so I decided to resume my search for that IT with him, but this time with some significant life experience behind (and before) me. Which is to say with a more nuanced approach, open heart and refined rebelle lens which freed me to pursue my own path.Over the last few years we have visited numerous churches (wow is there a variety of interpretations!), a non-denominational house of worship and a Jewish Temple. I also sought counsel from the people I trust most to discuss my most vulnerable questions. Tune in to learn how I've reconciled what I know in my heart with my desire to know God. (Hint: the process is not unlike deciding to nourish yourself with real, whole foods or move your body with intention.) I will leave y'all with this: once I opened my heart and soul to the Divine and finally felt IT, my fears and questions were answered in the most simple manner. The things I was sweating about are not what matters. In fact, Divine Connectedness is all that matters; from that all else flows.Let me know what you think! Throughout history, earthly rulers acknowledged a higher spiritual authority, but modern states have reversed this order—with devastating consequences for civilization and faith.Joshua Charles joins Anthony for a profound exploration of Christendom's rise and fall. They unpack Larry Arnn's controversial claim that "a Christian nation is not possible because Jesus' kingdom is not of this world," revealing how this fundamentally misunderstands Catholic teaching about Christ's authority over all creation. The conversation journeys through historical Christianity, where temporal rulers recognized their subordination to spiritual authority for over a millennium. This wasn't mere symbolism—it represented the proper ordering of society, with baptism creating an objective covenant that bound believers and nations alike. We're witnessing the culmination of centuries of spiritual rebellion, from the Reformation's fracturing of unified Christian worship to modern states declaring themselves the highest authority. As Saint Bruno of Cologne predicted, we now live in times where "faith is in secret and iniquity in public"—a telling sign of spiritual deterioration. Most chillingly, recent developments surrounding the Third Temple and red heifer sacrifices echo what Church Fathers warned would precede Antichrist. The discussion examines historical parallels, particularly Julian the Apostate's failed attempt to rebuild the Jewish Temple in 363 AD, and what these events might tell us about our own time.Rather than succumbing to despair, Joshua and Anthony emphasize hope in God's providence. They remind us that while the Church might appear to be losing on earth, her saints are being crowned in heaven, from which they reign with Christ. The conversation concludes with practical spiritual guidance for navigating these challenging times through prayer, fasting, and renewed devotion to the sacraments.Support the show********************************************************Please subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKsxnv80ByFV4OGvt_kImjQ?sub_confirmation=1https://www.avoidingbabylon.comMerchandise: https://avoiding-babylon-shop.fourthwall.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comFull Premium/Locals Shows on Audio Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1987412/subscribeRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssRumble: https://rumble.com/c/AvoidingBabylon

Please share this podcast and blog with your family and friends. I would love to bless them and encourage them as well. Now on to this week's very important message. During the past week, word was released that the Jews conducted the first animal sacrifice in 2000 years in Jerusalem, just across from the Temple Mount. Interestingly, the momentous event was kept quiet in order not to arouse any more dangerous activity in an area already under tremendous attack.Byron Stinson, the cattle rancher from Texas who bred the red heifers and sent them to Israel a few years ago, posted a short video on Facebook showing the event. While there has been much controversy as a result over whether the sacrifice was legitimate or not, the sacrifice seems to have fulfilled Torah requirements. If, indeed, the sacrifice was legitimate (and I personally think it was), then the world has entered a new era prophetically. If you're wondering what this is all about—if you're thinking, What are you talking about now, Dr. MaryAnn? Animal sacrifices? In this day and age? Now you've really lost it!— please hear me out.The first Jewish temple, built by King Solomon, was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. on the Jewish feast called Tisha b'AV or the 9th of Av. The second Jewish temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. on the same feast day. This second temple was built under the leadership and supervision of the prophet Nehemiah and was subsequently destroyed by Roman armies under the Emperor TItus. To this day, the Arch of Titus in Rome commemorates this wicked event. As a result of the Temple's destruction, the Jews have not had a Temple for 2000 years, and they are very eager to rebuild one.Why do the Jews need a Temple? They need a Temple because the sacrifices required under Jewish law for the forgiveness of sin require a Temple. But even more than that, prophecy declares that, during the Tribulation, the AntiChrist will enter the Temple and declare himself to be God. In order for the AntiChrist to enter the Temple and for Bible prophecy to be fulfilled, there must be a Temple to enter. We read this prophecy spoken by Jesus Himself in Matthew 24: 15 - 21:"So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be." So, the Bible prophesies that in the last days, there will be a Third Temple. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that everything has already been prepared for this soon-to-be-built Temple. All of the utensils have been crafted. All of the priestly garments have been sewn. The Menorah has been made according to the specifications given in the Bible. The priests have been trained for the sacrifices and other rituals.

This audio is Part 2 of the video.  The Third Temple and the Abomination that Make Desolate. In order to understand what may soon come to pass on the Temple Mount we must look at various positions regarding the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple… i.e. the third temple. We all know that one of the main obstacles in the way of rebuilding a Jewish Temple on Temple Mount are the Islamic buildings which are currently occupying this space. One possibility is based upon a little publicized rabbinic writing from a Rabbi Architect named Moshe Komsky that is linked to or cited on both the Christian study bible site Blue Letter Bible and the Jewish templemount.org site if you know where to look. I will play part of a video in which I believe well known past Knesset member and temple mount activist Yehuda Glick espouses what I believe is the very idea expressed in this Jewish paper. This proposal suggests that because the Dome of the Rock was built by what the Jews consider to be the monotheistic religion of Islam it would be suitable to not only remain on temple mount next to a Jewish temple but could indeed be incorporated INTO the House of Prayer for all Nations… i.e. the end times Jewish Temple. The paper proposes that the Dome of the Rock would become a central altar or worship area and then wings would be added onto it as houses of worship for each of the 4monotheistic religions which according to this paper includes Hinduism. This would then make this Dome of the Rock which very well could have been built right over the place of the Holy of Holies into a house of prayer for all nations as the proponents of this idea call it (but we call it a house of prayer for all religions). Actually we'll go one step further and call it the Abomination that makes Desolate should this be the route that is taken and we will explain why. Once I show this to you and explain the symbolism you will not be able to UN-see it and it should cause anyone who loves and wants to honor YHWH and Y'shua His Salvation to sigh and cry over this Abominations being done there as in Ezekiel 8's account of the writer with the ink horn.

Holy crap, did that suck! The weather went from bad to worse yesterday…with rain, snow, thunder, lighting & then some. Had a HELL of a time cleaning my truck off this morning. Thankfully, there's about 13 hours of college basketball today starting at 11am to keep me occupied! In the news this morning, stories about a new scam making it's way around the state, a former Vice Chancellor gave unauthorized raises, the NFL draft in Green Bay is going to feature a "dive bar" experience, Henry Firearms is moving ALL of it's manufacturing operations to Rice Lake, and President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order to eliminate the Department of Education. In sports, we recapped last night's final "First Four" games and looked ahead at today's schedule in the tournament. Plus, the Bucks are taking on the Lakers tonight in LA and Aaron Rodgers will NOT be a Viking next season. Elsewhere in sports, the QBs that will be featured in the second season of Netlix's "QB" show were announced yesterday, and the Trump Administration has suspended $175 million in Federal funding to the University of Pennsylvania. Let you know what's on TV tonight and talked about today being the first day of Spring! Plus, it's "Hypothetical Thursday", so we asked each other some hypothetical questions. Jean's question for Brian was: "If money weren't a concern, where would you go on vacation?" Brian's question for Jean was: "If all animals could suddenly speak, would you still eat meat?" Cool story about the New England Aquarium building a retirement home for it's older penguins, and in other aquatic news…the fish doorbell is back! Brian has been a proponent of giving anxious travelers the option of getting anesthesia before a flight, and now it looks like that might become a reality in the future as people are getting put under before lengthy tattoo sessions. We went over some betting stats & info with the brackets starting today, and a new venture from the Bare Knuckle Fighting league is coming down the pipeline. Office Cora joined us this morning to talk about what's happening in the 715 this weekend, and also had a question for us on "Hypothetical Thursday". It was: " And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a sorority girl from Georgia who's going viral because of her mugshot, a woman in Texas who won $83 million in the lottery but is being denied her jackpot, some wannabe rappers that broke into a Jewish Temple, a #FloridaWoman who did something absolutely horrific at an airport, and some American tourists FAFO'd while in Ireland for St. Paddy's Day. Send us a textIf there was ever a “Sacred Cow” in modern Zionist Christianity, it's that of a 3rd Temple. If you want to see people get hot under the collar, just tell them that the 3rd Temple is a lie of the Devil to destroy the work of Christ. The issue at hand in modern western Christianity has been led to worship Zionism over Christ. They have given up their inheritance by saying that the Jewish nation are God's chosen people, not those who claim the name of Jesus (Jew and Gentile alike). So when you tell them the 3rd Temple is an act of open rebellion against Christ and His sacrifice, they feel like you have come against God and the Bible. Not realizing that they have been misled by Zionist infiltration into the church to destroy them and the work of Christ. For more on this, please see the 4 Bibles Studies on “The Chosen People Of God”. You can find them at: brotherlance.com. We prove that Jew and Gentile alike are God's chosen people, IF they accept Jesus. They then become one new man in Christ. Ephesians 2:13-16 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.  (14)  For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,  (15)  having abolished in his flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;  (16)  and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.” So, there is no longer “Jew or Gentile” in the sight of God. Romans 10:12-13 “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him.  (13)  For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” #Temple #3rdTemple #Isreal Watch The Videohttps://youtu.be/no56Cuv3T9UWebsitehttps://brotherlance.com/third-jewish-temple/New IntroSupport the showBecome A SupporterJOIN US!> Main Website: https://brotherlance.com/> Free Book: http://weshallbelikehim.com/> Free Music: https://brotherlance.com/brother-lance-music/> Social - Gab: https://gab.com/BrotherLance

Celebrate Jesus as the Light of the world | Hanukkah on Christmas Day

As winter approaches, the twinkle of festive lights heralds the season of joy and reflection. In 2024, this season offers an extraordinary convergence, where Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, and Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, align perfectly on the calendar. Hanukkah, meaning "dedication," commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Temple in 165 BC. The festival's origin lies in the Maccabean Revolt against Hellenistic domination under Antiochus Epiphanes. This revolt led to the miraculous victory and subsequent cleansing of the Temple, commemorated by the lighting of the menorah. Lighting the menorah is a central tradition, where each candle signifies hope, divine presence, and the miraculous sustenance of the Jewish people. The lights are not functional, but symbolic—a reflection of God's enduring presence and an inspiration to live in His light. Christmas marks the incarnation of Jesus, the true Light of the world: God took human form to bring salvation to humankind. It begins with the Advent season—an anticipation of Christ's birth and eventual second coming—and proceeds into the Christmas Day festivity and beyond. From December 25th to January 6th, the "12 Days of Christmas" celebrate significant Christian figures, such as Saint Stephen, John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents. These observances call Christians to reflect on faith's steadfast examples and draw inspiration for modern life. So, we invite you to ponder the intersection of light in both traditions. The menorah's glow during Hanukkah parallels the advent candles flickering in Christian homes, together casting away darkness and embodying hope, joy, and divine presence. This confluence also finds roots in the Gospel of John, where Jesus is described celebrating Hanukkah—affirming His identity and mission as the Light of the world. The festival's themes of dedication and light resonate with Jesus' role, drawing believers to reflect on personal dedication as a living temple of the Holy Spirit, meant to illuminate God's glory. In both Hanukkah and Christmas, the invitation to "dedication" runs deeply. Hanukkah celebrates the Temple's rededication; likewise, Christmas calls for personal dedication to faith in Christ for salvation and sanctification. This convergence is an opportunity to rededicate by living out values that reflect the love and light of God. Together, as we light the menorahs and adorn Christmas trees, let us celebrate the connections between Hanukkah and Christmas, cherishing the light that shines through both of these sacred traditions.
