Think about the last time you had to time something perfectly. Maybe it taking that perfect swing at the baseball, or catching a flight after a commute, or making a high-stakes decision. In the world of high-risk pregnancy, clinicians play a constant game of high-stakes timing with a usual medication called antenatal corticosteroids. Given to moms at risk of giving birth early, these steroids are a gamechanger for a preterm neonate. But there's a catch. If you give them too early, the benefits fade. If you give them too late and she delivers very quickly, they don't have time to work. A brand-new study published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology by Mark Clapp et al reveals just how incredibly difficult this balancing act is. This data shows that nearly 26% of pregnant individuals who received these steroids actually went on to deliver completely full-term, exposing babies to medications they might not have needed. So how do we as clinicians solve this OB Goldilocks problem where the stakes are a newborn baby's health? On today's episode, we break down the data behind 'maximizing benefit while avoiding overuse' and what it means for real world practice.Strong Coffee Company - Protein Coffee PLUS MORE; Get 20% OFF | Promo Code: CHAPANOSPINOBG https://promocode.to/strong-coffee-company/chapanospinobg-hbv1. What happens when you drop generative AI into the middle of a liberal arts curriculum? This week on Off Center, Scott sits down with Davis Schneiderman at Lake Forest College to find out. We dive into the HUMAN project, a campus-wide experiment putting AI tools directly into the hands of humanities students and professors. Instead of panicking or running from the tech, Davis argues that writers, artists, and historians need to get their hands dirty with AI to actually understand and critique it. From historical Chicago chatbots to the future of experimental fiction, this conversation explores why the creative critical thinking skills taught in the humanities are our best defense in an AI-driven world.References Burroughs, W. Engineering Hope: Ken Atkinson and Brian ReiffIn the heart of rural Zimbabwe, where roads often wash away during the rainy season and clean water is scarce, a powerful partnership has formed — one that blends innovation with compassion. Faculty and students from Cedarville University's School of Engineering and Computer Science have teamed up with Karanda Mission Hospital to tackle these serious infrastructure issues while creating opportunities for ministry. The collaboration began when former missionary Ken Atkinson, now a Cedarville engineering lab technician, returned from Karanda with a heavy heart and a hopeful vision. The hospital faced severe water shortages and needed help.Cedarville students rose to the occasion. They engineered a small-scale municipal water treatment plant, creating a system that could purify river water and save lives — especially in a region where wells had run dry.But the mission didn't stop with water. Seeing how local roads were often impassable, Cedarville students, including recent graduate Brian Reiff, designed and built a pull grader — a massive earthmover that attaches to Karanda's tractor. What began as a senior design project quickly became a symbol of how technical skills can serve a greater purpose.More than just technical accomplishments, these projects are shaping lives. Students who once saw themselves working in labs or offices are now exploring how their skills can be used in missions. Some are even preparing to return to Karanda long-term.From clean water to better roads, from Ohio to Zimbabwe, this collaboration proves that engineering can be a ministry — solving physical problems while planting seeds of hope.Listen to this story of hearts and minds united for a cause greater than themselves on this week's Cedarville Stories podcast.https://share.transistor.fm/s/81f4fd7chttps://youtu.be/Dy3tcM4bcBU

After many years of traumatic and costly circumstances, Stan was led on a journey that would take him from missionary to teacher to CPA and from Alaska to Atlanta where God would use his missions experience and accounting background to serve many nonprofits.    At CapinCrouse, Stan helps faith-based nonprofits strengthen their governance, strategy, and operations, and his mission-field experience provides a deep personal understanding of ministry challenges to his consulting work. He previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Crown Financial Ministries and now draws on over 35 years of experience to help organizations thrive with integrity and purpose.    Stan is also passionate about leading his family in a legacy of generosity, Kingdom work, and entrepreneurship, and he is full of practical wisdom to guide people into doing the same in their own families.   Major topics include: Stan's remarkable backstory of faith and missions work in Alaska Navigating traumatic events and a crisis of faith Pivoting into bivocational ministry  Becoming CPA through Alaska Game and Fish Volunteering as budget coaches and seminar instructors with Crown Became chief financial officer at Crown Financial after 20 years volunteering Establishing rhythms and protocols for executive sabbaticals  Helping CFM transition from radio to sharing principle world wide Story of coming to work for CapinCrouse  Personal takeaways from leaders in the generosity space Their family's journey to a financial finish line Equipping kids and grandkids for generosity  Developing family core values Their “family legacy experiment” What to look for in an organization as a donor QUOTES TO REMEMBER “If I can't be on the front lines of ministry in a remote setting, then I will be part of the supply chain, and I will do the best I possibly can to help those who can go and are willing to go to have the best administrative support possible.” “In many ways, I had to give up my passion to be a full time missionary and that was really difficult spiritually. But I came to understand that God had chosen to give us a child with disabilities, and that became my primary ministry.”  “I love that I get to continue to marry my passion for missions, for ministry, along with the accounting experiences that God's given me, and I get to live the dream in an ongoing fashion.” “For me, the real learning came when I understood that God owns it all, not just the ten percent.” “Money really isn't a big deal. You can lose all your money in a day, and you can get it all back in a day.” “Money is never the issue, it's just an indicator of where the heart is.” “It's one thing to have a legacy of faith that's generations long, but it's also exciting to be in that first or second generation. It comes back to our first guiding principle, that faith has to be personal and it has to be yours, not some family member's that's preceded you.” “Kingdom expands when you have more followers of Jesus who are committed to following Him in business, ministry or a combination. But it takes all of us working together to make sure the next generation is equally as passionate, committed, and engaged in Kingdom work.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW CapinCrouse Injoy Stewardship Solutions Crown Financial Ministries National Christian Foundation (see our interview with President Emeritus, David Wills) Ronald Blue and Co., CPA (see our interview with founder, Ron Blue) The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Philippians 4:12-13 | The Secret of Being Content I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. Rick Reiff is our guest this week to discuss his essay in the Fall 2024 Baseball Research Journal, "Gavy Cravath's Hall-Worthy 200 Home Runs."  Cravath, a late arrival, played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues and led the National League in home runs in six of those seasons, from 1913 to 1919. Cravath also led the Senior Circuit in RBI twice, in on base percentage twice and slugging percentage three times. Despite being the preeminent home run hitter in the Deadball Era, Cravath remains on the outside looking in for Hall of Fame induction. Reiff makes the case to remedy this.In part 2, Craig and Rex talk about the Rays playing their 2025 regular season at the Yankees' spring training home, the latest billion-dollar boondoggle to return the Houston Astrodome, an aging eyesore, to usefulness and how to turn a juice box to an ice box.Errata: Craig, its the Donner Party, not the Bonner Party. You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books through our store at Bookshop.org. That's more than 40 cups of coffee for free! Cake Recipe: 300 g sugar 4 middle-sized eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar 280 g wheat flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 2-deciliter milk (2/10th of a liter) 70 grams butter (lightly salted) Topping: 130 grams butter 175 grams of coconut flakes 260 grams of brown sugar 1-deciliter milk (1/10th of a liter) Whip vanilla, sugar, and eggs. Take your time: the longer you whip it, the better ;) Mix baking powder with flour and gently turn it into the dough through a sieve so that the flour does not clump. Cut the butter into small cubes and heat it in a pan with milk. Don't let it boil. When the butter is melted, put it into the dough. The whole dough comes in an ovenproof dish lined with baking paper. I use an ovenproof dish of approx. 30 x 24 cm with a reasonably high edge, so there is room left for the filling. Bake the cake for 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 175 degrees celsius hot air until almost done. Topping: Put coconut flakes, butter, milk, and brown sugar in a pan, bring to a boil while stirring, and remove from the heat immediately. When the cake is done, take it out of the oven, which is screwed up to 225 celsius. Spread the filling over the cake and put it back in the oven - bake for another 6 minutes. Let the dream cake cool and then it is ready to be enjoyed Send us pics and vids of how your cake turned out! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
