This podcast goes out to all the Parrot heads out there. Son of a Son of a Sailor is the eighth studio album by Jimmy Buffett, and is the follow-up to his breakout album “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.” This is Buffett's highest charting album of the 70's, peaking at number 10 in the U.S. Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He lived in Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama growing up, and began playing guitar at Auburn. He recorded a country album and went to work at Billboard Magazine in Nashville briefly after college, then moved to Key West to serve as the first mate on the Petticoat III yacht. He would also develop what would become his genre of music while in Key West amongst the sea going vessels.Buffett discovered the profit in touring early, and his focus would turn to live shows as well as other business ventures. Jimmy Buffett is supposedly worth around $550 million today, making him one of the richest musicians in the world. If you're wondering where the term “Parrot Head” comes from, Buffett made a comment in a 1985 concert in Cincinnati about the fans wearing Hawaiian shirts and parrot hats who returned to his concerts again and again. A member of the Coral Reefer Band coined the term "Parrot Head" as a nod to the Dead Heads who followed the Grateful Dead on tour and the name stuck.Bruce brings this Caribbean-infused music this week. Son of a Son of a SailorThis title track opens the album, and was inspired by Buffett's grandfather, James Delaney Buffett. Jimmy Buffett saw a picture of his grandfather standing on the docks in Nova Scotia where his grandfather grew up. He settled as an adult in Mobile, Alabama, and hadn't returned to Nova Scotia until he was 84. The picture showed him looking at an old ailing schooner, and the lyrics reflect looking back on a sailing life and family.MañanaSupposedly this song is about things Buffett did in a week he spent living on his boat in the British Virgin Islands. Mañana means “tomorrow” in Spanish, and can be a term for putting things off indefinitely.Livingston Saturday NightThis is a song about going for a night on the town. It was used in a movie called “Rancho Deluxe,” released in 1975 starring Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston playing cattle rustlers in Livingston Montana. It also appeared in the 1978 movie "FM."Cheeseburger in ParadiseHere's the big hit from the album. It reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100, and is the lead song from Buffett's greatest hits album. The lyrics describe a guy trying to eat healthy, but who can't resist the temptation of the cheeseburger. The song itself was inspired by an event where Buffett was caught out in the Caribbean on a boat with a broken icebox, where he had to live for several days off canned food and peanut butter. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme to the motion picture “Which Way Is Up?” by StargardThis comedy starring Richard Pryor was a remake of an Italian comedy from 1972 called “The Seduction of Mimi.” STAFF PICKS:Psycho Killer by The Talking Heads Wayne's staff pick is straight from the CBGB club in Now York City, and is the first "hit" from the Punk/Alternative/New Wave band. While it didn't make it into the top 40, it did crack the top 100. The lyrics represent the thoughts of a serial killer who has already killed and probably will not stop. What's Your Name by Lynyrd SkynyrdRob features a song written by Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington inspired by a time when the band was drinking at a hotel bar, got kicked out, and went to a hotel room instead while trying to pick up a groupie. The incident did not happen in Boise, however. Lynyrd Skynyrd had been tragically affected by a plane crash by the time this song was released.Serpentine Fire by Earth, Wind & FireLynch brings us some 70's funk and horns. The name "serpentine fire" comes from a yoga pose. The song hit number 1 on the R&B charts and number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Earth, Wind & Fire is known for hits upbeat, positive funk.Lovely Day by Bill WithersBruce redeems another great song from Big Pharma. Before Astra Zeneca used this to advertise their drug Farxiga, it was a hit from Bill Withers' 1977 album "Menagerie." Withers wrote this song with Skip Scarborough, and it went to number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 6 on the Billboard R&B Chart. Withers holds a note for 18 seconds, the longest held note for any top 40 singe. NSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Don” by Kalyanji-AnandjiWe finish up this week's podcast with an Indian composer duo writing for a Bollywood film..

Deniece Williams shared a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with pop singer Johnny Mathis in 1978 with the duet “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late”. The duet also topped the Black Singles and Adult Contemporary charts. Williams also topped the dance charts with her disco single “I’ve Got the Next Dance”. Mathis and Williams also recorded the popular theme to the 1980s sitcom Family Ties, “Without Us”.Williams moved on to the American Recording Company (ARC) in the early 1980s where she scored the top ten R&B smash hit “Silly” in 1981. The following year, yet another famed producer, Thom Bell, helped Williams score another #1 R&B chart-topper with her remake of The Royalettes’ “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle,” which became a Top 10 pop hit as well, reaching #10.In 1984, Deniece released the album Let’s Hear It for the Boy, in which the title track reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was featured on the soundtrack to Footloose. The song would prove to be the biggest pop hit of her career – and the last. She also contributed vocals, along with Maurice White, to the song “And Then” from Weather Report’s album Mr. Gone released in 1982. She continued releasing albums during the 1980s such as Hot On The Trail (1986), Water Under The Bridge (1987), and As Good As It Gets (1988), which featured her last Top Ten hit to date, “I Can’t Wait”, written by Skylark.Although Deniece had recorded one inspirational song on almost each of her albums, it was in 1980 that her musical career path began change toward one of her favorite things, Gospel music. She joined with friends Phillip Bailey (Earth, Wind and Fire fame), Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo to present a gospel show at a popular Los Angeles club named The Roxy. The show was called “Jesus At the Roxy”. Deniece felt strongly about it saying, “God did something miraculous. Over three hundred people were saved”, as reported in an interview with Gospel Today Magazine. After that, both Bailey and Williams decided to pursue careers in Christian music. In 1983, Deniece and Bailey recorded “They Say”, an atmospheric, slow praise song that builds towards the end with rousing words of praise. The song was written by songwriters Skip Scarborough and Terri McFaddin and received airplay on both Urban and Gospel Black radio. Deniece later recorded the song with Christian artist Sandi Patti and won a Grammy for it. In 1984, Deniece sang a Gospel song at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards. She sang an acapella version of her 1977 composition “God Is Amazing”. In 1986, she would release her first full-length gospel album, “So Glad I Know” (Sparrow 1121; # 8-gospel) which brought her two Grammy awards.Deniece would continue to write, record and release Gospel music for the next several years. From 1996 to 2004, she presented her own BBC radio show in the UK, showcasing new gospel and inspirational music. During that time (1999) she recorded the Gospel album This Is My Song, which brought her another Grammy award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.Deniece continues to work on countless projects and is still quite active in the music industry today. She has an incredible four-octave range and distinctive soprano voice. Her vocal range was also pointed out by The New York Times, “Miss Williams mounted a spectacular vocal display in which her penetrating, feline soprano soared effortlessly to E flat above high C, and she worked various vowel sounds into prolonged feats of vocal gymnastics”.In pointing to Deniece’s similar vocal ability as her former musical icon and colleague (Minnie Riperton), Mark Anthony Neal in referencing Jill Scott’s agility in displaying vocal acrobatics, states, “Scott draws on her upper register recalling the artistry of the late Minnie Riperton and “songbird” Deniece Williams”. According to Monica Haynes of Post-Gazette.com, “Williams has the kind of range that would make Mariah Carey quiver”! View the Deniece Williams Discography here. Funky Pearls vol 782 special Rena Scott Rena Scott was inducted into the R&B Hall on August 21st, 2016 in Detroit, Michigan along with Smoky Robinson, Dione Warwick, Kathy Hughes and many more. Rena has a new Hot Single “A LOVE THANG” Remix Soulful Jazzy BM Remix that released on February 25th, 2017 in the Netherlands as a soulful dance song. The song is written by the talented Lloyd Tolbert and Rena Scott is now soulfully remixed at TheRoomRecordings here in Holland. The song A Love Thang received a Grammy nomination in 2005 for Best New R&B Album in the Urban Adult Contemporary Category. It is time to do a new release of this major hit. She is pushing her legacy and music forward with her experiences toward the young and the gifted singers, writers and producers. With her new release single ‘A Love Thang’ Rena also reaches out to her fans here in Europe. Rena Scott performs with several new young and established artists, producers creating the musical bridge towards the future. She has 3 new single releases. They are remixes of her classic Hit “Remember” on the Room Recordings Label released on September 16th, 2016. Her first Christmas song “Christmas Time Is Here” was released on Nov 17th, 2016. Starting out at age 12 in her hometown Detroit, singing for local Baptist congregations, singer Rena Scott entered her first major talent contest at age 13. Soon afterwards came her very first record. "I Just Can't Forget That Boy" at the age of 15. She blossomed as a performer, and began playing two or three gigs a night on weekends at local nightclubs. She opened for many of the Motown acts like The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Originals and many other popular artists. When the "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin (also a native Detroiter) needed a third backup singer for a few gigs, the then 18 year old Scott got her million-to-one shot at singing on stage with her idol at the Pine Knob Ski Resort in Northern Michigan, and more importantly, in front of thousands at Carnegie Hall! In those days, she patterned her own singing after her. Scott then started working to develop her own style as she listened to other artists like Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, and Barbra Streisand. She emerged with a unique sound. Having had that one night experience at Carnegie, Scott vowed she would return there someday to perform. Scott began recording and/or touring with such greats as The Jazz Crusaders, David Ruffin, Bobby Womack, Phil Perry, Ronnie Mc Neir and Michael Henderson (with whom she recorded the smash hit "Take Me I'm Yours" from Henderson's album "In The Nighttime" in 1979) With her growing years of experience and popularity, Scott wowed many thousands in other places; first the nightclubs in Detroit, then later in Los Angeles. She toured in the 80's with The Crusaders, and came on board with founding Crusaders members Joe Sample, Wilton Felder and Stix Hooper after the departure of Randy Crawford, performing their 1979 pop hit "Street Life" performing for crowds of up to 50,000 people, touring top R & B and Jazz festivals in the U.S. and Europe that included the famous Montrose Jazz Festival in Montrose Switzerland.. While she's always made her living singing in clubs, singing backup, performing with legendary figures and doing jingles for companies like Levi's 501 Jeans and Sunny Delight, the stop and start nature of Scott's own solo recording career has made for an intense emotional roller coaster. After touring with Michael Henderson on the strength of their hit single “Take Me I’m Yours’s” in 1978, Henderson's record company Buddha Records signed her to a record deal. She recorded the half disco, half R&B ballad album titled `Come on Inside'. The album was produced by the powerhouse R&B team Mtume and Reggie Lucas, former jazz musicians who had scored pop hits for Stephanie Mills, Roberta Flack & Donnie Hathaway, Phyllis Hyman and Lou Rawls. After the record company folded, she left Detroit for a short stop in Las Vegas where she did shows at Caesar's Palace and the Landmark Hotel. She then decided to settle in Los Angeles to seek new recording opportunities. Before hooking up with The Crusaders, she had started writing songs with veteran producer and songwriter Skip Scarborough who wrote songs for LTD, Anita Baker, Earth, Wind & Fire and many other artists. In 1989 Scott re-emerged on Sedona Records with the album `Love Zone', from which the first single "Do That To Me One More Time" hit the Billboard R&B Singles chart. The follow-up "I Could Use A Kiss", which became her first video, also received extensive airplay. Soon after, she once again fell victim to label traumas. There were three failed deals in all before Rena started her own independent label, Amor Records. She started a fruitful creative song writing relationship with songwriter/producer Lloyd Tolbert, and emerged her label debut album, `Let Me Love You', distributed by KES Distribution. It showcased Scott on the sultry title track as right at home; singing soulfully about that first spark of romance. Yet the seductive invitation taps into something much deeper, reflecting the passion of her relationship to audiences worldwide over a fascinating musical lifetime. That same track "Let Me Love You" was featured in two key scenes of the HBO Cinemax film `Love and Action in Chicago', starring Courtney Vance, Regina King, Kathleen Turner and Ed Asner. I hope to inspire others whose dreams are as vast as mine." She eventually plans to write a book and maybe even make a movie about her life. The musical trials and tribulations, as well as the triumphs, including the early years in Detroit experiencing her parent’s violent marriage. Rena is now an advocate against domestic violence. Rena’s CD "Take Me Away" was released October 26th 2010. The 13-song set contains songs that Scott co-wrote and co-produced with Tolbert. It includes covers of some of her all-time favorites like Joy And Pain and "Don't Ask My Neighbors". Rena is excited to work with Producer Lloyd Tolbert once again. She is working on her new single “Until you Come Back To Me” a remake of her mentor Aretha Franklin to be released in March, 2017. She working another Christmas song and Track she wrote with the late great Skip Scarbough. It features all the original Jazz Crusaders playing on it. stay tuned for her up and coming tour to a city near you called “Rena Scott Sings Motown” with the talent, the drive, and the passion to continue rising to the top! So it was a full moon on Saturday night, but to the naked eye that pale orb didn't look any less replete come Sunday, which prompted me into a fully vocal, soulfully stretched salvo of musical niceness for The Cosmic Jam. Though I never tire of jazz, sometimes it's good to have a few less notes.....lol. Focussing on songs, singers, grooves and less abstract emotions the full moon soul session strays from the beaten path into territory of blue eyed brilliance and boogified danceability with a distinctly jazzy undertow, I love all kinds of Soul music, but I'm not one to dwell on the heartbreak and angst laden side of the tracks, this is (mainly) happy music to lift us beyond the cloying cold of these humdrum winter days. (Obviously not applicable if you're reading this on the other side of the world or in the tropical zones). Keeping it just about 100% vinyl I strapped a selection of vintage goodies on my back and braved the bitter streets of London to deliver this edition of The Cosmic Jam. Maybe these wintry conditions makes me relish the radio even more, or maybe this show was just the tonic I needed... or as I commented during proceedings, maybe it 's just playing tunes that I truly love. Certainly there are some songs here that have lingered with me for many years, the kind of perennial faves that always have the power to come back and reignite that special flame. Extraordinary songs like "Ordinary Joe", which has some of the most killer lines in popular music... "Don't let time and space confuse you, don't let name and form abuse you, just let Big Joe Williams blues you".... always raises and smile and a little shudder of recognition of the utter brilliance of it. Everything But The Girl, Joni Mitchell and Ace may not be everyone's idea of Soul music, but these songs resonate with me in a soulful way. The second hour gets deep with an epic Skip Scarborough tune from Creative Source that rolls and grooves it's way through seven minutes of bliss. Yes we're loved up and spinning some classics, Arnold Blair..... evergreen. Lihue and Stella , beach soul? Then boogified in the final run, with gospel fire digging the sound of music. Ya get me tho? I've obviously run out of worthwhile things to say, so I'll just remind you of a little party we're having, celebrating the talents of three complete dons and having some seasonal fun in a venue that's been close to our hearts for many a moon, and is probably/definitely due to be sold.. sad!! Anyway until next week when the noodle will no doubt be back, be good, be groovy. Peace P.x 1.Ultra High Frequency - We're On The Right Track 2. Don Brown - Don't Lose Your Love 3. An Indepth Interview with Rena Scott to discuss her Career and her latest Cd " Take Me Away", Rena Scott has lived out her dream for most of her career, playing a supporting role with the cream of the crop musicians. Though her solo career is not as noted, the Detroit-born songstress was always in the spotlight in other capacities: whether opening for Motown stars like The Temptations, singing background for Aretha, replacing Randy Crawford in The Jazz Crusaders or working alongside Michael Henderson on several occasions, including his 1978 classic, In The Night-Time. Scott also developed a songwriting relationship with Skip Scarborough, writing tracks for Earth, Wind & Fire and Anita Baker.
