On today's show, Cody Roark (@CodyRoarkNFL), Mario Vetanze (@MileHighMario) and Patrick Chiotti (@Patrick Chiotti) discuss the Denver Broncos adding depth to their defensive line, analyzing Daniel Jeremiah’s selection for the Broncos with the 9th pick in his latest mock draft, and a look at Notre Dame LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. Cody, Mario, and Patrick discuss the Broncos addition of Shamar Stephen who spent a majority of his career with the Minnesota Vikings and whether or not this is a move for a camp body or for positional depth. Does this move signify how the Broncos feel about the depth in this year’s DL Draft class? NFL Network Analyst Daniel Jeremiah released his latest mock draft and has the Broncos selecting an offensive tackle with the ninth overall pick -- is the pick a reach for the Broncos or is it a move that will pay dividends in a year or two? Matthew Coller and Sam Ekstrom talk about everything that happened on Day 2 of free agency's "legal tampering period," including a surprise exit from Ifeadi Odenigbo. After a day of sitting on the Dalvin Tomlinson signing, how are we viewing it? Why we like Tomlinson as a player but have to wonder about the price tag and now that Shamar Stephen's become a cap casualty, who's next up on the DLine? Does Danielle Hunter's social media mean anything? Plus the Bears signed Andy Dalton and while your podcast hosts can laugh at them, Vikings fans can't look down upon the sorry Bears. And fan questions, including about Mackensie Alexander's potential return.

Riley Reiff was cut and now dominoes are starting fall on the offensive line. How will it change the look of the line, the free agency and draft strategies, and the results? Does Ezra Cleveland get his start at left tackle? He drafted as one, but has yet to take the snap there that any fans have seen. Does Brian O’Neill get moved over to left tackle. He’s coming up on an extension and we know left tackles get paid more than right tackles do. Do the Vikings try and get Orlando Brown Jr? Darren Wolfson confirmed earlier in the week that the Vikings had talked to the Ravens about what it would take. What about the guard positions? The Vikes needed a left guard, but if Cleveland moves to tackle, they will need two. Dominoes are falling and we don’t know yet where it will end up. What are your guesses? The Vikings have managed through the some key cuts of Kyle Rudolph and Riley Reiff to get under the cap and are sitting around $8M below it. That doesn’t give them room for any splash type free agents though. Do they need one or two? If they do, who is next to be released or traded? Shamar Stephen would clear a few, but the big fish would be if Anthony Barr was traded. That again would affect draft and free agent strategy. There might be some extensions like to Harrison Smith to free up a bit, but we aren’t talking chunks like a Barr trade, or even a Cousins trade could generate. This next week should tell us a lot. …Like the the biggest question of all… Are the Vikings an ascending team, just treading water, or worse, a descending team? Matthew Coller is joined by brilliant X's and O's analyst Ted Nguyen from The Athletic to talk about how the Vikings should build their defense and even potentially add some more modern elements after what we saw last year with offenses going wild. Ted talks about why there's an argument for drafting a cornerback despite the Vikings' need on the D-line and how quarterbacks and being bunched into game managers and volatile QBs that could have extreme highs and lows.
Are Andre Patterson and Eric Kendricks just gassing up their teammate, or is there something to their comments? We'll talk about the strange COVID-19 false positive incident of Sunday, and spend the show breaking down Shamar Stephen. Patterson and Kendricks have spent a lot of breath on defending Stephen's "invisible" contributions, but we can look at the tape to see if they show up. And while there's some merit to defensive tackles opening things up for linebackers, that doesn't comprise the whole of their duties. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! In this episode, Eric Eager and Nick Olson join Jayson Brown to discuss COVID-19, draft strategies, positional learning curves, and rebuilding. To start the episode, Eric helps us to under the “drastic” or “extreme” response to COVID-19 in North America. Eric helps us to understand that the multiplicative nature of COVID-19’s infectiousness poses a great danger to the healthcare system. By practicing social distancing and improving cleanliness, we can flatten the curve which gives healthcare systems the ability to effectively treat people as needed Next up, Nick challenges the conventional wisdom that the Vikings should address their worst starters in the opening rounds of the draft. While Pat Elflein and Shamar Stephen are among the worst starters at their respective positions, getting better at cornerback, especially after Xavier Rhodes was released, and wide receiver will likely net us more wins overall. Eric builds on Nick’s point by pointing to recent work at Pro Football Focus by Mike Renner and Timo Riske letting us know why we should address needs in free agency and how learning curves can delay the returns when drafting talented players. Eric also reminds us that the best Vikings draft picks in recent memory weren’t needs based picks citing Randy Moss, Adrian Peterson, Robert Smith, and Daunte Culpepper. Nick Olson’s reasons for optimism in 2020 Coaching Kirk Cousins Young Stars Front Office Eric gives us a run down on his article in which he discusses year over year defensive performance and then talks about how the Vikings can apply those principles to field a strong defense in 2020. Good morning Horners! Game day is here for the Vikings vs Falcons and the guys at Good Morning Gjallarhorn has you covered in only the way GMG can. Which of course is through humor, opinions and analysis… And as Ted would say, not always good, but always fun. We start the your dive into the game with reports of Stefon Diggs having missed a practice and list with a hamstring injury. Hopefully it is nothing and he’s over it [there is word that he will play]. We would hate to see something like drag on. If either Diggsy or Adam Thielen are out for any extended periods of time, the opposing defenses will blanket the healthy WR and probably to the detriment of the offense. That lead to the question of who will be the WR3? Will Olabisi Johnson get the job, Chad Beebe, or newcomer Josh Doctson? If Bisi grabs it, can he hold on? We’ll find out plenty during the game. Speaking of injuries, Dalvin Cook looks to be 100% healthy. Hopefully he stays that way especially with the emphasis by Mike Zimmer that he wants to run the ball more. If the offensive lines can open up some running room for him, it will be a good day and should help take the pressure off of Kirk Cousins. The Falcons are hoping for the same for Devante Freeman. If the vaunted Zimmer defense has problems against the run, it will be advantageous for Matt Ryan and Julio Jones to open things up when they are not worried about a run defense. That leads into the pass rush having to make up the difference. Hopefully [and it is game 1, so hope is high], the combination and rotation employed by Andre Patterson does the trick. This will be our first real opportunity to compare this year’s Shamar Stephen to last season’s Sheldon Richardson. The best quote of the show was a comment by Drew after Ted thought that we should win. He said, “the old pessimistic bastard is coming around for once.” Ted replied, “Hit me up Sunday night.” Come on Ted. let the hope be with you! We did some game predictions including Ted with Jeanna Thomas over at the Falcoholic. Guesses with good outcomes from Alexander Mattison, Kyle Rudolph and Danielle Hunter. So what are your predictions? We want to hear in the comments. Then enjoy Dave as he summoned his inner John Madden. It was fun. Go Vikings! Let’s win the the game! SKOL! Good morning Horners! We have the Vikings versus Seahawks game reaction and recap on this episode of “GMG In The Raw.” You can watch and listen to how Ted Glover, Drew Bunting, and Dave Stefano react immediately following the game. Dave even took copious notes blowing Drew's mind away in the process. Kirk Cousins was showing some mobility, a good thing. We like that! We wanted to see a better running game, better run defense and see fewer wide receivers being open against that defense. These things were still there and we wondered could it be because the Minnesota Vikings were running their base, or bland defense, stuck in a simple zone scheme, could it be because Linval Joseph and Shamar Stephen weren’t playing, or just that it's the preseason and head coach Mike Zimmer doesn't want to show anything? Drew noted that when the second team defense comes in, they show more fire and that the level of excitement goes up in the stadium. “Their energy jumps.” Ifeadi Odenigbo did an outstanding job all night. Cameron Smith blitzed but whiffed on the sack. The scariest point of the evening came on the offense when Alexander Mattison had his leg bent in a very awkward position. All of us thought with Vikings fan dread, that he was going to be injured on that play, but he got back up and continue to play just fine. We've noted how he seems to get stronger as the game goes on. Oh, and what a night Boone had! We felt he secured the RB3 spot with that performance, and Zimmer liked his special teams play even more. Kyle Sloter had a very good game. We discussed why he should relieve Kirk Cousins as the QB2 in this week's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Both Dave and Drew were adamant that he earned that look, but Ted wasn't as convinced. He still thinks that Sean Mannion did nothing to lose his QB2 status. Yes, he threw the pick 6, but he drove down the field and scored on the next series. We are all to use to the team laying down after something as adverse as of miss-ran route that results in a pick and causing a huge swing in the scoring. After seeing the game Dave doesn’t think Sloter’s status has to do with the games. It has to do with practices and what support he brings to the rest of the QBs in the support role. He may be too inexperienced to see and help, at least in Zimmer’s mind. You'll have to listen to catch the rest of the GMG impressions on players like Kaare Vedvik, Dan Bailey, Matt Wile, Brandon Zylstra, and Dru Samia. Lastly, the guys think Dave should die his beard purple for week one. Should he? Like, subscribe, and rate us on your favorite podcast aggregator. Then shout SKOL! Good morning Horners! Every once in a while, we open the show to listener questions, and today on GMG we do just that. We open the show talking about Minnesota Vikings running back Khari Blasingame. "Who?" You will have to listen to find out. 1. The greatest playoff game in Vikings history. Was it the Minneapolis Miracle, or was it in 1987 against the San Francisco 49ers? 2. Michael asks us who will emerge as the offensive team leader and can it be Garrett Bradbury? 3. Daily Norseman’s own, Just_Rob asks will Dru Samia compete for the starting job and who will be the surprise veteran cut? 4. What if there is a surprise trade? The guys here dream of Trent Williams who is very disappointed with the Redskins. 5. We return with Just_Rob asking if Kyle Sloter is undiscovered GOAT and is the Sloter-mania real? 6. The great Manbear Pigg asks if Chad Beebe or Brandon Lylstra be able to take the WR3 slot? A great discussion ensues including Jordan Taylor, Dillon Mitchell, and previous WR3s Jarius Wright and Aldrich Robinson. 7. Ryno asks who's going to step up and be the 3T defensive tackle? Shamar Stephen comes to the top of the list, but also discussed was Jaleel Johnson, Jalyn Holmes, and even Hercules Matta’afa. 8. The kind and wonderful Mary asks us which 3 rookies are we most excited to watch. Ted, Drew and Dave give their answers. We end the show with a couple of Ted stories about how he was recruited to play college ball, and they include a great Don Glover quote. This and many other things in the show will have you laughing loudly, so listen at work and drive your fellow employees nuts, or listen wherever you feel free to bust up laughing. Good morning Horners! The old men got back together to discuss the Minnesota Vikings effort so far in free agency. The show, due to its recording date, does not include last night signing of free-agent guard Josh Kline, but does everybody else. Video Edition Starting out with the re-findings of CJ Ham, Mat Wile, Dan Bailey, and of course Anthony Barr and his sensitive stomach. The team did also tender Anthony Harris and Rashod Hill. The team also got the 2017 band back together resigning Shamar Stephen who spent a year away with the Seattle Seahawks. The biggest loss so far, being with Sheldon Richardson. We wish the big man well. We take a funnier look at what has transpired, because why not? There is humor to be found everywhere so we try to take advantage of it. We acknowledge the absolute master skills of the Vikings Wizard, Rob Brzezinski. Without him, the team would be a whole lot worse shape. We finished the show with a rapid-fire section guaranteed to have you amazed. Like, subscribe, and ring that damn bell! Then shout SKOL! As always, enjoy the watch! Learn more about your ad choices. After each week of NFL football games for the 2017-2018 season, the Heads 'N Tales podcast will be posting an episode dedicated to injuries and health & safety topics surrounding the NFL. Specifically we will talk about possible prevention strategies, the rulebook, equipment and other injury buzz around the league. My co-host and strategist for these episodes will be one of my closest friends, Josh Boyd (hence the J in "JK"..I'm the K...). Josh and I grew up playing baseball together. Josh was a division-1 center fielder for Monmouth University and experienced his fair share of injuries throughout his career. Although Josh never played organized football, the dude flat-out knows the game of football and undoubtably knows more about the ins-and-outs of the sport better than I do from both a fan and x's & o's perspective. Our intention for these episodes is to spark conversations around topics that are usually brushed under the rug or only minimally covered in the hopes of making football and all sports safer for the athletes who play them.
