GRAMMY® Balloted Club Nouveau, Timex Social ClubGrammy Award Balloted singer and music label executive, Jay King, was elected CEO/President of the California Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) in June of 2019.GRAMMY® Award Balloted Jay King/Club Nouveau's music & samples have been featured in many TV & Film Soundtracks including the #1 Hit Movie "US" by Director Jordan Peele! This week, I look at how a brand can stay relevant decade after decade. As a veteran mogul Jay King brings as much humility to the field as he does what has been called his genius. With three decades of continuous achievements in music, management, film/TV/radio, consulting and publishing; King has made an indelible impression. He claims Northern California in general as his hometown due to a nomadic youth spent between many of the Bay Area's cities; as well as Alaska for birthing his career. There was a deep musical undercurrent added to his early years by a clan which boasted a number of ministers, extending from his great-grandfather through a number of cousins, who all played instruments as well. His great uncle, Saunders King, a respected jazz/blues guitarist, offered the West Coast the first family hit in the 1940's—‘The S.K. Blues'—adding to the musical backdrop of King's childhood. In 1986, King starting the independent record label JAY Records to release the Timex Social Club hit ‘Rumors' and ushered in the biggest selling single of 1986 (3.5 million copies) and becoming the #1 R&B single on the Billboard Charts. With a Top 10 single on the Billboard Pop charts for over 56 weeks, King watched his life change as his music became an unprecedented hit. What he'd produced was history-making, as nobody had before taken an R&B song from an indie label to such heights. Although having independently produced, pressed and marketed his own music King was without the money to compete at radio plays and had to be creative with promoting. “There were challenges. You couldn't reach out to stores, and social media didn't exist then so you couldn't let people know with a click of a button that you had something out. You had to get out and hustle. People were making fun of me and laughing because I was out hustling records.” Bypassing traditional methods, King utilized Macola Records because of its position as an indie manufacturer with no association to a major label.Such moves from a 24 year old entrepreneur made the year 1986 even more memorable, as he quickly followed up with a label/production deal with Warner Brother Records and his King Jay Records label, subsequently releasing the first Club Nouveau single ‘Jealousy' and the album, ‘Life, Love & Pain'. After ‘Jealousy' went to #8 on the Billboard R&B charts in September of 1986, followed by ‘Situation #9' (#4 Billboard R&B charts), 1987 came in with an even bigger bang when ‘Lean On Me' was released in February and became #1 Billboard Pop/#2 Billboard R&B platinum single, winning a Grammy for R&B Song of The Year.Club Nouveau's music is in heavy demand commercially in movies and is sampled in many of today's artists hit makers like Ashanti, Chris Brown and many more. The group is STILL on the scene, performing hundreds of LIVE concert a year & recording NEW music!© 2025 All Rights Reserved© 2025 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Screenwriter Chuck Hayward (WandaVision/Dear White People) takes us on a trip to New Jersey in the 80s to discuss the dramatization of principal Joe Clark's life, LEAN ON ME.Lead by a showstopping performance from Morgan Freeman, and directed by the legendary John G. Avildsen, Lean on Me tackles the complicated real life story of a principal, with many flaws of his own, taking on an issue passed down to him from years of systemic injustice for inner city children. We discuss the lukewarm reception this film met at its premiere, and its journey to becoming an American classic, and a television staple. We also take a deep dive into Freeman's career, ranking our favorite performances of his, and trying to figure out what the heck happened at the Academy Awards that year. Tack on a beautiful rendition of the Eastside High Alma Mater from Kenny and Chuck, and some WandaVision reception talk (How could we not?), and you have an episode for the ages.Find Chuck Hayward at: twitter.com/chuckoffPodcast Like It's 1999: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-like-its-1999/id1316214754Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeitsInstagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeitsReddit: reddit.com/r/podcastlikeits Hosted on Acast. Sometimes all you need is community and connection. Life is difficult to navigate alone, knowing you can ask for help or guidance can be a huge weight lifted off one's shoulders. As one professor demonstrated, which Katrina discovered via a TikTok video, if you simply say the thing you need assistance with, the likelihood is that your community can fulfill the need. Don't be nervous or scared to just put it out there, something which seems difficult for you just may be your neighbors specialty. Back around the era when this came out in the late '80's/early '90's it felt like there was a new heroic teacher drama (Dead Poet's Society, Lean On Me) being released every six months. This particular inspirational drama was directed by Ramon Menendez and might be one of the best of that group. It's based upon the true story of Jaime Escalante and his advanced math class at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. Escalante was a math whiz and he taught his students not only how to be math whizzes but eventually AP Calculus. And we follow all of their stories towards clearing this difficult academic hurdle. Edward James Olmos stars as Professor Escalante alongside Lou Diamond Phillips, Rosanna DeSoto, Andy Garcia, and several other talented young actors. As Frank alluded to earlier in the show, we finally found the audio of the time Bill Withers surprised the USC football team under Pete Carroll.
Bill Withers is beloved for writing classics like Lean On Me, but Greg Kot has long contended that Withers' best album is Live at Carnegie Hall. This week hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot honor Withers' life by doing a classic album dissection on that record and review the latest album from Anohni and the Johnsons. Time to head back to the end of the 1980's with Morgan Freeman in the lead for the drama or possible melodrama known as Lean On Me (1989). Govier chose it after watching it after school on HBO many times back in the 90's. We also have an additional guest in Christian Herominski as sits together with Travis in his kitchen while sharing a mic. Of course we have our abbreviated quarantine viewing picks as well! NOTE: we no longer live stream the show every Thursday on Twitch, YouTube and Facebook Live. We will still post videos to our YouTube, but we are switching to recording the show offline and then posting it. Follow our daily film musings on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. TONY AWARD®, United States Congressional Record & National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, Hollywood Walk of Fame Inductee 2023!!The Music Historian in ME Loves to Talk to the Legends in Many Niche Careers & Ms. Melba Moore has a unique career in Entertainment!Finding out she's getting a star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023 hasn't stopped Tony Award winner and trailblazing singer, actress, television host and Newark Arts High School graduate Melba Moore from continuing her more than five-decade entertainment career.Marvelous Melba is truly a triple threat in the entertainment industry -- winning top honors in music, theatre and television: American prolific 5 Octave singer and Tony award winning actress.Broadway, Contemporary Soul/R&B, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Gospel and Classical.Melba has NEW Music Compilation called "Imagine'. Already Topping the American & British Soul charts. The title track already being named Soultracks' Song of the Year.Melba Moore has done it all, twice. At the tender age of 10, Melba notes that it was then that she was introduced to music and that “I didn't have any music in my life before my mother married my stepfather. He introduced music into our home and into my life.” From that moment forward, Melba began to develop her 5-octave, note-holding soprano that would soon bring audiences to their feet. Theater: Won a Tony Award for best featured actress in a musical for her role in the musical "Purlie," Replaced Diane Keaton in the Broadway musical "Hair" Was first African American woman to play the female lead in the musical "Les Misérables" on Broadway. The Newark, NJ Arts High School graduate started doing recording sessions after a chance meeting with singer/songwriter/composer Valerie Simpson (of Ashford & Simpson). That opportunity in the studio led Melba in the company of the Broadway musical “HAIR!” First in the ensemble of the show, Melba's name was tossed into the conversation when actress Diane Keaton left the show and Melba took the female lead and broke all the rules, being the first Black woman to replace a white actress in a featured role on Broadway. The journey of Melba's career took her meteorically from there to the lead of “PURLIE,” a musical adaptation of a play written by acting husband and wife pioneers Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. That role and its musical soundtrack would earn Moore a Grammy nomination as Best New Artist in 1971 and a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress. The power of her presence on Broadway got Melba noticed and she became a virtual sensation. TelevisionStarred in her own sitcom, "Melba." Melba Moore became so well known that network television offered her a summer variety series. Starring Melba and actor/singer Clifton Davis, who was starring on Broadway in another show, the duo, who were dating, were given the choice to bring their mass appeal into Middle America. Music Celebrated top hits during the70s, 80s and 90s-- "Falling," "You Stepped Into My Life," "Love's Comin' At Ya," and "A Little Bit More" — and others Performed a special rendition of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' Merged her inspirational and gospel style in many songs. Soon after the success of the ‘The Melba Moore/Clifton Davis Show,” it was time for her soaring soprano to take her foray into the recording studio. First signed to Buddah Records, Melba had hits like “This Is It,” “Lean On Me” and “You Stepped Into My Life,” garnering Grammy nominations and international success. Later signed to Capitol Records, she followed that success with “Love's Comin At Ya” and then a string of R&B hits followed, including "Read My Lips"—which later won Moore a third Grammy nomination (for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance), making her just the third black artist after Donna Summer and Michael Jackson to be nominated in the rock category. Hits like the #1 "A Little Bit More" with Freddie Jackson and "Falling," a hypnotic ballad that features one of the longest held notes in recorded history. Moore would also record “Lift Every Voice And Sing” (the Negro National Anthem) at the behest of Dr. Dorothy Height, the president of the National Council of Negro Women, who wanted Moore to use her formidable talent to ensure that the song would reach a new generation.Melba Moore's produced version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing" which was entered into the United States Congressional Record as the official Negro National Anthem in 1990, was just named an ‘American Aural Treasure,' by the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for Ms. Moore's co-produced recorded rendition of the anthem© 2023 Building Abundant Success!!2023 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

VOICES FROM THE FRONTLINES Your National Movement Building Show “Wake up and smell the revolution” Tuesday March 28, 2023 | 8 AM PST On todays show Voices from the Frontlines present MOTHERLAND BY: Vic Gerami An Armenian-American Journalist, Documentarian, LGBT activist, Columnist, Publisher, and Organizer Eric Mann and discuses with Vic Gerami the Powerful documentary "MotherLand". A documentary produced by Vic which informs on the historic genocide of the Armenian people throughout history by various imperialistic nations and their allies. "The Armenian genocide[a] was the systematic destruction of the Armenian people and identity in the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Spearheaded by the ruling Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), it was implemented primarily through the mass murder of around one million Armenians during death marches to the Syrian Desert and the forced Islamization of Armenian women and children." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_genocide) -Eric's sings "Lean On Me” by: Bill Withers. In brief Eric discuss the Strategy and Soul theater's film screening of "The Bus riders Union" film produce by Haskell Wexler . The screening will take place March 30, 2023 at Strategy and Soul theater. The Bus Riders Union film is a documentary about an activist group called the Bus Riders Union. Their focus is on improving the public transportation system in Los Angeles. The bus system there is in a sorry state. Busses are overcrowded. A rider will routinely see three busses pass her by, completely full, before being able to board. Handicapped riders find that the lift system on most busses is broken. Many riders need to take three or more busses to arrive at their destinations, and late night service on some routes is discontinued without any notice. On top of this, the MTA was planning a massive fare increase and focusing their energy on subways and trains that are costly and benefit mainly upper class white people. The B.R.U. views this struggle over Los Angeles busses as the new civil rights battle. The bus system is utilized almost exclusively by minorities and low income residents. Since the busses are so unreliable, workers are not able to predictably arrive on time and therefore have trouble holding jobs. This means that an already disadvantaged segment of the population is being further held back. Kikanza Ramsey, B.R.U. organizer, describes her organization as "an experiment to see if we can create a multi-racial, bi-lingual, gender-balanced mass movement of working class people." The tape follows the legal struggles of the group throughout the 90's as they battle with the city and the MTA for service improvements. ("Https://Mediaburn.Org/Video/Bus-riders-union/") In the last half of the show Eric holds a conversation with Channing Martinez, Lead Organizer at the Strategy and Soul Center, and the Bus Riders Union. Channing reports from the ground and the frontlines of the battle field. Channing will discuss the Bus Riders Union Film at the Strategy and Soul theater.

GRAMMY® winner Club Nouveau, Timex Social ClubGrammy Award winning singer and record label executive, Jay King, was elected CEO/President of the California Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) in June of 2019.GRAMMY® Award winning Jay King/Club Nouveau's music was featured in the #1 Hit Movie "US" by Director Jordan Peele! Blues'—adding to the musical backdrop of King's childhood.Jay King broadened his own talent when he took up the trumpet in his freshman year of high school and when Popping and Breaking became popular; dance soon opened doors to his subsequent career in music. As his music and connections continued to develop, he found himself writing songs for Con Funk Shun whose members, Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate, encouraged King against the detractors who at the time didn't like his sound. Paul and Erika walked into 1989's Lean On Me with high expectations. After all, it's got Morgan Freeman and Robert Guillaume! What more could any movie need?? Well, listeners…it turns out it maybe needed a little more. Or maybe a little less? It surely needed something.
This week, to help celebrate the end of Black History Month, we bring you an in-depth conversation with Compton-raised blues and roots master Keb' Mo', who has helped preserve the haunting Delta blues of Robert Johnson while also making his own cheerful and slyly subversive R&B Americana for the last thirty years - winning four Grammys along the way. His newest album, Good To Be, was inspired by returning to his neighborhood in LA and rediscovering the community.Born Kevin Roosevelt Moore to parents who migrated from the Deep South, Keb' Mo' shortened his name and began playing in a variety of styles from calypso (he played steel drums) to pop before finding an audience playing guitar in local theater productions, and attracting the attention of Martin Scorsese who featured him in his Blues compilation. His 1994 self-titled debut was a critical and commercial success. Keb' cuts a dashing figure onstage and has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, appearing in The West Wing, stealing scenes as Howlin' Wolf on CMT's Sun Records, and playing the haunting bluesman Possum in John Sayles' 2007 film Honeydripper. The Obamas brought him to the White House to play, too. As he mentioned in the podcast, it was being in the presence of Michelle that was his favorite memory of that special trip.Keb' Mo' has especially cherished collaborating with some of his musical heroes like Taj Mahal, Rosanne Cash and recently on his upbeat 2022 LP with Darius Rucker on “Good Strong Woman.” Stick around to the end to hear him talk about hanging out with Bill Withers and remaking the classic “Lean On Me.” Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-show-on-the-road-with-z-lupetin1106/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
