"You know, the camera is not meant just to show misery." "The subject matter is so much more important than the photographer." -- Gordon Parks In this episode of Street Shots, Antonio and Ward dive into the life and legacy of the iconic photographer Gordon Parks. They explore his remarkable journey from humble beginnings in Fort Scott, Kansas, to becoming one of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th century. They focus especially on his influential “Segregation Story” photo series, which captures powerful images of racial injustice in mid-20th century America, emphasizing Parks' talent for storytelling through visual imagery. Antonio and Ward also discuss Parks' renowned photograph “American Gothic,” featuring Ella Watson, and how this iconic image vividly illustrated the racial and economic challenges of its time. They touch upon Parks' successful venture into filmmaking, notably directing the groundbreaking movie “Shaft,” highlighting his unique ability to bridge photography and film to address important social issues. Ward shares personal reflections inspired by the “Collected Works of Gordon Parks,” underscoring Parks' lasting influence on visual culture and storytelling.   Subscribe to our Substack Newsletter Help out the show by buying us a coffee! "The artist's world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep." "I think of myself as an explorer who has spent his life on a long voyage of discovery." -- Paul Strand In this episode of Street Shots, Antonio chats with guest co-host Keith Goldstein about the changing world of stock photography and Keith's book projects. Keith, who's worked with both Getty Images and Shutterstock, shares his thoughts on their recent merger and how AI is reshaping the stock industry. They talk about the challenges photographers face now, with free image sites and AI-generated content threatening what was once a solid income source for many. The conversation shifts to Keith's creative work, including his book Manhatta, inspired by the 1921 film of the same name. Keith reflects on the process of capturing stunning cityscapes from the Empire State Building and the ups and downs of publishing the book. He also teases upcoming projects, including photo books on the boroughs of New York and Broadway. The episode is a mix of industry insights and personal stories, with a good dose of reflection on how photography continues to evolve.   Subscribe to our Substack Newsletter Help out the show by buying us a coffee! Antonio and Ward kick off this episode of Street Shots by chatting about some recent photography finds. Ward got his hands on a Godox Lux Junior flash, a small, retro-style unit that's easy to use and sparks creative fun. Antonio talks about his latest book pick, Segregation Story by Gordon Parks, praising the powerful color photos that vividly depict segregation in America. Ward also discovered East Beats, Osaka 1964-1970 by Yoshihiro Suzuki, a street photography collection capturing everyday life in Osaka with a quiet, observant touch. Both books spark thoughtful discussions on how photographers interpret the world through their lenses.   This naturally leads to a deeper conversation about the unique role of photographers—being both distant observers and fully engaged participants. They explore how taking pictures can be a way of connecting while staying somewhat detached, a tricky balance that often leads to compelling images. They also touch on seasonal isolation and how solitude can sharpen creative focus, inspiring more intentional work. It's a reflective episode about seeing, connecting, and creating while walking that fine line between observer and participant.   Subscribe to our Substack Newsletter Help out the show by buying us a coffee! "If you look carefully at life, you see blur. Shake your hand. Blur is part of life." -- William Klein "Do not mistake sharpness for truth." -- Peter Henry Emerson   In this episode, Antonio and Ward embark on an enlightening discussion about starting a photography collective. Drawing from their experience in building their own photography group, they provide invaluable tips and advice on the importance of having a common gathering place, patience, and evolving organically. Antonio pays tribute to recently departed friend and fellow photographer, Mel DiGiacomo, whose approach to capturing the essence of life has deeply impacted his own work. Through personal reflections, Antonio shares how Mel's distinct and authentic style, characterized by its raw and candid nature, challenged and reshaped his perspective on photography. This tribute to Mel is both intimate and enlightening, offering listeners a glimpse into the lasting legacy of a photographer who truly understood the power of the medium to tell compelling stories. The conversation shifts to explore the artistic use of intentional blur in photography. Antonio and Ward discuss how embracing blur can add a layer of emotion and movement to images, encouraging photographers to experiment with focus to convey the fleeting nature of moments and memories. This part of the discussion is not just about technical advice; it's a philosophical exploration of how imperfection and abstraction can enhance the narrative quality of a photograph. By inviting listeners to reconsider the conventional pursuit of sharpness, the Street Shots guys champion a more introspective and expressive approach to photography, underscoring the medium's capacity to capture the intangible and evoke deep, personal connections. On this episode, Antonio reminisced about his recent photo showcase, set against a brick backdrop that brought his images to life. Mark Reierson's touch made the difference in the arrangement. The chat soon hinted at future engagements, notably an artist talk and an exciting zine collaboration.  Ward and Antonio's joint Street Shots zine, "Line of Sight," celebrates a collaboration of street photography. Crafted meticulously using the Miro app, the upcoming zine doesn't just chronicle their passion but will also support their podcast. Both are excited about upcoming projects: Antonio's nostalgic "11218+" venture and Ward's "Communities" project capturing Calgary's essence. They both revel in the idea of converting their digital captures into tactile memories. Finally, a recent outing saw Antonio lead a Scott Kelby's worldwide photo walk, favoring his iPhone 15 and dabbling with a new LIDAR-equipped Polaroid. Later, Antonio and Ward exchanged notes on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Impressed by its features, especially the "tetra prism", they also agree on one thing: Snapseed's app excellence, even if the desktop version leaves them chuckling about its quirks.   Podcast Show Links   Subscribe to our Substack Newsletter Help out the show by buying us a coffee! Antonio and Ward dive into the vibrant pages of James and Karla Murray's new book "Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City's Independent Shops, Past and Present" on this episode of Street Shots. The Murrays recount their serendipitous journey, starting from documenting the graffiti art scene in the late '90s to capturing the rapid transformations of NYC's iconic mom-and-pop stores. The book, a testament to the city's cultural evolution, captures the spirit of neighborhoods spread across the five boroughs. The duo discusses the challenges of capturing these ever-evolving spaces and the poignant stories of the store owners. The conversation takes a deeper turn as James and Karla reflect on the emotional ties New Yorkers have with these corner stores, especially the immigrants who found both livelihood and community in them. With many of these shops now only memories, the Murrays hope their work sparks a renewed appreciation for these unique, irreplaceable facets of New York's identity. Their photographs stand as both a celebration and a call to preserve the city's soul. The book "Store Front" will be available on September 19th and can be preordered now at Amazon. ----more---- JAMES and KARLA MURRAY - Website, YouTube, Instagram, "Store Front" from Prestel (images courtesy James & Karla Murray) Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City's Independent Shops, Past and Present   (Richard's Barber Shop, Nostrand Avenue near Park Place, Crown Heights, 2004. ©James and Karla Murray)   (Katy's Candy Store, Tompkins Avenue near Vernon Avenue, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 2004. ©James and Karla Murray)   (CBGB, Bowery at Bleecker Street, East Village, 2005. ©James and Karla Murray)   (D. Antonio and Ward are back with a new episode of Street Shots, where they dive into a few interesting topics. They start by sharing their thoughts on an amazing book that a listener sent them, and then Antonio opens up about a common question he often gets asked: what gear he uses to capture his shots. Fortunately, Ward has some great advice to help him handle this dilemma with ease. Last episode, Antonio and Ward asked why we would want to take black and white images. Well, of course, this episode they now ask the same question of color. Walker Evans once called color photography "vulgar" but he ended his photographic life embracing the color images he shot with his Polaroid instant camera. Antonio and Ward discuss the idea that maybe we take color photography for granted. The first image you take with a new camera or new phone is, of course, a color image. The Street Shots guys want you to really think about what it means to create a color image and be mindful of color in your photography. No, they don't think color photography is vulgar and frankly neither did Evans. Show Links: Antonio M. (image courtesy of shane balkowitsch) Antonio and Ward speak with North Dakotan photographer/ambrotypist Shane Balkowitsch. In 2012, Shane started his photographic journey using the almost forgotten technique known as the "Wet Plate Collodion" process. This 1851 process which applies pure silver onto glass or tin, wet plate collodion photography is an arduous technique requiring patience and skill resulting in a unique, one-of-a-kind archival image. Because exposures often exceed ten seconds, Shane describes the images he captures as "moving stills." The Street Shots guys talk to Shane not so much about the "how" of the wet plate process but more of the "why" of wet plates. They also dive into his many projects and his cultivation of a creative community surrounding his purpose-built daylight studio on the plains of North Dakota. This is surely a conversation for the ages. In Ancient Greek, the word Ambrotype is translated as "Immortal Impression." Last week we talked about the amazing power in the tool of “What If” and how it impacts your creativity. To continue that idea let’s talk about how important it is to introduce an element of “Play” into your creative process. ----more---- Why “Play”? When we approach our creative pursuits without an element of play, we are more typically focused on a specific end result. There may be client work pressures or just the pressure and consequences we place on ourselves for a less than ideal outcome. There’s absolutely a time and place to get down to business. But when we play, it’s only then that we are truly able to explore the hidden recesses in our creative minds and discover new paths and direction with our creativity. “The research shows that play-like activities put us into into a psychological state where it’s ok to fail, where it’s ok to wonder “what if?” A result of that thinking is the ability to freely explore the unknown. From that exploration creative insights are much easier to spot.” - Tanner Christensen, Writer at CreativeSomething.Net Episode Resources Shuttertime Episode with Antonio Rosario from Street Shots as a guest host. Antonio heard my episode last week and because of that and an idea from a mutual friend, Mark Rierson, decided to allow for a little “What If” style play with a photography genre he’d always wanted to try. The results, much like the episode of Shuttertime, were fantastic.   Why is Play Essential For Creativity This article from creativesomething.net contains some excellent insight on how Play and What If go hand in hand to allow us to freely create without any fear of consequence.   Hot Kenobi Instagram Account This is an example where playing with toys and a camera led to a new passion.   Jason Yang @WorkMoreOrLess on IG Another fantastic example of playful experiments turning out some truly fun and inspiring work.   Enjoy what I do? We chat about all the different paths we can take when we decided to make photography our expressive medium of choice. We also take some inspiration from this video of photographer Jay Maisel talking about how to be a better photographer.   Before you listen to this episode, please go here and listen to part one on Shuttertime with Sid and Mac. Street Shots Photography Podcast

Well, the time has come to say adios to Tom as a regular host on Street Shots. In this episode, Antonio and Tom talk about what it's been like to have created such a fun team with Switch to Manual and this podcast. Not a whole lot of practical photography tips spoken about but more about what it's been like for the two of them to have worked together to create STM and what the future will be like with just Antonio hosting the podcast. So grab your favorite beverage and chill with the STM guys on this bittersweet episode. Oh, and it's not all bad news. :)

It's Street Shots fiftieth episode and Tom is back! It's been a busy time for STM guy Tom, what with, oh, getting MARRIED and such! So on this special episode, Antonio and Tom do some appropriate catching up and do talk about photography: Antonio's street photography class, the resurgence of film photography and, given the current state of the world, how to safely photography rallies and protests. So, enjoy this milestone moment from the Switch to Manual Guys!

Antonio decides to share his street photography "rules of thumb" on this episode of Street Shots.  While not hard and fast rules, per se, these guidelines were compiled from Antonio's extensive experience of finding great photos on the street. From "knowing your gear" to learning that "perfect is the enemy of good," he goes through some of the principles that guide his street shooting on a daily basis.

Many mickles make a muckle. What the heck does that mean? Well, it's an archaic phrase meaning many small things add up to one big thing. In this episode of Street Shots, the Switch to Manual guys discuss all the small things photographer Steve McCurry has done lately to put himself in one big mess. Is he a photojournalist or a "visual storyteller?" Does it really matter, with all that's going on in the world, that McCurry has been "caught" altering his images using Photoshop? Who's it harming? Is he a phoney? Well, the STM guys raise some of these questions in the hope that we can all learn something about what it means to be a photographer in these days of chasing "likes" and the siren song of image manipulation software.  It's new for Antonio and Tom to discuss breaking news in the photo world, but they thought they throw their hats into the McCurry debate, not necessarily to judge or criticize (though there might be just a tad bit of that in the mix) but to discuss what it means to be true to yourself, and the rest of the world, about the images you create and the kind of photographer you want to be. Clue - it isn't the photographer. The first half of this conversation is about is working practises - how he manages to remain productive across so many media. The second half is all about his trial sensation, 'The Death of Conversation' which is a series of street shots that show people lost to the world around them as they gaze lovingly at their smart phones. Babycakes is questioning whether this relationship between human and phone is a good thing. The series stock a chord and, in 2014 and 15 he found himself a regular contributor to news items on the subject and it all culminated in a Ted Talk. While Tom is away at school, Antonio has the keys to the podcast again and he thought he might squeeze in one more episode before the end of the year going over his photography "recipe," letting loose on his Fuji/mobile/black and white photo workflow. Having spent most of his time on Allison Sheridan's Chit Chat Across the Pond podcast eluding the specific question of his black and white workflow, Antonio is making up for that by spilling the beans about how he goes from the camera to his final shot. Since this is mainly a workflow episode, it's devoted to his use of the Fuji X100T camera and Google's Snap Seed photo processing app on the iPad. Tune in if you want to learn some of his street shooting and processing secrets.  Also, this is the last Street Shots episode of 2015. The STM boys will be back in 2016 with a great lineup of guests and photography topics. Until then, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Is your photography starting to feel like the movie, Groundhog Day? Are you shooting the same subject over and over and over? If so, you're gonna love episode 33 of Street Shots which is all about “finding novelty in the familiar.” Most photographers know that feeling of seeing something familiar and thinking, ‘been there, done that.' And while sometimes letting an image go can create an opportunity to capture something else entirely, sometimes the challenge is finding novelty in the familiar. How might you discover a fresh perspective? This episode offers some hints through reference to Antonio's images of the Brooklyn Bridge and Tom's documentation of social protest. The STM guys are back together and they're just a little on the rusty side. Tom made it safely across the country to his new home base and Antonio fired up Skype and Street Shots is back in business. Now that they're separated by 2,000+ miles, they realize how important it is to maintain a sense of community between them despite the distance. In this episode the Switch to Manual guys talk about the value of larger photographic community, both as a source of inspiration and just plain fun. From the NYC Photo Expo to Brooklyn's Photoville and small meetups in between, communities of shutterbugs offer great opportunities to learn and share your work. Photography at its most basic is about capturing light. There are all kinds of light: natural, artificial, diffused, transmitted, reflected, ambient, and so on. In this episode of Street Shots, listen to Antonio and Tom discuss what kind of light turns them on and how they go about capturing it. It'll prove to be an illuminating show. And apologies for the bad puns.

This episode Tom is on leave and Antonio's got the keys and went nuts. No, not really. So a slight change in format this week as he discusses a new iPhone camera attachment that's hitting the market, the DxO One, and his opinion about this unique piece of hardware. He follows up on previous podcast episodes (one with Bart Busschots about photographing people and the last Street Shots episode about shooting in bad weather) with his experiences shooting the recent Coney Island Mermaid Parade in Brooklyn, NY. What it was like shooting with mirror-less Fuji cameras in less than ideal weather and practicing his advice about asking total strangers if they wouldn't mind being photographed. A half hour of Antonio talking to himself and not sounding (too) crazy.

On this 6th episode of "Street Shots." Tom and Antonio start a new regular segment called "What's in your bag." The stuff in your camera bag is there ultimately to help you create the images you want to capture.  This episode, the STM boys discuss what kind of lenses are in their bags and what they do with them. Photographers love gear and lenses are often the biggest investment photographers will make when purchasing new equipment.   If you're thinking of buying a lens before the end of the year, hopefully you can get some insight as to what you might get. Wide, telephoto, zoom, "Pancake" lenses; Antonio and Tom go over the merits and shortcomings of these different lens types.   And a special shoutout to Bart Busschots of the "Let's Talk Photography" podcast and Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast podcasts. Bart has had us as guests on his podcast for quite some time and being on his show inspired us to do this podcast.
