With seven Grammy Awards under his belt, Forrest Robinson has built quite the musical career for himself. He's toured as a drummer with bands India.Arie, Victor Wooten, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, TLC, Ray Parker Jr., The Crusaders, Fifth Dimension, and Arrested Development to name a few. He has also performed live on “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Good Morning America,” and many more. Forrest is also the drummer in Phil Collen's (Def Leppard lead guitarist) blues-rock-n-soul band Delta Deep. On the night of January 8th, 2025, during the devastating California fires that ravaged tens of thousands of acres, including the entire city of Altadena, Forrest's home he shared with his wife Paige, was razed to the ground. This included his music studio, revered drum set ‘Gretchen,' all his musical instruments, and vital computer equipment. Forrest and Paige evacuated their home the evening before, as directed, wearing only the clothes on their backs carrying their small pup. 'The Shoutout Music Appreciation 101', a weekly radio program on the Stationhead music platform and it's dedicated listening family, the TSO Audio Crew, have unified with the creation of this GoFundme to get the attention of many to help us assist Forrest who has been a dear friend, thoughtful person and masterful musical talent. We love you Forrest. https://gofund.me/6df08dc7https://gofund.me/6df08dc7
It is a privilege to welcome legendary composer, producer, and saxophonist Boney James to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Boney's musical journey began when he picked up the clarinet at eight and switched to the saxophone at 10. His family moved from New Rochelle, New York, to Los Angeles when he was 14. In the City of Angels, Boney James joined his first band and attended the University of California at Los Angeles. After he graduated with a history degree, he turned his attention to music full-time and learned to play keyboards. In 1985, he joined Morris Day's band and spent seven years as a sideman and touring musician for Bobby Caldwell, the Isley Brothers, Randy Crawford, and Teena Marie. In 1992, Boney released his debut album, Trust, and has released 15 solo studio albums and a collaborative record, Shake It Up, with Rick Braun in 2000. Boney James also recorded many legendary recording artists such as Al Jarreau, Angie Stone, Anthony Hamilton, Faith Evans, George Benson, and Kenny Lattimore. In 2014, Boney produced two songs on Al Jarreau's tribute record to George Duke, My Old Friend: “Bring Me Joy” (with George Duke) and “No Rhyme, No Reason” (with Kelly Price). The following year, he first appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Earlier this year, Boney James made history as he became the first recording artist to hit 20 number one singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart. In addition to his Billboard milestone, he is a four-time Grammy Award nominee and a Soul Train Award winner. Boney also received three NAACP Image Award nominations for Best Jazz Album. On October 18, Boney will release his nineteenth studio album, Slow Burn. The record's first single, “All I Want is You,” is a collaboration with rising R&B star October London. The song was Boney's fastest-reaching single on Adult Urban Radio, reaching the Top 30 in three weeks and crossing the 1 million streams milestone within two weeks on Pandora. On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Boney James discussed the lessons he learned from Bobby Caldwell, Morris Day, and Teena Marie, Slow Burn's recording process, and “All I Want is You's” viral success.Let's connect on social media! They want to know that they belong to a team, that they're part of a team. And this, I think, is the most critical piece: They want to know that people care about them and that they're doing a good job.” (Joe Miller)“You have to have milestones, or what we call benchmarks, along the way. Milestones are places in between the final goal achievement that you can measure your result and see whether you're on target.” (Joe Pici)“People have different personality types. People think differently and get a greater response if you surround yourself with people who think differently than you and you are able to work together.” (David Nemes)“Good people want to contribute, and they will contribute. And they'll work really hard, but they have to have a chance to recharge. I think you have to have a respect for how their energy ebbs and flows.” (Max Friar)“It's really just getting back to being human beings who have conversations and we rid ourselves of any assumptions, and we get down to really having those conversations around value.” (Joshua Washington)“Covid was a crash course on how to handle communication well with your team and really over-communicate – even when we didn't have all the answers and people wanted answers.” (Kelly Plawinski)“If I know my stuff so well that I'm not thinking about it, then all my focus can be on that person's communication style. Blend the playing styles of Freddie King, Allan Holdsworth, and Duane Allman, and — as you'll hear on this episode — you'd probably get something sounds like the great ALLEN HINDS. When it comes to improvising epic solos, grooving behind world-class singers (he's worked with everyone from Bobby Caldwell and Randy Crawford to Gino Vannelli, Roberta Flack, and Natalie Cole), building “mutt guitars” out of vintage parts, dialing in pedalboards, and maintaining guitars, Allen is such a deep player that No Guitar Is Safe felt a return visit to his guitar lair in the Hollywood Hills was fully merited. Plus, we introduce Allen to an intriguing new delay pedal from Keeley and Andy Timmons called the Halo. (Does Allen fall in love with it after just a few notes? Does he steal it from us and refuse to give it back? Listen and find out.) And, last but not least, Allen explains why, if you haven't already, you need to start recording and releasing your own music NOW. Hosted as always by Jude Gold. Presented by Guitar Player magazine and GuitarPlayer.com Thanks to G7th Capos for the laser-engraved “No Guitar Is Safe” capo we give each guest on the show.

Welcome to episode 81 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be talking about Hiro Tsunoda's 1991 album, “Ballad X'mas.” This was a fun episode to work on. I love Tsunoda's voice, and the non-Christmas songs on his album gave me something a little different to talk about. It also let me discover Zapp's version of “Ooo Baby Baby.” As a native Daytonian, I was surprised to learn a few months ago that Zapp was pretty big in Japan. I was lucky enough to cross paths with Roger Troutman once back in my teens. We were driving past when he was walking out of Troutman Studios. I hollered, “Roger, I want to be your man!” (The song was huge at the time.) He laughed and waved. The fact that he reacted at all was a big thrill for me. As I mentioned in the episode, I would have loved some Christmas music from a 1970s-era Hiro Tsunoda. “Ballad X'mas” is great, but I think an album from 15-20 years earlier would have turned into a Christmas funk classic. Also, as promised, here are a few videos, including Zapp's “Ooo Baby Baby” and Randy Crawford's “Almaz.” Hiro Tsunoda and the Space Band – Mary Jane (1972) Hiro Tsunoda – I Love You (B-side to “Mary Jane”) Hiro Tsunoda and the Space Band from the 1974 One Step Festival Randy Crawford – Almaz Zapp – Ooo Baby Baby (1989) I hope you enjoyed learning about and listening to Hiro Tsunoda. He has a lot of other great music, so you might find yourself going down a rabbit hole on YouTube after checking out the videos. Thanks again to Rocket Brown for introducing me to him. If you get a chance, check out Come Along Radio, where Rocket plays and talks about some of the best music City Pop has to offer. Despite my best efforts, I wasn't quite back on track with my release dates. This was supposed to be my May 11th episode, but instead was pushed back to the 25th. I'm shooting for a Memorial Day release for my next episode, where I talk about Keiichiro Ebihara and the Lobsters' “Blue Christmas – Trumpet Mood Collection” from 1959. It's a fantastic album and a smooth way to start your summer. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!
WutUpDoe? Back in the day when I dj'd at a club in a strip mall on the Eastside named The Lobby, on Saturday afternoons, we'd have jazz by an artist named Bobby Floyd and his Trio. My responsibility once I arrived around 6 pm was to keep the audience from leaving until around 9:30 pm or so until the regular crowd would come through to party with us, thus this lil mix. Shout out to my folk in Flint, Detroit, and Grand Rapids, Michigan who loved to hand dance to music like this!I like taking chances, so I always wanted to mix Mac Miller with T.S. Monk to hear in my ride, but I hope you all enjoy what you hear. If you know of a venue you'd like to hear me play live in Bi-Weekly or whatever, feel free to share and I hope this sounds good on all your favorite devices. I can't wait to get in the car with this one. Peace. The Artists in order:Lorenzo Owens, Michael Jackson, Kook & The Gang, The Crusaders ft Randy Crawford, Koffee Brown, Stevie Wonder, Anderson.Paak ft. Brandy, Mac Miller ft. Anderson .Paak; T.S. Monk, William DeVaughn, The Spinners, Alicia Myers, The S.O.S. Band, KC & The Sunshine Band, and Teena Marie!

I Love Rock 'n Roll is the first album by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and the second solo album by Joan Jett. Born as Joan Marie Larkin, Joan Jett got her start in the music industry as a teenager when her family moved to the Los Angeles area and divorced shortly thereafter. She was a founding member of the all-girl band The Runaways at the age of 16.Jett began her solo career in England in 1979, where she recorded songs with some of the members of the Sex Pistols. Later that year she returned to Los Angeles where she connected with a songwriter and producer named Kenny Laguna. Laguna would relocate Jett to Long Beach, New York, and assist her with both her first solo album and the formation of the Blackhearts. The group spent a year touring and building up a following in the New York Area before releasing I Love Rock 'n Roll. This album would be a mixture of original songs and covers, and the title track would spend 7 weeks at the top of the U.S. charts. The album was a commercial success, selling 10 million copies, and is Jett's most successful album to date. (I'm Gonna) Run AwayRob starts us off with the second track on the album, a deeper cut, and an original song written by Jett and Laguna. It has a punk feel, as does much of the album, and the lyrics reflect a break-up.Crimson and CloverThis cover of a song originally performed by Tommy James and the Shondells alternates between a slow and fast tempo, but maintains a hard rock edge throughout, unlike the more psychedelic aspects of the original. Jett was questioned about her choice not to change the pronouns in the lyrics from female to male, and she commented simply that the change in lyrics would make the song not rhyme.Summertime Blues Eddie Cochran co wrote and performed this song in 1958. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts speed this one up and give it a punk edge. It was not originally on the album, but appeared as the B-side to a single from Jett's prior solo album “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah).” It would appear on the album as a bonus track when released on CD. I Love Rock 'n RollThis title track is the big hit, and is also a cover originally performed by The Arrows in 1975. Jett first heard the song while touring with The Runaways, and she recorded an early version of the song with members of the Sex Pistols in 1979. It was the number 3 song on the U.S. charts for the year of 1982. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Street Life by Randy Crawford (from the motion picture “Sharkey's Machine”)This action film featured a stunt involving a plunge out of the Peachtree Plaza hotel, the tallest building in Atlanta at the time. STAFF PICKS:Jealous Lover by Rainbow Bruce starts off the staff picks with the lead-off track from a 4-song EP of the same name. Frontman Joe Lynn Turner and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore wrote this song. Turner wrote the lyrics in about 5 minutes, inspired by an argument he had with Blackmore, which made him think about a fight he'd recently had with his girlfriend. “And it's hard to discover you're like any other jealous lover.”Young Turks by Rod Stewart Brian features the first US single from Stewart's eleventh album, Tonight I'm Yours. The song tells the story of two young lovers who run away from their parents to make their own way. Interestingly the phrase “young turks” never appears in the lyrics. The video included an early example of break dancing.Marie Marie by The BlastersWayne brings us a rockabilly song, or as The Blasters would describe it, “R&B in cowboy boots.” The song tells the story of a guy who is told to leave a family's daughter alone, and so he sings to her as he is leaving. I Love You by Climax Blues BandRob's staff pick is a soft rock hit. It tells the story of a guy who is rescued by the love of his wife. It is the second biggest hit by the Climax Blues Band after Couldn't Get It Right. It hit number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:September Fifteenth by Pat Metheny & Lyle MaysThis jazz instrumental was a feature of "Jazz Flavors" on radio station 94Q in Atlanta in December of 1981.

My guest today is Allen Hinds, a player that most certainly possesses what I like to call the “Three T's of guitar playing”- Touch, Tone, and Taste. Allen is originally from Alabama but has lived in Southern California most of his life and found a home at the world famous Musicians Institute in Hollywood (where we first met when I was a student there in the early 90's). Along the way he has also built a successful career as a sideman (Gino Vanelli, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Randy Crawford, Hiroshima, etc..) and solo artist with 5 solo records to his name - Fly South, Monkeys and Slides, Falling Up, Beyond it All, and Fact of the Matter. His new yet to be released record entitled “The Good Fight” should be available very soon. In this interview, which took place at Allen's house in Laurel Canyon, we discuss his teaching career, legato technique, Gino Vanelli stories, playing over chord changes, how slide guitar playing has been a big part of his sound, and much more.
